Jolie displays ‘A Mighty Heart’

In “A Mighty Heart” as Mariane Pearl, the wife of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, Angelina Jolie reminds us that she really can act, that the supporting-actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted” wasn’t a fluke, that there is indeed substance beneath the sex appeal.

She deeply immerses herself and, as a result, stands tall as the film’s graceful heart and soul. It’s pretty hard to imagine that her name won’t be at the forefront again come awards season this year.

(Likely to get overshadowed in the mountain of praise Jolie will duly receive is Dan Futterman as Pearl himself. The Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of “Capote” only gets about a half-dozen scenes to give us an impression of who this determined journalist was, mostly in flashbacks, and he does so with subtlety and intelligence.)

Director Michael Winterbottom (“24 Hour Party People,” “Welcome to Sarajevo”) wisely applies his trademark documentary-style approach, making us feel the building tension and dread as a multicultural coalition of investigators and journalists drops everything to track down Pearl’s kidnappers.

We know the devastating ending from the moment we walk in, yet may find ourselves silently, futilely hoping that things will turn out otherwise. Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic militants because he was Jewish, and the killing was videotaped. Thankfully, though, we don’t have to see it.

But being aware of his outcome makes each early moment sadly meaningful.

Once Danny fails to return to the home where they’re staying in Karachi, Pakistan, on the night of Jan. 23, 2002, Mariane — herself a journalist for French radio — puts her skills to use trying to determine what might have happened to him. She is six months pregnant with their first child, a son Danny wanted to name Adam, but she moves quickly and efficiently. At her side from the start is his longtime friend and colleague, Asra Nomani (Archie Panjabi), but as the hours tick away and the situation grows more grim, their circle expands to include investigators, editors and ambassadors.

Leading the investigation is the head of Pakistan’s counterterrorism unit, a man known as Captain (Irrfan Khan, with tremendous presence) who turns out to be more caring and sympathetic than he initially appears. He orders his men to scatter through Karachi’s crowded streets, dark alleys and hidden back rooms, rounding up the usual suspects.

This, by necessity, takes us away from Jolie. We truly miss her presence, and when she’s gone, “A Mighty Heart” can get a bit draggy. For a big chunk in the middle it feels like a standard crime drama — though it’s a strikingly crafted and stirring one

Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart.” Examiner.com (Map, News) - Both Angelina Jolie and the real-life reporter Mariane Pearl she portrays in “A Mighty Heart” are considered to be citizens of the world.

Because of their occupation and a sense of responsibility, they cross borders as though they were just lines on a map and into the company of people who, in the span of a day, may both embrace and detest their presence.

The inherent dangers of this mindset come front and center in “A Mighty Heart.” Adapted from Pearl’s book of the same title, the movie recounts the efforts to rescue her husband Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped in 2002 and ultimately beheaded by Pakistani militants.

Daniel, the South Asia Bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, is researching a piece on Richard Reid, better known as the “shoe bomber.” Nancy, six months pregnant, accompanies her husband when the story leads him to Karachi, Pakistan.

Seeking an interview with a militant Islamic cleric, Daniel, a normally cautious man, knows he is flirting with danger. Besides being a Jew, foreign reporters are often suspected of being either agents of the CIA or the Mossad (Israeli intelligence). Weighing the risk against the value of the story, he takes a leap of faith.

The meeting turns out to be a trap and the reporter is taken captive.

This is not your typical out-of-the-headlines rehash. Through Michael Winterbottom’s direction we gain an appreciation for the efforts to locate Daniel. The search leads us through a shoulder-to-shoulder population of over 10 million — tribes and factions unlikely to help each other, let alone westerners.
The suffocation is palpable. The tension makes forget that you know the ending.

Equally gripping are the scenes of Marianne at home on the night Daniel goes missing. Hosting a dinner party, she awaits their standard procedure phone call, made every 90 minutes, when either is on assignment. She gradually senses that her husband is not just late, but in trouble, and the small talk that Winterbottom has to engage evolves into a subtle, but growing absurdity.

Jolie brings surprising dignity to the role. Maybe she relates to Marianne Pearl, because they’ve become friends. More likely we’re viewing someone generally hailed for her beauty, who’s maturing in her craft. Her dialogue is minimal, which is understandable for a spouse under traumatic conditions. But she’s masterful in her muteness.

However, the real applause must be reserved for the man who will never hear it — Daniel Pearl, who had a special sense of the responsibilities that accompanied his position. He respected the privilege of reporting for a major publication and knew that real news doesn’t come from press releases and someone at a desk who heard it from someone who heard it from someone else.

He knew democracies depend on such efforts.

Just about every other major celeb out there have locked out the so called Hollwood gossip press and regulated them to talk about reality stars. It is an ongoing process to keep the door slammed to these gossip columnists. They have also made confidentiality agreements iron clad . Today’s gosspip people really have nothing to talk about.
