I’m kinda joking when I say this but people have broken up over stupid things like one person’s weird attachment to articles of clothing (or accessories) they have to wear everywhere. Seriously, i don’t care if he’s brad pitt. if he wore that hat all through dinner when i’m looking as good (for the first time in a long time) as Angie, he’d be seriously getting on my nerves.

I’m a perfectly healthy, functioning guy. But i gotta admit, i don’t think i’d last more than 20 seconds if i was having sex with her. I’d have to keep my eyes shut the entire time, because if i saw her face i’d blow my load so fast, so hard.

I’m so happy to see her again,she looks great. never the one to criticize her but the added pounds really make her look very very good and sexy. Brad also looks hot. His hat is fine leave him alone. What I like about Angie is that she controls when to look sexy and feminine. And when she does it, there is no one like her. She doesn’t do stupid things like parading around with nipples showing through her blouse like Miss Orange. That’s so low-class. There is no way ‘beautiful’ Brad could look feminine at all. The New York Post’s scandal-scarred gossip column committed editorial suicide yesterday when it admitted that Page Six honcho Richard Johnson took cash from a favored celebrity restaurant.

In a bizarre and unprecedented confession, the gossip page that regularly dishes dirt on celebrities turned its knives inward and eviscerated Johnson for taking $1,000 from Nello Balan, owner of the famed Madison Ave. eatery Nello’s.

“Richard Johnson made a grave mistake in accepting cash from Nello Balan,” Post editor Col Allan was quoted as saying on Page Six. “After he informed me of his error in judgment, he was reprimanded, and policies were adopted that render such ethical lapses completely unacceptable.”

Johnson took the money in 1997, four years before Allan took the helm.

The torrent of allegations came in a signed affadavit from a former full-time Page Six writer Ian Spiegelman, who charged that Post staffers routinely took cash, gifts, junkets and other “freebies” from sources in exchange for favorable stories.

In his biggest bombshell, Spiegelman claimed Allan, Rupert Murdoch ’s hand-picked Aussie editor, even “received sexual favors” from strippers at Manhattan topless bar Scores.

“He was … said to have received sexual favors from women provided by the club in a private room,” Spiegelman stated in the affidavit. “Scores received much favorable coverage in the New York Post.”

The latest embarassment for Page Six and the Post comes as it is being threatened with a lawsuit by former Page Six staffer Jared Paul Stern, who was axed last year after being accused of trying to shake down California billionaire Ron Burkle for $220,000.

Post spokesman Howard Rubenstein told The News that Allan has been to the Scores strip club.

“But he paid for everything, paid for admission,” he said. “He told me, ‘Whatever I did was appropriate. There was no sexual contact.’ ”

Asked why the Post decided to air their dirty laundry on Page Six, Rubenstein said the paper “thought many of the claims were scurrilous and untrue” and “decided let’s put it out on the table, let’s put it out warts and all.”

“If you wait it out and it comes out, any refutation would be one line somewhere,” Rubenstein said.

Spiegelman’s affidavit was derided as “lies & smears” by Page Six yesterday even as it cited what it called “a four-page list of embarrassing allegations.”

Interviewed at his Forest Hills, Queens apartment by the Daily News, Spiegelman said the Post is “making Richard the fall guy here” and that “it was common knowledge” that he’d taken money from Nello’s.

In a signed affidavit provided to Stern’s lawyer, Spiegelman claimed Allan was one of the worst offenders when it came to taking freebies. He alleged Allan ran a “favor banking” system whose aim was to save pennies for a paper that “operates at a loss of tens of millions of dollars per year.”

Allan regularly took free meals, gifts, tickets, liquor and “numerous other perks and freebies, often in exchange for favorable coverage in the pages of the New York Post,” the affidavit states.

Allan was also regularly “comped” by Scores where, the affidavit helpfully describes, “women dance naked for money.”

Spiegelman claimed in the affidavit there were other journalistic sins at a newspaper where trading gifts for favorable stories was “considered business as usual”:

Spiegelman was ordered to “kill” a Page Six story about a Chinese diplomat at a strip club because it might endanger Murdoch’s business dealings in China.

Spiegelman said he got “free food and booze at restaurants and clubs, including Scores” and went on to describe “a culture of freebies” at the Post.

“When I was there, there were no rules on what you could take or what you couldn’t take,” claimed Spiegelman, who toiled at the tab from 1999-2000 and the freelanced for them until 2004 when he was fired for E-mailing a homophobic message.

Contacted by The News, Stern called the Post’s move “a ham-handed attack.”

“They ended up shooting themselves in the foot,” said Stern, who is suing Burkle and The News, among others.

The Post’s admissions come as Murdoch is trying to take over Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, for $5 billion. He has promised to preserve the journalistic integrity of The Journal and said he would establish an editorial board to oversee the news pages.

Federal authorities had been considering prosecuting Stern
on extortion and other charges since The News exposed the Page Six scandal last year. But in January, the feds declined to prosecute.

It’s immediately apparently that Aniston is the one lying. She stammers out, lamely, “Uh ・well, it was pretty much the same ending. It・t was just told ・uh ・a little differently. It’s not important actually. The characters ended up in a different area of the city, that’s all.”

Hmmm. Sensing her discomfort, a few folks ask softball questions that she answers gamely. The last question touches on the types of roles she is attracted to. So I follow up with “Have you noticed that both your major films roles have something big in common? Both characters want a man that she can’t have.”

“I like to see real life,” she answers nonchalantly.

“Is that real life?” I ask, figuring that here’s an opportunity for genuine insight into this actress.

We’re looking at each other. I’m trying to look interested, not challenging. She begins to stammer again. “It’s boring to just sort of・f・ don’t know why I love that・anting something and not being able to have it・ don’t know why I picked・hy I picked・”

I’ve talked to her before. I know her background and history. I keep pushing. “Do you think the estranged relationship you’ve had with your father might have something to do with it?”

She flinches. “I don’t know why I love these ・these roles.” Aniston touches her hand to her face. “Maybe it is something I’m trying to work out in my own life.”

The rest of the table has gotten very quiet. I’m leaning forward in my chair, toward her. It’s like it’s just us talking. I find this woman very interesting and very easy to talk to and I’m surprised at what a good actress she’s become but I’m not really sure if she has what it takes to be a movie star and I want to know what she thinks about that and there’s no time like the present so here goes. “Look,” I say, “Do you think your popularity on TV might be working against you on the big screen? I’ve really thought your performances in both movies were good, but on TV you just seem so approachable. Even in the movies, you play down to earth people. Do you think that people just want movie stars that are glamorous and untouchable? Could that be working against you?”

Disaster. Aniston arches her back in the chair and casts me a wounded look. “Uhhhh・ don’t know if anything’s working against me yet,” she says. Then she adds, her voice breaking, “Are you working against me?”

I backpedal furiously, glancing at Tate Donovan, who looks at me with nothing short of hatred. “No! I don’t want to make it sound like a negative thing! But everybody’s looking for the person who’s going to open a film with a $25 million weekend・

Aniston cuts me off. “But that shouldn’t be the main concern! If it was, I’d be doing Scream 3! It isn’t always so important to have a big hit! I want to have a career that lasts for a while!”

“I agree,” I agree. “But when we talked last year, you stated how the ultimate goal is to get from TV to film. You want to be an independent force, a star on your own. But in order for you to do that, you need to open a film. Now, I’m not trying to cast any aspersions of doubt on your talent. But your image is that you appear very accessible. Movie stars do not make it by appearing accessible.” Then, still trying to throw Aniston a curveball, I instead inadvertently make it a beanball right at her pretty head. “I mean, are you concerned that you don’t have what it takes to be a movie star?”

It is now obvious that she and I connected emotionally during the course of this interview, because I have genuinely hurt her feelings. We’ve still got eye contact, and I am beyond dismayed to see that hers are welling up with tears ・genuine tears for chrissakes! — and her lower lip is trembling. “Are you・re you saying I don’t have what it takes?” she asks, her voice breaking.

“No! Please, no!” I sputter, hating myself and turning ass-kisser mode into overdrive. “I’m just saying that even though you’re such a beautiful woman, one of the things that makes you so appealing is that you seem so approachable. I mean, you’re a ‘Friend,’ we invite you into our home every week. Movie stars are different. What I’m asking is if you fear you’ll have to sacrifice what I feel is your greatest asset in order to take a chance on becoming a movie star.” Everyone at the table is looking at me with thinly veiled contempt. I don’t blame them. “Look, I’ve offended you and I’m sorry. Let’s move on to somebody else,” I finish. Literally.

Coolly, her eyes now far away, Aniston says, “No, you haven’t offended me. You definitely haven’t. I understand the question you’re trying to say now. But I don’t see where I need to become unapproachable. I hope not. I don’t want to.”

But she’s much less receptive now and it’s all my fault. I don’t ask another question for the rest of the session. No one seems to mind.

Brad Pitt certainly did his bit as a best supporting actor nominee at the Golden Globes this week.

He gave Angelina Jolie support, in the form of a helping hand - on several occasions, actually - at the awards event.

The pair were holding hands when they walked on to the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton, but then Brad’s hand kept slipping into - for want of a better expression - the default position.

The actor was nominated for his role in the powerful picture Babel, the movie that won the big prize for best film (drama). The exhilarating movie Dreamgirls won the best film (musical or comedy) award.

Later, when the show was over, Brad and Angelina chatted to Cate Blanchett, who played Brad’s wife in Babel. Once the Hilton’s ballroom had emptied, the couple walked slowly to the exit and Brad’s hands strayed into derriere mode again.

I would like to be able to say that I averted my gaze but, to be honest, I couldn’t.

It was strangely touching to observe that this much gossiped-about couple seemed so contented.

And at least Brad’s hands were warm when they walked out into the cold night air to make their way to Paramount Pictures’ after-party, a block away.

There’s an elephant in the room said the flyer at last night’s global poverty-themed Banksy exhibition; There’s a problem that we never talk about. HELLO! Of course we weren’t talking about the elephant/problem – Brad and Ange were in the house! Like most of the exhibition’s early-bird arrivals, I found the megacouple’s presence extremely distracting. I mean, god bless Banksy, but there isn’t all that much to hold the attention in a stenciled canvas when the world’s hottest couple are making out in front of a painting two spaces down. The paparazzi waited hungrily outside the front (I think Brad and Ange snuck in the back way, picking their way through piles of elephant **** like every other self-respecting A-lister), and this led to one awkward moment when a guest struck a deal with a photog and sneaked his hardcore camera inside. The regular guest (who I’d seen wandering around before and was not a pap, unless paps have suddenly taken to wearing skinny jeans and getting asymmetrical haircuts) was sweating with nerves and suddenly swooped in and started snapping away randomly at the back of the couple’s heads as they looked at a painting, a trillion flashes a second. Everyone pretended not to notice, except Brad, who awkwardly turned and faced the camera, tried to persuade Angelina to do the same by tugging on her coat, who declined, looked embarrassed, pushed her hair in front of her face a bit, then eventually surrendered and gave a half-assed smile towards Brad. It was very tacky of the photographer, who ran straight outside once he got the pic. James St. James, on the other hand, strode right up to Brad and Ange mid-make-out, pulled them apart (picture a string of saliva stretching from their abruptly parted lips), and introduced himself. Now THAT’S CLASS.

LOS ANGELES—WE continue our column (part one appeared last Friday) on Brad Pitt who granted his first interview with us since the media frenzy over his relationship with Angelina Jolie began.

As he settled into a chair in a meeting room at the Universal Hilton, Brad said, “It’s been a long time. It’s nice to see you all. I’ve got three kids (now).” He joked, “You guys do anything?”

Then he proceeded to give a remarkably candid interview, with not a single “no comment” reply. As we wrote in the previous column, the only time he hesitated was when he was lobbed the question, “What are you good at?” “I really don’t know how to answer that,” he answered. He was being modest, of course.

He’s getting very good at acting, as he shows in his latest outing, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Babel,” a magnificently realized film that manages to make all four interrelated stories in Morocco, Tunisia, Japan and Mexico equally riveting.

The famous ex of Jennifer Aniston is also getting very proficient in co-producing films that are being buzzed about as contenders in the coming awards season: “The Departed,” which has critics raving and beating each other for the most number of superlatives they can heap on Martin Scorsese’s finest film in many years; and “Running With Scissors,” the adaptation of Augusten Burroughs’ bestselling memoir with Annette Bening reportedly excellent as a would-be poet and mother.

At the press con, there was a touching earnestness and sincerity in Brad’s face as he answered a question about why he and “Angie” decided to have their baby, Shiloh Nouvel, born in Africa.

With your interest in architecture, do you explain to your kids how to build strong structures when you play Lego with them?
I try to steer them to that direction. I hope we get a little engineer in there somewhere. I heard this great story of a father whose son drew this crazy structure. The son said it was a tree house so the dad made a tree house that looks exactly like the drawing. I thought that was a really nice story. I hope to be able to do that, too, someday.

Angelina said that motherhood has not stopped her from taking causes that are even wilder—those that urge her to take more risks. Do you share that sort of wildness with her?
Yes, unconventional, I would say. Your own personal experience and growth don’t have to stop at being a parent. It can be enhanced in some way, and your experience becomes fuller.

How has your celebrity status affected your humanitarian causes?
Of course, it helps because there’s an automatic spotlight on us. In fact, it’s hard to get out of that spotlight. It occurred to me a couple of years ago and I said it then: Since I couldn’t get out of the spotlight and there were so many people who are in need, maybe if I can be a conduit and deflect from myself.
So it’s been a great help and it opened many doors. We have access to meeting a lot of great minds who can give us a very informed education on a subject. It’s important that if you take on something, you stick with it because Hollywood is known for being flighty. Hollywood has a reputation of being self-serving sometimes. So it better be something that you believe in enough to stick with it.

Certainly, there have been (unfortunate) stories in the past because of this perceived idea, which is truly not the case. But a couple of bad examples can color the whole thing. You can do more harm to the cause. You can actually cause people to turn away and do exactly the opposite of what you set out to do.

What irritates you the most in this world, outside your personal sphere?
That list is long (laughter). Our country was founded on freedom. Anything that becomes a hindrance to that freedom I find shocking and shortsighted. The thing that irritates me the most is not being able to just live my life and let others live their lives as they wish instead of being threatened in some ways. I’ll give you two to keep it short. Second is our shortsighted foreign policy. This film speaks about that in the sense of getting back to this idea that we’re all the same. I am not hugging a tree and holding up a white flag but I am for true understanding and the willingness to understand others’ positions.

Can you talk about the media circus at the height of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”?
If there was a real conversation about what was going on, instead of this push to sensationalize and make money off that, I would have made myself available. But at that point, it was a no-win situation. I knew there would be a time when things would calm down and I could speak more freely and it wouldn’t be abused.

That (the media circus) was not about real journalism. To me, journalism is an unbiased telling of the facts. It’s not about speculation and sensationalism. I rail against the invention of “news.” It says something about our culture.

How has the last two years been for you?
Since I became a father and turned 40, the direction that I’d personally like to take has become clearer. Before, in my younger days, I was more of a drifter. I’d try many things on. I’d try anything. Now there’s real pride in understanding myself, what’s important to me, my own values and acting on those values.

This film probably parallels your passion for cross-culturalism, especially with the international breadth of the cast.
What’s extraordinary is the level of acting. We have people here who will headline a movie and we have adults and kids here who have never acted before in their lives, yet you cannot distinguish the difference. It’s extraordinary on Alejandro’s part to cast these people without any acting experience and to get that depth. The Moroccan kids and the one who played their father were extraordinary. In the scene where Cate’s (Blanchett) getting sewn up, that was actually the local veterinarian (laughter) doing it. He brought this realism. Yet the performances are all equal and there’s no story that stands out above any other.

Can you comment on how adoption from different cultures can help heal the world?
A few years ago, I said this and got into trouble. I just wish everyone would screw everyone so then we’d only have one color. Or we’d have so many colors that we couldn’t keep track and then it really wouldn’t matter (laughter). But that’s an obnoxious way of saying it. On the adoption front, we’re talking about the difference between a kid having a future and death. That was probably the case with our daughter (Zahara) and probably the same case with Maddox as well. That supersedes any other argument. I would like to see more of it instead of this idea of separatism which I rail against.

Africa has a special significance for you now. What are your impressions when you first landed in that continent?
It’s so vast and so different. There are places that are extraordinarily, beautifully haunting. The first thing I was struck by was the lack of opportunity for the people. Remember (the late comedian) Sam Kinison’s joke in the 1980s, which I thought was funny at the time but was really destructive? He said, ‘You live in a f—g desert. Move, move.’ We truly do not understand how fortunate we are with where we were born on the longitude, latitude scale and what a difference that can mean in the course our life can take. It can mean the difference in having the opportunity to become an actor, doctor or a writer or struggling every day for food to feed yourself and your children. God forbid when they get sick. What would you do?

But there’s a great verve and understanding because they deal with death and survival. We don’t have that. It’s a wisdom we don’t understand. As I think about it, that leads me to my character and Cate’s story in this film. They’re a couple who are used to having a pharmacy down the road. We can get anything we want—doctors and all. So our characters don’t think when they just say, ‘Great, we’ll go to Morocco,’ it’s the romantic idea of going to another country. They don’t think about what would happen if they were to get into some kind of accident and how they would deal with it. They’re not accustomed to the lack of services and opportunities. (But in the US), we grow up with the American dream—that we can be anything we want. That’s the most lasting impact Africa has on me. It goes back to the issue of equality. It makes me and others I work with want to even out that playing field in some way.

Some reports claimed that you got married yesterday. And can you talk about the message you are sending by having an American baby in Africa?
No, not true (on the first one). But (we are) just as dedicated. Two people with our track record, you know (laughter). Namibia served a twofold purpose. I’ll tell you a funny story. I was told this after the fact. At a meeting of the African Union, the Minister of Tourism from Namibia was asking South Africa, “How do we help ourselves with tourism? No one knows we exist. People don’t come here.” That was about two months before we went there (laughing) but we may have ruined a good thing. There was a search for where we can bring this child into the world and have some semblance of privacy for ourselves and our kids, especially her (Shiloh), and especially this idea that she could be part of another place. She was given a Namibian passport. That will bring us back there and at the same time we can invest in that place that Angie had been to before and fallen in love with. We can help out a little bit with their programs. There are great programs going on there. They’re doing some good things on the equality and opportunity front. It was more of an instinct than an actual defining reason why it (Namibia) was right on these levels. Namibia just felt right for us and that was our goal from the beginning. We knew it would be a circus here. We had some romanticized ideas too—going deep in the Congo. But it was more instinctual on our part.

Has fatherhood exceeded your expectations?
Yes. They (the children) define what they want to be. You can’t really push them in any direction. The fun part of being a parent is trying different things on the kids and seeing what they’re drawn to and what they’re not. It’s almost like putting an array of musical instruments out in front of them and finding out which one they’d go for. Unfortunately, ours went for drums (laughter).

Have your kids exceeded your expectations?
Oh yeah, absolutely. As I said before, I am not joking around. I’m looking for a soccer team (laughter). I want to compete in the World Cup.

Since the Mexican portion of this film’s story deals with the immigration issue, can you comment on how cruel the experience can be for people who are not allowed to enter this country legally?

I’m really not knowledgeable enough to speak on it. But I like what Thomas L. Friedman (three-time Pulitzer prize winner, The New York Times’ foreign-affairs columnist and pro-immigration advocate) said—something to the extent of proper control but bigger gates (The exact quote is, “Personally, I favor a very high fence, with a very big gate.”). My worry is if we become too isolationist, we’re going to choke ourselves.

JP Fan, what lucky star was Ellen Barkin born under to wind up in that room with those 12 amazing men–the only female?? She looks fantastic, actually adorable in the trailer. She very much reminds of Angie Dickinson, the actress in the 60’s who hung with the original, authentic Rat Pack, was rumored to be involved with JFK, etc.

I hope I don’t miss the interview with Ann Curry or the coverage of Cannes, but if I do, I know I’ll only have to say the word and someone here will link on the video of anything anyone needs or wants. That is why I love Just Jared and the Brad and Angie fans here, one and all.

Angelina Jolie is a good example of someone who really puts her time into bettering the lives of so many children.What I don’t understand is the media’s criticism (of Jolie’s) involvement in humanitarian aide and why they question her motives and sincerity, said Tea. It’s like, Who cares? She’s doing a good job and putting so much of her time and money in the causes.

Yeah, she’s got something special. She has a natural hold over her own appearance. She is genuinely beautiful. It’s a natural beauty. A lot of today’s celebrities spend three hours in make- up before they come out looking shiny, and anyone can do that. I’ve seen Jolie with no make- up on and she is still stunning. It’s extremely unusual. She carries herself well. She’s not one of these divas who comes across as demanding everything all the time. I’m sure she requires a high level of maintenance but she comes across as someone who wouldn’t demand a table in a restaurant or any of that rubbish. She seems down to earth, and all the more beautiful because of it.

Having travelled the world looking for leading ladies for two of the biggest budget classical epics ever made, I’ve learnt some things about what constitutes beauty. I first saw her on the set of a 007 film with Oliver Stone, wearing a hard hat. Even then she just exuded something very special. I then worked with her on Alexander. Her face, feature for feature, is not classically beautiful, but she is one of the most beautiful people I have ever seen on screen. It is something which you can’t quite put your finger on. Her grace, her poise, the way she moves. She doesn’t compare to the screen goddesses of old because she is cut from a completely different cloth ” she is a star for our times, with a very modern type of grace.

If she were fresh out of Rada or Lamda or wherever, and she walked into my offices I would instruct the nearest person to restrain her until we had cast her in something. She has got it.

Angelina Jolie lives in two worlds: Hollywood, where she makes movies and stays in five-star hotels, and the refugee camps of Africa and Asia, where she works with the UN, bringing hope to the homeless. She feels most alive, most herself, she says, working with people who’ve endured great losses yet still feel grateful for life.
At 24, Jolie won an Oscar for playing a sociopath in Girl, Interrupted, but found little satisfaction in stardom or the wealth that came with it. The daughter of actor Jon Voight and actress Marcheline Bertrand, she had already seen the downside of celebrity — her parents divorced when Jolie was a toddler. And she now says the exploits of her wild-child youth were mostly an attempt to fill an emptiness she felt inside. After she finished shooting Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Jolie volunteered to be a UN ambassador and returned to Cambodia to visit refugee camps. She found a calling, and realized that her fame and money could be used to accomplish a world of good.
Now the mother of son Maddox, 3, whom she adopted in Cambodia, Angelina Jolie hopes to adopt more children. We caught up with her in Beverly Hills on a day away from the set. She talked to us about her role as the mother of Alexander the Great (played by Colin Farrell) in her new movie, Alexander, her passion for helping the dispossessed, and her longing for a partner with whom she might share it all.
RD: Did you always want children?
Jolie: I always felt that I wasn’t going to be a mother. I knew that to be a parent, nothing about me could be self-destructive, or unsure day to day. I never thought I could be that balanced.
RD: So your son helped you find the balance?
Jolie: He did calm me down, and I have a sense of peace. It made me tougher, because I changed my life overnight, to make our life better. It’s the greatest thing that ever happened in my life, my son.
RD: You first saw Maddox when you went to Cambodia for the UN. Did he pick you, or did you pick him?
Jolie: I think it was mutual. I had never held a baby in my life. I was one of those women — people would say, “Do you want to hold my baby?” and I was like “No … ”
There were about 14 kids in the orphanage, and he was the last child I saw. They put him in my arms, and he was still asleep. Then they put him in a bath, and he stayed asleep. Then I sat with him and he opened his eyes and just stared at me for the longest time. Then he smiled.
RD: How old was he?
Jolie: Three months when I met him, seven months when he came home.
RD: Was it a big adjustment?
Jolie: I felt like I needed to earn being a mother, so in some ways I made it overly difficult. In our house, no one helped me. I’d shower while Maddox was in a bouncy thing, or try to brush my teeth with him attached to me. A few times, I came down in a blanket without a shirt on, because I couldn’t figure out how to do it while I was holding him.
RD: Your marriage to Billy Bob Thornton was breaking up around then.
Jolie: Yes, it was a difficult time for my marriage, but it was the happiest time in my life as a woman.
RD: I read that Billy Bob said about you, “I was afraid of her. She was too beautiful, too smart. She had too much integrity. I felt small next to her.” Are men afraid of you?
Jolie: I’m not very settled. The positive side of that is I’m on fire all the time, to try anything. The negative side is there isn’t a lot of time for me to sit and watch a movie and hold hands. I tend to not be inside my relationships. I tend to be more focused on the world. It takes a certain kind of man to love those things.
RD: Does a child need a father?
Jolie: I have men in my life. I have a brother. So Maddox will have male teachers. I was raised without a father.
RD: But you knew who your father was. You saw him sometimes.
Jolie: Yeah, but I don’t necessarily think that’s better. I didn’t have a good relationship with my father. Growing up, I saw my mother very stressed, often, and crying a lot. I didn’t want that for my son. I believe the only people that should be around a child and raising a child are people who absolutely, 100 percent love that child.
Disheartening
RD: Your father said recently that he wants to reconcile and repair the damage he’s done. Are you interested?
Jolie: No, no. I think it’s not something you tell the press; I think it’s something you do in your private life. Fortunately, I got to a place in my life where I realized that, no matter what he said, I was a good person, and a good friend, and I am a good mother. And because I’m an adoptive mother, I don’t see blood as family. I see time and love — you earn it. You can’t just call yourself a father.
I don’t hate my father. I don’t blame him for divorcing my mother, or having affairs. He went off path. I don’t respect the way he treated my family as I was growing up. But we survived, and we’re a good family. I just don’t want to dedicate one more tear, or watch my mother cry one more time.
RD: Your son has gone from being an orphan in a poor village to the adored son of a movie star. You know what the challenges are of being a movie star’s child. How are you going to deal with that?
Jolie: He will occasionally be a part of Hollywood, and visit me on the set. But he will know what the real world is, and how much his mother cares about that. He travels with me on all my UN trips. He’s already got two passports — his first one’s full.
RD: Do you want to adopt again?
Jolie: I have a dream of having children from around the world and letting them grow up together. I’m going to see how I handle two and three, because I’m a single mother, and it’s not easy. I’d love to have eight, but I don’t know if I could.
RD: Tell us about your work in the refugee camps, and your work with the UN.
Jolie: It wasn’t intentional. I went to Cambodia for Tomb Raider, and it dawned on me how much I didn’t know, that there was a country where I couldn’t walk in certain areas because it was riddled with land mines. Then I learned that my own country hadn’t signed a treaty to ban land mines. I traveled more and began reading. I read about the UNHCR — United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. You realize there were refugees since the dawn of time. Nearly 20 million people are under the care of the UNHCR. I thought, How is that possible?
RD: You’ve started foundations …
Jolie: I have the Maddox Relief Project, which deals with Cambodia, and my Jolie Foundation, which helps children in orphanages. Then there’s an animal orphanage in Namibia I work with.
RD: Do you work in places in the United States that have needs?
Jolie: I’m part Native American — Iroquois Indian on my mother’s side. I have an organization called the All Tribes Foundation that’s been trying to do a lot with Pine Ridge reservation, working through the elders. And I sponsor a poster contest every year in grade schools. Students draw pictures for Refugee Day in Washington. To get thousands of children thinking about that issue is great. If there’s a kid in school that’s from another country, instead of making fun, maybe they’ll be more open to where he came from, or what he fought through.
RD: Do you get puzzled stares in Hollywood for your involvement in this work?
Jolie: I’ll get, “What are you reading?” I’ll say, “Oh, something about Burma.” And they’ll say something like, “That’s great. Are you going on vacation?” There are a lot of good people, too, and I’d like to find a way they could help. I had a fund-raiser at my house for [banning] land mines a few years ago. There were 40 people and great speakers. I think the money raised by all those people, who had quite a lot of money, was maybe twice what I paid to put the event together. So if the party was $2,000, it raised $4,000. I know the money I have. I know what those people have. I was kind of disheartened that there was not as much generosity. So I haven’t had another fund-raiser. I’d rather just give it from my own pocket.Longing for Love
RD: Does being a celebrity give you a platform?
Jolie: It allows me to do certain things. If I do a movie like Tomb Raider, with a big audience, it probably helps me. If I decide to go visit a school in the middle of Kenya, or Russia, the kids will be excited. That’s better than having an Oscar.
I went through a depression when I was first famous, because what was I famous for? I didn’t do anything great. And I didn’t discover anything wonderful.
When I’m in a refugee camp, my spirit feels better there than anywhere else in the world, because I am surrounded by such truth, and family. I feel so connected to just simply being a human being. In these countries, they don’t know who I am. I am useful as a woman who’s willing to spend a day in the dirt. Maybe it was important for me to know that.
RD: Tell us about your new movie, Alexander. What drew you to the character you play?
Jolie: She’s a very interesting mother. She won’t allow Alexander to grow up with any fear. She wants him to be extremely hard and brutal; she encourages violence. It was at a time in history when, if he wasn’t strong in battle, he could get killed. Today, we can raise our sons to do what they love, even if they’re not great at it. She had to raise a son for greatness, because that was how he was going to survive.
RD: You had a pretty rough youth.
Jolie: Like everybody, I went through a teen stage, mine probably in some ways worse than others.
RD: You once had an interest in cutting yourself, of drawing your own blood.
Jolie: I think it’s hard for average people to understand things like that. I forever wanted to feel more alive. I did turn to the cutting, and the blood, because then your heart’s pumping, and you’re bleeding. You’re alive.
RD: Was there a time when you didn’t want to live?
Jolie: Absolutely. I felt very empty inside. I felt like nothing mattered to me. I still have a long way to go in figuring out who I am, but I know I can be of use to others. I can help give a voice to people who aren’t as able to speak for themselves. I can be a mom — and I know what my son’s life would be like if I didn’t make that choice. I feel useful in my life.
RD: Did the refugee camps change your perspective?
Jolie: Oh, God, yeah. I really had no idea of the imbalance of the world, and how fortunate I was. My neighbors in Cambodia are land mine victims, and they never complain about anything. They play music; they smile; they raise their kids. They all work together. You put them next to somebody who’s stuck on the freeway on his way to his big office, and it puts the world in a totally different perspective.
RD: Is there anything you haven’t done that you’d like to do?
Jolie: I’m sure I will live a life of great adventure. I will help where I can. The one thing I am not sure of is if I will do it alone. I would like to believe that I’m going to share my life with somebody, one day. There’s something bittersweet when you wake up in the middle of the night, or something amazing happens — your son walks for the first time — and you don’t have that other person who’s going to remember that forever with you. That’s kind of the one sadness. But if I only get one great love in my life, him being my son, I’ll take him.
RD: And if you get another love, what will he be like?
Jolie: The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be an amazing father, a compassionate, strong, independent individual. I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today. I don’t have that with anyone in my life except my son. My son somehow thinks I can do everything. …RD November 2004

i like George…i’ve seen his movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”…..it’s a funny movie but at the same time it is a sad movie esp. at the end…all the actors including Porgie are very good and he is also good in Syriana….he deserves his Oski… :-D
