Mission of CFR

Its mission is promoting understanding of foreign policy and America’s role in the world. Meetings are convened at which government officials, global leaders and prominent members debate major foreign-policy issues. It has “a think tank” that employs prominent scholars in international affairs and it commissions subsequent books and reports. Brad Pitt, whaddya so scared of, boyfriend? I pose this question in response to a recent request straight from Brad himself.
See, I was all set to watch Papa Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damon dip their digits in cement at their hand- and footprint ceremony at Grauman’s and cover the star-studded Ocean’s Thirteen premiere Wednesday. I’d set it up with publicists a week before the actual event.
But then, on the very day of the aforementioned to-dos, a last-minute email arrived in my inbox, informing moi that E! Online wasn’t approved to cover either event by Brad. I thought maybe he read my little prediction that Angie was gonna eventually dump his primo butt, and he had gotten his feathered hairdo all ruffled, as a result.

However, it seems Brad didn’t just bitchily blackball the Awful Truth. “All weekly ‘tabloid’ magazines and gossip reporters were kept out,” dishes an in-the-know Biz type.
If everything is all rainbows and butterflies with Angie and the rest of the Jolie-Pitt bunch, as the beyond-gorgeous duo claims is the case, what’s B. so damn worried about? He should take a page out of Angie’s publicist-free book already and stop caring (and trying to control) what gets said. Won’t work, dude. Evah.Other boo-hoo biz: The big-toothed breeders didn’t stay for the screening of the movie or hit the after-party—which Ocean’s costars George, Matt and Ellen Barkin actually did stick around for.

It’s not NEW either. Brad has not allowed tabloids into press conferenaces before either. I think it’s funny. I don’t think he cares so much as he’s not going to let the people who spread things about him and his family make a buck off him. Brad also only stayed in Vegas for a few minutes before going back to LA, so that’s nothing new either.

So the reason Peacreast wasn’t at the rc is because Brad had him banned? But tonight E showed their delayed rc show with Sal and Guilani D. as hosts. Brad did a brief interview with her, and Angie smiled and said little. If there was a ban how come these two?

dina#1, may be it wasn’t E that was banned by just Peecrust. And why not, if you think about it. Why exclude the entire show, just ban the one guy whom you really don’t want to talk to. Brad and the O13 gang gets the publicity. Only Peecrust is the loser.

I read an article about how none of these guys, Brad, George Matt etc got to where they are today just by luck. There are plenty of good looking people out there. Consider for example, this Paul guy whom Jennifer is sort of not dating. Many people in the Jen and Paul thread think he is better looking than Brad. I have no problems with that opinion, after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. After all, I think, Ben Affleck is better looking than Matt Damon and David Beckham, is as good looking at Brad. But, so what? Looks on their own, does open the door, but after that??? It doesn’t get you very far.

To use Bill Clinton’s phrase: “its the WHOLE PACKAGE, STUPID”. And Brad, I think is a very clued up smart guy.

if Brad did indeed instigate the bans on various people, he is changing the tenor of the media game. Others may have done so before, I don’t know. But Brad is so big that what ever he does is public. So if he bans someone, it makes the news. It could turn some people off (sort of like people thinking he’s getting to big for his britches). So, what Brad might be in banning certain shows or certain people, does carry risk for him personally. But, I’m confident that Brad can pull it off. He probably has his Plan B (and C and D) in place for if things go wrong to plan A.

Thank you well said. Angie said that Brad is the type of person who thinks things through before he does anything. I agree he has probably thought this through and has his ducks all in a row. I wasn’t wishing for Peacreast. I am just trying to understand what is happening? I hadn’t seen anything about Ted C., I mean what was happening to him, and why? Then I read a post stating that peacreast wouldn’t be on the rc and I was just trying to find out why. Can’t stand him, can’t stand him.

I am just too happy for BAMPZS. Angie is a truly good role model and an example of someone turning their life around for good and service. Truly the tabs won’t be able to find anything bad about her appointment. Maybe this will shut them up for awhile. Brad loves this woman and shows it the way he feels comfortable doing so. He said in an interview that his family didn’t show each other a lot of emotion. I think he is very open and demonstrative about his feelings. These people do things their way. Peace.

Excuse me to #166- my response was factual regarding who nominated Angie. I am a big fan of Angie and I don’t think that Trevor Nelson nominating her detracts from the achievement of being accepted in CFR. When Angie did her first interview with AC, LK was miffed. He felt he should have gotten it.

A hater on one of the others threads said that when Angie was on Dateline the ratings numbers were low. If I remember correctly her interview was opposite the finale of Lost. GMAB Lost finale? NBC was stupid to schedule it opposite Lost in the first place. Peace and good night. :)

aiya-luv-angie and josephina’s posts (others of similar inspiration), great they were as they speak for me as well. Angelina really inspires me to look at my life and give me strength to be a better person. To do something with my life that I thought couldn’t be possible before. She gives me strength to change. How often are we confine to what we do because when we try to change career or jobs, it seems so hard. For her to build that transition from being “just an actress” to a humanitarian and activist taken seriously by world leaders is just an inspiration to me.

I know this is conspiracy theory, but I just hope Huvane didn’t get wind of Angelina’s admittance into the Council and set up this stupid Jen’s dating life expose thing just to take away the significance/press coverage of Angelina’s accomplishments. Gosh, that thought just gets me so upset! I’m so glad there is Angelina as a role model to contrast the likes of Hilton, etc. Women are smart and can change the world. They bring a different perspective to the table that we just can’t expect men to champion or do it for us. Why sell this image that women are just dumb f@cks only good for one thing? That’s what Angelina is not into. She is concern about how she comes across for other young women. This is how I came to take notice of her. I read one of her articles written by a guy writer for GQ/Vogue? I don’t remember that detail, but he wrote such a detailed article that really portray the true Angelina. This was when she started getting exposure due to her early movies. He observed how she had a hard time speaking in full sentences, that she spoke midway, changes her thought until she got it right. One might think she was slow, but it was also she was editing her sentences in real time out loud. I think she’s gone a long way to practicing her public speaking skills. In addition, he talked about what was bothering her most was her conflict as an actress, as a public person, and her concern about how other young girls see her. She wanted them to have a healthy image of a woman’s body and of themselves. She had a hard time at photoshoots because the photographers/magazines were trying to put her in these skimpy bikines, barely there clothes. She didn’t want to bare her body like that in a photoshoot. She was conscience of her responsiblity as a role model, as a public person. So for those stories during her last Vogue shoot about how she was picky and all, I wouldn’t be surprise if that’s because she didn’t want to be exposing her body just for the sake of exposing her body. If you noticed, she doesn’t try to flash her books, etc. and her layouts. It’s usually about her eyes, her mouth,her hands, her legs, about how she uses them to convey a message. Very much like modern dancing. Anyway, I’m not trying to make her like a god, but I am saying that she isn’t out to just sell her sole and make money. There is the business machine, and then there is her conscience and responsibility. That’s what makes her more normal than a lot of people in Hollywood. She’s willing to say no, no to a publicist, no when she doesn’t like the clothes, no to stupid lines in scripts that makes women look stupid. This makes her a smart, strong, confident and mature. She’s developing into such a beautiful woman, beautiful person. No she’s not unique, but she does represent all the other normal women out there, that it’s okay to be smart, confident, and caring for others. She’s more normal than other Hollywood ladies who “portrays” themselves as the American sweetheart.

Angie.. I’m so proud to hear of your accomplishments.. so completely generous, kind.. I am thankful for her ability to promote this world change. People are listening to her! She is making a HUGE difference! There is no denying the fact that her power in those global efforts cause significant shifts in public opinion and education of mainstream America and other fortunate countries. What an HONOR to be remembered for being such a positive force in the world! Girl, you rock!!!!

My own children grow to see this beautiful public figure actually cares and empathizes with poverty and disease, and I can tell you that her life will be remembered in Global History for centuries. The actions she takes on behalf of those who have no choice are what will be remembered forever.

Angie, you give me the emotional strength to carry on in teaching children in poverty here on the border of third world nations. There are some who see you as only rich glamorous woman, but I see you as a savior for those who need the world to see them. Justice for Darfur

BAHAI, Chad — Here, at this refugee camp on the border of Sudan, nothing separates us from Darfur but a small stretch of desert and a line on a map. All the same, it’s a line I can’t cross. As a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, I have traveled into Darfur before, and I had hoped to return. But the UNHCR has told me that this camp, Oure Cassoni, is as close as I can get.

Sticking to this side of the Sudanese border is supposed to keep me safe. By every measure — killings, rapes, the burning and looting of villages — the violence in Darfur has increased since my last visit, in 2004. The death toll has passed 200,000; in four years of fighting, Janjaweed militia members have driven 2.5 million people from their homes, including the 26,000 refugees crowded into Oure Cassoni.

Attacks on aid workers are rising, another reason I was told to stay out of Darfur. By drawing attention to their heroic work — their efforts to keep refugees alive, to keep camps like this one from being consumed by chaos and fear — I would put them at greater risk.

I’ve seen how aid workers and nongovernmental organizations make a difference to people struggling for survival. I can see on workers’ faces the toll their efforts have taken. Sitting among them, I’m amazed by their bravery and resilience. But humanitarian relief alone will never be enough.

Until the killers and their sponsors are prosecuted and punished, violence will continue on a massive scale. Ending it may well require military action. But accountability can also come from international tribunals, measuring the perpetrators against international standards of justice.

Accountability is a powerful force. It has the potential to change behavior — to check aggression by those who are used to acting with impunity. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), has said that genocide is not a crime of passion; it is a calculated offense. He’s right. When crimes against humanity are punished consistently and severely, the killers’ calculus will change.

On Monday I asked a group of refugees about their needs. Better tents, said one; better access to medical facilities, said another. Then a teenage boy raised his hand and said, with powerful simplicity, “Nous voulons une épreuve.” We want a trial. He is why I am encouraged by the ICC’s announcement yesterday that it will prosecute a former Sudanese minister of state and a Janjaweed leader on charges of crimes against humanity.

Some critics of the ICC have said indictments could make the situation worse. The threat of prosecution gives the accused a reason to keep fighting, they argue. Sudanese officials have echoed this argument, saying that the ICC’s involvement, and the implication of their own eventual prosecution, is why they have refused to allow U.N. peacekeepers into Darfur.

It is not clear, though, why we should take Khartoum at its word. And the notion that the threat of ICC indictments has somehow exacerbated the problem doesn’t make sense, given the history of the conflict. Khartoum’s claims aside, would we in America ever accept the logic that we shouldn’t prosecute murderers because the threat of prosecution might provoke them to continue killing?

When I was in Chad in June 2004, refugees told me about systematic attacks on their villages. It was estimated then that more than 1,000 people were dying each week.

In October 2004 I visited West Darfur, where I heard horrific stories, including accounts of gang-rapes of mothers and their children. By that time, the UNHCR estimated, 1.6 million people had been displaced in the three provinces of Darfur and 200,000 others had fled to Chad.

It wasn’t until June 2005 that the ICC began to investigate. By then the campaign of violence was well underway.

As the prosecutions unfold, I hope the international community will intervene, right away, to protect the people of Darfur and prevent further violence. The refugees don’t need more resolutions or statements of concern. They need follow-through on past promises of action.

There has been a groundswell of public support for action. People may disagree on how to intervene — airstrikes, sending troops, sanctions, divestment — but we all should agree that the slaughter must be stopped and the perpetrators brought to justice.

In my five years with UNHCR, I have visited more than 20 refugee camps in Sierra Leone, Congo, Kosovo and elsewhere. I have met families uprooted by conflict and lobbied governments to help them. Years later, I have found myself at the same camps, hearing the same stories and seeing the same lack of clean water, medicine, security and hope.

It has become clear to me that there will be no enduring peace without justice. History shows that there will be another Darfur, another exodus, in a vicious cycle of bloodshed and retribution. But an international court finally exists. It will be as strong as the support we give it. This might be the moment we stop the cycle of violence and end our tolerance for crimes against humanity.

What the worst people in the world fear most is justice. That’s what we should deliver.
