Angelina Jolie: Pimp My Picture, Not My Life!

Angelina Jolie tried to keep things focused during Wednesday night’s NY premiere of A Mighty Heart. Media outlets were required to sign contracts before talking to Jolie (as drawn up by her Hollywood lawyer Robert Offer).

Here were the contract terms for interviewing:

  • No questions regarding her personal relationships
  • In the event Interviewer does ask Ms. Jolie any questions regarding her personal relationships, Ms. Jolie will have the right to immediately terminate the interview and leave
  • The interview may only be used to promote the Picture. In no event may Interviewer or Media Outlet be entitled to run all or any portion of the interview in connection with any other story
  • The interview will not be used in a manner that is disparaging, demeaning, or derogatory to Ms. Jolie
  • The tape of the interview will not be released to Interviewer if any of the aforementioned things happened

One reporter from a major outlet said, “I wouldn’t sign it. Who does she think she is?”

FOX News reports that USA Today, the Associated Press and other media outlets canceled their interviews with Jolie. When she heard the reaction, Jolie scrapped all print interviews.

Hey Angelina, JustJared.com would have interviewed you!!

I read a article about on the ABC News website and the comments support Angie 95%. They all felt that her personal life is “her personal life” and that the article was the media whinning like a child having a temper tantrum. One writer said just because we have the right to a free press does not mean that the press can trespass into someone’s personal life. The commentors continue to say that the questions should be directed toward the movie and not Angie’s personal life. I am sure she is just fed up with it. Anything she wants to share about her personal life, she will share freely in interviews like Parade, Esquire etc. But now the focus needs to be on “AMH”.
Right on Angie!

Hello to all!

Not sure if anyone added this to the argument but since as usual I am a day late and dollar short I will still add my 2 cents…

When I first heard what the press was saying…(I can’t access JJ from work “Hey Jared I am going through withdrawals!) anyway as I was saying. The first thought to run through my head was, how awkward it would be talking about your family with MP right there! This movie is HER story. The questions should really center around her life and how the book and movie came to be. I think B&A wanted to respect her enough and not answer questions that would have them gushing about their family when there sits MP with a family that has been irreparably altered.

I have a friend who lost her daughter and 2 grandchildren in an accident and I noticed in myself the need to not boast and brag around her about my children and grandchildren. It has been years and we are very good friends but there is a compassionate side to me that holds back on those things around her. It’s because I respect and care about her loss and her feelings.

Just my 2 cents.

Happy belated b-day AG! (As I said, I am always a day late and a dollar short, hence just having 2 cents to contribute)

i guess she did the right thing coz now she knows which media outlets are most interested in her personal life rather than to take her work seriously..that is one confirmed would be Foxnews!..aren’t they the one who address angie as brad’s wife?i dunno..sorry if it’s not…but point is if you don’t have any guilty concious on the terms layed down…there shouldn’t be any problem for them to sign, right?
the lawyer gave them the options, they’ve made their choice and they retaliate in a juvenile manner.
be professional ‘journalists’..freedom of journalism comes with responsibilities and obviously those in FOX are not aware of the principals of pure journalism!
i guess what angie doesn’t want that night is to have tabs..she wants it to be more REAL NEWS oriented press conference!

“Hey Angelina, JustJared.com would have interviewed you!!”

No kidding! This column kisses her ass every chance they get. I’d like to see a little (or a lot) less about Brangelina. And I posted it here because it seems relevant.

Alexanderina @ 06/14/2007 at 8:58 pm

I hope this is the correct thread.

Thanks Jared for all the new threads.

LK is almost on, can’t wait

Oh so after she tells the whole world countless things about her life with her children and Brad, now all of a sudden she changes her mind about that? Puhhhleassse!!! I was going to go watch this movie, but now I’m don’t care to watch it! Talk about censorship! She of all people should know what that is! And for her to ban Foxnews and its affiliates on the red carpet to cover this movie premier….how childish! Really, who does she think she is? I thought she was “miss open-minded and tolerance”…I guess that only counts if you’re a liberal. Her true colors are starting to show.

Can someone please put it up on the internet for the overseas fans! Pretty please?

LOVE ANGELINA @ 06/14/2007 at 9:16 pm

I HATE THAT PEOPLE PICK ON HER SOOOOOOO MUCH. I HATE THAT. THIS COMES FROM WOMEN WHO HATE WOMEN, WE HAVE GOT STOP THAT. ANGELINA DOES AMAZING THINGS, I ALSO DON’T BELIEVE FOR A SECOND SHE DID ANYTHING TO END BRAD’S RELATIONSHIP. ANGELINA DOESN’T LIE AND SHE CAN WITHHOLD WHATEVER SHE WANTS. I HAPPY I GET TO SEE SUCH A STRONG WOMAN IN DAY AND AGE WHERE ALL THE WOMEN TODAY ARE WHORES FOR MONEY. GOOD FOR MEN, BAD FOR LITTLE GIRLS LOOKING FOR GUIDENCE TODAY.

Great interview with LK.

Just my opinion…The point that I feel everyone is missing is that Angelina has always stressed the importance to appeal to all people, regardless of politics, to help support the many causes she feels are important. I completely agree with this and love her because of it. This applies to her UN work and should also stand for this very important movie. Because of this, I think she made the wrong decision here. Regardless of how you or she feels about Fox, CNN or any other channel or paper, she must appeal to ALL to help with these important causes and to hear the important message of Marianne Pearle. Unfortunately, Angelina missed a BIG opportunity here.

Secondly, I work for a newspaper and no one in a news organization would sign this type of agreement. Magazines such as Esquire or People are not news oriented and work out those details months in advance. Perhaps she thought it would only be entertainment writers that were at the premier, but I think she also draws political and/or world events writers too. The topic of this movie and Angelina herself have captivated so many. I hope that everyone will put all of this aside and go see the movie. She is wonderful in the movie and Marianne is a super woman!

“AMH is NOT about “freedom of the press”. If you think that’s what it is about, you have totally misssed the message.”
I was going to post the same OC…you are right on. Saying that AMH is about freedom of the press is superficial, it is much more complicated than that.

good 4 her 4 not trying to expose the fox outfit for the neo-con charlatans that they are.
news, right. like old soviet stations were news, just like that. nothing but neo-con, one-sided propaganda.

go jolie. maybe call it like it is in the middle east too.

What a laughing stock LOL
Glad to see she got put in her place!!

The principle here is that Angelina was trying to tell the press what they can and can’t do, and there’s no way the press is going to tolerate that.

It doesn’t matter what the specific topics were that she wanted to ban, what matters is that she was trying to set the rules.

If the shoe were on the other foot, how do you think Angelina would react to a reporter telling her how to act in a movie?

It’s the reporter’s job to decide what the interview is about. The reporter asks the questions, not the interviewee.

A Certain Smile @ 06/14/2007 at 11:52 pm

the principle here is that they are human beings and regardless of how they make a living they do have the right to keep certain things to themselves. they wanted the focus on the movie and not their personal lives. This was not politics. This woman is villified no matter what. when she refused to answer questions by the twit from E at the GG she was criticized by the same people who are now saying all she has to do is no comment or refuse to answer.

I know it’s been said a thousand times, If you don’t like her then don’t come to these columnns. Jared has plenty of other articles.

#133 Robert Antigone
#134 Mmmm (you just need to STFU…we all know how stupid you are..)
#146 TS
#147 Joey…hypocrites you say…….

What a bunch of hypocrites. I am referring to the Fox channel and those who are calling for “Freedom of the Press” backlash? Please get a clue…..

First, let us get one thing clear Daniel Pearl may have been a journalist but the whole point of the book and the movie is not about “Freedom of the Press.” The book tells a story of a pregnant wife looking for her husband and of his “disappearance and death.” As a journalist herself Marianne was very critical of the “legit” news media and the way they portrayed his disappearance and death. [Did you read the book?]

Second, Fox news is “outraged?” Over what, exactly? Their tag line is “freedom is not free.” Which goes to show you that they don’t believe in any form of civil liberties and freedoms.

Third, this was the same news organizations and forums who are afraid to criticize the Bush administration…no disparaging of the President and his manufacturing of the war in Iraq. Please…get some common sense people…

They are not the first “celebrities” to make such a request. Given the film subject matter it is appropriate that they would limit the questions being asked.

Bravo Angie & Brad for changing the focus on what the movie is about than on their personal lives….I applaud them for that. Backlash my a**, only in your dreams.

Longtime Fan/Lurker @ 06/15/2007 at 12:36 am

Freedom of the press is defined as, “the guarantee by a government of free public press for its citizens and their associations, extended to members of news gathering organizations, and their published reporting. It also extends to news gathering, and processes involved in obtaining information for public distribution”. That definition does not mean that Angelina Jolie, or anyone else for that matter, is required to grant interviews, cannot set controls on interview or has to answer a question just because a reporter has asked it. This article comes across as a juvenile temper tantrum by media advised that that they would be expected to respect boundaries. If the media representatives don’t like it, don’t cover the story. But don’t write an article misrepresenting “freedom of the press” to meet your own needs.

No matter what she does, she will not get from under this constant judging. Do you think it will break her?
*******************************************

Absolutely not. Why should it? She is never going to win over the Jenhags and she has no interest in doing so. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff, and in her POV they are very small stuff. Acting is her career but it isn’t her whole life. She’s way past that whole fake HW environment. She’s concentrating on the bigger picture: her family, her humanitarian activities and educating herself about world affairs. She has far too much sense to let the haters get to her.

#262:
No, Jane, it’s you who doesn’t get it. To put it simply, telling the reporters to mind their effing business regarding her private life in now way compromises the integrity of the First Amendment.

315 Jane | 06/14/2007 at 11:25 pm
It’s the reporter’s job to decide what the interview is about. The reporter asks the questions, not the interviewee.
***************************************

The reporter may have a right to ask whatever he wants, but the interviewee has a right not to answer. If I was about to be interviewed and didn’t want my personal life pried into, I’d put the reporter on notice from the get-go that I will discuss some topics but my personal life is off limits, and the minute he tries to go there, the interview is over. If the reporter decides he doesn’t want to accept those terms and cancels the interview, that’s his choice. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it, and I doubt Angelina loses sleep over anything that gets printed about her.

As far as a “backlash” is concerned, Angelina has been living with that for the past two and a half years, ever since Brad dumped Jen’s ass. It hasn’t slowed her down any. She lives her life and doesn’t care what the media or the Jenhags like you think. I say more power to her.

it’s amazing how people will make such a big of a deal with anything she does… WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS ??? well, for the reporter who asked that, she’s just the reason why you’re on that event, honey… let’s not forget that, ok ??? this action was supposed to be her way of helping the movie getting the right attention but people who are obviously too dumb to understand reacted in a wrong way and called her names again… hellloooo !!! this MIGHTY BIG HEAD apparently can tick you in a heart beat huh ??? that even small stuff about her will be as huge ( or even more ) as the death of princess Di… grow up people !!! if you think she really doesn’t deserve acting that way, then stop harrasing her and her family like hungry voltures !!! leave them alone and trust me, you wouldn’t get a single requirement from her…

Alexkziel @ 06/15/2007 at 9:48 pm

And WHAT do you expect after all the c r a p against Angie?

Good for you Angie, i support you with this decision.
