I am insanely happy. I love them soooo much. Brad keep it up baby. Angelina looks sooooo beautiful and healthy. They look insanely happy too. I gathered all my pals and I am taking them to see A MIGHTY HEART. SUCH A GOOD MOVIE, CHECK IT OUT. THIS WILL BE MY SECOND VIEWING, I HOPE I CAN HOLD IT TOGETHER. I DIDN’T THE FIRST TIME. ANGELINA WAS POWERFUL, DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT WAS HER HALF THE TIME. SUCH A SAD STORY, REALLY GOOD ENDING, IT SEEMS THERE IS NOW PEACE AND STRENGTH IN HER LIFE.

mickey’s with them which means they staying overseas, mickey doesn’t go to the states. they’re doing the weekend alone time without the kids which they’ve always done, good for them.

They look happy. I myself am happy to see Mickey. I’ve missed him since Cannes. Question for the long-time fans: has Mickey ever been pictured in the US (with Angie or any other client)?

I think it is for sure that Pax has assimilated with the ‘pack’. Whether this adult trip is business or pure pleasure, they are alone on that plane. Just sayin’.

Every time I come close to renouncing the JJ comments section (when things get hinky, as it did since the ‘Malibu MIL’ fotos), I can’t because there are so many great fans here who give me a great education about all manner of things JP. Someone is always finding a picture I have never seen or a new review of AMH. Or offering a deep analysis of the tensions of celebrity life or a new video.

I just have to skate past the nonsense in order to get to the GOOD STUFF (and all the folks whose posts I love — and I can love ones that I disagree with, too!)

just saw a mighty heart! a very heart-wrenching in the end, but i think it was done well. #10 is right. It is a film for a selective audience. I brought my 2 friends along with me and they didnt appreciate the film–well, what can i expect for people who enjoys too much toilet-humor comedies and gun-packed action films.

Thanks for the pictures Just Jared. I left my review of “A Mighty Heart” two threads ago. It is a powerful and moving film. AJ did an outstanding job as well as the supporting cast. I recommend it highly to those who have not seen it. AJ looks great. She has always been a thin lanky girl and critics should look at some of her archive pictures. She appears to be healthy and in a good place in her life. I wish her, Papa Pitt and the children all the best. Peace to all.

Universal’s Evan Almighty is a huge disappointment. Despite its $200M+ budget, the presence of Steve Carell and an aggressive campaign aimed at Christians, it appears that this story of a modern day Noah generated only an estimated $12M on its opening day, which will likely translate to just $34M for the weekend. If that number holds, Evan Almighty will fall short of $100M domestic, making it a disaster of biblical proportions for NBC Universal.

Meanwhile, MGM/Weinstein has a nice hit on its hands with 1408. This is a horror film, but not an R-rated torture film from the Hostel/Hills Have Eyes school. Instead, it’s just a good scary movie about a haunted hotel room with a very good John Cusack performance. My sources tell me that it will likely finish 2nd on Friday with $7M or so and 3rd for the weekend with approximately $18.5M. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox) is experiencing a massive 2nd weekend drop of 65%. FF2 grabbed only $6.7M on Friday, but its kid appeal will lift it into 2nd place for the weekend with an estimated $20.5M weekend.

The Angelina Jolie film A Mighty Heart (Paramount Vantage) is performing as expected with approximately $1.3M at 1,355 locations on Friday, and it will bank an estimated $4.6M by Monday morning.

AMH has opened in the US so I don’t think they would have anymore premiere stateside. The movie does not open in Europe until Sept.
So trip is probably just for fun day trip. Maybe Germany. Brad friends live/work in Berlin.

this was a strategic decision on the studio’s part to capitalize on the heat and good press she/it got from Cannes. if they waited to the fall, it would have been squandered. they are looking to make money with this pic and dont trust the pea-sized memories of the viewing audience to go see a movie in october that was hyped and hailed in may.

Great to see them so happy, always makes my day. She’s a loving mother, an appreciative and adoring partner, a passionate humanitarian, a really beautiful woman, and A Mighty Heart just reminded me what an incredible actress she is. As huge a fan as I am of Angie’s, I was watching Mariane Pearl’s ordeal in the movie and didn’t think it was Angelina Jolie at any point. She was true to character.

Ruth and Judea Pearl have chosen the latter.

But after choice comes struggle.

Five years ago, their son, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, was kidnapped while investigating Al Qaeda activities and financing in Pakistan. His captors, who selected Pearl as their victim because he was Jewish, ultimately murdered him, leaving not only his parents to grieve but also his pregnant wife, the French-born journalist Mariane Pearl.

Their story is the subject of “A Mighty Heart,” which is based on Mariane’s memoir. The film, which opens today, stars Angelina Jolie. (At a recent screening of the movie at the Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance in West Los Angeles, Jolie told Daniel Pearl’s parents that she hoped she and the cast “have done right by you.”)

“We are hoping the movie will bring curiosity about Danny,” said Judea Pearl, a UCLA professor who started a foundation with his wife to promote greater cultural understanding in the wake of his son’s death. “We want people to learn about his legacy. We can’t let this happen again.”

On a recent afternoon in their San Fernando Valley home, Ruth and Judea Pearl talked about the son they once sent off to Stanford University with a duffle bag of clothes and his beloved violin on his back.

“When he got there, what we didn’t realize is they didn’t have any bedding,” Ruth Pearl said. “He didn’t have a pillow. He didn’t have a car. But he had his violin.” (Of course, she sent a huge care package — overnight — with a note telling him she loved him.)

“He loved life. He loved people. Everywhere he went, he made friends,” she said. “He connected with people through music in every city he lived in. When he got married, six bands played at the wedding.”

Daniel Pearl, a classically trained violinist, became an equally accomplished journalist with a profound and empathetic interest in all the cultures of the Middle East. It was that hunger to understand other people and their motives that sent him on that fateful reporting trip though the dangerous streets of Karachi in 2002.

The story of that day and its aftermath remains so wrenching that it casts a shadow across a sunny afternoon at the hillside Encino house where Ruth and Judea raised their family.

The Pearls’ hospitality is cosmopolitan. They offer their visitor Turkish coffee and a comfortable seat in a living room filled with art and books. There are visual memories of their son everywhere, poster-size pictures propped against walls and family portraits, including pictures of Daniel Pearl’s son, Adam, now 5 and living in Paris with Mariane, in frames on tabletops.

It is a kind of quiet shrine not only to Daniel’s memory but also to his values. It’s the values that Ruth and Judea Pearl are hoping to make his legacy.

Within days of his murder, they started the Daniel Pearl Foundation (danielpearl.org) to “promote cross-cultural understanding through journalism, music and innovative communications.”

As sophisticated people who understand the power of media, they’ve been searching since their son’s death for Hollywood allies who will help them get their message out.

“I see many celebrities involved in social causes,” Judea Pearl said. “Many them are interested in fighting diseases and responding to natural disasters. Very few, perhaps even none, is addressing the tsunami of hatred that has swept our planet in the past decades.

“It’s not a fight of medicine. It’s a fight of ideology. Of ideals. I wish we could see more interest in that struggle.”

The Daniel Pearl Foundation has undertaken several projects, including holding a music day in October with concerts around the globe; offering internships at various U.S. newspapers to foreign journalists, particularly those from South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa; and sponsoring an annual lecture series at UCLA and Stanford to discuss ways to further cultural understanding.

Certainly, Jolie and Brad Pitt have taken up the cause, but will there be others? Judea Pearl asked.

“I never let myself think this is a therapy,” he said. “If I had known this is a therapy, I would have stopped doing it. I’m doing it because it’s effective. We’re trying to harness the goodwill and energy to contain the tsunami.”

Ruth Pearl says, “I worry about the next generation. If we don’t address this now, what will become of us? What will become of our children?”

‘A Mighty Heart’
‘A Mighty Heart’ moves the heart and head
By Kenneth Turan, Times Staff Writer

“A Mighty HEART” has to serve a number of masters — the somber story surrounding the kidnapping of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, the magnetic star quality of actress Angelina Jolie, the quasi-documentary style of director Michael Winterbottom — and it does so remarkably well.

That’s a lot to juggle, but the resulting film, both moving and frighteningly real, so plays to everyone’s strengths that it’s clear that none of the elements would have fared as well without their connection with the other two.

The narrative of the doomed search for Pearl, for instance, taken from the bestselling book written by his widow, Mariane Pearl, could have turned maudlin and treacly in other hands. Left to another story, Winterbottom could have fallen victim to a weakness for being excessively chilly and distant, which he’s displayed before. And with a different plot and director, Jolie could have ended up with an earnest but plodding film like 2003’s “Beyond Borders.” Instead, these various elements kept one another honest and on point just by being who and what they are.

Making “A Mighty Heart” a compelling experience is quite an accomplishment given that anyone who cares enough to see the film will know the outcome of the story. Abducted on Jan. 23, 2002, in Karachi, Pakistan, Pearl was brutally murdered by his captors, a fact revealed about a month later when a grisly video was released by the killers.

That awful denouement imparts a palpable sense of dread and dismay to a tale that, with its focus on religions, cultures and political systems in conflict, is in many ways a paradigmatic story of our times. As written by John Orloff (Emmy nominated for HBO’s “Band of Brothers”), it’s a narrative that maintains a keen balance between reasons for despair and causes for hope, a story for which Winterbottom was an excellent choice.

For though his directing career has taken some strange turns (”Code 46,” “9 Songs”), Winterbottom’s strength, witness “The Road to Guantanamo” and especially “In This World,” is his ability to create a phenomenal sense of place, especially where southern Asia is concerned.

Working with his usual cinematographer, production designer, editor and costume designer (Marcel Zyskind, Mark Digby, Peter Christelis and Charlotte Walter), Winterbottom is truly expert at manufacturing reality, at making us feel that we are right there among the crowds, the chaos, the complete foreignness of a remote part of the world. Christelis’ quick, decisive editing, which lets nothing linger on the screen, is especially helpful in calling up a sense of verisimilitude that is hard to shake.

Though it doesn’t neglect the emotional component of the Pearls’ story, “A Mighty Heart” is most accurately viewed as a kind of political film noir, a tense and elaborate police procedural investigation of both what happened to Daniel Pearl and the herculean efforts expended by Americans and Pakistanis to try to rescue him before it was too late.

Using a mixture of professional and nonprofessional actors and Winterbottom’s technique of improvisation within a scripted structure, we are once again made to feel as if we are right there at the Pearls’ house when key decisions are made and information disclosed.

Critical to the emotional connections “A Mighty Heart” makes is the performance of Jolie as Mariane Pearl. The Oscar-winning actress, whose significant skills have been eclipsed by her position as a tabloid favorite, puts the emphasis back where it belongs with a forceful, immediate and convincing performance.

Though a series of big close-ups often places her front and center, Jolie resists the temptation to push too hard or overplay her part. Rather she uses her charisma and skill to express not only weariness and fear but also the hard-edged fierceness and lack of patience that are crucial to seeing Mariane as a real person, not a biopic saint.

It is Mariane we hear on “A Mighty Heart’s” voice-over introducing us to the Pearls’ situation in early 2002. Both journalists (she works for French public radio) are in Pakistan to cover the war in Afghanistan and its aftermath. She poignantly describes Karachi as a city with “so many people, no one knows how to count them. How do you find one man among all these?”

With Mariane now nearly six months pregnant, the Pearls are a day away from leaving the country. Danny (nicely played in an abbreviated role by Dan Futterman) just has one last interview to do, with a hard-to-find man named Sheikh Gilani, a cleric with ties to militant Islamic groups. He heads off in a taxi, but he never returns.

Once what has happened to Pearl is known, a mixed group of Americans and Pakistanis comes together, not without difficulty and misunderstandings, to try to ascertain who took him and why. The ins and outs of the prolonged investigation, the sense of chaos and confusion joined with determination and hope, are the center of “A Mighty Heart’s” drama.

At the heart of that quest is Mariane Pearl, someone whose refusal to give up not only on Danny’s fate but also on the quest for truth and the power of communication he believed in is the film’s most hopeful element. Early in “A Mighty Heart,” those ideals are mocked at a dinner party as “a romantic idea of journalism,” but they finally turn out to be ideas both Daniel Pearl and this committed film believe are worth making a dreadful sacrifice for.

That picture has been making me nuts since I saw it almost two years now. One because also in that picture is Sean Penn’s late brother and second I wonder if anyone has shown Brad this picture or does he even know if it exists? He must know that many exist but not of him sitting so close to the future mother of his children.

In addition, there is a famous photo of an extreme closeup of Angelina’s face that was exhibited in an art gallery. She must have taken that photo when she was starting out. On one photography site, they mentioned a bunch of celebs who came to the gallery and wanted to purchase from the exhibit. Brad was one of those people interested and guess which one he was interested in? That photo of Angelina! This was about 7 or 8 years ago!

a Mighty heart was very sad but very good. the acting superb all around especially by Angelina and Irfaan Khan. I really like the art direction. You felt like you were there. It’s like you are watching a documentary and in reality it’s a docudrama. There was a surprise revelation at the end but that’s all I’m gonna say. Go see the film. It’s gritty, agonizing noisy with some subtitles, but very good. You have to be in the right frame of mind for this type of film. If you liked Syriana, you’ll like this.

Read quite a few critics’ review on AMH. Living in the Middle East so I don’t know when and IF the movie will be shown here. But it doesn’t matter how much money it makes. I read it only cost them US$16 mil to make and Angelina took a huge pay cut to star in a small scale movie like that. So even if it only makes 20 mil they are still in the plus…

Very, very exciting few days. Kissed by Jolie several times today (I purposely said goodbye about three times!), saw the most bloody awesome sets ever and have some great photos. Sadly, not allowed to post the good pics yet, but you’ll see them once the publicity begins in earnest. But what a brilliant time. Czeck girls are so ******* hot there is no word for it, a Big Mac cost me 40 cents and I got WASTED last night with the crew for about a quid.

a mighty heart - i was reading the yahoo users’ reviews and two of the reviewers who gave the movie an F mentioned angie’s adoption. what does adoption have to do with the movie? it’s so obvious they’re angelina’s haters and haven’t seen the movie. infuriating as it is, it just goes to show how hateful some people are that they have to go out of their way to bash mariane’s story because they’re jealous of angelina.

no way anyone who has actually watched the movie would give it an F. i’m glad intelligent people would not base their decision whether or not to watch the movie upon her adoptions.

“A Mighty Heart” begins with shots of the teeming streets of Karachi, Pakistan, a city with a population that seems jammed in, shoulder to shoulder. Terrorists will emerge from this sea of humanity, kidnap the American journalist Daniel Pearl and disappear. The film is about the desperate search for Pearl (Dan Futterman) before the release of the appalling video showing him being beheaded. It is told largely through the eyes of and based on a memoir by his widow, Mariane.

We know how the story is going to end. The real drama is played out with the natures of the people looking for him. They include his pregnant wife, a French radio journalist who conceals her grief behind a cool and calculating facade to help her husband’s chances; their friend (Archie Panjabi), whose apartment becomes a nerve center; a Pakistan security official (Irrfan Khan) whose uncertain position reflects the way his country accepts American money and harbors terrorists; an American agent (Will Patton) whose skills are better adapted to American cities, and one of Pearl’s bosses at the Wall Street Journal (Denis O’Hare), who offers encouragement without much reason.

Standing at the center of the story is Mariane Pearl, played by Angelina Jolie in a performance that is both physically and emotionally convincing. A few obvious makeup changes make her resemble the woman we saw so often on TV (curly hair, darker skin, the swelling belly), but Jolie’s performance depends above all on inner conviction; she reminds us, as we saw in some of her earlier films like “Girl, Interrupted” (1999), that she is a skilled actress and not merely (however entertainingly) a Tomb Raider.

The movie, directed by the versatile British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom (”24 Hour Party People,” “The Road to Guantanamo”), is notable for what it leaves out. Although we do meet the possible suspect Omar (Aly Khan), there are not any detailed scenes of Pearl with his kidnappers, no portrayals of their personalities or motivations, and we do not see the beheading and its video. That last is not just because of Winterbottom’s tact and taste, but because (I think) he wants to portray the way Pearl has almost disappeared into another dimension. His kidnappers have transported him outside the zone of human values and common sense. We reflect that the majority of Muslims do not approve of the behavior of Islamic terrorists, just as the majority of Americans disapprove of the war in Iraq.

Many thrillers depend on action, conflict, triumph and defeat. This one depends on impotence and frustration. The kidnappers cannot do more than snatch one unarmed man after he gets out of a taxi, and Pearl’s friends are lost in a maze of clues, lies, gossip and dead ends. The movie has been described as a “police procedural,” but I saw it more as a stalemate.

Mariane Pearl reminds us in her book, and the movie reminds us, too, that some 230 other journalists had lost their lives at the time of Pearl’s kidnapping, most of them during the conflict in Iraq. That means they proportionately had a higher death rate than combat soldiers. That’s partly because they are ill-prepared for the risks they take and partly because they’re targets. The Americans who complain about “negative” news are the ideological cousins of those who shoot at CNN crews. The news is the news, good or bad, and those who resent being informed of it are pitiful. More Americans are well-informed about current sports and auto-racing statistics, I sometimes think, than anything else.

What is most fascinating about Mariane Pearl, in life and in this movie, is that she is not a stereotyped hysterical wife, weeping on camera, but a cool, courageous woman who behaves in a way best calculated to save her husband’s life. Listen to her speak and sense how her mind works. While you experience the fear and tension that Winterbottom records, see also how she tries to use it and not merely be its victim. (In the same sense, the statements of the parents of Blair Holt, the boy who died in a senseless shooting on a Chicago bus, have glowed with intelligence and sanity, despite their grief.)

What is best about “A Mighty Heart” is that it doesn’t reduce the Daniel Pearl story to a plot, but elevates it to a tragedy. A tragedy that illuminates and grieves for the hatred that runs loose in our world, hatred as a mad dog that attacks everyone. Attacks them for what seems, to the dog, the best of reasons.

4.6m is pretty respectable against a production budget of 16m (about 30% of production budget). Just by way of comparison, Babel made abt 5.6 million on the opening weekend against a production budget of 25m (about 26% of production budget).

Having said that, Babel probably has greater appeal in the international market because of the hispanic and Japanese components. 9/11 type movies did not do well in Asia at all. If AMH can recover its costs through the Box Office and make the cream on its DVD sales, I’d be pretty happy with that for Angelina, Brad, Mariane and the Pearls.

Date night didn’t boost disappointing matinees for Universal’s terribly reviewed Evan Almighty which did $11.1 million on Friday from 3,602 theaters. Barring miraculous crowds for Saturday’s family matinees, this PG faith-based pic that’s more a spin-off than a sequel to PG-13 Bruce Almighty should end the weekend with only $33 million (factoring in a 10% jump in business today), according to Universal. That’s well below even the studio’s own lowered expectations for an opening around $40+ mil. The Tom Shadyac-directed pic will be hard-pressed to make it to $100 mil domestic this summer despite its runaway cost of $210 mil. (Universal insists the final budget came in at $175 mil.) The pic’s business was strongest in the South and Mid-West, average in the West Coast and Mountain regions, and softest in the East and Canada. This bears out the studio’s feelings that the movie’s religious theme would play best in America’s heartland. All along, tracking scores for “Unaided Awareness” had been too low, and parents didn’t want to take their kids to a sequel based on a movie they felt was too mature even with the boob and toilet jokes removed. But the problem in the end seemed to be that Evan Almighty sacrificed too many laughs at the altar of heartwarming. Evan Almighty’s reviews were god awful. The haters don’t even know who to do simple math, LOL!!!! The entire film budget costs AMH 16 million.

Nancy Aniston, 60, has said she fell out with her daughter in 1996 when she made some comments on an American tabloid TV show about Jennifer’s hair.

It’s considered a failure when the movie performs under the estimates of the studio.

Like Evan Almighty, universal was hoping 40 million opening week but they fell short because I don’t see a miracle happening today.

AMH looks a like a failure too, not as huge as evan but a failure, the studio was hoping for a 4.5 to 6.8 million opening week. It only made 1 million on friday, it won’t make 3.5 between today and sunday. The total will around 3 - +

Of course Evan is a bomb, universal spend more than 200 million to make this movie yet the numbers of friday are a disaster but AMH won’t do as much Paramount Vantage was expecting.

All this name changing by one bitter hater will not change the fact that “A Mighty Heart” is a great movie. Those who want to see it, will see it. AJ gave the performance of her career and the movie is great. We had this same hater casting doom and gloom on Ocean 13 last week. BP and AJ career are doing fine. “A Mighty Heart” is a smart, indie film and not your average mindless popcorn comedies. Nothing ever changes with this lone bitter hater or paid troll. “A Mighty Heart” is an excellent movie with an outstanding cast. Haters should make an effort to see it rather then sit on a blog all day casting hate.

I don’t have any qualms about the movie AMH is taking a $100 million worldwide. Brad and Angelina are international stars. Babel started out like that, it has made more than $130 worldwide.

There is no way this movie will make 4 million for the total weekend, I’ll wait for tomorrow morning for final numbers.

Paramount was very ballsy to release the movie at 1,350 theaters. They should have made the same pace they did with Babel, this will teach John Lesher a lesson.

The money that will come in for this movie will trickle in from now until may be the end of the year as it makes it rounds around the world. Japan, France and Italy are big markets for these type of serious movies, especially with Brad and Angelina in them.

i saw a mighty heart yesterday at the last showing in the theaters they were only showing it three time on friday and i have to say this movie was very touching i cried really hard when she starts whailing after she finds out her husband is dead just a really powerful movie

Gorgeous couple!! Looks like they’re on their way to some fun alone time together. Always a joy to see them well and happy.

A Mighty Heart is a remarkable movie. Angie’s portrayal of Mariane Pearl was outstanding. In fact, all the actors in this movie were outstanding. I recommend this movie to all Angie’s fans and those looking to watch an intelligent movie this summer. A+ performance and directing all the way.

Oh, I’m sorry, but that is one thing that will not happen where the haters minds are concerned. The Sean Smith Q&A yesterday confirmed it to me. It doesn’t matter if let’s say Angie got a cure for cancer today to these people (90% of whom are women). All they want out of life is to see Angelina Jolie go down and break. They will not be satisfied until that happens. It will take years for their animosity to die down. So, hoping that an Oscar nomination or win for Angie shuts the haters up is just something that is not going to happen. In fact, I can guarantee that they will have more of an outcry against her. That’s the way of the world. I’m just happy that as a fan of Angie’s, I get to enjoy watching her in a critically acclaimed movie like this one. I never got to watch her in the theaters for her other two awards nominated and winning roles, Gia and Girl Interrupted as I was not a fan then, but this time I’m glad that I get to watch her on the big screen for a role that she will surely be nominated for come awards season. So, that’s all that matters to me. :)

The academy better not be stupid this year. She better be nominated atleast damn it.

Even if A Mighty Heart doesn’t do well at the BO, Brad and Angelina can still hold their heads high, because the movie is a critical success
