Kudos to her! Breasts are for feeding, not for everyone to oggle and put implants in and WonderBras on. I openly breastfeed in public and LOVE when I see other mothers doing it too. She’s awesome! I’ve always loved her work, but I love her more now.

I do not have a problem with women breast feeding in public, but I do not think it was appropriate to take a pic of it or upload it to a website. The above is right. Way too much information.

I don’t have a problem with breatfeeding either, but what I don’t understand why don’t mothers pump before they go out in public and when the child is hungry give him the bottle with the breast milk in it until you get home. Not only would be a courtesy to others around you but it also keeps the mother from having to undo everything just to feed her child while she is out on an outing. The baby don’t care how they receive their meals as long as they get it.

because bottlefeeding can seriously affect breastfeeding, and it is never recommended for a breastfeeding mother unless necessary. it requires a different “kind” of sucking motion. anyway. that is one reason why. also, some women love breastfeeding their babies, as they were emant to. who cares what the public thinks?

What is up with people? She’s feeding her baby (Ramona’s really cute btw.) and she didn’t ask the paps to take pics of her. I personally wouldn’t do it in public, but it’s her decision really! And she doesn’t do anything wrong.

Jen my friend is currently breastfeeding and her doctor said it is okay for her to pump as well (there are special shape nipples on bottles that are similar to the mothers breast). I mean if you working you can’t be with your baby 24 hours to breastfeed, and I did not say there is nothing wrong with it. There is just somethings that should be left for private time in your home or in a “family” public restroom where they have things set up for a mother to do that. However, when you are in public at a restaurant or shopping a mother should prepare a bottle for feeding so that she will be considerate of others around her. I mean we don’t see people changing a babies diaper on the dinner table or cashier counter when checking out? So why should we have to see a mother’s boob hanging out when she could be more descreet with the feeding of her child. I just think it is taking things a bit too far.

i believe in breastfeeding, even in public but it looks like the baby is playing with them not feeding.

Beautiful baby, beautiful mom with a beautiful smile. No one’s forcing any of you to look at the pix if you don’t want. People complain when celebs hide and when they don’t hide. There’s no pleasing everyone and why should she try beyond being the best actress she can? I like it that she lives her life in a fairly normal way and doesn’t pay attention to the paps or the tabs — that’s why she’s smiling, because she can sit outside of a cafe and wait for a table with her family.

Breastfeeding are very common with mothers in public places. It looks like Ramona was playing peek-a-boob with Maggie.

Taking a **** or dump is also a very natural, intimate private thing but it’s not appropriate to do in the middle of the resturant or on the street. No issue that she’s breastfeeding, but common courtesy (and you all ******* know this) is to bring something to cover yourself up. If it’s so intimate and private as so many of you say, than why would she do it in a public place and not cover herself? She knows she is pictured by the paps when she goes out, so what is this all really about?

Well,
Two problems:
1) This is completely normal, and should not be broadcast.
2) Something about this just says fake.

My daughter (3 now) stopped nursing when she was 2 1/2 years old. It is an awesome bond to have and I applaud all who breastfeed. I frequently nursed her in public but covered her always with a blanket. I do want to ask a question: Why is it okay for a baby to be being fed with a bottle (which mimics the female breast) but not okay to be nursed in public? Also, my daughter always refused to drink milk from a bottle, which meant that no matter where we were or what we were doing, if she was hungry, I had to nurse her. I also believe that Maggie is not stupid and is doing this to draw attention to something that is absolutely natural and beautiful. I don’t think it’s because she has no class, which has been said by a previous poster, but because she is making a statement.

If Maggie Gyllenhaal does not want to offer her baby the bottle at odd moments during her day, or cover her baby and breast in a blanket,then so be it. That’s what breasts are for and I say good for her.
Breast aren’t just for sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

I am all for breastfeeding in public too, but you can cover yourself more, use tops with discreet openings …

But now that she is showing us her assets, she is too young to have droopy boobs.

YIKES to the weirdo who breastfed to the child was 3 .. kids have their full set of teeth by 1 yrs old. Nothing wrong with a bond but come on 3 yrs old, did the child walk up to and ask for a breast? I am down for breast feeding but when they are old enough to ask for it, that is too long and more of issue about the mother then the kid.

This is one of the problems with our society, everyone is looking for a fight. Nobody wants to clean out their ears, listen to people, and have reasonable debates. Everybody wants to point fingers and shout at each other.

I don’t think anyone here is disputing the fact that breastfeeding is natural and scared and a bond between mother and child. The two main issues seem to be that the paps have no respect and that Maggie Gyllenhaal should at least keep the bond between her and her child, and not with everyone in the restaurant.

You don’t have to agree with each other, but you should respect your fellow posters by not calling them names like you’re 5 years old. We’re all adults, a lot of you mothers, why can’t we act like it?

Knowing how the internet works, I know I’ll just get a bunch of childish remarks and insults thrown my way, but who cares, I just thought I would give my two cents.

Yes, Hooters is trashy and Yes, Mardi Gras flashers are classless. But that has nothing to do with the issue here. Breasts are too often sexualized in our society but are not and should not be considered sexual objects in all contexts.

Breatfeeding is natural, and a woman nursing a baby is not considered “sexy” to nor is it “disgusting” to most people.

It is OK to Breastfeed in public.

However, not everyone thinks breastfeeding is “beautiful” and many people are not comfortable witnessing the act, or are not comfortable with public semi-nudity - sexual or not - (that’s why many restaurants employ the “no shirt - no shoes no service” rule). Most people probably don’t want to see any man-titties over their Denver omlette either.

Breast feeders who are compelled to nurse in public should respect the feelings of others in public spaces and take steps to cover themselves as much as is reasonable. Maggie is making no attempt at all to be discrete - so yes - she is being inconsiderate of her fellow patrons. The picture taker is an inconsiderate ass as well.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Maggie breastfeeding in public. Breasts are for feeding. That’s what they’re there for! I think she’s a very confident woman for doing this and she should be praised. I think that people should change their views on public breastfeeding.

‘compelled to breastfeed’??? I always laugh when I hear something like this from someone who has obviously never breastfed a child. A mother is not compelled to feed her child, she feeds her child when the child is hungry. It’s simple supply & demand sweetie. I’m sure a lot of moms can tell you, there’s no stopping a baby who wants to eat. Would you rather her force Ramona to go hungry and fuss & cry? Then you would complain that the baby’s crying was disrupting your meal. You just can’t win with people unless you’re forcing an artificial rubber nipple in your child’s mouth!

Personally, I wouldn’t bare that much of my breast in public. I would feel uncomfortable. But that’s just me. I feel that this is a personal decision to be made by each mother. Kudos to Maggie. Breastfeeding in public is fine, when done discreetly. Seeing a women’s breast can cause some people to be uncomfortable, even though the act of breastfeeding is very natural. Also, a women’s lactating breast isn’t really that attractive. So just cover it up.

And some of you need to go to school and do some research to realize that breastfed milk is way HEALTHIER than artificial milk and it is truly important for a baby to suck on the breast rather than drink the milk from a bottle. Its a bonding experience for both mother and child and do I also have to get into the nutritional value of breastfed milk compared to artificial milk thrown together into a bottle?

She’s using a stroller, not a sling like most mothers that are all about ‘the bonding time’ so she should be able to tone down the nursing in public. I have nothing against a mother(blanket or not) who discreetly nurses anywhere,I don’t like the hang it all out there stuff. I don’t think we should have to explain this to children who may witness it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with breastfeeding but when you are out in a public place, it is just considerate to cover yourself. The experience is beautiful and worth doing (I’ve done…did for all of my children) however, as beautiful as it is, everyone does not feel that way. You are in a sense imposing your personal choice on everyone around you. It makes simply makes some unconfortable. I know you may say “so what, who cares?” but then the same words would apply to the mother’s feelings.

Beside, doesn’t the baby deserve a little privacy as well?

I forgot to add-Ramona isn’t even eating in these photos! In two of the photos she’s sucking lightly on the nipple and in the other two she’s playing with the breast. At least in the photo last month she was eating and Maggie was flashing herself for a purpose. This is just ridiculous.

I am a mom to three kids — twins who are 8 and 1 who is 5, and I breastfed them all until age 1. If we were in public, I used shawls or scarves and nursing bras not only for other’s privacy, but because IT IS such an intimate experience between mother and child, that it cheapens it to display it as if you are eating a burger. I am also an OB nurse, and there has been a huge decline in the numbers of breastfeeding moms, and sadly, I believe one of the reasons is the “breastfeeding Nazis” as we call them at the hospital. I have seen these women who are supposed to be nurturing and instructing get angry, berate and mock bottle-feeding mothers in front of newly breastfeeding mothers. There are often medical reasons, especially with neonatals, when breastfeeding is not possible, and this kind of rhetoric only deters women from attempting to give a fair try to breastfeeding and has even added to post-partum depression.

Also, OBs are finding that in new studies, the level of allergies are far greater than back in the sixties and seventies when most children were bottle-fed. This isn’t saying bottle-feeding is better, and environmental factors contribute greatly to the allergy crisis, yet what it has concluded is that they found breastfed babies were no more likely to be immune to all these rampant new food allergies than formula-fed babies.

Breastfeeding is great, and I would encourage everyone to do it. I do think, as a matter of taste and personal mother-child bonding, that it is better left discreet, but the type of venom seen here by those ready to villify anyone who doesn’t breastfeed is also the same type that is causing more and more women to simply forgo it or give it up early in the process.

I agree that a blanket should be given - it should be put over the head of the person who don’t want to see it.

I have no problems with breastfeeding. I breastfed both my kids, but whenever I’m in public, I ALWAYS threw a baby receiving blanket over my baby. It’s completely natural, but I know it could make plenty of people feel uneasy. It’s not fair to make people around you feel that way. She should have covered up. Whatever…

I can’t imagine what kind of place in life people would have to be in to be upset with someone breastfeeding their baby! Not only is it the way we are designed to care provide for our babies, it is also the most wonderful way to bond.

Isn’t it interesting that you can see sexed-out breasts in the window of a Victoria’s Secret on streets and malls throughout America, and yet breastfeeding a baby in public is considered gross and inconsiderate by many who posted these comments. I guess that when breasts are used for something other than titillating men, some people feel threatened and angry.

Yeah whatever, it’s called attachment parenting! World Health Org. suggests bfing until AT LEAST 2 years of age. I fully intend to allow my baby to nurse as long as she would like. Why should I force her to wean? More than likely she’ll wean next time I get pregnant, but if she doesn’t, that’s ok, too. In fact, in most countries, it’s quite normal to breastfeed babies for far longer than one year. Besides, if more babies were breastfed that long, maybe they’d be old enough to form memories of breasts being for food and not think of them as sexual objects when they’re adults, ESPECIALLY boys.

The one thing I would say to Maggie, ditch the stroller and get a sling. They’re cheaper and babies usually prefer to be held close to Mommy.

Women have babies and produce milk for them I dont have kids but when I do I will not deny my baby where ever we may be because of some idiot who thinks breasts are made only for sex. I think Id cover up more but have you ever tried to control a hungry 8 month old? Yeah you’re luck only her breast was out!

Love it. I applaud her for using her breasts as they were designed. So she showed a bit more skin than usual, or than I probably did when nursing. Maybe it was a slip-up, or the photos were snapped in 2 seconds before she pulled her jacket over. But it’s not as though she *took off her entire top* to nurse her baby.

I’m happy to see so many people supporting breastfeeding in the comments here! What she’s doing is perfectly fine IMO, and not a big deal. I think the angle of the photo is in a position to show more breast than most people around her could actually see. Anyone disgusted by this is weird–if this is gross to see then watching a baby eat from a bottle should gross you out too (it’s the same thing, a baby eating). Comparing a baby eating to going to the bathroom is weird too–compare a baby eating to any other baby mammal eating. I guess watching them eat should gross you out as well. Oh, c’mon. Women have been breastfeeding since time began. Before this decade, and maybe the last one, mothers miraculously found a way to nurture their babies in a preferred private manner.

While I can’t imagine anyone finding fault with a mother nursing her baby, I do know that some would find it uncomfortable to be present.

While some may want to believe that previous generations in our culture were too rigid, uptight, about what they expected from society, like it or not, they have earned a respect which the present generations have thrown away.

Now we have legalized abortion, hate crime laws, political correctness Nazis, bans on religion, 50+% divorce rate, an unconsciounable number of children living in fatherless homes, and plenty of other mistakes which are directed toward the destruction of America.

Maybe we need to go back and take some wisdom from those who preceded us.

I don’t think it’s inappropriate that she is breast feeding her daughter, that’s what they’re there for! I think it’s wrong that some ******* snapped pictures of it and I think it’s wrong that you posted these pictures!

Pamela Anderson shows just as much or more in public places with those giant silicon things made so guys can wack-off! This child is getting what it needs to live! It is what breasts are made for! and sorry guys but those are what real breast look like! Dudes pkg’s and butt cracks are always hanging out and know one complaines! Is a mom supposed to stay at home all the time if she brst feeds? My baby had a intestinal defect and the ONLY thing he could digest for a yr and a half was brst milk. So I was supposed to stay home,never go out and develop Post Partum Depression? Bunch of hypocrates, all of you! Your child is going to be so haelthy and smart she will run circles around the children of the drones who left neg comments here. There are starving,abused, homeless children that could use someone to speak up for them, why not take all your negative and useless energy and use it for good? Papparazzi PISS-OFF! Breastfeeding phobias are YOUR issue. A mom who chooses to nurse in public should be left alone and allowed to feed her baby however she chooses. If I came up to you while you were feeding your child a bottle of formula and told you all about how you were feeding your child the second best thing and how that made you a bad mother would you feel poorly?? That happens frequenlty to moms even when nursing discreetly. They are told to “do that somewhere else” and “Just give them a bottle already”. I ask that however moms choose to feed their kids respect that it is the best choice for their family and they don’t need your opinion. If you are uncomfortable with it maybe you should go eat your lunch in the bathroom. Instead of the poor baby being forced to.
