Angelina Jolie: ‘Today Show’ Interview

Angelina Jolie sits down with NBC News’ Anny Curry to discuss her new movie A Mighty Heart, having a fourth child and losing her mom, Marcheline Bertrand.

Said a tearful Jolie, “This has been a heavy year in losing my mom and having a fourth child. I’m very aware of time and of memories and of doing and enjoying life, not just doing the right thing and being a useful person, which I certainly want to be and believe I am. I want to be a great mom like my mom was. And I want to also do the things that I love. So I’m at a strange place in my life. That happens when you lose a parent, where you drop into a different kind of serious. Yet at the same time, you want to enjoy and laugh as much as possible everyday. But I’m holding onto my family really tight at this moment because of that and trying to be as good a woman as I can be in my life. Dammit. You got me crying. (Curry apologizes) That’s alright. It’s part of life. … I lost my mom. It’s a natural thing for a child to lose a parent. I lost my mom too young, but it happened. And I’m happy she’s out of pain, because I love her and she’s my friend.”

This was a great interview! I loved the way Angie kept bringing the interview back to the Pearls!

# 8

Anyone who has doubts about the Jolie-Pitts please watch and listen to her words. If you don’t believe her and how heartfelt and honest she is, I can’t help you. I wish the whole family well.

# 9

You will be a great mother Angelina!!! You are a beautiful family :)

No matter what anyone says, the woman is obviously intelligent, caring and articulate. Kudos for bringing attention to the murder of a talented journalist in a manner I expect is going to be sensitive and compelling.

Thanks JJ!

Can’t wait to see the rest of the interview tonight!

Just the snippet I saw this morning made me cry for Angie. So glad she has the children, Brad, and Jamie.

Bless the Jolie-Pitts….

Her smile is lovely and infectious!

Jared :)
Thanks for all that you are doing here!!

i like Ann Curry’s interview too.
i saw the other interview she did with Angie when they were at the field.
And like some people said, i feel she like Angie too and is very sincere with her.
And Angie as always is just straightforward and honest in how she live her life.
“very solid, very warm family.”
i just admired how focus she is with life with her family. :)

Thanks to everyone who has provided all the wonderful links to pictures and videos and especially to you, Jared. I haven’t even been able to keep up enough to post. This was a very touching interview with Angelina. I am loving all the wonderful reviews A Mighty Heart has received, too. This was a huge risk for them both personally and professionally to film this movie IMO, and they seem to have done a great job. Much congratulations to them.

Love Brangelina @ 05/23/2007 at 10:25 am

I love her :) That simple. I wish her nothing but the best as she continues her journey of Mom, actress, humanitarian, partner, sister, friend, woman and example.

Jared this is the first time I feel I want to slap you! you choose the worse screencap of angie! please change it.

OMG!! Have you seen the latest cover of the NATIONAL ENQUIRER???? They have the SAME false story that Randi from “Brad Pitt Watch” spread just to see what happen!! YEAH!! the National Enquirer STOLE this false rumor from that Randi from Brad Pitt Watch and the National Enquirer is even using the SAME picture that Randi use to spread the false rumor!! This shows how PATHETIC this tabloids really are!!!!

From Lainey @ 05/23/2007 at 10:27 am

And of course, the most elite of the elite, the Oceans crew and Angelina holding court at the du Cap. Details coming….

I just saw the video of the Ann Curry interview it was so good. I can’t imagine what it is like to lose a parent but I truly felt Angie’s grief. I loved how she wouldn’t allow a comparison of what happened to MP and the lost of her mother. Also the PAPS following her and them following MP during that very difficult time. I thought that showed great compassion on her part. I also have to say I loved how Ann got the point across that the media focus on all things Brad/Angie is way over the top. Ann said she doesn’t know how Angie does it, that people wanted to interview her just because she was interviewing Angie and a guy got caught trying to jump over the fence. It was a really great interview I look froward to seeing the rest on dateline tonight.

Angelina Jolie: It’s Been a Heavy Year

WEDNESDAY MAY 23, 2007 10:10 AM EDT

By Stephen M. Silverman

Angelina Jolie Photo by: Susan Walsh / APAngelina Says It’s Been ‘a Very Heavy Year’ | Angelina Jolie
The past months have offered tragedy and joy for Angelina Jolie.

“This has been a very heavy year, in losing my mom and having a fourth child,” the actress, 31, told Ann Curry in a Today show interview that aired Wednesday.

(Click here to watch a clip. The interview will continue Wednesday night on Dateline NBC.)

“I suppose I’m very aware of time and of memories and enjoying life,” Jolie continued, “not just doing the right thing and being a useful person – which I certainly want to be, and believe that I am.”

Recalling her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who died in January at age 56 after a nearly 8-year battle with cancer, Jolie said: “I want to be a great mom like my mom was. And I also want to do things that I love.”

On Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival, where she and Brad Pitt premiered their new movie, A Mighty Heart, Jolie told reporters she plans to take a year off from acting to spend time with her family: Pitt, 43, and kids Maddox, 5; Pax, 3; Zahara, 2; and Shiloh, who turns 1 on May 27.

(Jolie adopted Pax in March from Vietnam, and recently added a fourth line to the tattoo on her left arm that features coordinates for the birthplaces of all her children.)

“I’m in a strange, I suppose, place in my life,” Jolie told Curry. “I think that happens when you lose a parent, where you drop into a different kind of serious. And yet, at the same time, you want to laugh and enjoy as much as possible every day.”

To that end, she said, “I’m hanging on to my family really tight at this moment, and, because of that, trying to be as good a woman as I can be in my life.” At that point, Jolie broke down in tears. “Dammit,” she said, “you got me crying.”

Curry apologized, but Jolie, regaining her composure, said, “That’s alright. It’s part of life. … I lost my mom. It’s a natural thing for a child to lose a parent. I lost my mom too young, but it happened. And I’m happy she’s out of pain, because I love her and she’s my friend.”

Alexanderina @ 05/23/2007 at 10:29 am

Thanks Jared for the new thread. I loved it. It was a great interview, and emotional. I cried. She is indeed an incredible and amazing woman. I love her. I can’t wait to see the rest of the interview.

lizzy13132003 @ 05/23/2007 at 10:31 am

I have to say I found Ann Curry annoying and unprofessional.
Angelina was there to talk about “A Mighty Heart” and all the time Curry tried to steer the interview to talking about Brad and Angie by trying to suck up to her.To me it seemed she didn’t even care aboout the film or the Pearls she just wanted some candy details about Brad, Angelina and the kids! That is in my mind very unprofesional and disrespectful towards the crew, the film itself and the Pearls! But I loved Angelina’s way of dealing with it even thoough in my mind one could see she didn’t like where Curry tried to go and that she had to always force the conversation to the actual topic.

Ace Tomato @ 05/23/2007 at 10:32 am

Wow. I haven’t been through losing a parent yet in my life. Very sad.

I’m sure that Brad Pitt gave him a huge hug as soon as she finished the interview. It’s broke his heart to see her cry.

oh please
this was soooooooo fake and boring!!!!!!
she’s stupid and ridiculous

I think Ann knows what she can talk about to Angelina and Angelina and Brad always go back to her, so I think they trust her. She’s not annoying or unprofessional to me. Ann is their hand picked interviewer and they obviously like something about her. She does go into other subjects, but people also want to know about her private life.

I hope when you lose a parent people will be a little bit more compassionate to you then you are to a person who has recently lost her mother.

soothsayer @ 05/23/2007 at 10:47 am

Angelina Jolie is going to have a VERY blessed life from here on out because her energy is good. When she adopted Maddox, her energy changed from negative to positive. She is constantly sowing good seeds into the earth and that’s why she has attracted Brad Pitt and her wonderful children into her life. You reap what you sow. That is the truth in life for everybody. It’s really true.

not a surprise @ 05/23/2007 at 10:47 am

Love the interview. I am glad Ann Curry and not Diane Sawyer who did the interview. Can’t stand Sawyers interview. Also I hope Meredith V will not get any interview from Angie. She is on the same boat with Diane, Baba W and Elizabeth on the View.

I know how Angie feels about losing her mother. I lost mine almost ten years ago and I am still grieving. The interview made me cry, but loved Angie’s response to the questions about the paps.

This endless (mostly false) speculation over everything Jolie-Pitt is so sickening to me! I cant imagine what it’s like for that family. Good thing they say they don’t read tabloids. I’m in PR, and if I was their publicist I would be getting a coronary. The thing is u can’t win..even though AJ has always been vocal about herself the tabs twist her words or say she’s lying. When she keeps quiet they say she’s hiding something…aarghh!!

Ok I saw this morning’s interview and there was Ann Curry again with the over dramatic facial expressions, arms out, etc….Way to go in scaring Angelina and bringing her to tears. If she has stayed on topic, A Mighty Heart, there would not be people trying to get an interview with her becasue she got an interview of Angelina. This is such a serious film may I ask something to the fans out there? who in television news would be able to get the best interview of Angelina & Brad right now? After scouring th usual places my only conclusion was CHARLIE ROSE. Yes it seems like yesterday that Angelina was on with The Good Shepherd and he seems to talk way too much but he won’t go on and on about trivial matters. What do you guys think?

charlie rose is my favorite interviewer also-he always does a great job with angie

39, I doubt they would be seperate on shilohs first B~day. Hello!

I don’t like how Ann Curry did the interview.

that when she got most of her fans, not now idiot.

Don’t bother going to the NE site, I’ll give you the breakdown so you won’t give them the hits.

It’s not a cover per se for Brad & Ange, it’s just a bar at the top, the cover is taken over by your friend and mine (NOT!!), Rachel Ray — and it blares, ‘Rachel ray caught in bed with another man! She is sharing a side bar with ‘Dr Phil at war with Oprah over 75 million,’ and ‘Britney Hooks up With Ryan Phillipe’ in the lower right hand corner — when I saw the Brangie headline, I almost thought I was looking at an old cached page of an old NE headline, you will laugh — the BButton small-time actress known in the tabloids as the ’stunning red head’ who actually is NOT, as I pulled her pic off of imdb to show everyone that one time remember? Makes an appearance again, using the same tired still pic from the BB movie where Mr. Button (Brad) is kissing her in the street - they have a bar at the top, featuring AJ, and it reads ‘Angelina’s Furious Over Brad’s Kiss with this Woman,’ then on the pic of the movie still, all PEREZ style, they have drawn an arrow pointing to the woman and written, ‘This is not angelina!’ LOLOL Er, NO it isn’t numbnuts, because AJ is NOT in the MOVIE. LOL

Nevermind that BButton and that scene was shot well over 3 months ago at least, and that two other tabloids have already written the same lame ‘AJ is jealous’ of the kiss story. NE is lame.

By the way, Farrah Fawcett is poised to sue their pants off over their ‘Farrah Prays for Death as Cancer Returns’ cover, let’s hope she’s successful. Any outfit that needelessly inflicts that kind of pain on people battling illness deserves to get hit in a major way.

Funny thing @ 05/23/2007 at 11:13 am

The Enquirer is really going after Brad now, last week was the drugs thing and now the cheating.

I was looking at all the recent pictures of Brad, and damn, that man is tall! He’s towers over everybody and usually I don’t really get the impression that he’s this really large guy but he’s even taller than George Clooney. Angie did good with finding herself a man with some girth.

Great interview!
Sometimes I forget why I like her so much but then I see an interview like this and I instantly know why and like her even more! :)

Yes Frenchy, I’d love for Angie and Michael Winterbottom, and possibly Brad as well to do Charlie Rose. That would be fantastic.

oh looky who’s here to rip Angelina apart… AGAIN! hmmmm is always so negative. I know some loons cant stand the fact that Angelina is not the same as she was YEARS ago, but damn can’t they just get over it. They are ALWAYS trying so hard to convince us that Angie is not worthy of having fans. too bad.

What a touching and introspective interview! To say Angelina is beautiful is rather factitious… Her loveliness seems to transcend all media… Live, be and always give & share your good heart Angelina… You are the embodiment of beauty & grace… In the words of Shakespear: you’re the sonnet 18

Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day?

by William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Thank you Ann for a perspicacious interview!!! You conducted it with fairness, respect & compassion..

Yes, thank you. What’s with people dropping source-less info. I can’t stand that. At least say where it may have come from so we can decide whether or not it’s legit enough to be believed. Oh my, I’m also embarrassed for you. Your teachers should be ashamed of themselves for passing you above the third grade. It is far easier to get your point across when you aren’t totally illiterate. This is probably the reason you don’t “get” AJ–you are too uneducated to understand where she is coming from. Too dense to understand people change and she has changed into a very warm, caring compassionate woman. If I were you, I’d go back to school and learn how to spell and use grammar properly!

Frenchy, I do like Charlie Rose but agree with you he talks too much, but then they all do. The worst annoyance so far has been Billy Bush and the female, dark-haired co-whatever at Cannes. For some reason they thought we wanted to see footage of them instead of any relevant celebrities. Why on earth would we care about seeing them, the dress she was wearing, etc.? Waste of time!

Funny thing, #55…There is no “thing” to cover with Brad that has anything to do with cheating or drugs. If anyone is writing about such garbage they are not “covering” it, they are fabricating it…

Say what you will about people who don’t bow down to her presence. It just sounds hypocritical.
It’s not that most people dislike her that much, it’s more the way people she doesn’t know/care about and would use as a **** ticket worship her.

that’s a first brad and angie are not on the cover of life and style. How sad they are trying to look more credible by putting tyra on the front talking about weight and body issues. US weekly have done the same thing only with janet jackson.

Angelina did make an appearance at the bar. Serene and secured – that wicked bodyguard pacing incessantly making sure none of the super rich people were about to attack her and preventing trespassers from getting too close. Sorry to disappoint the haters but away from the cameras, I’m told she and Brad are – and I quote – “ridiculously in love”. To the point where they will find each other’s eyes in a crowded room and send over a secret smile. Trust me…I just heaved a little too.

SWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

i saw excerpts of her interview on Today’s Show with Ann Curry. Angelina has become a very thoughtful, selfless, profound woman.. very intriguing and awe inspiring. and very much in love with Brad. They will most definitely grow old together. I think they will truly become one of longest relationships Hollywood has ever witness.

INTERVIEW-Jolie kids keep her grounded, help with tough role

By Mike Collett-White

CANNES, France, May 23 (Reuters) - It is children that keep Angelina Jolie’s feet firmly on the ground while the paparazzi chase her every move, and motherhood helped the star prepare for her role as the pregnant wife of slain reporter Daniel Pearl.

The 31-year-old, who with her partner Brad Pitt is known in Hollywood as super-couple “Brangelina”, plays Mariane Pearl, wife of the Wall Street Journal journalist who was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002.

Mariane, who wrote a book about her experiences, was around six months pregnant at the time, and Jolie filmed “A Mighty Heart” not long after she gave birth to daughter Shiloh.

Jolie and Pitt, 43, also have three adopted children, from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

“My children help me keep perspective,” Jolie told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday just outside Cannes, where the movie had its world premiere.

“The world forms opinions and has a view and does tabloid things and fortunately none of that is inside my home,” she said at the exclusive Du Cap hotel. “I (am) focused on getting the kids to school, I’m focused on the balance of all the children.”

Critics have praised Jolie for her portrayal of a woman who desperately seeks her husband through phone and e-mail trails and in the teeming city of Karachi, a hotbed of militancy just after the 9/11 attacks.

MEMORIES OF NAMIBIA

Jolie was in Namibia when discussing the script with Mariane and British director Michael Winterbottom as she prepared to give birth to Shiloh.

“We were all in Namibia and I was six months pregnant, and I remember seeing Mariane and talking to her about being pregnant.

“At the same time I would go home, sit and lay next to Brad, and he would put his hand on my stomach and we would talk about the hospital and the baby and were so excited together.

“To know that’s what they took away from her at that time infuriated me, it made me so, so upset.”

She added that Mariane had no time for letting her “emotions run wild”, but added: “But thank God she was pregnant, because she has Danny in (their son) Adam … he is Adam.”

Jolie said “A Mighty Heart”, which Pitt co-produced, did not signal a shift away from comic or action roles for which she is best known, even though she won an Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted” set in a mental institution.

“I think people think that now I’m just trying to be serious and do very serious films.

“But the reality is I’m playing an assassin now in a movie and my little boys think it’s really cool and I’m going to do a cartoon next where I’m a tiger and … that’s why I get kudos in my house.”

The star of box office hits like “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, in which she played alongside Pitt, Jolie said she had been gripped by Mariane’s tragedy when it played out before the media.

The film still had relevance today, however, by preaching a message of tolerance.

“This woman, who has the greatest reason to be just blinded by hate, is speaking up very strongly and saying we have got to have a dialogue, we have got to continue to find ways to relate to each other and not just focus on differences.”

Jolie said she would continue to take time off in between filming to be with her family, and that she and Pitt took turns to act in movies. (Please visit our Cannes site, including a link to our blogs, on http://uk.reuters.com/news/globalcoverage/cannesFestival)

Yes! I saw it. Just goes to show you tabloids are total trash. Man Brad Pitt watch annoys the **** out of me though. What kind of fan is that? Horrible horrible website.

++++++++++++

What’s totally retarded is that STAR had the same story 3 months ago when Brad was filming CCOBB in NO! So, once again…the NE has nothing new to report. Just recycling used sh#t from Star…again. The NE hasn’t had a B/A story in 2 weeks, so they had to come up with sumpin’!

Love Brangelina @ 05/23/2007 at 11:48 am

Jolie, though, sometimes had a harder time staying inside. Winterbottom’s inimitable shooting style is a little like the taping of a reality show: He uses handheld cameras and no studio lighting, encourages as much improvisation as the story line allows, and then simply follows his actors around wherever they go. ”The crew would have to find places to hide — behind curtains or in the bathroom — to stay out of the shots,” Jolie says of the process. ”The great thing about it is if you felt like going somewhere else while doing a scene, you could. But it could get intense. Michael and I would have disagreements over wherehe could follow me. We came up with a system. If I closed the door, he couldn’t follow. If I left it open, he could. I just needed to know that if things got too heavy, there’d be a place for me to cry by myself.”

That, by the way, was not something Jolie worried about on the set of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Or on Mr. & Mrs. Smith. And it’s one of the things that make A Mighty Heart so potentially interesting. Since winning her Oscar, Jolie’s onscreen persona has been transformed by a series of tentpole action roles, and her offscreen footprint has grown so huge (something to do with that boyfriend of hers) it threatens to eclipse all else in her life and career. But with A Mighty Heart, the actress has the chance to show why she got that little golden guy in the first place. She can remind people of something her new supersize celebrity status almost makes them forget.

That she can actually act.

OMG sorry about my caps lock … i feel better now that i was able to make that idiot to bark like a dog.. BRAD and ANGELINA i’m loving them… Good day to everyone specially to my fellow Brangelina fans… Angie is one very smart and sassy lady..Brad is so exotic looking guy..and funny… i bet Angie loves him so much for that…looks like Brad is always making Angelina laugh.

Why do you care? Do you show up at Trekkie, Star Wars, or Rocky Horror conventions and ridicule their fans? How about Beatlemania events or at Graceland on Elvis’ birthday every year? Or let’s see how about James Dean’s or Jim Morrison’s grave sites like thousands do every year? I could go on, but I think, actually I hope, that you get my point. Its called being a fan. You either get it or you don’t. Yeah fans tend to wax romantic about everything the person they like does or did, but it comes with the territory. So if you’re thinking of sticking around here then you might as well get used to it.

Mrs. Smith @ 05/23/2007 at 11:58 am

I’m still riding that wave of euphoria from those stunning photos from Cannes of the Royal Couple - Brad and Angie. The reviews for AMH are so wonderful and must be so rewarding for them, having worked on this project so close to their hearts.

I cried for Angie’s heartache as she talked of her mom, with such love. I love her more and more to see her strength in the face of such a great loss.

Thanks for the link to that sexy picture of Brad holding his lady’s hips…..ooooooh…la…..la…..

And Jared, you are surpassing all my expectations when it comes to keeping us up with all the latest from Cannes about ‘what’s her name’ and ‘what’s his name.’

bored You think Hugh is exotic looking? I like my Men straight.
Hugh is known to have a male lover, even though He is Married.

I agree she does seem like an intelligent empathetic woman. That is why she is the paparazzi magnet she’s become. She doesn’t appear to be a tramp just out to take a man away from his wife and family, yet she did just that. She repeatedly claimed she knew how her mother felt when she was cheated on by her father and she could never be ‘that’ woman. Yet she was clearly pregnant before the divorce was finalized. I think the world is trying desperately to figure her out, do we love her or hate her?! She seems to want to grab hold of all the things in her life that others hold dear because she doesn’t have that in herself. She adores the children she adopts because they need her and she feels superior to other moms. Not only is she attempting to be a supermom but she’s doing it with refugees unlike us average mom who birth our children naturally. Nothing shows this more than the constant photos of her with her adopted children (I’d bet there isn’t a photo of her without that baby carrier & little Z in the first year she had her) yet not one single shot of Shiloh in the same comforting hold? Her actions seem to contradict her interviews completely!

Thanks JJ for the 2 new threads. Geez, I go to sleep for 8 hours and you pull up 2 new threads?…do you ever sleep JJ? LOL. You are THE man!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, they have both interview ( OC13 and AMH) at the same time) so I pick OC13, because I knew that MSNBC always put the interview on their website right away. Sure enough they did. I laughed at the OC13’s boys interview, but I love Angelina’s responses at the interview, I cried. Ok, now what is up with Ann Curry facial expression?…she make me feel like she needs to go to the bathroom or something. LOL.

Antibes is like a sea of people, very crowded. It’s becoming like Cannes nowadays. I was even not able to find a parking it. My daughter got fed up in the car, we came back home.

I am going to try tomorrow to go to Antibes.

Good day/evening to all from France.

Huuummm or VH1 or ….. do you want me expose your very known nickname? Do you really want this? Don’t stalk me and stupidly and desperately TRY to pick on me. Because there are the “true” fans here and know of me well. At the end, I surely don’t have to prove my fanship of the Jolie-Pitts to you. I have not written anything insulting or aggressive about any member of the Jolie-Pitts, I shall never do. I do like, love, respect, admire the Jolie-Pitts deeply.

There are unfortunately some people here who consider themselves as fans but their behaviour towards others is just so annoying. I am not aggressive and obsessive like them. And these people are very well known by all of us. You can ever NOT question my fanship because you don’t have a right to do so.

Read my comments over and over again until you get it well because all I undertood by your message, you have not read them well.

Take your rear and get lost! This is the very last time I am writing something refering to you.

I am going to try tomorrow to go to Antibes.

Good day/evening to all from France.

Yo Penny,

US Weekly: We felt bad for Jennifer Aniston when we read Angelina Jolie’s revelation, in this month’s Reader’s Digest. Jolie admitted she and Brad Pitt started trying for a biological child in summer or fall 2005, well before Pitt was divorced from Aniston.

Then we learned that, when the news broke, Aniston was lounging about at a Cabo San Lucas resort where rooms can cost more than $5,000. Now we actually don’t feel that bad for Jen at all (”Did the News Shake Jen?” Page 51).

INTERVIEW-Jolie kids keep her grounded, help with tough role

23 May 2007 14:48:52 GMT

Source: Reuters

(Please visit our Cannes site, including a link to our blogs, on )

Beautiful:

Angelina Jolie Fails to Lift Tepid Film of Daniel Pearl’s Widow

By Farah Nayeri

May 22 (Bloomberg) — On a January morning in Karachi, reporter Daniel Pearl set off to do one last interview before leaving Pakistan. He was never seen again.

The story of that interview manque, and of the Wall Street Journal correspondent’s 2002 abduction and decapitation, is now a motion picture, produced by Brad Pitt, directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Angelina Jolie as Pearl’s pregnant widow Mariane.

“A Mighty Heart” is drawn from Mariane’s delicately crafted 2003 memoir. The book toggles subtly between the kidnapping and the happy times before it. The movie is more or less a straight chronology of the days preceding Pearl’s death. Subtlety is scarce, characters are two-dimensional.

“We tried to just shoot the film very simply,” said Winterbottom at a crowded press conference during the Cannes Film Festival, where the movie was presented out of competition. Seated beside him were Jolie in a faded brown blouse, her partner Pitt in a steel-gray suit, and Mariane, their close friend.

It all started three years ago when Pitt approached Mariane about adapting the book. “I didn’t think it was appropriate,” recalled the young widow, alternating between English and her native French. “I took a year to accept to meet people from the studios.”

When she did, Pearl asked Jolie to take the role. The two had bonded after Pearl read an endearing magazine interview of the actress. “I said, please do it. You’re the only one.”

Jolie recalled her extreme stress before the shoot. “For her to tell me that she felt it was done right — I can’t tell you how much that means to me,” she said.

`One Last Interview’

In fact, Jolie’s acting is merely adequate. Tanned and curly haired for the occasion, the Hollywood icon paces up and down the Karachi house with hands on hips and a knitted brow. Occasionally, she yells at the ineffectual swarm of diplomats and intelligence personnel. Her imitation of Pearl’s accented English is phony and distracting.

The action gets going in no time. Opening scenes show Pearl telling his wife that he just needs “one last interview” before they leave for Dubai the next day. There are glimpses of closeness — Pearl kissing his wife’s belly, ringing her at the grocery store — before the bleak countdown begins.

When the reporter goes missing, his wife is shown in successive stages of disarray, making frantic calls and scouring Daniel’s emails together with her friend, housemate, and fellow reporter Asra Nomani. They are visited by an assortment of officials who turn their lounge into a situation room, complete with white-board charts linking names to the kidnapping.

Body at the Morgue

For the film’s first half, the viewer feels strangely detached; the directing is coarse, and the acting sub-par. At mid-film, a body is found at the morgue. Though it turns out not to be Pearl’s, the heartbeat quickens, and the movie improves.

Winterbottom is most effective at the end, when a video is dropped off in a brown envelope. Incredulous Mariane is told of her husband’s death; she shuts her bedroom door and howls in agony. Jolie’s acting, too, gets a last-minute lift.

What baffles is that Winterbottom appears only timidly to condemn those behind the crime. Juxtaposed clips of the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay — where terrorism suspects are held in dire conditions — come across as attempts to explain away the hatred that caused Pearl’s death.

“Guantanamo had just started at exactly the same time, and in a way, they are aspects of the same thing,” Winterbottom said at the press conference, referring also to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. “They’re both, in a way, the aftermath of 9/11, and the response to 9/11.”

Caught in the Conflict

Winterbottom recalled his previous film “The Road to Guantanamo” (2006), which portrayed three British Muslims held in Guantanamo for two years and released without charge. “They were, in a sense, caught up in the conflict in the same way that Danny and Mariane were,” he said.

Pitt said the important thing was “understanding the other side, viewing the other side, instead of immediately jumping to demonization or some kind of simplification, because things are complex.”

If only Winterbottom had been more adept at capturing that complexity.

Brad & Angelina Party In Cannes!
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie joined producer Jerry Weintraub on his yacht, the RM Elegant, on Tuesday, May 22 as they, and the rest of the Ocean’s 13″ cast, partied the night away in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea!

The event signaled the launch of Brad’s new charity organization, Not On Our Watch. Supporters and attendees on the yacht included Matt Damon, George Clooney, Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin and Bernie Mac.

The event raised the bar for party crashers in Cannes who were determined to get into the intimate yacht party. A row of speedboats armed with gunmen surrounded the yacht in the middle of the sea and turned away any approaching boat once the party was sealed off at 9:30 pm.

“It looked like a dog fight between speed boats. Photographers were zooming around trying to get any shot they could of the boat but security was just too tight,” said a photographer in the middle of the sea.

The guests continued to be on the boat until midnight but the Ocean’s 13 gang was not ready to stop partying!

Brad, Angelina, George and Matt all hopped onto a speed boat and zoomed across the sea to the Hotel du Cap.

Brad and Angelina took a quick stop into a big party being hosted by Naomi Campbell at the Hotel’s restaurant but chose not to mingle with guests. Instead they went up to the hotel’s smaller lobby bar to have a drink.

Angelina and Brad both drank red wine as they stood at the bar and whispered into each other’s ears. After a couple of glasses, Brad and Angelina started to get very chatty with some guests and a full fledged party broke out!

“Matt and George stumbled up from the party and the sexy factor jumped up a notch at the bar,” says a fellow drinker. “Angelina and Brad got caught up in the moment and just started kissing each other out of control.”

The private party continued with another bottle of red wine and Brad and Angelina continued to laugh the night away.

At 2 am the pair decided to call it a night and they walked arm in arm to their security boat which took them home to their yacht.

Peter Bradshaw reviews the latest films

Tuesday May 22, 2007
The Guardian

The ferociously prolific British director Michael Winterbottom has come to Cannes with his latest picture, A Mighty Heart, showing out of competition. It stars Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl, wife of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter abducted in Karachi in 2002 by Islamic militants, and grotesquely beheaded on video after much anguished and futile waiting inflicted on Pearl’s family.
Winterbottom handles everything with tremendous energy and sweep: the locations; the teeming streets; the tense cops; the frantic mobile-phone conversations; the false alarms; the real alarms; the desperate excavation of IP addresses from mysterious email contacts. Yet the focus is the essentially passive and inactive figure of Mariane, heavily pregnant, who can do nothing but sit tight and stay strong. I can’t help thinking a bolder type of movie might have made Daniel the centre of the action, and stayed with him, in real time as it were, until his horrifying execution - in the manner of Paul Greengrass’s United 93. Michael Winterbottom evidently wanted something different: a human-interest study of Mariane, left alone to deal with the unthinkable horror of widowhood. Jolie gives an intelligent and restrained performance, but with her frizzy hairdo, dark-brown contact lenses and French accent, she is encumbered with surface detail and we never get inside her head or her heart. The picture touches only briefly and very cautiously on the issue of whether Pearl’s paper, the Wall Street Journal, should have cooperated with the CIA, and so exposed their reporter to whispers of spying.

Article continues

——————————————————————————–

——————————————————————————–

Compared to In This World or The Road to Guantánamo, this story of Mariane Pearl is strangely underpowered, telling us at greatlength things that we know already. I wondered if the director’s heart was entirely in it.
Every Cannes has its shocker, its scandal, apparently designed to give one and all a fit of the vapours. Ulrich Seidl’s Import Export came close to the prize. It is a provocative dual-narrative study of a Ukrainian nurse and an Austrian security guard finding work in each other’s countries. Seidl’s eye for the grotesque makes him the Diane Arbus of world cinema, and this was often startling, horrible and brilliant. But it was topped by something with the innocuous-sounding title of Zoo, by American indie director Robinson Devor, showing in the Director’s Fortnight section. This is no trip to Whipsnade we’re talking about. “Zoo” means zoophile, and Devor’s fascinating, almost dreamily stylised drama-documentary is about a covert group of zoophiles who made contact via the web, congregated in Seattle - where bestiality used to be legal - and then became publicly notorious when one died of a perforated colon after being penetrated by a horse.

Incredible as it sounds, Zoo actually avoids sensationalism and prurience, approaching the subject so obliquely and non-judgmentally that someone coming to this film with no idea of its subject matter might be baffled for much of the time. It shows only fleeting, graphic images at the very end. With testimony from the other “zoos” heard in voiceover, and an insistent musical score, Devor creates a weird and transgressive mood; the American landscape itself looks unearthly, unreal, the creation of a secret society. It is the sort of America that Don DeLillo writes about.

The film itself was rather coolly received at its premiere. As the cast and crew rose to take their bows at the end, the applause was muted, with a little booing. One man yelled: “Et maintenant … les chevaux!” He got the biggest laugh I have heard at the festival so far.

Ok #186…that’s just one bad review…where is the MANY from Cannes that you claim? I have saw well over a dozen reviews from EW, Premiere and other variable papers/movie critics that love the film and loved her performance, even going as far as to say that it’s Oscar worthy but nevermind….I know what you are trying to do but it won’t work.

186 What do you mean this is one of many bad reviews i’ve only seen that one and i saw that one last night. I can’t find any others and if there are some more the majority reviews of the film are positive.

I absoluty LOVE haters that spend their sweet day googling angelina’s name and posting the most negative articles about her. I don’t like Justin Timberlake but I don’t spend my whole day searching and posting bad articled about him. I wonder if I’m a weird person for that?

BTW we saw the video of them getting a standing O when they entered the theatre and at the end they both Hugged marriane and everyone was standing and clapping. Goodness people just can’t handle the idea of Angelina getting good reviews for her movie.

The film “A Mighty Heart” received booing at the end of it’s premiere.

***

you are reading what you are posting, right? the “boo” was reserved for another movie, it was for ‘Import Export” by Ulrich Seidl. Bradshaw reviews two movies in the piece you posted.

I do not mind a movie receiving a bad review. Many of my favorite movies are “boring” by HW standards, who can sit through Passolini’s dark cinema? But please, keep your objectivity above your agenda.

Oh, here is what BBC’s Cannes person is saying about AMH:

“It’s the films, stupid!

The celebrity hoopla and showbiz parties can be powerful distractions in Cannes, but the best thing about the festival by a red carpet mile is the wonderful movies.

Cinema-going is a hit and miss affair at the best of times, and these sequel and remake-laden days are definitely not those.

But festival organisers trawl hundreds of movies each year, hand-picking the finest for cinema’s greatest showpiece.

My stint in Cannes is now at an end. The festival has been chaotic, crowded, noisy, often vulgar and completely exhausting - and I have loved it.

My best film: A Mighty Heart. It was handsomely made, impeccably acted, surprisingly suspenseful and desperately moving. ”

Anyway, on last night’s ET, they showed a snippet of the interview with Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon and George Clooney. At one point, they mentioned how George was the only one without children (he jokingly called the other three men deserters).

George: Brad has had it rough.
Matt: Yeah
George: He’s hobbled with children.
Matt: Yeah…and that wife!
George: Yeah, that…ugly wife!

I’m sure I missed a word or two, but that’s basically what they said. (And yes, they were joking around.) I thought it was hilarious…and the fact that they call Angelina Brad’s wife…well, it tells you a lot.

The film “A Mighty Heart” received booing at the end of it’s premiere.

Oh, my God. A hater cut-and-pasted something out of a negative movie review and added it onto an AMH review. Now this thing will spread like wildfire and will be taken as gospel by the haters.

Now I see how these crazy rumors get started.

To the poster who posted a review with this part Quote:

“The film itself was rather coolly received at its premiere. As the cast and crew rose to take their bows at the end, the applause was muted, with a little booing. One man yelled: “Et maintenant … les chevaux!” He got the biggest laugh I have heard at the festival so far. ”

Comment:

If I am not mistaken this part refers to the Film “ZOO”, and NOT AMH (the part ‘cheveaux’ refers to the colon-perforating scene I guess?).

Angelina Jolie Panned by Critic: ‘A Mighty Heart’ Performance Detached

By Heather Parker
May 22, 2007

Angelina Jolie was lauded by two of the first reviews of ‘A Mighty Heart.’ It looked as if it might be time to already award Jolie her second Academy Award. But another review has emerged and it calls Jolie’s performance ‘merely adequate.’ The fear for this film for many is that it will try to only tell half the story. Abby Wisse Schachter, writing on “No Pitt Pearl of Wisdom,” Tuesday in National Review _ noted this very concern.

Angelina Jolie Panned by Critic: ‘A Mighty Heart’ Performance Detached

She writes: Angelina is going to play Marianne, while Brad is making insulting proclamations about how important the film is going to be. To wit, Pitt characterized the goal of the film thusly: ‘We hope the film can increase understanding between people of all faiths and portray the story and the people involved as honestly as possible without anger or judgment.’

***

Daniel Pearl was brutally beheaded on film by fundamentalists. Farah Nayeri of Bloomberg notes that in his review. What baffles is that director Michael Winterbottom appears only timidly to condemn those behind the crime. Juxtaposed clips of the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay — where terrorism suspects are held in dire conditions — come across as attempts to explain away the hatred that caused Pearl’s death.

He adds: “Jolie’s acting is merely adequate. Tanned and curly haired for the occasion, the Hollywood icon paces up and down the Karachi house with hands on hips and a knitted brow. Occasionally, she yells at the ineffectual swarm of diplomats and intelligence personnel. Her imitation of Pearl’s accented English is phony and distracting.”

One can only hope this film does Daniel Pearl justice, I now have my concerns.

*sigh* isn’t it amazing how much adam looks like danny pearl? it’s like they stamped his face on him. beautiful..

Thanks curly for that BBC review just another one to add on the MANY positive ones-so this troll is cutting and pasting to manufacture a bad review, with friends like these no wonder maniston doesn’t have a film career-lol

Let’s see how many positive reviews are here.

From FoxNews(!):

A Mighty Heart,” Angelina Jolie’s film about the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, had its first screening Monday morning at the Cannes Film Festival.

Simply put, the Michael Winterbottom film is an exceptional piece of work, deeply affecting and filmmaking of the highest order.

In purely Hollywood terms, the film is a certain Oscar nominee. Everyone involved in “A Mighty Heart” — from Winterbottom to Jolie as Pearl’s widow, Mariane, to Dan Futterman as Daniel Pearl — can be proud of a job very well done.

Based on the book by Mariane Pearl, the film follows the pregnant Mariane as searches for her husband following his disappearance in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2002. At the time, Daniel Pearl was writing a story about shoe bomber Richard Reid.

Variety Review:

The sad saga of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl has made it to the bigscreen with facts, figures and beating heart intact in “A Mighty Heart.” In his first studio venture, Michael Winterbottom coaxes forth a staggering wealth of detail from this terse, methodical account of Pearl’s kidnapping and murder in Pakistan, seen through the eyes of those who sought his return. Given audiences’ resistance to films dealing with 9/11 and its aftermath, soberly restrained pic reps a mighty tough sell, though Angelina Jolie’s performance as Pearl’s widow should broaden prospects for the June 22 Stateside release.
Adapting Mariane Pearl’s harrowing memoir, director Winterbottom, who previously ventured into Mideast politics with “In This World” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” proves to be just the man for the task. Though the prolific British chameleon isn’t one to make the same film twice, his gifts for docudrama storytelling — an ability to shepherd complicated narratives, avoiding every opportunity for sensationalism in favor of a low-key mounting dread — couldn’t be better suited to the material.

Having covered the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pearls were working as journalists in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 23, 2002 — the day Danny (”Capote” scribe Dan Futterman), chasing a story about foiled shoe bomber Richard Reid, got into a cab and never returned. Sticking close to the very pregnant Mariane (Jolie), pic recounts the restless five-week search for the man’s whereabouts and his kidnappers’ identities, all accompanied by a hailstorm of media attention.

Screenplay crisply diagrams the labyrinth of false leads and fruitless interrogations with various middlemen Danny may have had contact with on the night of his disappearance. Suspicion ultimately comes to rest on the elusive Omar Saeed Sheikh (Alyy Khan), a known Islamic militant with a history of kidnapping foreigners.

Like his fellow suspects, Sheikh is seen only briefly, and in the most objective possible light. Working in the brisk, discursive style of a police procedural, Winterbottom scrupulously follows the rescue effort, step by agonizing step — ensuring that the audience is never given additional information despite its foreknowledge of the tragic outcome. Even larger political questions — the implications, say, of a scene in which a Pakistani suspect is strung up and interrogated, or the grim irony of a journalist couple facing intense media scrutiny — are subjugated to the flow of the storytelling.

Along the way, pic also manages to sketch vivid portraits of Mariane’s key supporters and allies. These include Danny’s tough-minded colleague, Asra Nomani (Archie Panjabi); a local cop (Irffhan Khan), known simply as Captain, determined not to let the case soil Pakistan’s reputation; American diplomatic security agent Randall Bennett (Will Patton), who tends to see the silver lining in all bad news; and Wall Street Journal higher-up John Bussey (Denis O’Hare), who arrives in Pakistan after news of the ordeal, a comforting but resilient figure.

But this is ultimately — and very intimately — Mariane Pearl’s story, and much of it rests on Jolie, who fits comfortably into the naturalistic mold that shapes the entire ensemble. Though Jolie sports a big belly, a high-coiffed hairstyle and a very challenging accent (raised in France, Mariane is of Afro-Cuban and Dutch descent), this isn’t the sort of commanding star turn in which the performer vanishes behind a well-known celebrity mask, but rather a subdued, carefully considered portrait of a woman caught between premature grief and persistent hope.

Jolie plays Mariane as sharp and prickly, but also highly principled and completely devoted to her husband. Wisely, Winterbottom opts to shoot her more high-pitched outbursts from a distance or in near-darkness, as if refusing to milk more histrionics than necessary.

Occasional subdued flashbacks to happier days from Mariane and Danny’s marriage, including a very brief love scene, add emotional texture even as they take something away from the film’s otherwise unsentimental approach.

Pic negotiates its way around another potential landmine — to show or not to show the widely circulated video of Pearl’s murder — re-creating a very brief, non-graphic snippet of the contentious footage and getting the facts across with the utmost restraint.

Shot on location in Pakistan, India and France, the film gains considerable authenticity and momentum from its handheld DV lensing by Winterbottom’s regular d.p., Marcel Zyskind, and Peter Christelis’ rapid editing, rarely allowing a shot to last more than a few seconds.

Mr and Mrs Smith @ 05/23/2007 at 2:34 pm

Premiere review.

“A Mighty Heart”

Given her tabloid noteriety, is it possible for Angelina Jolie to even register a performance anymore? That is, when on screen, can she make you believe that you are not looking at Angelina Jolie? That’s just one of the questions going through my mind before seeing A Mighty Heart, the much-bruited film adaptation of Mariane Pearl’s memoir starring Jolie as Pearl, co-produced by Jolie’s companion Brad Pitt, and directed by Michael Winterbottom. (Pearl was the wife of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in early 2002. Mariane, also a journalist, was five months pregnant with their son at the time.)

The answer to the question is “kind of.” Which is not to say that Jolie does not perform to the fullest of her capabilities, or that she is ineffective. But what makes her convincing here has as much to do with how she is shot as what she does.

The ever astute Winterbottom has cast the film as a procedural and an ensemble piece. Contrary to what many might have inferred from the production stills, official-and-non, that emerged during the making of the film, this is not a picture wherein a lone Mariane Pearl wanders wide-eyed through the streets of Karachi in a heroic search for her missing spouse. Mariane spends most of the time in the rented house of a friend and colleague (Archie Panjabi), surrounded by a partially ad hoc team—a Pakistani police captain, an American diplomat, a couple of Wall Street Journal staffers, etc.—trying to piece together the hows and whys of Pearl’s abduction. (Pearl himself is played very well by Dan Futterman in his likable straight-shooter mode.)

Winterbottom appears to understand that no matter how much she is made up (here she is given a darker complexion and ringletted hair to better resemble the Afro-Cuban/Dutch Pearl; she looks pretty much just like herself regardless), there is no way an audience is going to look at her onscreen and NOT see Angelina Jolie. He employs a couple of strategies to tackle this. In the initial sequences of the film, he rarely puts her in the frame all by herself; she’s always in part of some bustle, even if she’s in the foreground. He also cuts very quickly; he doesn’t give her any “moments.” Thus, he makes her just a part of what he’s weaving, much of which involves getting the viewer as deep as film possibly can get one into the feel of Karachi. Winterbottom’s particularly good with environments, and he’s also a deft, quick storyteller, and he juggles chronology in a way that gives us a quick, empathy-generating read of Daniel and Mariane’s passionate involvement while moving the kidnap tale at almost full throttle.

Later, at moments when Mariane is most emotionally fraught, Winterbottom makes us not see Jolie by sort of not showing her to the viewer; he will shoot her from behind, or in silhouette. We don’t get a full-on, well lit face-forward shot of Mariane screaming until she’s giving birth to her and Daniel’s son Adam. And by this point of the film, it works.

As does, I should say, the rest of the picture, which is involving and moving in the mode of another war-zone Winterbottom picture, Welcome to Sarajevo. Jolie and Pitt were very smart to get a director who doesn’t do star turns to do Jolie’s star turn. I dare say she’s got at least an Oscar nomination locked.

Times Review:

Michael Winterbottom’s harrowing film about Danny Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and decapitated in Karachi in 2002, is a raw account about the frantic efforts to get him back. It nails the ghastly moment when journalists became prized scalps for terror organisations. Angelina Jolie plays Pearl’s pregnant wife, Mariane – on whose memoir the film is based – with a rigour and passion that surprised even the most jaded sceptics in Cannes.

The film begins on the day Danny (Dan Futterman) fails to turn up for supper. He is working on a story about the shoe bomber, Richard Reid, and has arranged a meeting with an organisation who have background knowledge. A missed supper becomes a crisis within 24 hours. The film charts the hollow weeks Danny is missing mostly through Mariane’s eyes. The house of a close colleague becomes headquarters during the desperate search for motives and information.

There is a confusion of investigators treading on each other toes, and contradictory information about who might have snatched Pearl. Leaks and rash speculation in the press add to the vertiginous panic. At times it’s difficult to know who exactly is in charge. A terrific cast of fixers and officials tease out clues from laptops, emails, and telephone numbers. An uneasy alliance is gradually forged between an American diplomatic security agent, Randall Bennett (Will Patton), various Wall Street Journal friends including the editor, John Bussey (Denis[correct] O’Hare), the head of the Pakistan’s brand new counter-terrorism unit, Captain (Irrfan Khan), the Citizens Police Liaison Committee, and the FBI.

At the still centre of this increasingly tense investigation is Jolie’s defiant Mariane. The film shuttles manically between meetings, endless telephone calls, the growing media frenzy, and the streets of Karachi with terrific confidence. What the kidnapping means to each character is etched on their faces. The power of this giant documentary-style jigsaw lies between the rumours, the false leads, and the hard details. Winterbottom captures brilliantly the chaos of daily life in Pakistan, and the febrile atmosphere as Pearl is first denounced as a CIA spy, and then – when his Jewish roots are fatally exposed – an agent for Mossad.

The director’s rapid-fire and choppy editing gives you a genuine feel for the many different sides of Karachi, and the urgency of the investigation. Shots of street vendors and overloaded buses are slotted between armed raids and interrogations. You can almost smell the fear on suspects. And there’s a controversial flavour about the vested, sometimes murky, interests of assorted officials. Ultimately what makes the film such an affecting modern parable is the authenticity of the emotions. Jolie’s blasts of grief when Marian

From Empire magazine (biggest selling European film mag)

“Going straight out to come back in, we found ourselves sitting in exactly the same seats for Michael Winterbottom’s new film, A Mighty Heart, a true-story-slash-biopic set in Pakistan and starring some American bird called Angelina Jolie. Filmed on the hoof in India, but shot so stunningly you’d swear they’d closed down the whole country for the shoot, the film tells the story of Daniel Pearl, a Wall Street Journal writer who was kidnapped by jihadists, on suspicion of being a CIA and Mossad operative, then viciously beheaded in the first of many militant video statements issued in the wake of 9/11. Jolie plays his widow, Mariane, but she isn’t always the focus, sometimes sliding into the background whenever Winterbottom’s film morphs into United 93-type reconstruction. Anyone who doubts her acting talent will be hard pushed to find fault with her performance here; the French accent and (controversial) dusky looks are very convincing indeed, but if there’s a fault to be found it’s perhaps that the film lacks a little in subtext. Then again, it seems churlish to say that: Winterbottom finds terrific flavour in the backstreets, and there’s a poignant sense of camaraderie to counter the cruelty. “

Cannes Review: A Mighty Heart
Posted May 22nd 2007 9:31PM by James Rocchi

Over the past few years, director Michael Winterbottom’s leapt from genre to genre with a far-ranging deftness where the distance of the jumps is matched only by the agility of the landings. He’s given us rollicking rock-and-roll comedy (24 Hour Party People), innovative literary adaptations (Jude, The Claim, Tristam Shandy: A **** and Bull Story), partially-baked sci-fi (Code 46), art-house sexuality (9 Songs), gripping documentary (The Road to Guantanamo) and more — and quietly putting together a filmography whose scope and quality put him near Steven Soderbergh’s level of production and excellence. A Mighty Heart, playing outside of competition here at Cannes, sees him working with his biggest star to date — Angelina Jolie — and turning a true story into a compelling, intellectually and emotionally engaging film that may take him from the art house to the mainstream.

A Mighty Heart is adapted from the memoirs of journalist Mariane Pearl (Jolie), who was posted, along with her Wall Street Journal reporter husband Daniel (Dan Futterman), to Karachi Pakistan, in the wake of 9/11. In 2002, the Pearls were literally one day away from leaving Karachi when Daniel had one last interview to conduct — a tentative meeting with an elusive subject. He left as his wife was preparing a farewell dinner with their friends in the area. He never returned.

Part of A Mighty Heart is a police procedural played out on the global stage, as U.S. personnel (led by Will Patton’s Randall Bennett) and Pakistani authorities (led by Irrfan Khan’s character, known simply as ‘Captain’) scour Karachi’s backstreets and secret places, trying to find the extremists who have kidnapped Daniel. On the home front, Mariane worked her own connections and sources along with her husband’s Wall Street Journal peers (Asra Norman’s Archie Panjabi) and superiors (Denis O’Hare’s John Bussey). It’s hard to imagine anyone who doesn’t know how this story ends — Pearl was executed, as captured on a notorious videotape, weeks after his abduction — and that pall of certainty hangs over all of the character’s efforts and struggles. We know this ends in death; at the same time, the frustration, panic and worry captured on screen show that the real people involved at the time knew that was a possibility from the instant Daniel Pearl didn’t come home.

If one thing elevates A Mighty Heart above ripped-from-the-headlines melodrama — and you shudder to think what a less-talented director could have done with this material — it’s Winterbottom’s insistence of shooting in Karachi and incorporating a real sense of place into every frame of the film. Karachi’s a sprawling, squalid metropolis — cluttered streets and grinding poverty — and its role as a crossroads in the war on terror, and a crossroads for the war terror wages against the world, hums and thrums throughout every scene.

The supporting cast is all excellent, but special praise has to go to Khan and Futterman. Khan’s character is the head of the new Pakistani anti-terrorism unit, and he’s a man torn between the public pronouncements of support for the West’s initiatives and the labyrinthine power-struggles of his government and massive public support for radical Islamic action. The Captain is the face of a new kind of power in Pakistan, and Khan’s every line, every motion has the coiled power of a punch about to land, even in stillness. Futterman’s challenge in portraying Pearl is trickier — after the initial sequences of the film we only see him in flashback or in photos and video — but Futterman still makes Pearl come alive for us as a husband, a lover, a son, a journalist.

Jolie’s portrayal of Pearl — who was six months pregnant when her husband was abducted — has been the subject of some controversy due to some mild cosmetic elements — her hair is curlier, her skin slightly darkened to convey the real Mariane Pearl’s Cuban-French heritage — but there’s nothing insensitive or overdone in the mild make-up artistry of the part; the inner performance is what shines out. Jolie’s Pearl may feel fear, but never hate — and her public face of grace and calm is one part humanism, one part strategy. She’s deliberately trying not to provoke the men who hold her husband captive — and she also truly believes that peace and justice are the ultimate weapons against those who would kill and maim in the name of God. Asked about Karachi’s role as a cultivator of terrorism, Marianne’s reply is fast, smart and sincere: “Wherever there is misery, they find people.”

But Jolie’s Mariane Pearl isn’t some plaster secular saint, either; when the inevitable end to the story comes crashing down, her howling, devastated grief ripples off the screen with brute force and power. (And frankly, the make-up artistry in the film re-contextualizes Jolie’s well-publicized features in a way that lets her simply act to a degree she hasn’t been able to in years.) John Orloff’s scrrenplay adaptation of Mariane Pearl’s book is strong, but it’s Winterbottom style and choices — location shooting, a fluid sense of time, a run-and-gun approach to scenes — that make A Mighty Heart stand out as more than just a tragedy. The Cannes production notes for A Mighty Heart point out that in the five years since Daniel Pearl’s brutal murder, nearly 230 other journalists have been killed on the job through out the world. A Mighty Heart shows us the death of one man, but it also demonstrates how the forces that would destroy us despise the truth itself — and how killing those who try to bring truth to the world through a free press is a cornerstone of terror’s brutish, ignorant war against civilization itself.

Guys, there is ONLY ONE bad review: and not even really bad. The journalist says Angie’s acting is “merely adequate”. “A Mighty” Impressive Performance From Jolie
CANNES — May 21 late morning

Angelina Jolie won the Oscar of course. But she’s made so many high profile flicks like Tomb Raider and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, not to mention a personal life that combines Brad Pitt with humanitarian work, that it’s easy to forget she’s a very good actress. No one’s going to forget after A Mighty Heart, the Michael Winterbottom film based on the true story of Mariane Pearl and her husband Daniel, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and brutally killed by Islamic terrorists.

Winterbottom’s film is typically dispassionate and very smart and Jolie blends in beautifully with a large cast. She sports a tricky accent worthy of Meryl Streep, but this is not even remotely a showy role. But few will forget her anguished cry of pain when the terrible truth that Daniel had been beheaded was broadcast over the Internet to the entire world. Beautifully, that same cry of pain is echoed a few minutes later, when Mariane is seen giving birth.

Pitt was an executive producer on the film and they both appeared at the press conference, along with Mariane. And yes, it was a mad house. Now we know what it takes to out-draw Michael Moore at a Cannes press conference: the most beautiful couple in the world. By the way, if you haven’t read Pearl’s book A Mighty Heart, it’s quite good. — Michael Giltz

Mr and Mrs Smith @ 05/23/2007 at 2:36 pm

Indiewire

In a festival that has felt surprisingly withdrawn from world politics (all of the above films are very inner-directed), Michael Winterbottom’s gripping thriller “A Mighty Heart” feels like a refreshing blast from the real world. (What, no war films this year?) Despite the potential sentimentality of the subject matter - the film is told through the perspective of Mariane Pearl, the five-months pregnant wife of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl - “A Mighty Heart” tells a complex, suspenseful tale of political intrigue, Pakistani-Indian relations, journalistic ethics, torture and yes, the emotional turmoil of losing a loved one.

While Angelina Jolie’s Mariane Pearl occasionally loses her French accent, she makes up for the misstep with a sturdy, anguished performance that eventually succumbs to a volcanic eruption of grief. If the portrayal is already generating Oscar talk, it’s also better than such fatuous plaudits. As Mariane Pearl emphatically said at the news conference on Monday morning, the film exists above-and-beyond Academy buzz. “It’s not about us,” Pearl said. “It’s not about being famous and making more money or any of that. It’s about a situation in the world that everybody is aware of.”

Angelina Jolie Panned by Critic: ‘A Mighty Heart’ Performance Detached

By Heather Parker

Notice it is SINGULAR…notice even the HACK National Alledger author says it was ONE review among many…we all know the hack Alledger people are haters, lying in wait for any bad news about AJ, so when even THEY can’t come up with more than one, you know it’s ALL GOOD for Brangie fans. LOL

Guys, this is THE EXACT SAME singular review posted on National Alledger I was referring to several posts up — it was from YESTERDAY. Again, this is the National Alledger HACK, who picked one negative review (and it really isn’t that bad — they say AJ is ‘adequate’ as opposed to what Maniston gets labeled in her films, you know, ‘inadequate’ — lololol) an dtrie dto run with it…but even SHE admits, the consensus is out there and she had the impression AJ would pick up her second Oscar…and yet she breathlessly posts writes about the only semi-negative review she can find.

The hater mentality is hilarious.

Hollywood Elsewhere:

The agreeably shocking thing about Michael Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart, which had its first-time-anywhere press screening this morning inside the Grand Palais, is that it’s not a Michael Winterbottom film. Not, I mean to say, a film that has seemingly emerged from the palette and the sensibility of the director of The Road to Guantan- amo, Tristram Shandy: A **** and Bull Story, 9 Songs, Code 46 and 24 Hour Party People…all but one of which I had problems with to varying degrees.

Instead, A Mighty Heart is a Michael Mann film — a tight, absorbing, sharply assembled investigative procedural. It summons memories of the pacing, the underplayed performances and the sense of swiss-watch exactitude that have come to be associated with Mann’s films. I can’t recall another film in which a name-brand director has so totally abandoned a signature style (wait…does Winterbottom have one?) and just become, in a sense, “someone else.”

A Mighty Heart is about the kidnapping and murder ofWall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl (Dan Futterman), as experienced by his distraught widow Mariane Pearl (Angelina Jolie). It’s handsomely shot (especially surprising given the generally meh photography in Winterbottom’s previous films), intricate and yet surprisingly easy to keep track of, and very deftly edited.

And in it, Jolie has given a completely satisfying and quite admirable performance which feels to me like the best thing she’s ever done. More mature and less showy than her nutter turn in Girl Interrupted (for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The role of Mariane Pearl isn’t exactly a showboat thing (although there’s a very strong grief-venting scene in the third act that everyone will remember). It’s not about histrionics as much as just getting it right and staying with the truth of it — but Jolie’s carefully measured emoting plus her aural and physical resemblances to the Real McCoy make this performance a fairly safe bet for a Best Actress Oscar campaign later this year.

Call me prejudiced, but the only bad review I have read of this movie is from someone with a middle eastern name. I would like to know more about her agenda and her worldview and the publication this is taken from. I suspect that THE PROBLEM SHE IS HAVING IS NOT WITH THE ACTRESS, THE ACTING OR THE DIRECTING, but rather with THE PERSPECTIVE. i SUSPECT HER WORLDVIEW ID DIFFERENT from Marianne Pearle’s.

“What baffles is that Winterbottom appears only timidly to condemn those behind the crime. ”

Again, Call me crazy, but the movie is based on Marianne Pearle’s book. If the widow does not condemn the killers, then how can the movie? It’s not the director’s story it’s Ms. Pearl’s. Moron!!!

Angelina Jolie Panned by Critic: ‘A Mighty Heart’ Performance Detached

By Heather Parker
May 22, 2007

===============================================

Heather P. did not see the movie herself, she is clearly referring to the same ONE negative review of a person (Farah Nayeri.) who obviously – in my humble opinion – did not read the book and/or did not understand that AMH is MARIANNE’s story. SHE wrote the book AND the film is based on that book, thus referring what she went through.
So, how could the film be made following Daniel, showing his kidnapping and beheading and/or reflect emotions and opinions that MP DID NOT WANT in her book? That would have been a completely different film, mind you, also very interesting I believe. But that is NOT what MP wanted.

To Farah N. I would say: Please respect this brave woman’s choice and her life story. If you (and others) want a bloody film, filled with hatred, bombs, shots, riots et cetera, then find yourself a film company, producer, actors and actresses, financers and directors and make it yourself.

Now regarding Jolie’s performance. Jolie played MP who is a calm, restrained person, apparently even in very difficult circumstances. It is important to keep in mind that not everybody reacts the same in certain circumstances. In any case: From other review AND – most importantly – from Marianne herself I already concluded that she nailed it. Jolie WAS Marianne. In my book, that is acting, especially when one is portraying a real person.

Finally, everyone is entitled to their opinion, one being more substantiated than others. However, one would expect a more balanced, more carefully argued opinion of a reporter. Though, being a reporter for Bloomberg perhaps did not prepare this person for such a task.

Times Review:

A Mighty Heart

Jolie’s blasts of grief when Mariane hears the dreaded news that her husband has been beheaded pricks tears and raises the hairs on your neck.

Variety Review:

A Mighty Heart

A Mighty Heart

Jolie Film About Daniel Pearl Filmmaking of Highest Order
“A Mighty Heart,” Angelina Jolie’s film about the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, had its first screening Monday morning at the Cannes Film Festival.

Simply put, the Michael Winterbottom film is an exceptional piece of work, deeply affecting and filmmaking of the highest order.

In purely Hollywood terms, the film is a certain Oscar nominee. Everyone involved in “A Mighty Heart” - from Winterbottom to Jolie as Pearl’s widow, Mariane, to Dan Futterman as Daniel Pearl - can be proud of a job very well done.

Based on the book by Mariane Pearl, the film follows the pregnant Mariane as searches for her husband following his disappearance in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2002. At the time, Daniel Pearl was writing a story about shoe bomber Richard Reid.
Winterbottom’s cinema verité-style only adds to the immediacy of the Pearl tragedy.

This director has done a remarkable job.

from lainey who is covering th @ 05/23/2007 at 4:12 pm

from lainey who is now covering the Cannes Festival in Cannes –

A Mighty Heart

They were here today for A Mighty Heart – the screening took place at 10:45am following by a photo call and then a press conference at 1pm.

About the film - very well received, with some comparing Michael Winterbottom’s direction to Michael Mann’s: tightly shot with a journalist’s eye, almost like a reality show without the fake. One of the actor’s at one point during the question period actually said Winterbottom would have followed them into the loo if they were still in character.

Those who were hoping it will suck will be very disappointed. A Might Heart does not suck. Not even close. In fact, it made me cry… because you can’t imagine the strength of this woman – what she went through, how she fought, how in spite of the murder of her husband while pregnant with his child, somehow she manages to continue to believe in humanity.

And even though this post is primarily about smut, I’d be remiss to undercredit the remarkable Mariane Pearl. She is incredibly impressive. Which is why there has been much criticism levelled at the casting: that Angelina and Mariane look nothing alike, that they are from different ethic backgrounds, that in hiring Angelina to play the role, it effectively robbed other actresses with more similar physical characteristics the opportunity.

On film, the resemblance is adequate. You still KNOW it’s Angelina Jolie but it’s not a stretch of the imagination either. More importantly, her acting and her accent do the part justice. She is different in this movie than she has been in others. You know most of the time, when Angelina Jolie delivers a line, because of the nature of her films like Tomb Raider and Mr and Mrs Smith, the delivery is always tinged with a little action hero cheese – like Bruce Willis without a *****?

Well in A Mighty Heart, her speech patterns are different, she’s less of a caricature than she is a character, and she shows more range than she ever has before, and that could explain why they are seriously considering an Oscar run. I’m not sure if I’d go that far but never underestimate the Paramount hype machine. The lips however…the lips are way to distracting. Not in person but definitely on film. Is it possible to make them smaller?

Sorry, I digress.

Mariane Pearl was front and centre during the press conference. The first questions were directed at her. And so in her charming, multilingual way, she addressed questions about her involvement and about how she wanted to tell her story. One of the first things she did therefore was to stress that she herself was the one to pick Angelina Jolie for the part. She approached her, she asked her, and she says she is thrilled with the result. Now is not a celebrity, she is a private person, so she did not give in to that voyeuristic need for all of us to see her emote on a stage when questions about her memories came up. Needless to say, seeing a film chronicling the kidnapping and subsequent death of her husband must have been unimaginably painful. And yet she stayed away from the melodrama and focused instead on the message: she wanted to do justice to Danny’s life and she was grateful for Angelina’s respect of her wishes – she actually went so far as to say something to the effect of “it meant even more because Angelina is someone that I love”. Of course at that point, Angelina almost cried.

And so you can hear that subtle but powerful underlying message, right? Mariane Pearl, who is beyond reproach, has given her stamp of approval to Angelina Jolie. So whose place is it to argue her judgement?

And still…it would unfair to end on that note. Because Mariane Pearl is amazing. She has this way of speaking, of holding herself, of treating the most haunting subject matter with such poise and such peace, it’s hard not to feel comfortable in her presence. Mariane Pearl is all class. And regardless of your feelings about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, her life story is absolutely, 100% worth sharing.

I like the interview, however not so much the way how Ann asks suggestive questions or handles it as if she were a therapist. But I appreciate Angelina for her greatness not to compare her situation of losing her mom with Mariana Pearl’s violent lost of her husband. Though the lost of her mother is still very painful for her, she doesn’t want self-pity from anybody, she remains analytically very clear minded and refuses any comparison.
I have always admired Angelina not only for her clearness of never pretending to be something else but herself, but also for her generous way of thinking to let people be who they are or want to be … and this including tabloids and those who want to believe in tabloids.

Many of us admire Angelina, but some others will find ways not to like her…. Hate her or like her, Angelina has the generosity to leave us the way we are. She wouldn’t try to sell herself just to buy our credits. So it’s up to us to decide what feelings we’ve got inside. Our feelings don’t affect her at all, however to ourselves.

You fans (the real ones) should know that a lot of people from the Dlisted site come here just to mess with you. Leave them alone and they’ll get bored and go away.

I love your post coco, especially the part about how are feelings, positive or negative, doesn’t affect angelina at all ,but they do affect us-i know for me its for the good, hatred will eat you up in the end.

The last time I wore a tux was five years ago … and I swore I’d never wear one again until my own wedding. See, I’m a journalist and I work for Microsoft. That combination means I dress as comfortably and shabbily as I possibly can. But when the good folks at Paramount Vantage called a few months ago and offered me a ticket to the world premiere of “A Mighty Heart,” followed by a special dinner attended by Angelina Jolie, well, forget my wedding! A chance to walk the red-carpeted steps of the Grand Theatre Lumiere and be in the same room with Jolie (and probably Brad Pitt)? Where’s the nearest tux shop?

See, when you attend a premiere in Cannes, everyone dresses to the nines. It’s mandatory: tuxedos for the boys; gorgeous, sexy, revealing dresses for the girls. Crowds begin lining up two or three hours before a premiere to get a glimpse of their favorite stars. Paparazzi cram into fenced-off pits trying to get the best shots. And as I mentioned last year, women and men, all dressed up with nowhere to go, hang about with signs, begging for a ticket (it’s like a Grateful Dead show, minus the patchouli oil and weed).

It’s a crazy, unique, wonderful thing … in theory. Right now, it’s 80 degrees in Cannes, and super muggy. It’s been that way since Day 1, and though we’ve had the threat of rain, no relief appears in sight. Eighty degrees, muggy, tux. Do the math. By the time I stepped onto the famed red carpet, I was sweating like a 500-pound man who got locked inside a sauna. It wasn’t pretty … but damn if everyone else didn’t look just as uncomfortable. It’s quite a scene, let me tell you, and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I was worried about tripping and falling down all 20 stairs.

Once inside and seated, the audience can watch the movie screen as others enter the theater. Oh, there’s Gérard Depardieu. Oh, hey, there is … some random, stunning model who thinks she’s a star and is taking 10 minutes to walk up the steps. Hey, there’s a wrinkly old French dude who must be someone important because everyone is kissing him. Ah, OK, here we go … Angelina and Brad. People went nuts. The pair looked incredible (painfully so … I mean, it’s unnatural) and now I’ll play the role of fashion critic: Brad was stunning in his black tuxedo, hair cut short and styled like Cary Grant. Angelina, hair pulled back, looked statuesque in a black dress made by some designer for some ridiculous price that could feed the entire population of a Third-World country. Sorry, best I can do for you, folks. Ain’t my bag.

When they finally made their way into the theater, they received a heroes’ welcome from the thousands that packed it (by this point, I had lost 27 pounds and was swimming in my rented, shiny shoes). There was someone else there too … who was it? Oh, right. Mariane Pearl and her son, Adam. They are the subjects of “A Mighty Heart” (you thought I’d forgot about the movie, didn’t you?) and when I saw them, I suddenly realized how yucky this whole fashion parade was.

You all know the story of Wall Street Journal scribe Daniel Pearl. Of how, in January 2002, he was kidnapped while following a lead in Karachi, and how several weeks later, he was beheaded, setting off a string of post-Sept. 11 journalist deaths (230 and rising) in the Middle East region. “A Mighty Heart” is based of Mariane Pearl’s memoir, which details those weeks she spent trying to find her husband and the chaos of the region. It’s a stirring work dedicated to Adam to show him the kind of man his father was, because they would never meet.

Although I agree celebration is in order for getting this story on the big screen, against the context of premiere night in Cannes and the celebrity obsession … I don’t know. It just felt wrong.

But to the movie. It’s made by Michael Winterbottom, who’s crafted films in nearly every genre (”The Claim,” “Jude,” “24 Hour Party People,” “Tristram Shandy: A **** and Bull Story”) and has taken on political subject matter several times (though I’d argue poorly and in a heavy-handed manner) with “The Road to Guantanamo” and “Welcome to Sarajevo.” “A Mighty Heart” is far better than those last two films, though not without its own serious flaws.

The entire film covers the weeks between the kidnapping of Pearl (played mostly in flashback by Dan Futterman) until his eventual death — a technique that is always tricky. How do you keep an audience engaged in a story to which they know the ending, especially one as tragic and brutal as this? Winterbottom pulls it off by creating a dizzying, confusing, fast-paced mystery, mostly without sentimentality, that reveals layers and layers of international deceit and deception. And most importantly, he has Jolie. In easily her finest performance, Jolie the pop-culture figure loses herself inside the role of Pearl. Mariane is of Cuban and French descent, and when you put the two women side by side, you’d never think Jolie could pull it off. But she does. Her hair is curly, complexion changed and she’s pregnant the entire film. While the world spins out of control around her, Pearl (and Jolie) remains centered and the film becomes as much about a wife’s love for her husband as the evil surrounding them. But it’s also here that Winterbottom and screenwriter John Orloff make their biggest mistake: As the film moves forward, Mariane Pearl becomes more a saint than human. She is allowed no flaws in the film to the point where it threatens the validity of the circumstances (a final speech she gives, postmurder, to a group that helped try to find Daniel is the type of stuff Oscar voters may love but is unnecessary and slightly embarrassing).

That said, the film is still quite effective and moving and infuriating. And the sold-out audience loved it. Pearl and Jolie received a standing ovation that lasted well past five minutes. They both deserve it in their own ways.

Critics have praised Jolie for her portrayal of a woman who desperately seeks her husband through phone and e-mail trails and in the teeming city of Karachi, a hotbed of militancy just after the 9/11 attacks.
“The world forms opinions and has a view and does tabloid things and fortunately none of that is inside my home,” she said at the exclusive Du Cap hotel. “I (am) focused on getting the kids to school, I’m focused on the balance of all the children.”

Thanks for the link to the interview- twas very moving, anyone who has lost someone close will undertand those feelings. Yet for all she has been through I love how Angelina references and steers the conversation back to Mariannes story. I don’t care for the interviewers style but to be fair that’s just a petty personal gripe. I’m delighted the film has got such good revues, I’m so looking forward to seeing it.

CANNES, France (Reuters) - It is her children that keep Angelina Jolie’s feet firmly on the ground while the paparazzi follow her every move, and motherhood helped the star prepare for her role as the pregnant wife of slain reporter Daniel Pearl.
The 31-year-old actress, who with her off-screen companion Brad Pitt has formed the celebrity super-couple dubbed “Brangelina,” plays Mariane Pearl, wife of the Wall Street Journal journalist who was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic militants in Pakistan in 2002.

Mariane Pearl, who wrote a book about her experiences, was about six months pregnant at the time, and Jolie filmed “A Mighty Heart” not long after she gave birth to her daughter Shiloh.

MEMORIES OF NAMIBIA
Jolie was in Namibia when discussing the script with Mariane Pearl and British director Michael Winterbottom as she prepared to give birth to Shiloh.
“We were all in Namibia and I was six months pregnant, and I remember seeing Mariane and talking to her about being pregnant.

it seems like everyone in the OCEANS 13 cast were at the AMFAR benefit tonight, EXCEPT BP.

Really do not like the interviewer, but Angie is always mesmerizing.

i love MSN review by dave mccoy, that seem like an unbiased opinion, and i agree jolie and marianne deserve all the praise they’re receiving.

I actually enjoyed the MSN recap, especially when the guy said that angie and marianne recived a 5 minute standing ovation and both deserve it. Thanks :D

RD Audio part 2 @ 05/23/2007 at 5:01 pm

My speakers are not working, anyone wants to give a recap?

The haters never fail! I honestly believe that there’s a conspiracy going on w/ haters/writters who have access to write articles in the net. Every time there’s a lot of good things going with this couple, you will see 2, 3, 4 articles out there that says negative things about this two. I think they do that to make sure that ignorant haters do not get influenced to be pro Angelina. I can’t believe whiwho wrote this article! He claims Angelina can end it by coming clean…who the heck does he think he is? Angelina doesn’t owe the haters any explanation or apology!

Looks like Brad was a no show and don cheadle wasn’t there either.

OT
What’s up with Ted C? He’s out of the loop on gossip about real celebs, all he talks about is Lindsey, Paris, Nicole and the reality celebrities. He’s being scooped by Perez and Lainey, maybe it’s time to put the old horse to pasture.

A MIGHTY HEART
Directed by: Michael Winterbottom
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman, Archie Panjabi

PLOT: A film based on a book written by journalist Mariane Pearl, outlining her courageous search, struggle and life during the kidnapping and execution of during her journalist husband’s tragic disappearance and death.

CRITIQUE: Although the film is about the struggle of two honest journalists on a mission to uncover the truth behind the ‘shoe bomber’, I think Winterbottom doesn’t stray from capturing the essence of the film and the message Mariane intended on relaying. There are several reasons why I was truly touched by and enjoyed the film, the first being its pace. The story’s suspense and drama unfolded at a steady pace, giving us plenty of excitement and action to keep us guessing ‘til the end. Since this is based on an actual news story whose sad fate we are well aware of, I still found myself hoping and wishing that the story would someone take a magical detour to a different conclusion.

Another reason I liked the film was that it refrained from using unnecessary, grotesque violence to over glamorize and sensationalize the story. We are familiar with the types of torture and brutality bestowed upon innocent journalists imprisoned and kidnapped during a time of war but we need not be visually reminded of the stomach turning extremities. It’s bad enough that we’re constantly flashed with heartbreaking images of torture in prison camps by television news. Obviously, Mrs. Pearl had very different intentions with this educational and inspirational book.

Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Mariane Pearl was very impressive. Despite the validity and clarity of her accent, I was moved by her performance and struggle to remain calm and rational during a time of calamity. Although it was apparent that terrorist groups kidnapped Danny Pearl played by Dan Futterman, Mariane’s maturity and impartiality in dealing with the tragedy was moving and inspiring. The film could very easily have turned into a political piece but its success was contingent upon her display of diplomacy and dedication to honor journalism, not sensationalism.

An incredibly tear jerking and striking moment was Mariane’s reaction in the scene where she received the fateful news. Jolie’s characterization was so powerful and resonant it continued to linger in my mind long after the film’s end. I’m sure boyfriend and producer Brad Pitt along with the real life Mrs. Pearl were as proud and afflicted as I was with her performance and honest depiction of the events. Rather than becoming consumed with hatred and bitterness, it was remarkable to see how a woman like Pearl survived and rose above a major paralyzing and devastating blow to her life. All in all, I believe Winterbottom did a fine job in directing an effective and significant film while providing drama, suspense and action. — 7/10

I wish In Touch and everyone else would shut the hell up about when the JPs are expanding their family either through birth or through adoption. They have FOUR KIDS already in less than two years. It’s THEIR choice if and when they will adopt another child or have another child. Everyone else should butt out and mind their own business.

WOW I was over at TMZ and the topic about the fight between Rosie and Elizabeth has more than 800 replays!

I just went to the Reader Digest site and they have not added any new audio parts to the interview. It has not been updated since 5/11/2007. I get errors messages with that link to the alleged second part. I wonder if this part is the one I have read all along . Originally RD added about a minute more from one day to the next with about 7:30 minutes in total.

Everyone keeps bringing up that scene! I know I’m going to cry like a baby.

That argument between rosie and elizabeth was a classic, its a good thing rosie is leaving in three weeks, you can’t have that much drama going to work everyday-you’ll go crazy

I posted it so you guys can see just how far haters will go to keep the dying triangle story alive! I’m not a hater, I’m a fellow AJ & BP fan so don’t tell me to get “out!”

Thank you for the MSN and joblo reviews. Now we’re at 12 good, 1 bad. So far, so good. Here’s hoping for more of the positive. :)

i think she will get enough votes to get elected in the CFR in june, and also she said she’s working in prague for a couple of months, then taking a couple of months off and then working for two months, the wanted film is done in july, thus if she is going too work for two months after taking two months off what do you think she’ll be working on if its not a movie-she’s an actress-and just because she didn’t mention what movie she’s working on i don’t see how you can presume she’s not working in the changeling.
