TAKING ON A ‘Mighty’ task: Portraying Daniel Pearl in ‘A Mighty Heart’ made for a troubling experience

Portraying slain journalist Daniel Pearl made for a troubling experience.

It’s said that every time an actor accepts a role he or she is taking a risk.

But when actor Dan Futterman agreed to play Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in “A Mighty Heart,” the risks were more tangible than usual.

For starters, British director Michael Winterbottom proposed filming on the same streets in Karachi, Pakistan, from which Pearl was kidnapped by Islamic extremists in January 2002. Pearl was beheaded by his captors nine days later.

“Yeah, you might say I had some concerns,” Futterman, 40, said in a recent phone interview from Los Angeles. “Shooting in Karachi in a lot of the places Danny had visited on the day he was abducted … I had some questions about the viability of that. And the fact that we were making a film of his story. Would that inflame local passions? Would it put the film crew at risk?”

Director Winterbottom assured the actor that he had filmed in that part of the world many times before without incident. Also, Winterbottom’s methods were unobtrusive.

“Michael shoots in an extremely pared down way,” Futterman said. “The entire cast and crew can fit in a few cars. You get out and shoot with no lights, no shutting down the street. You don’t attract a lot of attention, and if you do, you’re usually gone before anyone can react.”

As things worked out, the filming of “A Mighty Heart” took place without incident. But even assured of his physical safety, Futterman — perhaps best known for his portrayal of Robin Williams’ son in “The Birdcage” and as Will’s love interest on several 2003 episodes of “Will & Grace” — still felt pressure simply because of the nature of his role.

“A Mighty Heart” is based on the memoir by Pearl’s widow, Mariane Pearl. She was pregnant when her husband vanished and served as a consultant on the movie. She is portrayed on screen by Angelina Jolie.

“Mariane is quite good friends with Angie and Brad (Pitt, one of the producers) and made herself as available as we wanted her to be. But she didn’t want to hang around during the shooting. I couldn’t blame her for that. But before filming began I spent a lot of time talking to her to get a sense of her relationship with Danny.

“They were an incredible couple. Two journalists who made a pact to travel the world together and write about what they experienced. They had really deep emotional and intellectual connections. He was a serious journalist with an incredibly goofy side who drew the humor out of Mariane. She really adored him, and he really adored her. They took such joy, in fact, that a Jewish guy from Encino met this Afro-Cuban woman from Paris and they connected so completely.”

The most disturbing part of filming, Futterman said, was re-creating the terrorist videos of the captive Daniel Pearl.

“Those are incredibly painful documents for many people, and we tried to rely on them as little as possible. It was necessary to have them in the movie, but we didn’t want to editorialize at all. So we re-created them as faithfully as we could. And it’s really important what Danny exhibited in those videos, his Jewish pride.”

Mariane Pearl has seen the film, Futterman said. “I know it was painful for her to do that, but she did. And she said she’s gratified that the film is so respectful of everyone involved.”

Futterman said he found himself in awe of his fellow performers.

Dan Futterman was impressed by Angelina Jolie during the filming of “A Mighty Heart.” “You couldn’t catch her acting,” he said.

As I said earlier, I already realize that when I chime in and smoke Maniston here, there and elsewhere - it actually keeps a thread on her alive, that would have otherwise died on the vine. One time, I deliberately did not post in an Aniston thread, and no surprise — it died shortly after, because bottomline…

…she is only interesting to people even her so called ‘fanistons’ when she is connected TO ‘Brangelina’ in some form or fashion - when you remove that component/connection, she is nothing, and no one cares. She is an old bag of hair and a rusty can o’ body bling with no one commenting in her threads.

I have to say though that now we know why Z’s always frowning at the paps. That little scene would be frightening to anyone. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Shi started frowning and looked confused when she recognized one of them flashing their cameras, yelling and screaming, and invading their space and privacy. It’s just crazy.
So I hope now they’ll give Z a break the next time they catch her in mid frown.

BTW, I think I’ve only seen Pax smile once in pap pictures. Any other time, he’s expressionless. Now. What are they gonna say about that?
