OlderShiloh Goes Father’s Day Shopping!
TOO CUTE! TOO CUTE!
Angelina Jolie carries 1-year-old daughter Shiloh, a gold balloon and a shopping bag out of Lee’s Art Store in New York City on Saturday. 5-year-old son Maddox led the way out of the store, where the trio picked up a gift for good dad Brad Pitt for Father’s Day.
You can watch the video of Angelina, Maddox and Shiloh coming out of the store here. It is pretty crazy to say the least.

Speaking of fathers… Angelina may be on the road to patching things up with her estranged father, Jon Voight.
“I am hoping my relationship with my father will be more private in the future,” she told England’s Evening Standard newspaper in an interview this week. “At the end of the day we both wish the best for each other and we’ll try to start communicating in some way.”

And that Splash video and the crazy lady is reason enough not to bring Shiloh out in public. That was creepy.
And yes, we ‘oh’ and ‘aww’ over any new pics of any the kids, but I would think that we would conduct ourselves better than that. That lady’s reaction is just shy of expecting Shiloh to bless her.

Portraying slain journalist Daniel Pearl made for a troubling experience.

It’s said that every time an actor accepts a role he or she is taking a risk.
But when actor Dan Futterman agreed to play Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in “A Mighty Heart,” the risks were more tangible than usual.
For starters, British director Michael Winterbottom proposed filming on the same streets in Karachi, Pakistan, from which Pearl was kidnapped by Islamic extremists in January 2002. Pearl was beheaded by his captors nine days later.
“Yeah, you might say I had some concerns,” Futterman, 40, said in a recent phone interview from Los Angeles. “Shooting in Karachi in a lot of the places Danny had visited on the day he was abducted … I had some questions about the viability of that. And the fact that we were making a film of his story. Would that inflame local passions? Would it put the film crew at risk?”
Director Winterbottom assured the actor that he had filmed in that part of the world many times before without incident. Also, Winterbottom’s methods were unobtrusive.
“Michael shoots in an extremely pared down way,” Futterman said. “The entire cast and crew can fit in a few cars. You get out and shoot with no lights, no shutting down the street. You don’t attract a lot of attention, and if you do, you’re usually gone before anyone can react.”
As things worked out, the filming of “A Mighty Heart” took place without incident. But even assured of his physical safety, Futterman — perhaps best known for his portrayal of Robin Williams’ son in “The Birdcage” and as Will’s love interest on several 2003 episodes of “Will & Grace” — still felt pressure simply because of the nature of his role.
“A Mighty Heart” is based on the memoir by Pearl’s widow, Mariane Pearl. She was pregnant when her husband vanished and served as a consultant on the movie. She is portrayed on screen by Angelina Jolie.
“Mariane is quite good friends with Angie and Brad (Pitt, one of the producers) and made herself as available as we wanted her to be. But she didn’t want to hang around during the shooting. I couldn’t blame her for that. But before filming began I spent a lot of time talking to her to get a sense of her relationship with Danny.
“They were an incredible couple. Two journalists who made a pact to travel the world together and write about what they experienced. They had really deep emotional and intellectual connections. He was a serious journalist with an incredibly goofy side who drew the humor out of Mariane. She really adored him, and he really adored her. They took such joy, in fact, that a Jewish guy from Encino met this Afro-Cuban woman from Paris and they connected so completely.”
The most disturbing part of filming, Futterman said, was re-creating the terrorist videos of the captive Daniel Pearl.
“Those are incredibly painful documents for many people, and we tried to rely on them as little as possible. It was necessary to have them in the movie, but we didn’t want to editorialize at all. So we re-created them as faithfully as we could. And it’s really important what Danny exhibited in those videos, his Jewish pride.”
Mariane Pearl has seen the film, Futterman said. “I know it was painful for her to do that, but she did. And she said she’s gratified that the film is so respectful of everyone involved.”
Futterman said he found himself in awe of his fellow performers.
Dan Futterman was impressed by Angelina Jolie during the filming of “A Mighty Heart.” “You couldn’t catch her acting,” he said.

After all this time now you see Angelina carrying Shiloh. Of course she will. After all the negative publicity she has gotten, she has to do something dramatic to change the public opinion. So what a better choice than to carry Shiloh while buying Brad a father’s day present.
On the other hand, now I know why she doesn’t like Shiloh. The baby, who happens to be precious, looks just like granpa Voight. And everybody knows how she feels about him. So, everytime she looks at the baby she sees her father. That’s why she almost never carries her.
I’m pretty sure Angelina’s public advisors told her that to mend her public opinion it would be wise for her to appear in public carrying Shiloh. For her, this is a nightmare. You can see that she hardly smiles, except on the first picture. But, of course, she is an actress, and she is acting as a loving mother. This performance surely will make her worth an oscar nomination.

Maddox is very handsome and will be a gorgeous man one day–I can imagine he’s very happy to have his brother, Pax,(along with his sisters); hopefully, Brad and Angelina will settle their children down in the United States so they can finish (at least) their elementary school years here. I moved my son and it was very enriching in many, many ways though in retrospect I would have placed roots in the United States for those earliest years.

Mad comes across like such a cool, calm, collected young boy! And methinks he’s just gonna be even more handsome when he grows older. I’ve always loved reading how when it was just Angie and Mad they were able to go to the parks, supermarkets, do normal things w/o papz invading their world. :) It’s nice that at least Mad was able to enjoy that with Angie earlier. In other pics he’s looked very protective of Mom, very sweet. Shiloh is cute too, the word cherub comes to mind. I have two children, and I’m always terrified that someone out there will hurt them. Pedophiles, kidnappers, etc. As a mother, I can’t help but worry that someone might be trying to lure them into their car when they’re outside playing. There are moments, though, when I take a deep breath and remind myself that I must have faith in people. I cannot possibly live my life always second guessing and doubting people’s intentions. I can’t always shelter my children and keep them from being kids because I’m afraid of who’s out there. My point is… it’s not the way to live. Instead, I will teach my kids to be cautious and aware of danger when they’re outside playing (and I’ll keep taking a deep breathe once in awhile).
You were definately betrayed, but you have to open yourself to others and continue living. There are so many good people in the world (let’s not forget). Besides, if you lose faith, he may never find you…

I just do not care about Angelina. I think she is so gorgeous, but it makes me sad that the world only acknowledges a do gooder if she is beautiful and married to an equally attractive man. LOS ANGELES, California, USA - Will she and Brad Pitt continue adopting until they have, say, 10 or 15 kids?
“We love having children,” Angelina Jolie said. One of the world’s most famous mothers is one of the most admired as well. Today we continue running excerpts from a recent press con with Angelina where she gamely answered all the questions.
The actress stars in “A Mighty Heart,” based on Mariane Pearl’s memoir, “A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl.” She plays Mariane to Dan Futterman’s Daniel Pearl, the South Asia Bureau chief of the Wall Street Journal who was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid in Karachi when he disappeared and was eventually murdered. Michael Winterbottom directed the film.
As we mentioned on Friday, Angelina calls their son Maddox by the nickname, Madd. The other kids are Pax, Zahara and Shiloh.
Tell us about Mariane.
She is the reason I wanted to do this movie. When this happened many years ago, I remember watching the news, seeing her, being struck by her strength. As much as I think I’m a tolerant, understanding person, I couldn’t understand how someone could, after what happened, talk about love, tolerance, dialogue and other people’s suffering. How could someone become centered so quickly and see the bigger picture? When I met her and got to spend some time with her, I found her to be an extraordinary woman. She handles everything with an immense amount of grace and dignity. She’s had a full life.
Mariane is just so full of love. I think that’s what their (the Pearls’) relationship symbolizes’ two people so open to other cultures. They knew the dangers of becoming blind with hate. She rose above it. She has an amazing sense of humor as well. She’s nutty, a great mom and woman.
Your pregnancy with Shiloh must have helped you portray Mariane, who was pregnant at the time the story took place.
I had just been through pregnancy. So I was highly aware of how beautiful that time should be for a woman, for the father and mother of the child. I remember so clearly now the moment of giving birth to my daughter and looking at Brad, the love in that room, the hope for the future. To really understand how much was taken away (Daniel’s death), it was very haunting. To suffer as much as she did and then to have no self-pity, that is extraordinary.
I have become more tolerant, more open, by learning about her. The greatest thing that happened to me during this film is that I met a great friend. It was very bizarre that I met Mariane through playing her. She has a beautiful family and a great little boy. I feel blessed to know them as friends.
A couple of scenes showed you portraying Mariane chanting prayers as a refuge from her ordeal. Did you have conversations about Buddhism?
She has a beautiful shrine that I believe Danny built for her before he passed. I think her Buddhism was one of the reasons that she was able to think about the world around her and not focus on herself, on her own pain. It’s probably one of the great things that helped her. It’s also one of the things we realized we had in common, I am not a practicing Buddhist but I have a great interest and respect for Buddhism. I’m teaching my sons about it, about all religions, but especially what’s relevant to their countries. With Madd, we visit monks when we’re in Cambodia. It is something that Mariane and I talked about. I asked her questions for Madd, about shrines and meditating. I’ve learned to meditate and it’s very helpful. It helps center me. Maybe in the future, especially with my kids, it might be nice to learn to really think outside yourself and look at the entire picture.
Have you showed the film to Danny’s parents?
Yes, we were with the parents during a screening at the Museum of Tolerance. Throughout the making of this film, everybody involved kept saying, ‘If it doesn’t come together right, we’re not going to do it.’ Like if the right director doesn’t come … we didn’t believe it would actually come together right. We sat down with Danny’s parents. Dan Futterman went out to spend some time with them. We all carefully walked through this process, never saying something that was against the values that they felt their son represented.
Last night, we had a beautiful time with them at the Museum for the Danny Pearl Foundation. I am very grateful for their friendship, for their openness, for allowing us to have this experience. We wanted to stand together to present the film. There is no critic more important than Mariane and Danny’s parents.
When you put on that wig for this movie, did you feel like a different person?
Michael (Winterbottom) shoots so freely so he said no wigs, no contacts, nothing. I said, but I have to try (a wig) and he said no. He gave me one afternoon to prove to him that I wouldn’t look crazy. We were all terrified but when I put it on, it felt very strange … but it worked. I saw Madd and I thought I’d scare him. I said, ‘Hi,’ and he said, ‘Hi, mom (laughter).’
The scene where you gave birth was powerful. Tell us what the set was like.
Doing the birth scene was kind of funny because (when I gave birth to Shiloh), I had a C-section so I didn’t scream at all. Michael, the director, had to actually try to explain to me because he was with his wife when she had children. It was very funny to have a bunch of men around me explaining how a woman is in labor. We were in a hospital in India, on a floor where people weren’t having children. It wasn’t a baby floor so everybody was quiet in this real hospital. Suddenly I had to scream at the top of my lungs and (laughter) all these men were screaming to show me how to scream. We were all screaming back and forth at each other. It was really bizarre (laughter).
Mariane seems to be the silent, strong type. Are you, too?
People have often said to me about myself or the roles that I play, that I’m strong. I’m often surprised that people don’t see me as an emotional person. Maybe they do more now. But for a long time, they thought I was tough or lacked emotion.
You travel all over the world for your humanitarian efforts. Can you talk about this?
I really love other parts of the world (laughing). It is one of the greatest gifts that we have today, that we’re able to learn one another’s languages and histories. So much is accessible to us now because of the ease of traveling. I go all around the world and spend time with people who are working hard every day and are very connected to their history that’s helpful to my soul.
You’ve once said that you’d rather be remembered as a humanitarian rather than as an actor.
I love being an actor. I love being creative. My mom was an artist; my dad and brother are artists. I love being able to tell a good story and entertain. [But] at the end of the day, when I die, [I'd wonder] what contributions I have made? If I’ve entertained, that’s wonderful. But if I have actually been a part of saving a life or changing a law that’s going to affect people in the future, their rights, children and countries, then clearly, that’s more significant.
You’re a global citizen. Do you foresee a future where more borders will disappear?
I do see myself as a citizen of the world. At the same time, I feel a certain sadness. There are so many languages that are disappearing. There are so many cultures that are becoming like other cultures. As much as I like that we can all be connected and share, it’s sad when people lose who they originally are, when their culture is destroyed. We have a mixed-race family. But at the same time, my boys are very aware that they’re Asian. They are learning their languages. My daughter is African. She knows it, I like that people are different. I think people should be prouder of who they are and not feel that they need to adjust and blend together.
Right now, your kids are little so you can bring them along wherever you go. How about when they start going to school? How will you protect them from the pitfalls of growing up with celebrity parents?
We are never going to stop traveling. I think the greatest education I can give my kids, especially because they are international children, is to keep them traveling. They can spend six months in Africa and then they come back to LA for a few months. Then they spend a few months in Asia or they go to live in Prague where they’re going to school now. On the first morning they went to school there, they were fine and it wasn’t unusual. When we’re in Africa, they go to a local school with the bush kids. They’re fine.
I think that just by showing them the world, understanding, tolerance and the beauty of different cultures, they’re not getting stuck in this town. Because their parents are actors, I am cautious about raising them too much in the States where other kids would say, ‘I saw your parents’ movie.’
Madd is in the Lycee Francais which has branches around the world. The other kids are in International School so we can travel and they’re on the same program.
So home is where the parents are.
Yes, home is where your family is. I’m sure at some point this will be their rebellion: They will just want to live in the suburbs and never travel (laughter).
Where does your empathy for the less fortunate come from?
Both my parents were very focused on aid and charity in their lives. I saw the joy my mom had in doing things for others. It was never like something she had to do. She had real joy.
Can you talk about the impact of the constant media glare on you and your family?
The reason we don’t talk too much about it is because the more you focus on it, the more it becomes something in your life. A lot of times, our life is quiet, well, never quiet (laughter) but normal.
The only time [media scrutiny] affects us is if you’re driving in the car with your kids and they say, “Mom, can I go to the park?” You’ve got time and you want to go but you’re followed by a few cars. You just have to say no.
You just celebrated your birthday. On your kids’ birthdays, do you talk to them about how you first met or saw them?
I talk to them about that usually on their birthdays. But we talk often about how we all came together. Madd and I always talk about the fateful day we met. I have yet to talk to Shiloh about it because she doesn’t understand me at the moment (laughter). My mom always did that, too. She called me on the hour, the moment I was born to say this was when you were born.
There’s a rumor going around in Europe that you will adopt another baby, and this time in the Czech Republic. How do you think the rumors started?
Because I adopt and I travel, people usually assume, they either say Brad’s buying a house wherever he goes and I’m adopting a child wherever I go (laughter).
Do you see yourself with 10, 15 kids?
We love having children. There are certain kids we want to help through school. There are kids in our periphery we’re involved with. In our home, it is all about how much we balance, making sure everybody has individual time. Right now, all four of them have daily, very special individual time. If they get old enough and if it starts to feel like we can fit more, that’s how and when we are going to gauge how many more we can have.
Do you cook?
No. Brad would tell you I am one of the worst cooks in the world.
You now have an image as a humanitarian. But we remember when you won a Golden Globe and you jumped into the pool at the Beverly Hilton.
I blame all of you for that (laughter) because I was excited.
Is that wild Angelina gone?
I jumped into the pool because somebody dared me to. It’s wonderful to have an award ceremony about your work. We can have a joyous evening and jump into a pool and laugh because that’s what it can be. We don’t have to keep our dresses perfectly clean. We should enjoy, be happy and free. It wasn’t anything punk, it was true happiness and fun so hopefully, I still have that. I’ll jump into many pools in the future.

Almost every interview(including LK) have a question pertaining to the casting of Angie as Marianne. I am getting sick of this question. How can people think that JA will be able to play such complex and deep character as Marianne. I just don’t understand it.

Beautiful children. I do worry about the long term effect this constant hounding by photogs can have on a childs’ development.
Jolie and Pitt need to rethink how they live their lives. These kids need to be shielded a little better. Children need to feel secure, this type of lifestyle is not stable and healthy for children.

I’m going to give you the benefit of doubt and assume you are really concerned, not just a hater.
I believe Brad and Angie are doing a wonderful job given their circumstances.
-If you take a closer look at the photographs you will see that while Shiloh looks shocked by the chaos she is comfortable in her mothers’ arms. If she was scared she would be clinging to her.
- The kids are learning how to deal with the publicity from their parents. Brad says he is the Zen master of it. Now take a look at Maddox, he has mastered it too!
- AJ has mentioned numerous times lately that she hopes her public image won’t be so ‘out there’ in the future. So yes, they must be thinking of ways to distance themselves from the public eye for the sake of their children.
- Paris, Britney and Lindsey have set examples of what not to do. Lucky Brad and Angelina are grounded people. These children travel to poor counties. They don’t know luxury everywhere they go. They are also seeing their parents do a lot of charity work in front of there eyes.
- The BAMPZS family don’t expose their children to this chaotic world very often. The Photographers are there following them, waiting for any opportunity. Every now and then the photographers are so desperate for a shot they trespass and risk being arrested. The reason they are so desperate is because BP and AJ are not supplying the demand.
- You don’t need to worry about these children’s development. Medical experts are doing it for you.

The one doing drug was Maniston. it was known from HW insiders she was using coke to maintian her lean body and that’s why she refuse to have kid bcos she can’t stop the coke. it was further proven when the razzi who took her bare breast photo with Vince at her Maliba veranda, the two was tanning and smoking coke. her recent gigolo boy friend was a coke head. I think Shiloh is cute and has pretty eyes, complexion and everthing and she has some of Angelina, but not a whole lot. When you look at Angie as a baby, there is a big difference. Shiloh favors Brad and a little of grandpapa Voight. Overall, her features are cute, but I doubt she will be as striking as Jolie. However, children make so many changes in looks before they grow up. We don’t know what she will look like in the end, but I think she will still be a good-looking child. She’s also going to have beautiful hair.
Maddox is such a sweetheart too. Angelina looks like a truly happy, content woman in every aspect these days. Best wishes to the family.

Angelina Jolie brings to life the hopeful message of Mariane Pearl

Mariane and Daniel Pearl. The two had met at a party in 1998, and married a year later.
The world was riveted in January and February 2002 when 38-year-old Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped by terrorists in Pakistan and brutally murdered. Footage of his execution spread worldwide via the Internet, giving the tragedy a macabre 21st-century spin.
But the film “A Mighty Heart,” based on the memoir of his widow, fellow journalist Mariane Pearl, offers a story of hope rather than hate. Opening Friday, it shows Mariane - played by Angelina Jolie - six months pregnant and surrounded by strangers, people of different faiths and backgrounds, all coming together to try to rescue Daniel after his kidnapping.
Even in despair, Mariane finds something positive - linking her cry of pain at the news of Daniel’s death to the cries of pain and happiness while later giving birth to their son, Adam. Even in the darkest moments, Mariane insists on seeing light. That, above all, is what drove Jolie to be involved.
“Mariane, under the most extraordinary circumstances, remained very focused on even having sympathy for the other side, even after they did that to her husband,” says Jolie, interviewed at the Cannes Film Festival last month. “And I’m sure she felt all that we would expect her to feel. But somehow, on top of that, she managed to rise above it.”
Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, had optioned the book when it was in galleys to develop as a film.
The two have used their lives to further their causes (when Pitt went to Africa, he took Diane Sawyer and ABC with him, deciding that if cameras are going to follow him everywhere, he might as well get them to look at some of the world’s problems). After Hurricane Katrina, the couple purchased a home in still-devastated New Orleans. The decision by Jolie to give birth to her daughter, Shiloh, now a year old, in Namibia, made worldwide headlines.
Now they’re turning their art toward life with “A Mighty Heart.” Yes, the film will remind Hollywood that, despite “Alexander” and the 2005 summer hit “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Jolie is a serious, Oscar-winning actress - but she has higher goals.
“I hope [people] read Mariane’s book, first of all,” says the 32-year-old actress. “I hope they basically get to know her and I hope they look up Danny’s old articles and read about him.
“But also I think there is a bigger message in this. We are at a time in our lives where there is so much fear and there is so much anger. And it’s hard for people to calm down enough to focus on having a dialogue and understanding the full information, and trying to have a real comprehensive approach to find solutions. And I think Mariane is a great example of that.”
For director Michael Winterbottom (”Welcome to Sarajevo,” “The Road to Guantanamo”), the goal was to have a documentary-like focus on the facts of what happened in the tense days when Daniel might still have been saved.
“We talked to other people who were [involved],” says Winterbottom. “But Mariane did a great job of telling the story in the book. She gave us the story inside her house of this small group of people who became friends, and just enough of the investigation and what Pakistan was like.”
As for Jolie, being faithful to Mariane’s story was easy.
“The book is beautiful,” she says. “Danny was very much in love with Mariane, and Mariane was very much in love with Danny. They both would have been great parents together. He spoke to her tummy [and their soon-to-be-born child] probably every day she was pregnant, and not just the day he left.”
Jolie sincerely hopes the film’s bluntness about the facts of the case won’t impede her desire to continue humanitarian efforts in the Middle East. Long before the film was in the works, she and Pitt visited Pakistan after a devastating earthquake, in the hope of refocusing media attention on that country’s plight.
“I think it’s a very balanced film, and I don’t think there’s any reason to feel that any one group is going to be so upset about this and feel that way,” says Jolie. “It does make me want to go back there all the more, and I miss it. I’ve been there three times and have a deep love for that part of the world, and I’m very saddened to see how every day it seems to be breaking more and more apart.”

Before the movie of “A Mighty Heart,” and even before the book, actress Angelina Jolie and reporter Mariane Pearl reached out to one another. Pearl’s story - a woman in Pakistan pregnant with her first child suffers the nightmare scenario of watching as her journalist husband is kidnapped and publically murdered - had riveted people across the globe. Daniel Pearl’s beheading was a flashpoint of politics and inhumanity, cruelty and terrorism.
Jolie saw a single mother clinging to hope amid despair.
“Their friendship predates the film and the book,” says “Mighty Heart” co-producer Dede Gardner, who runs Plan B, Brad Pitt’s production company. Pitt had bought Mariane Pearl’s book as a movie project prior to Jolie’s first meeting the actor on 2005’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
“They share similar [views] about how they live their lives and how they parent their kids. And they were both single moms [at the time, Jolie had a year-old adopted son, Maddox]; it was a very natural union. And that got reinforced as they got to know each other better.”
Director Michael Winterbottom saw Jolie embody her friend on-camera and off.
“Angelina seemed to have the same relationship to the other actors on the set that Mariane had to the people in the house [in Pakistan],” says Winterbottom. “Everyone in the house with Mariane said to me that Mariane really brought together the team and made them feel good about what they were doing. That’s what Angelina did on the set. We had a lot of nonprofessional actors from Pakistan, people from India, Britain, America - and she always behaved like she was absolutely one of the team and created a really friendly, family atmosphere on the set.”
Watching Jolie and Pearl side by side when the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it’s evident how protective and proud Jolie is of Pearl and her ability to send out a message of hope and compassion in the wake of her husband’s murder. And when the two women are together, as they were at Cannes, their similarities become clear.
“When I first met Angelina, it was with Mariane,” says Winterbottom. “We spent two or three days talking. I saw how close they were, and how clearly Mariane wanted her to play the part. They seemed to trust each other, and that was a [crucial] starting point.”
In terms of her physical performance, perhaps the trickiest aspect of the role for Jolie was Pearl’s accent, which combines Cuban, English and her native French into its own unique sound.
“I studied her accent,” says Jolie. “It’s a really hard accent. And the way she speaks - she has a rhythm. It was strange because I was breaking down the voice of a friend.”
But Jolie did much more than simply mimic Pearl (and in fact admits she’s too shy to do the accent in front of her); she got to know her emotions, her way of seeing the world. And Pearl’s approval of the film, Jolie says, was the most important aspect of it all for her.
“I do see more her than me now,” says Jolie about watching the film. “But maybe that’s because Mariane told me she thought it was good. She has given me her blessing.”

Encourage trend of charitable work

WASHINGTON – Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore traipsed purposefully up the Capitol steps last month in a simple black dress, red-soled black pumps and russet mane, not for a film shoot but to lobby for child-feeding programs in Africa as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. World Food Program.
Barrymore, 32, then took her extracurricular celebrity campaign to the airwaves at CNN with anchor Wolf Blitzer. She described children in Kenya telling her all they needed was one meal a day, pencils and paper. “It is life-altering, and it has humbled me to the core,” she confided in a slow undertone.
“It struck a chord with me,” said Michael Adams, 57, a guidance counselor at J. Albert Adams Academy, a middle school in Annapolis, Md. He went online to research the World Food Program and called its Washington office to pledge $100.
“When I feel something is authentic, I respond,” he said. “I could see the passion in her expression. Next, I am planning school-based lessons on world hunger and altruism and maybe a fundraiser.”
Within a week, $10 donations snowballed into $25,000, according to Jennifer Parmelee, a spokeswoman for the World Food Program.
Barrymore is just one of many in a growing army of entertainment figures joining humanitarian crusades. Actors Meg Ryan and Salma Hayek and musician Sheryl Crow are among those who are using their star power to turn the spotlight on neglected global issues and to raise badly needed cash even at a time of donor fatigue.
Though celebrities have long attached their names to various causes – the late Audrey Hepburn represented UNICEF, and Brigitte Bardot advocates for animal rights – the links between Hollywood and philanthropy are stronger than ever. Stars now generate hundreds of millions of dollars in donations, sensitize the public and engage people attracted by popular culture with the serious foreign policy issues of the day.
“Almost every star has his or her cause,” said Alan J. Abramson, director of the non-profit sector and philanthropy program at the Aspen Institute, a research and advocacy organization. “Celebrities and their humanitarian work can sometimes show the way, especially overseas.”
“Celebrities are like corporations,” he added. “They make money, do good and get their names out.”
Film star Lucy Liu appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on March 1, 2006, right after visiting earthquake victims in Pakistan on behalf of UNICEF. Traffic on the agency’s Web site, http://www.unicefusa.org , rose by 91 percent that day. “Compared to an average weekday, we received a 300 percent increase in calls and 240 percent more donations. All in all, we raised nearly $500,000,” said Marissa Buckanoff, public relations director of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
There is more, much more. When George Clooney appeared on Winfrey’s show in April 2006 after visiting Africa with his father, contributions to UNICEF rose 20 percent.
And when Angelina Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, sat down for a two-hour interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on June 20 last year, donations spiked by more than a half-million dollars, Elisabeth Nolet said by telephone from UNHCR’s Geneva office.
Parmelee, of the World Food Program, said the growing involvement of celebrities has also helped fuel a new activism on college campuses, suggesting that interest in causes is more of a trend than a passing fad. After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, she said, many young people wanted to get involved in overseas concerns, but that feeling abated because of widespread opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Now, she said, the campaign on campuses to stop atrocities in the Darfur region of western Sudan has allowed students to focus on an overseas cause that is seen as purely humanitarian and not tied to the Iraq war.
While commending celebrity activism, Payam Akhavan, a scholar on genocide at McGill University, said, “The fact that it takes movie stars to make people care about pressing human rights struggles reflects a self-absorbed culture where compassion and empathy is awakened through glamour rather than human conscience and duty.”
Another UNICEF ambassador, actress Mia Farrow, said she became so engrossed in the plight of Sudanese refugees in Darfur and Chad that her lectures, lobbying and television appearances on behalf of the refugees have eclipsed everything else.
“With each woman I met, I made a commitment of the heart, in so many villages,” she said. “Chewing leaves, sucking swamp water, hundreds of thousands living in the bush for months on end, dazed, grief-stricken, teeth rotting out of their heads,” she said, describing in dramatic detail the scenes she witnessed among the displaced Sudanese. “Tell them: We will be slaughtered. We need help,” she said one refugee woman pleaded.
Farrow moved her savings from Fidelity Investments and championed an online petition, leading the company to curtail investments in the firm PetroChina, because a large percentage of Sudan’s oil revenue from sales to China were financing the Janjaweed militia committing atrocities in Darfur.
“Hotel Rwanda” star Don Cheadle and Africa expert John Prendergast were at first rebuffed by publishers when they tried to sell their book, “Not on Our Watch,” about the genocide in Darfur and beyond. Prendergast recalled two major publishing houses rejecting the manuscript as “unmarketable.”
Hyperion Books took on the project, and the slim paperback hit bookstores May 1. It was No. 6 on the New York Times bestseller list two weeks in a row and made it to No. 2 on the Washington Post list.
