Angelina Jolie: Pimp My Picture, Not My Life!

Angelina Jolie: Pimp My Picture, Not My Life!

Angelina Jolie tried to keep things focused during Wednesday night’s NY premiere of A Mighty Heart. Media outlets were required to sign contracts before talking to Jolie (as drawn up by her Hollywood lawyer Robert Offer).

Here were the contract terms for interviewing:

  • No questions regarding her personal relationships
  • In the event Interviewer does ask Ms. Jolie any questions regarding her personal relationships, Ms. Jolie will have the right to immediately terminate the interview and leave
  • The interview may only be used to promote the Picture. In no event may Interviewer or Media Outlet be entitled to run all or any portion of the interview in connection with any other story
  • The interview will not be used in a manner that is disparaging, demeaning, or derogatory to Ms. Jolie
  • The tape of the interview will not be released to Interviewer if any of the aforementioned things happened

One reporter from a major outlet said, “I wouldn’t sign it. Who does she think she is?”

FOX News reports that USA Today, the Associated Press and other media outlets canceled their interviews with Jolie. When she heard the reaction, Jolie scrapped all print interviews.

Hey Angelina, JustJared.com would have interviewed you!!

Just seems to me that she talks about getting naked in the bath and that Shiloh is a blob and blah blah blah, why the sudden change of heart? Freedom of the press, my ****!!!

Technically chez, there is no such thing as “freedom of the press”…you are confusing it with “freedom of speech” which AJ is exercising her right not to express. The “press” is often excluded from access to many things other than what is deemed public access…that is why it is referred to as “public access”. The press does not have any more authority to obtain information than the private individual and does not have the “right” to infringe upon individual’s privacy, government classified material, medical records, bank records, adoption records or corporate information, etc unless it has been granted. AJ is not granting access, which is her right. AJ is correct in having the press sign contracts; this is not uncommon with celebrities. Her reasoning as many of the more shallow posters fail to understand is
1. She did give personal interviews about her family life under controlled circumstances, so why would she give out more on the red carpet…that is only logical. Most individuals set a limit about their personal lives and she is no different.
2. Her job is not to promote her personal life and herself but to promote the movie. She also believes in AMH and does not want to deter from Marianne Pearl and Daniel Pearl, the reason the movie was made. She is true to her loyalties, which the critics would not understand because they don’t value the spirit of “loyalty”.
3. Why would anyone give out a free for all interview about their personal life when the “press” distorts it and lies in order to sell their newspapers and magazines FOR MONEY? That is a rhetorical question for those who just don’t get it.
4. The tabloid press and photographers make more than a satisfactory income off her and her personal life…that is why the “who does she think she is” comment is so irrelevant and inappropriate…of course she knows the power she has and power allows her to request the press sign contracts. The hubris of the press and photographers are showing their true nature…if they were smart, they’d sign, get the scoop, make tons of money…people can be very stupid because of their egos. The question is to the press “who in the hell do they think they are?” they are nobodies whose income, recognition and jobs are dependent on celebrities like AJ and BP. That comment by the press was insulting to them because they don’t know their “place” in the hierarchy of influence. AJ knows exactly where her place is and she uses it very wisely for the benefit of her friends like M. Pearl and for the programs she wants to influence others to get involved in…her critics will never grasp the simplicity of her motives because they are like the press…indignant about nothing and fail to have overall perspective.

tita tota @ 06/14/2007 at 2:20 pm

who really cares……..? I guess the brangaloonis do

So, the media is mad? So mad that they make sure to tell the world that they are mad at Angelina Jolie. Angelina Jolie trying to control them. Who does Angelina Jolie think she is? Angelina Jolie this. Angelina Jolie that. They all damn well know the more they mention her name, the more readers/viewers/listeners they will attract. The media will take any news from Angelina, good or bad. If they can’t get the good, they’ll spin the bad. All she’s doing is to make it a bit more difficult for the leeches. I personally think it’s brilliant!

Don't insult others @ 06/14/2007 at 2:27 pm

Jared - do you understand “Freedom of the Press”. You have just made yourself out to be an ignorant fool. Don’t you want to reword your post. Take a hint from Perez.

Jared understands prefectly well what “Freedom of the Press” is. Do you understand what “Freedom to decline answering irrelevant questions” is ? A deal works both ways, if the media cannot honour its part then there is no deal. It’s very democratic so don’t ***** too much you are making yourself out to be the ignorant fool. I think I’ll spell it out - You are an ignorant fool.

Glosslip Defends Angelina

Glosslip has a reputation for being a harsh critic of the Brangelina whitewash campaign ever since Angie seemed to swoop in and destroy Brad Pitt’s first marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston. Before Angelina Jolie became the patron saint of orphaned children, and in doing so, revamping her “wanton hussy manstealer” image, she was often the punchline for many a gossip joke: makes out with her brother, wears a vial of blood around her neck, ambiguous sexual orientation, homewrecker, has intercourse en route to red carpet events — you know — a real loose cannon as it were. But that’s ancient history. And today is a real first here at Glosslip, for today we who have never defended Angelina Jolie, are now taking a stand in her defense.

A report from Fox News is slamming the actress’ actions at her latest film premier for A Might Heart, a film based on the life, abduction and murder of The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl as written by his widow Marianne Pearl.

Angelina is being accused of suppressing the media and making outrageous demands of any reporters or news agencies wishing to speak to her about anything related to her “personal relationships.” Those who wish to interview her must sign agreements based on her terms and any deviation from those agreements can lead to a lawsuits filed by Jolie. Here are some of the details from the FOX report:

Ironically, Wednesday night’s premiere of the excellent Michael Winterbottom-directed film was meant to support an organization called Reporters Without Borders. Jolie, however, did everything she could to clamp down on the press and control it.

Reporters from most major media outlets balked Wednesday when they were presented with an agreement drawn up by Jolie’s Hollywood lawyer Robert Offer. The contract closely dictated the terms of all interviews.

Reporters were asked to agree to “not ask Ms. Jolie any questions regarding her personal relationships. In the event Interviewer does ask Ms. Jolie any questions regarding her personal relationships, Ms. Jolie will have the right to immediately terminate the interview and leave.”

The agreement also required that “the interview may only be used to promote the Picture. In no event may Interviewer or Media Outlet be entitled to run all or any portion of the interview in connection with any other story. … The interview will not be used in a manner that is disparaging, demeaning, or derogatory to Ms. Jolie.”

If that wasn’t enough, Jolie also requires that if any of these things happen, “the tape of the interview will not be released to Interviewer.” Such a violation, the signatory thus agrees, would “cause Jolie irreparable harm” and make it possible for her to sue the interviewer and seek a restraining order.

Wow, that’s some pretty harsh and extreme measures for a person who is attempting to promote a film about journalists as heroes. But before you get all up in arms at Angie, let’s look over some important details about this story.

First of all, this is Fox News. Fox is the most conservative, “right wing and proud of it” major news agency out there. Where most media outlets attempt to project a “fair and balanced” reporting of current events, Fox basically admits that they do all their news with a slant, a right slant. In the last eight years since the Bush administration has been controlling this country, Fox has run rough-shod over any story that didn’t favor the Republicans. They are a shoot first, ask questions later. Really, when you boil it down, Fox is the reason why our media has gone from merely reporting the news, to actually editorializing it. All other agencies have had to follow suit. If you ask me, this is what Dan Rather meant when he was talking about “dumbing down” and “tarting up” the news.

Back on topic, the real reason Fox is slamming Jolie is because she outright BANNED their asses from this premier and well, let’s face it, instead of facing adversity with dignity and some self-respect, Fox News just did what Fox News does best, slings mud and hurl invectives. Please read the quotes from the same article below, but now with the benefit of knowing the intentions of this Fox writer :

So much for reporters without borders.

That’s not all: Jolie told Paramount Pictures publicists to ban FOX News Channel and all FOX News affiliates from covering the “Mighty Heart” premiere on the red carpet. It was only with the intervention of mortified Paramount staff that an FNC camera crew was allowed to be present.

Apparently, no one told Jolie of the highly positive review FOX News had given “A Mighty Heart” from Cannes.

Jolie is famous by now for directing press and selling rights to her photos. She has long been in business with People magazine, orchestrating photo shoots of her children. The money, she says, goes to charity.

This column reported a year ago, on June 8, 2006, about how Jolie and Pitt were responsible for the expulsion of journalists in Namibia where the couple went to have their child, Shiloh. Their bodyguards regularly got into fights with local photographers hoping to make some money from the couple’s colonial residency in their country.

After Shiloh was born, Jolie and Pitt gave a news conference, but limited it only to Namibian journalists. No reporters from neighboring countries were allowed.

The couple sat on the dais with Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s first president, aka dictator, who ruled for 15 years.

In 2002, Nujoma abruptly appointed himself minister of information and broadcasting. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Nujoma has routinely attacked reporters from his country calling them “unpatriotic” and “the enemy.”

During the time Pitt and Jolie were in the country, a former photographer for the Namibian, the daily newspaper, was arrested twice for trying to get a picture of the couple.

South African John Liebenberg was arrested on municipal property during the Jolie-Pitt stay and pronounced guilty of trespassing. His passport and camera equipment were confiscated as well.

Treatment of the press is so bad in Namibia, in fact, that an organization called the National Society for Human Rights was formed several years ago to protect reporters’ rights.

The NSHR, which is usually busy with more important matters, issued a statement on April 24 strongly condemning the deportation of foreign journalists from Namibia who wanted to cover the Pitt-Jolie visit.

“As the principal human rights monitoring and advocacy organization in this country, we strongly repudiate this unprecedented and blatant violation of the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech and expression, which includes freedom of the press and other media,” the statement read.

It’s a little unclear how Mariane Pearl, whom Jolie plays in “A Mighty Heart,” feels about her portrayer’s position on freedom of press for some, but not all. On Wednesday, I spoke to Jeff Julliard, the editorial director of Reporters Without Borders in Paris.

“Paparazzi should be allowed to do their job,” he said, adding that he condemned Jolie’s banning of FOX News and actions taken on her behalf in Namibia.

Note the slanted bent in this story. It’s all about how Fox was maligned, even though they said “nice things” about the film. Woe is Fox News, banned from a movie premier. We had our wittle feelings hurt. Whatevs. This is celebrity news, the stuff of make believe. This isn’t hard hitting news, you weren’t out to make your journalism professor proud, you were out to make a quick buck and had the door slammed in your face.

Anyone with a modicum of cultural awareness would have noticed that Angelina Jolie has done numerous interviews in recent months were she has spoken EXTENSIVELY about her personal life and her relationship with Brad Pitt. Just last month in Cannes, at the world premier A Mighty Heart, Jolie was slammed for turning the interviews into stories about her and her life rather than the film. Now, merely a month later she is getting beaten up for insisting the press focus on the film rather than her bedroom antics or adoptive practices.

Cripes, she can’t win. I feel very weird defending Angelina Jolie. I am not sure how I feel about her at this point. I am not even sure of my political views at this stage in game. But I know slanted journalism when I read it, and that sh*t ain’t cool.

If your motto is “We Report, You Decide” like Fox News boasts, then by all means, let me decide. Otherwise it’s not the news, it’s your opinion.

And if I wanted an opinion about a news story I’d read a blog, not some jackholes pretending to be a “legitimate news outlet.

204 Passing Through | 06/14/2007 at 1:59 pm

. . . At this point if Angie refuses to answer personal questions ever again, then the media only have themselves to blame. All she asked was ONE interview without personal questions or using her comments to spin a negative story.
********************************************

Passing Through, i was just about to write the same thing! In fact, you could see from her most recent magazine interviews (RD, Marie Claire, Esquire etc.)where she said “I have been too outspoken” (in the past)and when we contrast that with her saying that Brad’s way is different…..that he is more private, i told myself that she was heading in the direction of being less outspoken about herself and her life.

If so, then i totally applaud her. We do not deserve her honesty, it seems to me, and i for one, tho i would love to hear her continue to speak as she has always done, i welcome her new attitude now.

In fact, from her Vogue interview a year or so ago, when she told the interviewer that she was hesitant about speaking about her private life, because there were other people in her life now that she had to consider, i got the feeling that she was going to have to be more and more cautious, now that she was a woman with a family. And so said, so done. Here we are now, the family has grown, and so has the focus on them, so the best thing is not to give people a free pass into your private life. more power to them!

first and last post @ 06/14/2007 at 2:32 pm

PS I neglected to note that AJ “may” have signed a contract with RD, Esquire, Marie Claire where she is not allowed over a designated period of time to talk about her personal life other than through those interviews…hence potentially hurting the sales of those magazines which are all due out at this time. If she nonchalantly made comments on the red carpet, she then would be in violation of those contracts.

Angie is damn if she does and damn if she doesn’t!!!!! The tabs will have a field day with this!! Get ready troops for some negative campaign! Of course, they will find something negative anyway. I’m glas she did something! She is probably tired of the focus being on her personal life rather then her work. She knows which media source to go to that are reputable! I email a question to Larry King for her tonight! I hope they choose it! I’m sure she got a bunch. Can’t wait! I love this family and I know they want their privacy, but the only way we can see them is with premier etc and the paparaz! They are a great family, people and actors!!
The reason that Z probably had the blanket over her head was due to the cameras and flashes! Maybe it was getting a little too much for her. I think it is wonderful that they are going to see some of the sights of the city!

I am a little bit confused…we have just been hearing about all of the interviews where she talks about her family and brad and her in talking in the nude..what changed all that?

******

I agree this is right on.
And the fact that she put on makeup to look like
a black/mixed race person, just takes away credibilty from Angelina.

She seems two-faced and will justify whatever makes her look good. Not a clear thinker.

Good for you Angie! It’s called a personal life for a reason. Just because you’re famous for acting, doesn’t mean your private life is fair game. I don’t know how any celeb deals with this constantly!

The new york press is loving them big time. They are on the covers of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News and they are not even from NY. The headlines were saying it was a glittering and starry night. WOW they are fabulous!!!!! Again it brings this issue full circle. Why are they on the covers and not stories on Iraq? The press is something else.

Looks good to me.

btw That should have been I don’t think so.

Why would she be shocked by bad press? She gets it non stop and she still keeps on trucking with her head held high.

Chez,

I agree with you about the bias toward Aniston, I don’t participate in that.

Honestly, Aniston said the same thing. I saw her in interview around the time of her break-up with Pitt and she had given extensive interviews about her break-up, but she said she drew the line when it came to legitimate news outlets like CNN doing stories on her. I can’t remember what interview it was, but I’m sure I could find it if I looked. Her statement was that she expected tabloids to dig into her personal business, but not legitimate news agencies. I applauded her too then for saying that because I completely agreed with her.

the real tita @ 06/14/2007 at 2:51 pm

OMG, Angie is getting the backlash from this alright. Drudge has it so you can bet it will be on every outlet before the day is out.

It’s already making the rounds in the political blogs and it isn’t pretty. You know comedians and hen shows will be picking this up next. If the conference was for anything but Reporters without Borders it wouldn’t be so bad. I love her with all my heart but somebody gave her poor advice on this one cause the ugliness that stemmed from this could have been avoided. Wrong timing, is all. I hope this blows over soon.

You will always be miserable. Mind your business.

It was a private event and Jolie had right to invite whomever she wanted to invite.

Since when have FOX news and tabloids qualified as legitimate reporters or journalists? FOX does not report, it airs its own heavily biased view of the world. Tabloids do not report, they create fictionalized accounts, never check sources (if there were any in the first place), and hardly recant false stories.Everything comes with a price - even our freedoms. I do not believe these guys are up to the task of safeguarding the freedom of press by exhibiting responsible journalism.

99 America is backwards | 06/14/2007 at 12:29 pm
So Angelina wanted the press to focus on the film at a film premiere and not personal life this time, and people are upset? How backwards are you people in the US?

++++++++++++++++++

We’re backwards? Then keep your ass out!

I’m sure Angelina will not lose any sleep over this. This is nothing new in her world. Bad press? What else is new. She’ll rise above it like she always does. No big whoop. Can’t wait to watch her Larry King tonight. I’m sure he’ll bring this topic up.

Angie cannot win with some folks. When she answered personal questions threw at her at Cannes (such as, I plan to take time off), some complained that she was not promoting the movie enough, and that she needs to talk about the movie, not personal stuff.

Now, she prohibited the media from asking about personal stuff and instead focus on the movie and it’s message, people blast her for being whatever…..

Celebrity asking the media not to ask certain questions are done all the time…Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston during divorce…all the time!

But the thing is that Reports Without Borders are not paparazzi. If you are reporter linked to Reporters Without Borders, you would not be talking about Angelina’s personal life.

She’s allowed to have a personal life. the interview was supposed to be about the movie not her. it is the hollywood tradition now to ***** out a piece your life to promote a movie, but Ms. Jolie does not have to do that. Get a life =\.

She should stop taking tips/advice from Brad. She was doing fine with her own style .
