Angelina Jolie sits down with NBC News’ Ann Curry to talk about A Mighty Heart, her extensive humanitarian work, Brad Pitt and their four children, and the recent death of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand.
The interview will air on The Today Show @ 7AM ET/PT and Dateline NBC @ 10PM ET/PT Wednesday, May 23.
So if I asked you, for example, right now — what’s something that’s untrue that you would like to say right now is not true… you wouldn’t know what was untrue that was written about you? No.
Nothing? No. I mean, I can assume. I know there’s a cycle of certain things that they keep rewriting or whatever, but I can assume things are made up. But no, I haven’t a clue. (laughter) And why would I, you know? There’s nothing I have to hide or defend. You know, I’m gonna live my life. And there are gonna be times when people wanna try to attack me and I don’t know why, but they will. And that’s okay.
It’s okay? Well, there are other things I’m more concerned about. My kids are healthy. I have a lot I want to do in this world. Before I do, I wanna do a lot of things as a woman, as a mom, and that’s my focus. At the end of the day, I’m gonna be dead… and what people say about me is gonna be what I accomplished and what I did in my life and how my children are.
Is there anything you’d like to say to people listening now because you now have an unedited audience here — an unedited opportunity — to give people to unvarnished truth about who you are and what you stand for. Is there anything that you want to say about yourself? No. I mean… I have always been honest about who I am, and I’ve always been very outspoken to press. I think people have heard a lot from me (laughter) over the years. And - and you do hear more, you know?… People wanna believe negative things, they will. And I can’t help that.

Jolie on her role as Mariane Pearl
It’s interesting. I was reading that you were actually six months pregnant when you first talked to Mariane. I was six months pregnant and –
But that helped you empathize? But it [did]. It was also a very interesting thing because for as much as I was kind of waddling around and feeling the heat, I couldn’t help but look over at this woman and think, “God, she is where I’m at now and I’m having — and not just the physical thing of being pregnant and, oh, that’s difficult. And I have this man with me who’s helping me through this and loves me.”
And it’s a joyous moment. And we’re about to now also have a baby, and we’re gonna look at this baby together across the room at each other. And it’s all those things that make that so much more. And to not just physically be thinking, “God, how is this woman physically dealing with trying to maintain her strength and take care of this baby that’s inside of her, working so hard and having so much emotional stress?”
But on top of it, what that took away from her. What that took away from this time in their life, this is the happiest time in their life. And what that must be. I just can’t imagine. I thought about that when I was breastfeeding. I thought about that all through kind of the birth of, you know, that haunted me and when I was sitting here quiet, I would think, “God, just a few months after, what is that like? What is that like?”
To play her was not easy. To play her at this time of her life was not easy. I’ve played real people before, but I never knew them. And, you’d think that would be easier. (laughs) I did. But the day before we started shooting, I had hardly slept and I was in a panic. I had gotten to know her and I’d gotten to know their son. And the thought that he would see this one day… It was my responsibility to not just show the world but also show him how much his mother loved his father and how much they loved each other and how they handled this time.
It was something that haunted me through the whole thing and haunted, I think, everybody involved. Nobody ever really voiced that and nobody really talked about it, but I’m sure it was something that she did become a friend.
So how do you play [that role?]- I’m sure if somebody said to you, “Your great girlfriend has gone through the most horrible thing in her life. Why don’t you stand up and show us what she went through and how it felt?”

In a separate interview, Brad Pitt talks to Curry about his behind-the-scenes role as a producer on “A Mighty Heart,” which is produced by his Plan B shingle in conjunction with Revolution films. Dede Gardner and Andrew Eaton, two producers of the movie, also join Pitt in the interview. Pitt also discusses his global charity work with Jolie.
Brad Pitt, on his humanitarian work with Jolie and what people can do to help:The thing is just generating the will to understand. And that means focusing on certain events. Because it’s not all coming across our airwaves… and really investigating if something doesn’t feel right.
Generally, I would say it’s just not enough anymore to say that “it’s entertainment and enjoyment.” For me personally I’m saying, in my life, if you can move the ball forward a little bit… that’s what this is about. Where is it going to go? The interesting thing is how it evolves for me individually for myself, and watching the same with Angie. But where’s it gonna go? I’m not gonna stop.
We can have our things. And that is just getting your hands dirty, rolling up your sleeves a little bit and seeing where it takes you. And where it can, where you can best help. Where you’d be most effective. But there’s a lot of studying do.

Of course, I can’t wait to see this, and I really like Ann Curry, BUT she interupts Angie too much! She did it on the Namibia interview when Angie was pregnant. More than once Angie started to say something and Ann cut her off, and I see it again here. Angie says, “I was six months pregnant and - “, and Ann jumps in with another question! Shoot, Ann! I wanted to know what Angie was going to say! Grrr…
Anyhoo, it does appear Ann let her talk part of the time since she did say wonderful things about empathizing with MP, and also about Brad, specifically, “I have this man here with me helping me through this who loves me”, and what she said about looking forward to looking at him after Shiloh was born. Angie is careful though it appears, not to say “Brad”, or “Shiloh”. I guess she doesn’t want people to focus too much on that, and more about the feelings themselves as related to MP.
Also, I adore, ADORE, that Angie has this don’t-give-a-damn attitude towards the tabliod press. How delicious is that? Because Angie knows, the ONE thing tabbies want is denials, for the celebs to address them publicly, and crying over their lying stories, and DRAMA about it all, and Angie, Goddess Bless Her, just refuses to give them that validity!! I LOVE IT! Angie, you go, girl! She is doing a wonderful job of just flying above it all. She is confident and secure in her life. What a perfect example composed poise under pressure.

Hello everybody,
My husband kept his promise and he took me to Cannes. I have been having very bad non-stop headache and dizziness in last 4-5 weeks. I was told to get a scan for my head by my doctor. I took the scan yesterday morning (which was my birhtday). Thank God, there is nothing to worry about.
My husband promised me to take me to Cannes if the scan result is OK. Because in Cannes now, it is impossible to breath now. He was also so sure that I shan’t able to see them. I was really very very lucky on my birthday; I take it as a special birthday present! I have seen them!!!! :)
Brad is unbelievably beautiful in person; when you see him, you keep on looking at him, staring at him. You fear to blink because you don’t want to lose him from your sight. He looks so confident. You got a feeling that he knows that you are there. He looks as if he sees every person around him. At least, I got that feeling.
For Angelina, she is perfect, as only her thin legs are slightly spoiling her PHYSICAL PERFECTION. Her legs are not ugly but little much thicker can not be bad. She looks strong but little coy around Brad (this is my opinion). When she looks at your way, she makes you to think that she looks beyond, she looks far far away. I found her smile melancholic for a few seconds.
Angelina will look great even if she wears a rice sack but I would like to fire whoever is dressing her up.
When I saw them separetely, I thought that her and his beauty can’t get better. But I was wrong because they look completed with each other, when they stand together. They make you feel good.
Shiloh is the combination of these two most beautiful people in the world. I can’t even imagine how breathtaking she will be.

An Oscar-worthy role that was intended for Jennifer Aniston has been given to Angelina Jolie. It was announced Thursday that Jolie, 31, will play Mariane Pearl in a film adaptation of her book, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl. Mariane is the widow of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered while covering a story in Pakistan in 2002. Brad Pitt will produce the film, directed by Michael Winterbottom.
Pitt and Aniston, who co-owned the production company Plan B, bought the rights to the book when they were still married, with the idea that Jen would star in the film adaptation. Jen ceded her stake in the company after the couple divorced in 2005, leaving Pitt to cast his baby-mama in the starring role.
Mariane Pearl, who is believed to have visited Pitt and Jolie during their stay in Nambia, said in a statement: “I am delighted that Angelina Jolie will be playing my role in the adaptation of my book. I deeply admire her work and what she is committed to.”
A Mighty Heart is the first on-screen role Jolie has accepted since the birth of daughter Shiloh Nouvel, born in Namibia in May. Last week she agreed to lend her voice to a tiger in the animated film Kung Fu Panda, also starring Jack Black.
I love Angie especially her humanitarian work. She influenced a lot of people like Brad and other celebrities to help this planet a better place to live in. Keep up the good work, Angie!!

Jenifer Aniston once almost gave up her acting career. Just before being selected for the hit sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Jennifer’s acting career seemed to be headed nowhere and she almost gave it up.
Her latest film opposite boyfriend Vince Vaughan topped the US box office in its first week of release earning $38.1 million in its first three days.

The role was not jennifer’s when they divorced plan b and jennifer said so herself that she took the projects that she wanted mighty heart was not one of them. Marianne had final say over who was cast and jennifer was not set to play her she said she would like to nothing was confirmed and before people start with angie stole that role from her they should check their facts instead of posting up snippets from tabloids and what their take on it is. Marianne was the one who sought after angie for the role and asked her to play her she even confirmed it again yesterday at the press conference so stop jumping on the aniston pity train she should have put things straight a long time ago but we all know that’s not how she works.

The bash, thrown aboard a £80-million super yacht moored off Cap d’Antibes, is being thrown in aid of the Darfur Crisis. Organised by Warner Bros at an estimated cost of £2.5 million, the extravagent event will feature a four-course banquet including lobster and a choice of five desserts, an outdoor Jacuzzi filled with rose petals, magicians, a casino, and surprise entertainment reportedly from rapper Snoop Dogg. Both George Clooney and Matt Damon, in town for the premiere of Brad’s film Ocean’s Thirteen, are expected to be among the revellers.

Enjoyed reading the description of your sightings. I can’t say I was that keen on the brown blouse of Angelina’s but that shade of brown isn’t my colour at all. However, I guess it was a deliberate attempt not to shine too much because I think both Brad and Angelina wanted the focus to be on mariane. That’s why Mariane was in teh centre of the press conference table.

Angelina Jolie has decided to take a year off to spend time with her family, PEOPLE has learned.
“I’m working this summer. I’m in Prague for a few months, then I take two months off, then I work for two months,” Jolie said Tuesday while promoting A Mighty Heart at the Cannes Film Festival. “And then I take a year off.”
Asked if the time off will be for her family, she replied: “Yes.”
Jolie was speaking to reporters at the exclusive Hotel du Cap while partner Brad Pitt, who produced Heart, looked after their four children in a nearby villa. It was not clear whether Pitt would also take a hiatus in 2008.
The couple walked the Cannes red carpet Monday night for the world premiere of A Mighty Heart along with Mariane Pearl, on whose memoir the film is based, and her son Adam.
The Pitt-Jolie clan will remain at their villa on the French Riviera for several more days more as Pitt premieres Ocean’s Thirteen.
Jolie also told reporters on Tuesday about her recent pilot license upgrade the possibility of flying en famille. “Brad has his pilot’s license and I just got my instrument rating, so we’re moving forward with that but we haven’t had a lot of time because of the kids and with Pax coming home,” she said.
“I wouldn’t fly the kids at this moment. I would only fly the kids if I had been actively flying for a few months and when I’m not at all rusty.”
Jolie, a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR, insisted she will continue her campaign for justice around the world, even though there have been concerns for her safety: “I don’t want to live inside a box. I will be smart, but I will lead a very bold life, and I will learn about the world.”
Asked by PEOPLE how she is enjoying her time in France with her family, Jolie smiled and replied: “It’s lovely. It’s been lovely.”

Angie is def not preg now. She was drinking and also she has one more movie to do, I think (as someone posted). I think she will be preg at the end of 2007 or early 2008. I think they get preg first then adopt a year or two later.
I hope that AMH does well in the box office for a film of this nature. I think if the movie does well, Mariane will get a share. I hope she does because I sincerely doubt she is completely financially secure - certainly not from the proceeds of her husband, Danny’s life insurance alone. Perhaps the book royalties may have helped.
Also, I have a hunch that if AMH does turn a profit, a chunk of that will go towards Adam Pearl’s future and another chunk to the Daniel Pearl Foundation. The rest will probably go towards the Jolie Pitt Foundation. So, I hope it does well.
Mariane said she wanted the book and the film to reflect Daniel and her beliefs in the goodness of human beings. I will watch that film with that in mind.

Hooray! She might not be preggers now, but I think that taking one year off means that they are planning their bio-baby soon. So I gather she will be doing The Changeling for Clint Eastwood, and then take the year off (while Atlas Shrugged screenplay is still being done) for the kids. Lucky Angie! Most working mothers would love to be able to take the time off and devote themselves to their children!
So I am assuming Brad will be the busy one since he alone will bring home the bacon.

Simply put, the Michael Winterbottom film is an exceptional piece of work, deeply affecting and filmmaking of the highest order.
In purely Hollywood terms, the film is a certain Oscar nominee. Everyone involved in “A Mighty Heart” — from Winterbottom to Jolie as Pearl’s widow, Mariane, to Dan Futterman as Daniel Pearl — can be proud of a job very well done.
Based on the book by Mariane Pearl, the film follows the pregnant Mariane as searches for her husband following his disappearance in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2002. At the time, Daniel Pearl was writing a story about shoe bomber Richard Reid.

In PEOPLE interview Angie said she is working this summer in Prague, will take a few months off, will take two more months of work, and then take a year off. So I think she will do Clint Eastwood movie, then quit for a year.
Have you guys watched the Inside Edition coverage of Brad and Angie at Cannes? I did not watch it yesterday but just saw it at Pittimpressions and they show Brad and Angie walking inside the theatre and there is a standing ovation and thunderous applause from the crowd inside the theatre. :)

Angie and Mariene have more in common then chin chin because of their children. And I am sure that Mariene prefer Angie over chin chin.

Daniel Pearl was murdered in January 2002. His wife, Marianne, gave birth to their son, Adam, later that year. (Angelina Jolie was still with Billy Bob Thornton at that time.) Jolie then met Pitt (who, because of his wife, Jennifer Aniston, owned the rights to film Marianne’s story) in 2004, they began their affair, and in 2005, Jolie took the part of Marianne in the film “A Mighty Heart” from Aniston. Marianne’s son Adam was 2-3 years old before Jolie ever had anything to do with Marianne Pearl!
Jolie simply cannot tell the truth, if she even knows what it is.
Oh!!!! And A Mighty Heart completely SUCKS!!!! Jolie cannot play a biracial woman. Previews and test audiences do NOT BUY it because Jolie not only sucks but audiences can’t see past Jolie’s manipulative lies and homewrecking. English is a second language to me but I perfectly understood that she meant Brad. I think they understood it but tried to twist story.
When I listen to Angie saying this, I wondered what Brad was feeling.
I think Brad/Angie went through similar experience while preparing and making this films - what would happen if your significant other is dead. I think this is why Brad had the line of tattoo on his arm- quote form MP’ book. I believe meaning of the tattoo is that even if you do not have physical existence, your spirit is living with your love.

The sad saga of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl has made it to the bigscreen with facts, figures and beating heart intact in “A Mighty Heart.” In his first studio venture, Michael Winterbottom coaxes forth a staggering wealth of detail from this terse, methodical account of Pearl’s kidnapping and murder in Pakistan, seen through the eyes of those who sought his return. Given audiences’ resistance to films dealing with 9/11 and its aftermath, soberly restrained pic reps a mighty tough sell, though Angelina Jolie’s performance as Pearl’s widow should broaden prospects for the June 22 Stateside release.
Adapting Mariane Pearl’s harrowing memoir, director Winterbottom, who previously ventured into Mideast politics with “In This World” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” proves to be just the man for the task. Though the prolific British chameleon isn’t one to make the same film twice, his gifts for docudrama storytelling — an ability to shepherd complicated narratives, avoiding every opportunity for sensationalism in favor of a low-key mounting dread — couldn’t be better suited to the material.
Having covered the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pearls were working as journalists in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 23, 2002 — the day Danny (”Capote” scribe Dan Futterman), chasing a story about foiled shoe bomber Richard Reid, got into a cab and never returned. Sticking close to the very pregnant Mariane (Jolie), pic recounts the restless five-week search for the man’s whereabouts and his kidnappers’ identities, all accompanied by a hailstorm of media attention.
Screenplay crisply diagrams the labyrinth of false leads and fruitless interrogations with various middlemen Danny may have had contact with on the night of his disappearance. Suspicion ultimately comes to rest on the elusive Omar Saeed Sheikh (Alyy Khan), a known Islamic militant with a history of kidnapping foreigners.
Like his fellow suspects, Sheikh is seen only briefly, and in the most objective possible light. Working in the brisk, discursive style of a police procedural, Winterbottom scrupulously follows the rescue effort, step by agonizing step — ensuring that the audience is never given additional information despite its foreknowledge of the tragic outcome. Even larger political questions — the implications, say, of a scene in which a Pakistani suspect is strung up and interrogated, or the grim irony of a journalist couple facing intense media scrutiny — are subjugated to the flow of the storytelling.
Along the way, pic also manages to sketch vivid portraits of Mariane’s key supporters and allies. These include Danny’s tough-minded colleague, Asra Nomani (Archie Panjabi); a local cop (Irffhan Khan), known simply as Captain, determined not to let the case soil Pakistan’s reputation; American diplomatic security agent Randall Bennett (Will Patton), who tends to see the silver lining in all bad news; and Wall Street Journal higher-up John Bussey (Denis O’Hare), who arrives in Pakistan after news of the ordeal, a comforting but resilient figure.
But this is ultimately — and very intimately — Mariane Pearl’s story, and much of it rests on Jolie, who fits comfortably into the naturalistic mold that shapes the entire ensemble. Though Jolie sports a big belly, a high-coiffed hairstyle and a very challenging accent (raised in France, Mariane is of Afro-Cuban and Dutch descent), this isn’t the sort of commanding star turn in which the performer vanishes behind a well-known celebrity mask, but rather a subdued, carefully considered portrait of a woman caught between premature grief and persistent hope.
Jolie plays Mariane as sharp and prickly, but also highly principled and completely devoted to her husband. Wisely, Winterbottom opts to shoot her more high-pitched outbursts from a distance or in near-darkness, as if refusing to milk more histrionics than necessary.
Occasional subdued flashbacks to happier days from Mariane and Danny’s marriage, including a very brief love scene, add emotional texture even as they take something away from the film’s otherwise unsentimental approach.
Pic negotiates its way around another potential landmine — to show or not to show the widely circulated video of Pearl’s murder — re-creating a very brief, non-graphic snippet of the contentious footage and getting the facts across with the utmost restraint.
Shot on location in Pakistan, India and France, the film gains considerable authenticity and momentum from its handheld DV lensing by Winterbottom’s regular d.p., Marcel Zyskind, and Peter Christelis’ rapid editing, rarely allowing a shot to last more than a few seconds.

“A Mighty Heart”
Given her tabloid noteriety, is it possible for Angelina Jolie to even register a performance anymore? That is, when on screen, can she make you believe that you are not looking at Angelina Jolie? That’s just one of the questions going through my mind before seeing A Mighty Heart, the much-bruited film adaptation of Mariane Pearl’s memoir starring Jolie as Pearl, co-produced by Jolie’s companion Brad Pitt, and directed by Michael Winterbottom. (Pearl was the wife of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in early 2002. Mariane, also a journalist, was five months pregnant with their son at the time.)
The answer to the question is “kind of.” Which is not to say that Jolie does not perform to the fullest of her capabilities, or that she is ineffective. But what makes her convincing here has as much to do with how she is shot as what she does.
The ever astute Winterbottom has cast the film as a procedural and an ensemble piece. Contrary to what many might have inferred from the production stills, official-and-non, that emerged during the making of the film, this is not a picture wherein a lone Mariane Pearl wanders wide-eyed through the streets of Karachi in a heroic search for her missing spouse. Mariane spends most of the time in the rented house of a friend and colleague (Archie Panjabi), surrounded by a partially ad hoc team—a Pakistani police captain, an American diplomat, a couple of Wall Street Journal staffers, etc.—trying to piece together the hows and whys of Pearl’s abduction. (Pearl himself is played very well by Dan Futterman in his likable straight-shooter mode.)
Winterbottom appears to understand that no matter how much she is made up (here she is given a darker complexion and ringletted hair to better resemble the Afro-Cuban/Dutch Pearl; she looks pretty much just like herself regardless), there is no way an audience is going to look at her onscreen and NOT see Angelina Jolie. He employs a couple of strategies to tackle this. In the initial sequences of the film, he rarely puts her in the frame all by herself; she’s always in part of some bustle, even if she’s in the foreground. He also cuts very quickly; he doesn’t give her any “moments.” Thus, he makes her just a part of what he’s weaving, much of which involves getting the viewer as deep as film possibly can get one into the feel of Karachi. Winterbottom’s particularly good with environments, and he’s also a deft, quick storyteller, and he juggles chronology in a way that gives us a quick, empathy-generating read of Daniel and Mariane’s passionate involvement while moving the kidnap tale at almost full throttle.
Later, at moments when Mariane is most emotionally fraught, Winterbottom makes us not see Jolie by sort of not showing her to the viewer; he will shoot her from behind, or in silhouette. We don’t get a full-on, well lit face-forward shot of Mariane screaming until she’s giving birth to her and Daniel’s son Adam. And by this point of the film, it works.
As does, I should say, the rest of the picture, which is involving and moving in the mode of another war-zone Winterbottom picture, Welcome to Sarajevo. Jolie and Pitt were very smart to get a director who doesn’t do star turns to do Jolie’s star turn. I dare say she’s got at least an Oscar nomination locked.

The film charts the hollow weeks Danny is missing mostly through Mariane’s eyes. The house of a close colleague becomes headquarters during the desperate search for motives and information.
There is a confusion of investigators treading on each other toes, and contradictory information about who might have snatched Pearl. Leaks and rash speculation in the press add to the vertiginous panic. At times it’s difficult to know who exactly is in charge. A terrific cast of fixers and officials tease out clues from laptops, emails, and telephone numbers. An uneasy alliance is gradually forged between an American diplomatic security agent, Randall Bennett (Will Patton), various Wall Street Journal friends including the editor, John Bussey (Denis[correct] O’Hare), the head of the Pakistan’s brand new counter-terrorism unit, Captain (Irrfan Khan), the Citizens Police Liaison Committee, and the FBI.
At the still centre of this increasingly tense investigation is Jolie’s defiant Mariane. The film shuttles manically between meetings, endless telephone calls, the growing media frenzy, and the streets of Karachi with terrific confidence. What the kidnapping means to each character is etched on their faces. The power of this giant documentary-style jigsaw lies between the rumours, the false leads, and the hard details. Winterbottom captures brilliantly the chaos of daily life in Pakistan, and the febrile atmosphere as Pearl is first denounced as a CIA spy, and then – when his Jewish roots are fatally exposed – an agent for Mossad.
The director’s rapid-fire and choppy editing gives you a genuine feel for the many different sides of Karachi, and the urgency of the investigation. Shots of street vendors and overloaded buses are slotted between armed raids and interrogations. You can almost smell the fear on suspects. And there’s a controversial flavour about the vested, sometimes murky, interests of assorted officials. Ultimately what makes the film such an affecting modern parable is the authenticity of the emotions. Jolie’s blasts of grief when Mariane hears the dreaded news that her husband has been beheaded pricks tears and raises the hairs on your neck.

I’m sorry to have to inform you that there REALLY REALLY ARE PEOPLE THIS STUPID. She is proof of such stupidity. It’s actually got very little to do with IQ and a lot to do with EQ.
Why would Pitt refer to Jolie as “whats-her-name” ??? If you actually say these words out loud, you can feel how cold they are and definately NOT something someone in love says about their partner!! It’s as thought Pitt was ((wanting)) to say something else but stopped himself. Why wouldn’t he say “my darling” or “my angel” like he has about Paltrow - or even “Angie”

Glad your head scan was OK! Yes Cannes is a mad house this time. We lived not too far in the back country of Antibe, and during the festival we stayed away from the beach area since the traffic is just awful. There are some great international film festivals that are shown in many little theatres and we enjoyed that a lot.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie showed their love – and their new movie – to the world’s media Monday as they stepped out arm-in-arm at the Cannes Film Festival.
The couple attended a press conference to discuss A Mighty Heart – in which she stars and he produces, through his Plan B production company.
Jolie admitted she had trepidations about taking on the project and the role of Mariane Pearl, whose husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, 38, was killed by Islamic militants in Pakistan in February 2002. (Actor and Oscar-winning Capote screenwriter Dan Futterman plays Daniel.) “I was very, very nervous to get it right,” said Jolie.
And the outcome? “Mariane seems to think we’ve done all right.”
Pitt, 43, and Jolie, 31, are staying at the exclusive Hotel du Cap, in a villa with their four children: Maddox, 5; Zahara, 2; Pax, 3; and Shiloh, who turns 1 this coming Sunday.
“We got here yesterday, and we had a beautiful day with our kids,” said Jolie, who flew in from the Czech Republic, where she is filming the movie Wanted, with Morgan Freeman. “We’ve been playing with them since the moment we landed, and we plan to go home to them as soon as we are done with this.”
As for her five-star hotel in France’s Cap d’Antibes. “It’s also a beautiful place, and we have an opportunity to enjoy it with our family and enjoy it as friends,” said Jolie.
Pitt said he was captivated by the Pearl story from the moment he started following it on CNN. “It was our goal to see this thing through,” said Pitt. “And to fight hatred.”
Jolie said that despite the serious nature of the film, which tracks Daniel’s kidnapping and his wife’s desperation to save him, she remains able to smile in her downtime. “I am still capable of being silly and having fun,” she said.
At one point, Pitt humorously referred to his partner as “what’s-her-name” (when the press conference’s mediator unexpectedly asked him to comment on a question previously directed to Jolie). He also stressed his and her aim of working together to help improve the planet.
“As a father, too, I look at my kids and realize they will inherit this world,” said Pitt. “And we want to do everything we can to throw our weight in and make it a little bit better.
After the news gathering, PEOPLE asked Pitt how he was finding Cannes. “I’m enjoying it very much, man,” he replied.

A Mighty Heart
They were here today for A Mighty Heart – the screening took place at 10:45am following by a photo call and then a press conference at 1pm.
About the film - very well received, with some comparing Michael Winterbottom’s direction to Michael Mann’s: tightly shot with a journalist’s eye, almost like a reality show without the fake. One of the actor’s at one point during the question period actually said Winterbottom would have followed them into the loo if they were still in character.
Those who were hoping it will suck will be very disappointed. A Might Heart does not suck. Not even close. In fact, it made me cry… because you can’t imagine the strength of this woman – what she went through, how she fought, how in spite of the murder of her husband while pregnant with his child, somehow she manages to continue to believe in humanity.
And even though this post is primarily about smut, I’d be remiss to undercredit the remarkable Mariane Pearl. She is incredibly impressive. Which is why there has been much criticism levelled at the casting: that Angelina and Mariane look nothing alike, that they are from different ethic backgrounds, that in hiring Angelina to play the role, it effectively robbed other actresses with more similar physical characteristics the opportunity.
On film, the resemblance is adequate. You still KNOW it’s Angelina Jolie but it’s not a stretch of the imagination either. More importantly, her acting and her accent do the part justice. She is different in this movie than she has been in others. You know most of the time, when Angelina Jolie delivers a line, because of the nature of her films like Tomb Raider and Mr and Mrs Smith, the delivery is always tinged with a little action hero cheese – like Bruce Willis without a *****?
Well in A Mighty Heart, her speech patterns are different, she’s less of a caricature than she is a character, and she shows more range than she ever has before, and that could explain why they are seriously considering an Oscar run. I’m not sure if I’d go that far but never underestimate the Paramount hype machine. The lips however…the lips are way to distracting. Not in person but definitely on film. Is it possible to make them smaller?
Sorry, I digress.
Mariane Pearl was front and centre during the press conference. The first questions were directed at her. And so in her charming, multilingual way, she addressed questions about her involvement and about how she wanted to tell her story. One of the first things she did therefore was to stress that she herself was the one to pick Angelina Jolie for the part. She approached her, she asked her, and she says she is thrilled with the result. Now is not a celebrity, she is a private person, so she did not give in to that voyeuristic need for all of us to see her emote on a stage when questions about her memories came up. Needless to say, seeing a film chronicling the kidnapping and subsequent death of her husband must have been unimaginably painful. And yet she stayed away from the melodrama and focused instead on the message: she wanted to do justice to Danny’s life and she was grateful for Angelina’s respect of her wishes – she actually went so far as to say something to the effect of “it meant even more because Angelina is someone that I love”. Of course at that point, Angelina almost cried.
And so you can hear that subtle but powerful underlying message, right? Mariane Pearl, who is beyond reproach, has given her stamp of approval to Angelina Jolie. So whose place is it to argue her judgement?
And still…it would unfair to end on that note. Because Mariane Pearl is amazing. She has this way of speaking, of holding herself, of treating the most haunting subject matter with such poise and such peace, it’s hard not to feel comfortable in her presence. Mariane Pearl is all class. And regardless of your feelings about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, her life story is absolutely, 100% worth sharing

Angie did not change her mind. The fact that trashloids religiously and with fundamentalist fervor, put words in her mouth and write it in quotation marks so that imbeciles can take it as gospel, doesnt make it so.
Earlier this year, when Angie brought home their son Pax, she said she would be taking some time to help Paz get adjusted. She didnt give a timeline because the public is not owed one.
It is a given that movie roles arent discussed today and get started in production tomorrow, therefore, it is evident that Angie and Brad know their work schedule up to a year or more in advance, so that they can structure their time and slot in all their important activities and committments.
In this latest interwiew, Angie has merely stated a specific timeline when she will not be doing any movie projects.
NOTE WELL: she DID NOT say she will not be doing ANY of her humanitarian activities during the year that she will be making no movies. As sure as the sun rises every morning, i am sure that during 2008 when Angie travels on behalf of the UN or any other charity which she actively supports, the nasties will be out in droves, pointing their fingers like so many evil witches, and demanding that Angie be burned at the stakes for what their putrid minds conceive to be her lies.

I thought it was crazy enough earlier in the day during the press conference but that was just the press. Out in front of the Palais, where fans had been waiting for hours, they totally lost their ****.
Again, in photos Angelina is always pursing her lips for her pose so it’s hard to tell the body language. But I can tell you that these two are not uncomfortable with their fame. They don’t look awkward up there, it’s absolutely natural, they match stride for stride, slowly, as if they could have been strolling down the Croisette, totally non plussed by the flashbulb explosion – really is quite amazing.
Hardly stepped away from each other the entire time. There was a lot of whispering back and forth, many suggestive glances – again…it’s like porn for me. And even what could be called a girly girl moment with Mariane Pearl… or at least the closest that Angelina Jolie can come to a girly girl moment. At some point the two women looked across from each other and smiled and lifted their shoulders and giggled a little. It’s genuine their friendship, 100% it’s genuine.
Also loved Brad’s affection for little Adam Pearl who was clearly overwhelmed by the situation. There’s no photo of it but as they headed into the Palais after waving to the crowd, Angelina mussed up Adam’s hair and made a silly face and poked him in the armpit. He laughed, she laughed, and then she took Brad’s hand and they entered the theatre.
Again, A Mighty Heart was very well received. I’m told yesterday exceeded their expectations and so as I’ve reported several times, they just might push Angie for Actress – which we knew already – AND the film for Best Picture, regardless of box office performance though predicted to modest at best. Let you know if I hear more.
PS. Most random attendee? Mischa Barton. You think she actually understood what A Mighty Heart was all about???
PPS. Angelina’s dress was one thing…but Brad’s tux? UNBELIEVABLE. Look at that … vest…or whatever you call it. And he WORE it, you know? He.Wore.It.

At the du Cap
Last night, having cocktails at Hotel du Cap on terrace, an Oceans 13 dinner was going on next door at Eden Roc without Brad and Angelina who were at The Might Heart gala. But George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon with Luciana, Andy Garcia, the super rich producers I’m too hung over to name… all of them present, and all of them spilled over back to the du Cap bar just after midnight. Things start late in Cannes.
Was headed to the loo when I spotted Daniel Craig first. Wearing a tux and shorter than I remembered. Saw him at Oscars, from that distance he had some height. But at this distance, like literally half a metre away, not so much. But still…Bond looks quivering in a tux. And very fair. Almost grey though distinguished and a lot of stubble. Girlfriend hovering, hovering all night, almost always by his side.
Just behind Daniel, Andy Garcia in another group laughing, chatting, then making his way over to chat with Bai Ling who was talking up some rich dudes I didn’t recognise and not flashing her nipple. I couldn’t believe it.
But the marquee arrival – all of a sudden George Clooney appears, holding hands with a very tan, very leggy, very tall generic blonde. He leads her to the corner of the terrace which just happens to be right next to us followed by his bodyguards and more powerful producers and proceeds to hold court there for the next hour and half. I could hear his voice in the background the entire evening.
George? SO beautiful. Like… SO beautiful. Tanned naturally, light striped button-down shirt with khakis and very, very thin. Dylan called it scrawny. But again…unbelievably handsome in an Old Hollywood way. Had his hair combed and parted to the side. Now that I think about it actually, he and Brad had the same ‘do last night. Little grown up boy. QUIVER!!!
The blonde was definitely an accessory. Picture him leaning against the terrace, back to the ocean, she kept one arm draped around him, once in a while he would stroke it, once in a while they’d have a private whisper, then he’d go back to his boy’s club conversation with the men and she’d stand there smiling vacantly…can you see it?
She had a friend with her. An attractive brunette who appeared to be assigned to any man not George. High end sleaze, that’s what I call it. But that’s how they roll, the rich and famous especially in Cannes. Besides, as shameful as this sounds, as degrading as this sounds, I would have traded places with her in a second. Seriously, George Clooney is so f&cking hot, he has just flown up to the top of the Freebie Five. Will update it when I can walk a straight line.
Needless to say, everyone wanted a piece of George’s fraternity. At one point, Angelina’s assistant Holly came down to shake a few hands. We thought they were en route, especially since that bodyguard – you know that dude who throttled some pappy in India? – he came down to do a sweep, to check out if the situation was safe for the Pitts.
Unfortunately, there were way too many people for his liking. Either that or they were too tired and went back to their kids. Because they didn’t show…which was kind of a relief. I don’t think I could have maintained my cool…
Besides, we had enough to keep us occupied.
Particularly Daniel Craig in jeans. He changed clothing. Tux was gone replaced by plain white tee shirt and jeans and EVERYTHING was bulging. Arms were bulging, abs were defined, quads were popping out… I was sitting next to a gay man, he could barely control himself. Nor could I.
Daniel and girl made their way over to pay respects to George. At one point, while squeezing past, he touched my back to slide my chair over.
They were drinking Grey Goose straight – Daniel pouring into glasses, passing all around. Like I said, it had a very fraternity feel to it, everyone was in great spirits, a lot of laughing. George has a great laugh. And everyone thinks what he says is funny. It’s kind of nauseating in that private member’s club kind of way, you know what I mean?
And then he left. Hand in hand with the girl and a bodyguard, down the steps into what I can only describe as the palm tree garden, joking all the while with his minder and hand always tucked into hers. But my smutty sense was tingling. Just a feeling. That he’s one of those guys who prefers no hassle, no drama…like Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. She was Julia Roberts, you get where I’m going? That’s exactly what I think it was. I think.
Thanks JJ for 2 more new threads, everyday with you this week, I have to play catch up…but I love it. I can’t wait for the interview tomorrow.

Gawd, if I read one more comment on how skinny AJ is I think I will scream. Just kidding. ::) :):):) There are so many threads I can’t remember where I read it, but someone mentioned that she had long arms, big hands, and skinny legs and that if they could replace x’s body with AJ’s head then she would be beautiful. Holy sh@t Batman, with all of these supposed body defects Angie is always on a most beautiful, most sexy, most wanted, most desired lists and always ranked in the top 5, 10 to 15. On the other hand x doesn’t even make most lists. So apparently her legs, arms and hands don’t matter to those who truly know beauty. Well, when Shiloh poops in her diaper and her dad is the one who is changing her, he works really fast and hard to get rid of the poop because it not only stinks to high heaven, but it is absolutely worthless. He doesn’t talk about it, he doesn’t save pictures of it, he doesn’t cry over it or feel sorry that it is gone. Well, consider his relationship with Aniston on the same level as the poop. It is worthless, it is gone, it needed to be disposed of as soon as possible. There is nothing else to talk about. Was it worth something at one time. Yes. Sure it was. Just like the food that Shiloh eats or milk that she drinks was worth something at one time. But it evolved into something else that was repulsive to both of them so they disposed of it. End of story.
Now, for those of you who still insist on bringing out the x-files, there is a very special program for you called Hooked on Phonics. I heard it does wonders for children and adults. Perhaps you should try it. While you are at it try Barney and the Teletubbies-they used to come on PBS. Maybe if you watch a few episodes you can start to understand.

LOL I so agree with you Mrs. Lenny. And we’ve now seen that our Z is a no-nonsense little lady………she’ll just tell you the way she feels - you do with it what you will………….just like her mommy. Thats so great.
BTW, Adam with his mop of curly hair and his dark skin, must have been a familiar face to Z………….thats perhaps why she was drawn to him. Like Angie was saying, they want to make sure to balance their family so that all members feel a sense of belongingness when they look at each others faces.
I never thought of this before but perhaps, in adopting another child of colour, would they adopt another boy or a girl? i always felt it would be a girl, with a head of curly black hair like Z’s gonna be, given that she’s from East Africa where the ethnicity is different from West Africans.
And while i’m on the topic - i have a feeling that their next bio child will be a boy. Wouldnt that be just perfect. Then i feel they will probably stop pro-creating and also stop adopting because they will then have SIX KIDS. Why would they want more than that? i hope they stop after six kids.

Michael Winterbottom’s harrowing film about Danny Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and decapitated in Karachi in 2002, is a raw account about the frantic efforts to get him back. It nails the ghastly moment when journalists became prized scalps for terror organisations. Angelina Jolie plays Pearl’s pregnant wife, Mariane – on whose memoir the film is based – with a rigour and passion that surprised even the most jaded sceptics in Cannes.
The film begins on the day Danny (Dan Futterman) fails to turn up for supper. He is working on a story about the shoe bomber, Richard Reid, and has arranged a meeting with an organisation who have background knowledge. A missed supper becomes a crisis within 24 hours. The film charts the hollow weeks Danny is missing mostly through Mariane’s eyes. The house of a close colleague becomes headquarters during the desperate search for motives and information.
There is a confusion of investigators treading on each other toes, and contradictory information about who might have snatched Pearl. Leaks and rash speculation in the press add to the vertiginous panic. At times it’s difficult to know who exactly is in charge. A terrific cast of fixers and officials tease out clues from laptops, emails, and telephone numbers. An uneasy alliance is gradually forged between an American diplomatic security agent, Randall Bennett (Will Patton), various Wall Street Journal friends including the editor, John Bussey (Denis[correct] O’Hare), the head of the Pakistan’s brand new counter-terrorism unit, Captain (Irrfan Khan), the Citizens Police Liaison Committee, and the FBI.
At the still centre of this increasingly tense investigation is Jolie’s defiant Mariane. The film shuttles manically between meetings, endless telephone calls, the growing media frenzy, and the streets of Karachi with terrific confidence. What the kidnapping means to each character is etched on their faces. The power of this giant documentary-style jigsaw lies between the rumours, the false leads, and the hard details. Winterbottom captures brilliantly the chaos of daily life in Pakistan, and the febrile atmosphere as Pearl is first denounced as a CIA spy, and then – when his Jewish roots are fatally exposed – an agent for Mossad.
The director’s rapid-fire and choppy editing gives you a genuine feel for the many different sides of Karachi, and the urgency of the investigation. While Jamal and I were travelling round the US doing our interviews, we were reduced to tears on two occasions: once, when we were with Mariane, and then when Daniel’s parents, Judea and Ruth Pearl, spoke to us of their reaction after they had learnt not only of the murder of their son but the circumstances of his death.
Today, there was a moment when the tears returned after one scene — and it is a tour de force.
When Angelina Jolie learns that her husband was not coming back, she rushes into her bedroom, bangs the door shut and lets out scream after scream.
I don’t think that I was the only one among the 2,500 journalists whose blood turned cold. What Mariane must have felt when she relived that moment!
Back in 1994, I was probably the first journalist to report that a public school educated British youth, Omar Sheikh, then 21, had been picked up over a botched kidnapping just outside Delhi.
Now fast forward 13 years.In the most glamorous day so far this year at Cannes, Angelina and Brad Pitt appeared together at a news conference after the world premiere of A Mighty Heart, a film shot substantially in India over a five-week period. Alongside Angelina was Mariane Pearl, whom she plays in the film.
Among other cast members on the panel was Irrfan Khan, in a role that could not be more different than the soft-spoken Bengali professor in Mira Nair’s The Namesake.
This time, he is cast as the Captain, the head of the Karachi CID, who is gentle with Mariane and, in fact, builds a trusting relationship with her but thinks nothing of torturing a Pakistani suspect in his efforts to extract intelligence about the missing American reporter. By common consent, Irrfan is utterly convincing.
Also present today was Archie Panjabi, a British-Indian actress who plays Asra Nomani, whose family emigrated from India to the US and who, in time, became a colleague of Daniel on the Journal.
The film’s director, Michael Winterbottom, who enjoys a justly high reputation in his native Britain, sat between Mariane and Angelina.
Mariane, a woman of exceptional goodness, is a valued friend, as is Archie. Jamal gave whatever help he could during the shooting of A Mighty Heart and even had a cameo role in the movie. Omar, who has been sentenced to death for the kidnapping, is now in a prison in Pakistan though all the indications are that President Musharraf does not want to go ahead with the execution.Omar was one of three released by India in exchange for the passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane in 1999. A couple of years later, Omar, who was allowed to operate freely in Pakistan, had Daniel kidnapped and a week later the journalist was beheaded. His assassins added a touch of the macabre by videoing the act of decapitation and releasing it as a further act ofterror.
On balance, I would say that although the main protagonist, played wonderfully by Aly Khan, comes from a Pakistani fundamentalist background, the film avoids being anti-Pakistani. That is a considerable achievement. Nor is it anti-Islamic in any sense. However, Omar’s arrogance as a public school-educated boy shows through as well as his understated menace.
The notion that the kidnapping was an Indian plot done to embarrass Pakistan – the suggestion is put by a Pakistani minister – is examined and dismissed. So is speculation that Asra, because of her Indian origins, is an agent from India.
Some of the happier flashback scenes, when Mariane and Daniel, were enjoying the early days of their marriage in India – he had just been sent there by his paper as bureau chief for the region – were shot in India. Viewers will recognise the backdrop of the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Gateway of India as the couple take a little cruise in the Arabian Sea.
For the Karachi scenes in our documentary, Jamal went to Pakistan and shot the actual house in which the Pearls and Asra had stayed at the time of the kidnapping. Whoever did the location hunting for A Mighty Heart did marvellously well in finding a Pune residence which so closely resembles the Karachi property.
Another point I should make is that I know Mariane very well and whoever did make-up and styling has produced a startling lookalike. At today’s media conference, Mariane looked, well, like herself, but Angelina reverted to her own hairstyle and made sure she did not resemble the person whom she plays in the film.
The Daniel Pearl story is one of those tragedies that has left a scar on American consciousness. So, it is understandable that most of the questions today were from American journalists – several were “mother and making babies” type queries directed at Angelina.
One Indian journalist asked Angelina about the “security issues” that had dogged the shoot in India – a reference to the trouble caused by her bodyguards. She replied curtly that she had focused on the film because that had been the most important issue.
When I dealt with Mariane, I found she was always straight. Once she gave her word, she never went back. And, today, too, she was, as usual, refreshingly honest. How did Angelina get the role, she was asked. “I asked her to play it,” she said.
She had been reading a magazine and found she was moved by something Angelina had said. The two met and the role was Angelina’s. “‘Please do it,’” said Mariane. “‘You are the only person I know who can do it.’ I trusted her. She understood me. I am very fortunate she did it.”
Mariane was just over five months pregnant when her husband was taken. Angelina was about six months pregnant when serious discussions took place with Mariane.

I have a comedic side to me. Actually I am a comedian most of the time. In all seriousness, I must say that #270 article really hits home. I remember the entire story surrounding Mr. Pearl and I prayed for his safe return. I am in awe of his wife because I do not have the discipline not to hate if something like that would happen to my husband. Jared, for over 2 years many of us have found your site a place of true joy. Although I am very busy I have to say that I appreciate you hanging in there through it all-
The Story of Danie Pearl, in my opinion, is not about 9/11 or Terroism/ or hate. It is more about love than anything. The love that a man and woman have for each other that reaches beyond the grave and into the hearts and minds of others who never knew either of them. I appreciate Mariane for allowing this story to be told so that we can be stimulated to stop blaming and start doing.
Angelina and Brad separate and together appear to be deeply concerned humans who just want to do whatever they can to affect the world in a positive way-I don’t have to see the film to know that Angie’s acting is on the money-it always is-
Before they were together, I didn’t pay as close attention to certain issues as I do now-thanks-God Bless

That my friend is the million dollar question. Is it because they shot for the moon and seem to have hit it? Jealousy? That so much seeming perfection and happiness must be flawed? I look at the two of them and I see the best of what humanity has to offer. An honorable man, who, despite what some may wish to believe waited until his marriage was over to “move on”; a man who is not contented to get his and let the rest of the world get theirs. I see a man who recognizes that he won the lottery genetically and talent wise and wants to share with the world the blessings he has. I see an actor, not content to maintain a youthful facade and keep playing the “hero”; but one who has thought about his role, and decided to put his money where his mouth is and produce fine films. I see a woman, also genetically blessed, from an acting family, who inherited her parent’s talent. Not content to rest on her laurels or go shopping at the latest “in” store, but who wants to make a real difference in the world and has the money to do so. I see the woman a young lady has grown into. A young lady who told her truth whatever it was at the time. Maybe that’s it? Angie has just always been herself….and that self was not what the “minivan majority” (about as real as the moral majority imho) wanted in a heroine. Maybe someone so “real” shouldn’t “win the prince”….but isn’t that EXACTLY what alll the fairy tales said? Cinderella was most valued, despite her rags and soot!
I don’t think I ever saw Brad Pitt as in love as I’ve seen him lately (except, perhaps at his wedding-and I think that was more about the hope of family). Angie too - true love isn’t about bragging about “doing it” in the limo on the way over, or hanging onto the loved one so much that the hanger is more accessory than person. True love is getting up with the kids so your partner can sleep on a busy day; being extremely proud of the others’ accomplishment. (am I the only one who thought that Brad going “classic Hollywood” was a tribute to Angie and the film?)
I’m sure they have not so wonderful days, just like the rest of us, but we don’t see that, and maybe some people just can’t stand the comparison of Brad and Angie’s “perfect” life to their own. Brad AND Angie held the bar high, and each met the other’s - they didn’t just jump into bed on the first date; they knew each other for a year or more….

Woody Allen once said that all he cared about on the business side of making movies was for his films to make at least one dollar profit because then he knew he could make another one.
Some movies are precious little gems that live forever in their maker’s hearts. Some are made for profit and forgotten with the next project. I think first and formost “A Mighty Heart” is a labour of love. These types of films with their difficult subject matter rarely become box office successes. But I have a feeling Angie, Brad and Marrianne have already decided their film is a success and will be treasured for the rest of their lives. And I also have a feeling they will get their dollar back….. with interest.

Not going to watch the movie but rather will read the book. I have no high regard for Jolie and it would be too distracting to separate her falseness in reality than absorbed the inspiration and the lessons the story might have.
I hate Ann Curry!! Her voice is so fakely empathic. After every story airs she changes her voice into this awgul softess that makes you want to gag. Shut up!!! Keep with headline news so she can’t add her awful personality into the mix. She is just so terrible.
