Well now its crystal clear who was in the right during the circus divorce. If Jen was so manipulative and whiny and IN THE WRONG during the divorce Bradley’s Mom wouldn’t still be so close with Jen. Like any Mom she would take her sons side especially if he was done wrong. Its obvious that Jane still loves Jen because she acted like a lady during the mess the other two created by being so public about the affair. At least Mom still has some sense of right and WRONG. You NEVER see Jane with her sons girlfriend. That speaks volumes about the true relationship. Brads going through a phase right now and enjoying the kids but that can end any time - its the honeymoon stage still and Im sure he loves the kids. But some day Brads going to want to be around HIS family too and Im not so sure Mama Pitt is quite so welcoming to Brads girlfriend.

Angie was truly awesome on Anderson Cooper 360 last night. As she put it (I’m paraphrasing)–it is kind of hard to get upset about life’s little knocks (the tabloids, mean posters etc) after you’ve seen the suffering refugees go through.
The film of her holding the boy that had been tied to stake showed how truly caring she is as she held him, comforted him and tried not to cried. She is truly a warm compassionate person.

FYI - If I recall, I think it was reported somewhere (not some rag mag)that Angelina took the kids to visit the Pitts without Brad before. Dont know about you but if i did not like my in laws or vice verse, I sure as hell would not be going to visit them by myself without my hubby. Angelina taking the kids on her own to see their grandparents (Pitts) speak volumn.

It’s difficult enough for any actor to disappear into a role. Now try doing it when you’ve got one of the most recognizable faces on the planet, which is splattered virtually every week on a magazine cover. Such was the task facing Angelina Jolie as she played Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart.”

Directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (of “24 Hour Party People” and “Wonderland” fame), the film recounts the tragic story of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was murdered after following a lead in post-9/11 Pakistan five years ago.

MTV News spoke to Jolie about the film, the legacy she wants to leave and her battles with the press, which continue even as she promotes this movie.

MTV: Unlike some real women you’ve played in the past, like Gia [Carangi in HBO’s “Gia”] and Cornelia Wallace [in TNT’s “George Wallace”], you actually know Mariane Pearl pretty well. So how did you approach portraying her?

Angelina Jolie: I did know her a little, and I’ve gotten to know her more since. It took it out of being kind of an acting job. This was going to represent a time and a message for a family that I’ve come to know and care about. They’re my friends. And so the responsibility of that became really daunting and more pressure than I’ve ever had on anything. And yet [Mariane] is so gracious and just wants everyone to do their best and would not have been a hard critic.

MTV: Like you, Mariane was the focal point of intense media scrutiny through this ordeal.

Jolie: The things that were misprinted put her husband’s life in more danger, like somebody being careless enough to report that [Daniel] was dead, when he wasn’t yet. That kind of misuse of journalism is so disgusting. It is something that I have not had to confront. But I do know slightly what it feels like to be under attack when you’re having a private moment — certainly nothing to the extent of what she felt. I imagine it 100 times what I feel. It must have been horrible.

MTV: The film works on a number of levels. It’s a thriller, a mystery, even a love story. How does it play for you?

Jolie: You know, when you’re in something, it’s hard to analyze it. I did think that Michael did an amazing job of making it feel very real, capturing the energy of the case, the feeling of Pakistan, the chaos. This film could have been very difficult to watch. And somehow Michael navigated his way through it, to make it clear and interesting and not too complicated.

MTV: As we speak, you are probably one of the most famous people on the planet. Do you feel your fame gets in the way of promoting a film like this?

Jolie: I suppose, but if I really believed it would have been a negative too much, I wouldn’t have done the film. I would have stepped off. I believed in this, and Mariane believed that the heart of the film would surface beyond anything else.

MTV: What are your priorities now in terms of your film work, in terms of the body of work you want to leave behind?

Jolie: I feel very proud of a film like this. And I feel very fortunate that I’ve had a chance to work on great projects. I’m looking forward to a film I get to do with Clint Eastwood [”The Changeling”]. It’s so cool, and it’s a great script. What an amazing chance to work with an amazing man, a hero of mine. I don’t have big dreams of how many more things I want to do. I want to spend a lot of time with my family. I want to travel. I’d like to be less in the public eye. [She laughs.] So we shall see.

MTV: Recently there was a lot of attention given to the agreement your representatives asked journalists to sign, asking that they refrain from personal questions. It seems like the majority of the press on this film has concerned that story.

Jolie: I think the majority of the stories have been about the film. And I think that certain news outlets have decided to try to make it about other things. I’m glad it was cleared up between me and my representation. I didn’t know [the agreement] was out there. It was excessive, and I’m glad it was corrected. But I know why they did it, and I appreciate what they were trying to protect. And that is it.

MTV: A request like that seems ironic since you more than anybody have been so open throughout your career.

Jolie: I feel like I’m a pretty candid person.

MTV: Do you ever just want to scream, “What more can I give you? For a decade I’ve been telling you what’s on my mind!”

Jolie: Let’s go have a cup of coffee! [She laughs.] I can cry on your shoulder. Yeah, I feel like I’ve had a very open relationship with the press. And I’ve only just asked, when I could, to try to protect my family and some privacy. But I’ve never blocked a journalist from a serious story, and I never would think to do that. That would be a horrible thing to do.

When Angelina Jolie met Mariane Pearl, she thought they would have a great friendship. But Jolie never thought she would play Pearl on screen.

They had been introduced to each other some three years before the movie “A Mighty Heart,” which opens Friday, was made, Jolie told TODAY’s Ann Curry. Even when Jolie’s companion, Brad Pitt, purchased the rights to it from Pearl, Jolie didn’t think it would result in a film.

“I guess I never really thought it was all gonna come together,” Jolie said. “I thought I’d met this woman and we were gonna become great friends and now even closer friends ’cause we have something we’re all talking about and Brad’s bought this book.”

Pearl had written “A Mighty Heart” after her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped and beheaded by al-Quaida terrorists in 2002 while on assignment in Pakistan. The book recounts the kidnapping and the two desperate weeks when Pearl was missing and she and a multinational team were trying to win his release.

Pearl, a radio reporter for a French media outlet, was six months pregnant at the time.

Pitt and Jolie thought it was a great story, but were afraid that unless it had the right director, it could easily be trivialized.

“It was, ‘Who could possibly direct this without making it a melodrama?’” Jolie said during the interview, which was conducted last month when the film was first shown out of competition at Cannes. “It could have just been so many different things where somebody took one angle and tried to milk it, to make it emotional in that way as opposed to just saying this is an extraordinary story.”

Finally, Pitt, who is the film’s producer, enlisted director Michael Winterbottom, whose credits include “Welcome to Sarajevo,” “In This World” and “The Road to Guantanamo,” all films made in the straightforward style of documentaries.

Pitt, Jolie and Pearl all felt that style was best for a film about two journalists who tried to tell stories as honestly as possible, without injecting their opinions into them.

Dan Futterman plays Daniel Pearl and Jolie plays Mariane in a performance that has drawn impressive reviews.

The real Mariane
When the film debuted at Cannes, Jolie had talked about losing her mother to cancer, but refused to compare her loss to Mariane’s. And the paparazzi she has to deal with are also different from the squads of media who chronicled Mariane’s efforts to find and free her husband.

“I don’t know what it’s like to have lost my husband and somebody do that to me,” Jolie said then. “It’s very different … I just haven’t gone through what she’s been through. And so I just think being stopped by paparazzi is one thing. Having cameras in your face when your husband is kidnapped or he has lost his life is something that is totally different and can never be compared.”

When it was clear the movie was going to be made, Mariane personally asked Jolie to portray her. They had met on what Jolie called “a play date like three years before,” but had never really gotten together since.

“We kind of kept sending word back and forth,” she told Curry. “But we both hate a phone. And we both take a really long time to respond to the other. And we never got in the same place at the same time.”

They have since spent a great deal of time together while they were filming on location in Karachi.

Mariane chose not to hate those who brutally murdered her husband. Her book is not about conflict but about the people — Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Jews — who came together to help her.

“Acknowledge that we are very different. And at the end of the day, we can see the beauty in that, and we can work together. And that was happening while they were looking for Danny,” she continued. “It’s not this big specific message; it’s not preachy. It’s just something to be aware of.”

honestly why do you think brad is so happy with angie!

it is because she dosen’t nessarily agree with jane on everything and angie dosen’t team up with jane and bully brad to do anything!

when you grow up in an extreme environment and leave it, it means you realize you don’t agree with it or don’t want to be around it, that is the reason he decided to go all the way to hollywood and figure things out himself.

brad has always been about finding his own identity. living his life by his own standard rules and restriction, in his own opinion of what should be conventional.

therefore when he found a partner with similar needs and aspiration on raising kids that was it. this is the strongest bond brad and angie has.

so if jane is still chatting with jen maybe she missed the control she had over brad, i don’t think jane mean ill. i’m just saying moms worry and she use to be able to think she knew who her son was and what goes on in his head. when jen was with brad things may have seem simpler but really it was brad’s hell.

brad is out of this world kind of a-list and jen and jane couldn’t relate, now he has found someone as out of this world in angie. don’t you think he is happy that there is someone that could understand exactly how it feels to be ‘out of this world’?

MTV: Recently there was a lot of attention given to the agreement your representatives asked journalists to sign, asking that they refrain from personal questions. It seems like the majority of the press on this film has concerned that story.

Jolie: I think the majority of the stories have been about the film. And I think that certain news outlets have decided to try to make it about other things. I’m glad it was cleared up between me and my representation. I didn’t know [the agreement] was out there. It was excessive, and I’m glad it was corrected. But I know why they did it, and I appreciate what they were trying to protect. And that is it.

MTV: A request like that seems ironic since you more than anybody have been so open throughout your career.

Jolie: I feel like I’m a pretty candid person.

MTV: Do you ever just want to scream, “What more can I give you? For a decade I’ve been telling you what’s on my mind!”

Jolie: Let’s go have a cup of coffee! [She laughs.] I can cry on your shoulder. Yeah, I feel like I’ve had a very open relationship with the press. And I’ve only just asked, when I could, to try to protect my family and some privacy. But I’ve never blocked a journalist from a serious story, and I never would think to do that. That would be a horrible thing to do.

PEREZ HILTON IS GOING DOWN

In what may be the first hit against bloggerazzi star Perez Hilton’s empire, his main webhost has dropped Perezhilton.com.
After numerous warnings against Hilton’s (aka Mario Lavandeira) use of copyrighted celebrity images, the Oz-based Crucial Paradigm took the site off line; it was dark for a number of hours before it returned to the Internet with a different host.

Hilton is currently named in four lawsuits involving eight photo agencies for his alleged theft of photographs that appear on his site, one that’s been a popular gossip destination for some 2½ years. Hilton frequently adds his own captions to the shots.

“One of the things the (Crucial) administrator in Sydney had told us the day before was if they received any more notices — any claim of copyright infringement — the site is coming down immediately,” said Matt Lum, owner of Hoodlum Productions, the L.A.-based company that manages Hilton’s site. “The action was taken, in my opinion, to insure Crucial some sort of proof if they were sued, some way to protect themselves.”

Crucial Paradigm had no comment on the action.

Hilton’s site is up and running, albeit on less than full power.

“He has a skeleton or temporary situation where he can still post,” Lum explained. “It has limited inter-activity, his archives are not there and things like that. We’ve enabled him to continue to do what he does to a limited degree until we can figure how to handle the larger situation.”

What he does — limited or not — is exactly the problem, from the agency point of view.

“It’s the first victory, and we put a lot of work into trying to get this to happen,” said Francois Navarre, co-owner of L.A.-based X17 agency. His company has filed a suit against Hilton, claiming that Hilton has been using X17 images for nearly a year. “It’s a precedent that’s huge. When we were talking to Crucial Paradigm they were saying they were not responsible, dragging their feet. We had to threaten them and show them they were liable. His new host is Blogads, and we’re contacting them already.”

“If it’s correct, it’s a very important event in our client’s lawsuit,” stated Nick Penkovsky, a member of the legal team representing five agencies suing Hilton. “It’s always been our position that this lawsuit is not simply about protecting our clients’ work, but that copyrighted work is not free to be poached for posting on the Internet without permission and compensation.”

Hilton, who has contended that his actions fall under the fair use provision of the Copyright Act, did not respond to Daily Variety.

I love this family - all of them. From Angie’s brother (James) to Brad’s parents and siblings. This is one grounded family - and in light of the poking and prodding and looky lous (of which I am one) I just have great admiration for them.

I love this family, they are so totally into each other, I wish them luck, happiness, health and long lasting love. As for the haters and naysayers, IMHO Brad P has always done whatever he felt was good for HIS life, and no amount of name calling or bashing HIS choice of partner or HIS children or secound guessing why he does this or why he does that will change him now. He seems to be smart, intelligent, honest and he obviously gives alot of thought to every desion he makes, all we have to do is re read his legitimate interviews to see and understand that. So I dont think he was stolen, I think he wanted to leave because he found someone who shared his views and made his life feel fullfilled. It may hurt but the haters but the fact of the matter is he is LIVING the LIFE he CHOSE and makeing a difference in the world, what is X doing? what are her fans doing? People. Get a grip. They are actors, playing a part. This part is “devoted parents.” The four nannies are forbidden to carry the children or appear near them in public. The children go to day care. Look how Angelina looks awkward carrying those kids. She probably does it only for photo ops. Notice that the chidren do not snuggle into her like most children do with their parents, especially when strangers are around. For Jolie they are props for this particular part. Brad looks a little more into it, but I don’t see pictures of him smiling when he’s with them. He’s having trouble corralling them too. Project Rationale: Cambodia has had a long history in protected area development. By the time of independence in 1957 over two million hectares of Cambodia’s forest was designated as either wildlife sanctuary or forest protection reserves. The subsequent intervention of political insecurity, war, and political isolation resulted in the neglect of these reserves. However, the re-establishment of protected areas has become an integral part of Cambodia’s national rehabilitation since the beginning of the post-war period. A key aspect of this development has been efforts to provide for nature conservation and wildlife protection. This includes the designation of 23 separate protected areas by Royal Decree in November 1993.

The Samlaut Multiple-Use Management Area is one of these. Located on the Cambodian – Thai border within an isolated portion of far western Cambodia, it has a total area of approximately 60,000 hectares. About 39,000 ha. lie within the municipality of Pailin whilst the remaining 21,000 ha. lie within Samlaut district of Battambang province. Its boundaries follow old road alignments, some of which have been maintained in trafficable condition and river and stream courses. The reserve was therefore designated as a multiple-use management area because of concerns that the inevitability of industrialized gemstone mining would lead to the substantive degradation of its nature conservation values.

Angelina Jolie’s Cambodian conservation project will continue as an independent organization after the movie star ended her relationship with two environmental groups.

Jolie terminated the contract with Cambodian Vision in Development and U.S. conservation group WildAid, said Stephen Bognar, executive director of the Maddox Jolie Project.

The fund took it’s name from Jolie’s five-year-old son Maddox, who was adopted from Cambodia in 2002.

Under the 2003 agreement approved by the Cambodian government, Jolie, 31, had promised $1.3 million US over five years for a forest conservation program administered by the two groups in the Samlaut region of the northwestern Battambang province.

Mounh Sarath, director of Cambodian Vision in Development, said Monday Jolie “agreed to provide funds to CVD” and therefore had violated the agreement.

Jolie’s philanthropic adviser, Trevor Neilson, said the actress and her husband Brad Pitt plan to continue to administer the conservation project, which since 2003 has employed 30 rangers and started a survey of the wildlife in the neighbouring 600-square-km Samlaut park.

“A decision was made to spend the money in a new way that would be more effective for the people of Cambodia,” Neilson said. “No agreement was broken. There was no reneging on any commitment.

Among the project’s recent initiatives was a joint partnership announced in October with Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in California.

“We realized that we needed to form an alliance to better secure Samlaut’s future,” Bognar told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time. “Sometimes you need to look outside to increase conservation inside.”

Jolie first visited Cambodia when shooting the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider at the famed Angkor Wat temple complex and also has a residence in the country.

I’m sure AJ’s amazing annual Anderson Cooper interview will once again spike donations — last year it spiked donations by a half million, I’m betting this year it will be the same if not more. Angelina Jolie is a GREAT woman.

Particularly as compared to some narcissistic TV sit-com hack, who, not content with her empty life, empty interviews, and empty endorsement deals to add to her fortune - has to show herself at what else, a SELF-help party. Because unlike Angelina, Aniston’s SELF must come first, at all times. In her usual passive aggressive manipulative fashion, with her PR monster Stephen Huvane literally hovering over her shoulder, she forces the tabloid and yellow press to spotlight her victimhood as the hands of Angelina, as she subtly reminds the public just why they should be on her team.

The sad thing is, there are too many people, even after more than two years, and a few high profile relationships for her - that in an instant, are villifying Angelina all over again, and re-attaching Aniston to Pitt (even it’s only to his mother). It’s pretty sick. But that IS how it works. I think ultimately, those embittered jealous hags who don’t want to believe how GOOD Angelina is (on all fronts) and who don’t want to participate in changing the world for the better - can embrace the fiction that ‘Huvaniston’ peddles consciously and subconsciously (of scorned victim and evil poacher) - it’s a way of plugging ears and singing tra-la-la! They don’t want to BE like Angelina, it takes too much hard work, committment, passion, and intellect. It’s easy to embrace Jennifer, after all - she’s just as fugly as our ugliest girlfriend, she just has a great closet full of clothes, a good brand of spray on tan, a good plastic surgeon, colorist and hair stylist…being ‘like’ Angelina means traveling to Darfur, Chad and Sierra Leone, giving birth, raising kids, working, loving your man….

…being ‘like’ Aniston means keeping your 3 o’clock mani-pedi appt., cackling with your home-hens, and wasting time with your latest f**k-toy, whose using you.

Most do-nothing lame aSS b*tches can do that blind-folded. I know ho’s who manage that in their sleep - they grow on f**kin’ trees.

Regarding Mama Pitt, Brad and Doug’s Comment.
I think what sometimes happens in the world of fandom, is that since we’re not privy to the goings on in the private lives of celebs, we assume they start and stop with our theories, as well as the tabloid and magazine speculation. I’m no different. A long time ago, I speculated on what I felt went down with Pitt and Aniston post split:

It’s simple, they were being very amicable until the news broke that Brad was seeing Angie (Kenya pictures were released - that’s when aniston said the infamous, ‘I was shocked and the world was shocked.’ - well we know she wasn’t shocked he was into Angelina, because he had already told her he was ‘attracted to her and that there was a connection between them’ - Aniston even let her friends spill the beans to that effect in her VF interview - the problem WAS, she was shocked he was LITERALLY into Angie. Heh.) That’s when her grudge match and war commenced.

That’s when she and Huvane set up the Vanity Fair attack. Her life as a victim and sad sack, Brad’s life as a cad, and Angelina’s life as a man-stealer - had started. Brad wasn’t happy with that article by a long shot - he was betrayed, we know this because he fired the pregnant Kristin Hahn (Aniston’s bestest pal and lackey) and left Aniston Plan B-less with a few crumbs. He then quickly had Angelina pregnant (planned), and cast her in the AMH role. He had cut all ties, and Aniston was SOL.

I have no doubt Aniston knew she f**ked up- and I expect at some point she issued an apology and tried to make amends for VF. It was at this point that she told Sawyer and Larry King that they still talked, ‘Pleasant, done,’ she said (around Oct/Nov ‘05). She added the ‘done’ because she had some pride. LOL!

However, after Angelina announced her pregnancy that December - I think Aniston was back to grudge match. Again, with Aniston it’s all about ‘how you make her look’ (ask her Mom). That was another sucker punch. They were again on no speaking terms I’m sure.

But that’s been a good year and some change - and back to what I initially said, there ARE things that may go on, out of sight — supposedly I heard she sent he and Angie well-wishes for Pax’s addition (via a card or whatever). With her career literally at ground zero, I imagine at some point between Shiloh’s birth and today - she FINALLY figured out, that it makes no sense to have Brad and Angelina as your sworn enemies from an ‘industry’ standpoint.

I believe that Brad was able to table the VF resentment and betrayal, and can be on friendly terms once again. Ditto her.

But ultimately, what Jane Pitt did this week was an unintentional (?) slap in the face. She knows how the rag press works, and if she doesn’t know, I’m sure her kids will be happy to tell her. Who knows, perhaps Jane has resentment that Angie is not marrying Brad, and plans to have her biological grandchildren out-of-wedlock. Not to mention the Jolie-Pitt name — perhaps that rubs her the wrong way too. Perhaps she and aniston get along, because one passive aggressive recognizes another straight off, who knows?

At the end of the day, it was all so unnecessary, particularly at this juncture.

Somewhere along the line, what I do know, is that this man (Brad Pitt), who while extolling some virtues of his upbringing doesn’t hesitate in saying it was narrow-minded, and speaking of how isolated it was. This is a guy who saw Saturday Night Fever, and was shocked, he said at the Italian roughneck New York culture he saw on screen, ‘it was like a different world,’ he said. He was sheltered, cloistered, and he wanted out. I’m sure there were aspects of it that didn’t sit well.

Jane and Bill Pitt still live in that world - I’m sure there are those in the community where they live who cannot take a shine to Angelina and her love for Africa, her multi-cult brood, and perhaps they look down upon Jane. Perhaps Jane feels like they do. They may even inquire about ‘Jennifer,’ and assume that Aniston ‘hates’ Pitt & Angelina for ‘what they did to her.’ Jane may feel that the public sympathies (the mini-vans we often speak of) lie with Aniston - and perhaps she is the kind of woman, who is motivated by peer pressure - it may have been important to her to demonstrate to the minivans back home, that at least she and Jen are on good terms, even though her son chose Angelina.

Bottomline, I think Jane visited FOR JANE. For back home.

While I think Brad left Missouri, and that life, to escape those small town narrow minded judgemental attitudes, that he inherently KNEW deep down in his soul, were wrong and f**ked up.

There’s a reason why he’s been with the people he’s been with - he was caddying strippers around when he first arrived in HW (non judgemental), he was living with unusual women (Juliette Lewis), embracing alternative lifestyles (best pals with Miss Etheridge), dating African American women, becoming engaged to Jewish ones…..

Which brings to mind his praising of the late Bruce Paltrow in his GQ interview post Maniston split — he loved him he said. He remarked that he was so different than his father, the way he talked and expressed his feelings. However, I never saw Brad or Bruce, arranging visits to each other when Gwyn was dating Ben Affleck. Brad would never have even mentioned his regard for Bruce Paltrow while he was with Aniston, because I believe she would have considered any reference to Gwyneth Paltrow’s family a threat or an affront while she was married to Brad.

I say all that to say, this is not a man, who lives to please his parents. He can control what he does, he can’t control them and what they do. In the end, I think it proves damaging to Jane’s own relationship with AJ and Brad, but I also think AJ’s priorities are that Brad and her kids are happy - and that’s it.

Brad loves his parents - he doesn’t idolize them — it begins and ends there.

I have the pleasure to welcome back to LARRY KING LIVE Angelina Jolie, the Oscar winning actress.

Her latest film will open a week from tomorrow. It’s “A Mighty Heart,” based a memoir of the same title by Mariane Pearl, the widow of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl of the “Wall Street Journal.”

Her partner, Brad Pitt, is one of the film’s producers.

She’s the mother of four and the United Nation’s goodwill ambassador.

And I might add, on a personal note, this is a terrific movie. I already gave it notations. I must salute you on it.

Was it hard to capture someone living? ANGELINA JOLIE, ACTRESS: Yes, of course. And somebody — and she’s a — she’s a really complex woman. She’s a really interesting woman. So not a simple woman to play. But really the most difficult thing was I got to know here and I have such a great respect for her. And so to have the responsibility to kind of help express to the world or show the world, somehow interpret who she is and hope that through that, helps people understand her better. So I took that responsibility to heart and that made it hard.

KING: She appeared on this show quite a few times.

JOLIE: Um-hmm.

KING: And you studied that?

JOLIE: I studied those interviews many, many, many times.

KING: What are you looking for? In other words, are you looking for speech intonation?

JOLIE: Yes, both. I mean I had — I had all of her interviews on audio and I would just listen to them over and over and over again. But she also has a very interesting way of speaking, not just because her accent is Cuban/French, but she — it’s interesting the things that she — you know her well. When she speaks about politics, when she’s passionate, she is so forward and clear.

She’s very private, so when she’s asked about other things, she hesitates. And, you know, see — I suppose it was that, too, seeing where she goes inside and where she’s direct.

KING: She’s sort of like someone else I know.

(LAUGHTER)

KING: Why did you do this movie?

JOLIE: I believe in the message of this movie. I think people can interpret it different — many different ways. But to me, the most important thing was that you — the idea of this story — a lot of people see it as a story about the division between our cultures and faiths and hate and anger and violence.

And when I read her book and started to work on this, it was very clear that it was a story about rising above all of the fear and the anger and actually coming to a place of dialogue and tolerance. And about this group of people, from different backgrounds, from different faiths, who came together.

So it was — it was a positive story and I thought that was necessary today.

KING: And beautifully directed.

Now, Brad Pitt produced it?

JOLIE: Yes, he was one of the producers.

KING: Did you induce him to do that? Or did…

JOLIE: No. No. He had bought the book a while ago.

KING: Oh, he bought the book?

JOLIE: Yes. Yes. No, he was — he was a — like all of us, he saw her interviews with you and some other interviews at that time and was impressed by her and read the book and (INAUDIBLE)…

KING: Did he cast you?

JOLIE: No. No, she cast me.

KING: She did?

JOLIE: Yes.

KING: She had a say in the film?

JOLIE: She had a say in pretty — everybody had agreed — Brad has such respect for her as a producer that he never was intent on I have to get this movie made. He simply just said if it falls into the right hands and goes in the right direction, it will be beautiful. But everybody promised Mariane that if it ever took a direction she didn’t want and was uncomfortable with — the same with Ruth and Judea — that we would stop. We wouldn’t — it wouldn’t be done. And so everybody stayed true to that.

KING: Was it any kind of a problem when you’re involved with the person who is also producing?

JOLIE: I suppose — no, it wasn’t. It was lovely.

KING: Because the producer’s in charge, isn’t he? Or the director’s in charge?

JOLIE: He — yes, Brad is a great producer, though. He really was — he cared so much about the story and wanted to make sure it was all right and worked very hard to do all the things a producer needs to do. But he really backed off and let everybody do their work.

KING: Did you work for less money?

JOLIE: Yes, I did.

KING: Because you loved it?

JOLIE: Yes. Yes.

KING: What was the total budget of this movie?

JOLIE: I don’t know, but I know that it’s eligible for the Independent Spirit Awards.

KING: Then it wasn’t a lot. It wasn’t a lot.

Were you very happy with it?

JOLIE: I was happy when I got a call from Mariane and when I heard from Ruth and Judea. And then I was happy. I was…

KING: If they liked it, you were going to like it?

JOLIE: Yes. Yes. I was uncomfortable until that moment.

KING: You also met Daniel’s parents, right?

JOLIE: Um-hmm. <
