Jolie, Pitt arrive at Cannes

CANNES — As low key as they could be, and as respectful as possible of why they were here, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie made their first appearance together yesterday at the 60th Cannes Film Festival.

“To be honest,” Jolie told a press conference, “we arrived here yesterday (Sunday) and had a beautiful day with our kids. We’ve all simply been playing with our children since the moment we landed. It’s a beautiful place and we have an opportunity to try to enjoy it with our families and speak about something we believe in. So it’s all good.”

As one of the world’s most famous, and most paparazzi-plagued couples, Pitt & Jolie showed up to support their film A Mighty Heart. As an out-of-competition screening in the official Cannes selection, it is a serious and searing drama about the 2002 kidnapping and murder of U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl. If it was up for prizes, Jolie might have won as best actress; she should be in the running for an Oscar nom.

“Truthfully,” Pitt said of the hordes of paparazzi following their every move at Cannes, “it doesn’t feel much different for us. The reason is we have cameras following us around every day. We’re really happy to be here with this project. We have great respect for this story and its place in the world.”

Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the victim’s then pregnant widow. Pitt, who originally bought the film rights to Pearl’s book about the tragedy when he was still married to Jennifer Aniston, serves as the producer of the film. He hired Michael Winterbottom to direct and approved Jolie to play the central role.

Jolie said yesterday she came to personally know Pearl through her book, then through meeting and befriending her in “playdates” involving their children. Mariane gave birth to Adam Pearl after her husband’s brutal beheading in Pakistan at the hands of Islamic terrorists. Pearl brought Adam with her to join Pitt and Jolie on the family outings in Cannes.

“I care very much about her and this story,” Jolie said, “and I believe very much in her voice.”

So far, the best compliment about the film, Jolie said, came from Pearl: “I was very, very nervous to get it right. The night before the first day of shooting, I had been nervous and I didn’t know if I could do it at all. But she felt it was done right and I can’t tell you how much that means to me.”

Jolie said that A Mighty Heart, which opens in North America in June, is the kind of film that resonates with an actor long after. But that does not mean she will stop doing action adventure romps like the Lara Croft flicks.

“I’m still capable of being silly and fun and just entertaining,” Jolie said. “I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to have that balance and do the wild, fun, action movies and also be allowed to do the dramatic movies. I’d always love to do both.”

But something like A Mighty Heart means more. “These are the ones that change the way we see the world.”

That passion wells up from the extraordinary resilience of Mariane Pearl, who sat beside Jolie at the press conference. Pearl declined to share her innermost emotions but explained her reasons for being involved.

“I decided to say yes to this movie for the same reason I wrote this book and for the same reason I do journalism,” Pearl said. That reason, she added, is simply to tell the truth about the complicated world we live in, including in the Middle East.

Pitt said it was a relief to bring A Mighty Heart to Cannes after the challenge of shooting on location in places such as India. “Someone described it as being a triumphant experience after all the hard work that goes in to making a movie. There is a real positive side to it.

“And I think that’s true especially on this film where everyone feels a tremendous responsibility. We’re very happy that the film maintains the dignity of Mariane and Danny themselves.

The boys spend the day at the Eden Roc Hotel hotel doing promo for Oceans and then went to the charity event later, angelina was at the Hotel du Cap doing promo for AMH. It was the time for the boys to shine, it wasn’t a brangelina event like yesterday,nothing wrong there.

Totally agree with this. I think it absolutely rocks that AJ kept to the villa - this is a secure woman, she doesn’t have to go to these things…AJ is so influential on that front it was better that this O13 event for charity be just that, not an ‘O13 & Angelina’ benefit which is what it would have been turned into had she been there. AJ is a lightening rod - she would have brought the gawking, and she and Pitt would have brought the gawking times 10. She shows what a generous actress and person she is, by letting the boys and Ellen Barkin have their night. Remember what Damon said about the papz lying in wait for her on the set of The Good Sheperd, he said when he eventually walked through it was like “the lions had all been fed,” that they barely noticed him and didn’t care who or what he did. He was being funny, and factual. She may be on the red carpet with Brad, but she also might just show up earlier/later and be there at the film and not do the red carpet. I go to the TO film fest and I know when big stars show up to see a film that they’re not in, they sometimes nix the red carpet because they don’t want to detract from the main stars being interviewed for their film - who are their to promote themselves and their movie. It’s a very gracious and generous thing to do, and the movie stars WITH CLASS act accordingly. This could go either way, as O13 is a fun film, and they just want to do BONZO box office, and any bit of publicity helps, although the boys have enough star power to generate that. AJ doesn’t have to be there, but if she was there, no one would complain, ya know?

For instance, Maniston though she was a producer of Troy at the time (which is soooo laughable, because you KNOW it was in name ONLY, as she didn’t do sh*t FOR that film — come on, she could barely make it to Morocco to visit Brad in 6 months let alone, scout out how the film was going and meet other cast people which is what a REAL producer DOES) in my opinion she should have kept her ass on the down low, particularly when there were other actresses there trying to get lauded, like Saffron Burrows, and Rose Byrne, Diane Kruger…as it was the press was all about Brad and his date (her), and her in that dumb third grade hair do and white gown….no one covered the other women that much. Angelina, I KNOW would not have done that. She’s a real professional ACTOR who respects other actors, male and female. Maniston probably didn’t want those girls getting ANY press time, jealous b*tch that she is. I bet she viewed that whole Cannes event as her way of telling Angelina, ‘hands off, b*tch’ — and you see how well that worked out for her don’t you?? Bahahaha, that is one silly inconsequential delusional b*tch crone. :-)

Angelina is probably with the children if she didn’t attend the Darfur charity event. Two nights in a row without mommy? The kids are probably saying, nothing doing mom.

I don’t get Ann Curry at all. She keeps asking Angelina idiotic questions. It seems like Ann is talking abut one thing and Angelina is responding to something else. There’s a disconnect there. Ann can’t seem to sit there with a normal face with a normal discussion. Instead she gets overly dramatic with her facial expressions with a look of deep concern on her face. Lady, lighten up. Angelina is an actress, she’s not Rudy Giuliani. This is one time where I think an interview of Angelina by Rosie O’ Donnell would be good, but she technically is not a journalist but another actress/comedian so it could get slanted. Whatever. I’m blase about the interview.. I know that Brad & Angelina love each other. I don’t need an interview to know that.

OT Ben Afleck and Matt Damon’s rise to fame came through their screenwriting. That’s what they got their Oscars for. The acting is extra. They both are good with good material. Ben was good in the recent Hollywoodland. Matt has always been an underrated actor.

I so agree about Anne Curry Frenchy, and wondered the other night just why AJ (and Brad) kept coming back to her style of reporting — her expressions are so bizarre — like you say, you’d think she was grilling Bush about pulling out of Iraq — I said I thought it must be because she is so easily well-handled by Angie — Ann come off as not too swift, and/or AJ just invariably makes mincemeat of her and finds her whole serious reporter demeanor hilarious, Brad too. They probably like her air of seriousness and see it as anti-fluff..though she’s still asking fluff questions, but she’s channeling Mike Wallace…which is what makes it so gd funny. :-) I also (in the excerpts I’ve read) object to her firing all these personal questions AJ’s way, and basically having a hand’s off approach to Brad - treating him as the all-business ‘Producer.’ Brad must have set some ground rules and wasn’t putting up with that sh*t, not on THIS movie anyway…while AJ, being the STAR of the film maybe says whatevs…these two are smart as whips, they’ve figured out that AJ is the lightening rod, Brad staying out of the fray actually increases the insanity and fame quotient.

I bet Jon Voight is dying to see AJ in this film, he’ll probably be at one of the premieres AJ doesn’t go to.

The washington post jumps at the chance to interview Angelina on AMH. Readers Digest has the Angelina interview to promote AMH. WSJ will probably also have a big piece on this movie - Daniel Pearl was an WSJ journalist.

Clever, clever press management in every sense of the word.

The minivan crowd that read STAR and AS* weakly aren’t gonna be watching AMH. It would be too cerebral for them. People who are gonna be watching AMH would be Angelina’s fans, and the types of people who do read the Washington Post, Readers Digest (10m subscribers, reaching the most readers earning more than US$100K in America and over 40 million readers world wide) and Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Newsweek, and so on.

And note how each interview adds to the total picture of how Brad and Angelina want to present themselves. Washington Post, Readers Digest, People Magazine, WSJ etc - all HIGHLY REGARDED publications, which CHECK THEIR FACTS and don’t generally indulge in FABRICATION - wholesale or not. Which makes what Brad and Angelina say, legitimate - you know?? Not this taken out of context “quotes”, if you can call it that.

Brad and Angelina may of course, still rue the day that they didn’t talk to AS* weakly (as Ol Meanie has implied), but somehow, I doubt it. Not so long as they have legitimate press jumping at the chance to talk to them.

Unlike other celebrities who feel a need to deny, refute whatever, Brad and Angelina know that to do so is to give power and credence to the fabrications and lies. Despite some people saying that Brad should somehow speak out about this or that to defend Angelina, it is now clear from Angelina’s interview with Ann Curry, that even if Brad wanted to, I highly doubt Angelina would want him to.

But just a few interviews in the LEGITIMATE PRESS, supported by the candid videos of them on the red carpet, all the CR*P is negated - unless you just want to be negative, in which case, nothing willchange your mind anyway.

Totally agree with you Lylian, and had to bump this! I think Min was kind of already backing off of them with her recent blasting of other rags that lie as bad as she does, lolol - but then her response about B&A as a couple, how they weren’t splitting, but that the fact that they seem “to good to be true,” contributes to the craziness. That’s all well and good as far as theories go Janice the Evil One, however - I didn’t see them ripping apart Maniston, or Paltrow, or Juliette Lewis when Brad was with them. I would think that same logic could have been used for ‘The Golden Couple,’ that oooooh, they’re just too good to be true, there must be something wrong - let’s write tabloid stories implying their toast or that there’s trouble! (…and actually if the rags had taken their approach to Brad & Maniston in a simlar fashion as Brad and Angie, they would have actually found verifiable and factual ‘fire’ where there was smoke, in their case: barely living together, Brad falling for Angie, Brad in therapy, Brad still bitter in the early days of his marriage about Paltry, etc.) They would have had a wealth of REAL negative information in which to form their tabloid bullsh*t, instead of the craziness they’re willing to attach to Brad & Angie based on NOTHING, which flies in the face of their verifiable BLISS. My conclusion, and I’ve said it before: They give the UGLY tv sit-com HACK a BREAK, and crucify the stunninglybeautiful younger Oscar winner It’s a simple explanation old as time. These tabloid b*tches, just like Oprah — very naturally take the side of the ugly underdog and the person they most identify with, in this case the rejected loser, maniston. Therefore, Angie, beautiful girl who has landed ‘the prize’ in their mind, must be punished and hit with both barrels. That’s all it is.

Now people are trying to bring Brad into HER quote, which is very manipulative and part of a bigger ulterior motive; see how Angie broke her promise…or see how Brad broke his promise to Angie…it’s so stupid and pointless — and yet, there’s nothing but silence when Brad was living apart from ‘The Man’ for 9 months??? just my opinion i think brad will take a year off also, the man would have made 3 films this year ,with 3 films to promote next year-he needs to bond with his children as much as angie does-also like someone upthread said his only starring roles are for burn while reading and state of play the other movies are movies that he may produce and not star in-whats the big deal if he does take a year off, its not the end of the world.

How could she say that pitt is a “really good producer” if “he also spent most of the time at the hotel with our three kids, being an even better father”? Good producers never leave the set.
