See, Sam, AMH isn’t the kind of movie that brain-dead kids all glassy-eyed from spending hours in front of the boob tube turn out in droves to watch. It’s an intelligent movie for intelligent people and you need an IQ of at least 100 [i.e. normal] to appreciate it. People like you can’t handle it.

Go watch Shrek or something. That’s about all your poor little mind can deal with.

Evan Almighty is the bomb of this week. With Fab Four right behind with a 72% drop. AMH is doing fine. Wait for the real experts who write every week of this subject to see the truth not these haters.

Plz read slowly haters….if anything is a bomb at the movies this weekend it’s Evan Almighty!

Technically, I’m taking the weekend off, but I just received a call from one of my best sources, and so I’m passing the information along. (The truth is, it’s virtually impossible for me to go a weekend without following movie box office. If anybody knows of a 12-step program, please let me know.)

Universal’s Evan Almighty is a huge disappointment. Despite its $200M+ budget, the presence of Steve Carell and an aggressive campaign aimed at Christians, it appears that this story of a modern day Noah generated only an estimated $12M on its opening day, which will likely translate to just $34M for the weekend. If that number holds, Evan Almighty will fall short of $100M domestic, making it a disaster of biblical proportions for NBC Universal.

Meanwhile, MGM/Weinstein has a nice hit on its hands with 1408. This is a horror film, but not an R-rated torture film from the Hostel/Hills Have Eyes school. Instead, it’s just a good scary movie about a haunted hotel room with a very good John Cusack performance. My sources tell me that it will likely finish 2nd on Friday with $7M or so and 3rd for the weekend with approximately $18.5M. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox) is experiencing a massive 2nd weekend drop of 65%. FF2 grabbed only $6.7M on Friday, but its kid appeal will lift it into 2nd place for the weekend with an estimated $20.5M weekend.

The Angelina Jolie film A Mighty Heart (Paramount Vantage) is performing as expected with approximately $1.3M at 1,355 locations on Friday, and it will bank an estimated $4.6M by Monday morning.

All a Mighty Heart has to do is break even and 16 million worldwide and it will be considered a success. Trust me they will get a worldwide TOTAL of more than 16 million. The film has not opened everywhere. Everyweek will add more theatres and more sities.

SATURDAY AM: First box office receipts have come in to me for Hollywood’s most expensive comedy ever. Date night didn’t boost disappointing matinees for Universal’s terribly reviewed Evan Almighty which did $11.1 million on Friday from 3,602 theaters. Barring miraculous crowds for Saturday’s family matinees, this PG faith-based pic that’s more a spin-off than a sequel to PG-13 Bruce Almighty should end the weekend with only $33 million (factoring in a 10% jump in business today), according to Universal. That’s well below even the studio’s own lowered expectations for an opening around $40+ mil. The Tom Shadyac-directed pic will be hard-pressed to make it to $100 mil domestic this summer despite its runaway cost of $210 mil. (Universal insists the final budget came in at $175 mil.) The pic’s business was strongest in the South and Mid-West, average in the West Coast and Mountain regions, and softest in the East and Canada. This bears out the studio’s feelings that the movie’s religious theme would play best in America’s heartland. All along, tracking scores for “Unaided Awareness” had been too low, and parents didn’t want to take their kids to a sequel based on a movie they felt was too mature even with the boob and toilet jokes removed. But the problem in the end seemed to be that Evan Almighty sacrificed too many laughs at the altar of heartwarming. Evan Almighty’s reviews were god awful. I’m told MGM / The Weinstein Co’s John Cusack horror film 1408 debuted well in 2nd place on Date Night making $7.6 million from 2,678 venues for what should be a high teens or $20 mil weekend. Another movie opening was Paramount Vantage’s A Mighty Heart, starring Angelina Jolie in the story of journalist Daniel Pearl’s terrorist murder. It finished in 10th place with $1.1 mil Friday from 1,355 playdates for what should be a $4+ million weekend. But its per screen average was extremely low, indicating weak interest in this well-reviewed pic. I believe that releasing it this blockbuster-crowded summer, even as counter-programming, was a dumb movie. September would have been a better time.

The 3rd best movie was Fox’s Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, which suffered a huge 72% drop-off to make $6.1 mil Friday from 3,963 theaters for a new cume of $83.5 mil. It should add another $20 mil this weekend. Warner’s sequel Ocean’s Thirteen was 4th with a new cume of $83.1 after raking in $3.5 mil from 3,450 venues. Universal has had much better luck with its R-rated Judd Apatow laugher Knocked Up in 5th place. Its new cume is $101.6 mil after taking in $3.3 mil Friday from 2,975 venues. Sony’s toon Surf’s Up was 6th, making $2 mil Friday from 3,309 theaters. for a new cume of $42.6 mil. In 7th place, Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End added another $2 mil Friday from 2,802 playdates for a new cume of $281.8 mil. 16 millon vs 200 million is not a bomb. It is in limited release. It hasn’t even opened in some places of the US. Read what was written. They are saying had it opened in Sept. it probably would have done better. But yesterday was the first day, and it will be around for awhile. It hasn’t opened overseas yet. Honey, this movie has legs. Evan Almighty is the movie that is bombing. AMH just has to stay true to its self and it will find its audience. Word of mouth is a wonderful pr tool. Peace.
