When I was a little girl, I used to have these horrid relatives (usually OLDER relatives), who would greet me pinching me on my cheeks and jiggling them. I didn’t like it then.

Now I’m an older woman and I look at these kids (and my own and friends of my own) and I can absolutely understand that almost irresistable urge to squeeze those little cheeks too. There’s something about a child’s cheeks, especially a baby’s or toddlers cheeks that is just so pinchable and squeezable and adorable.

On so many levels, “A Mighty Heart” is almost as excruciating to write about as it is to watch. It has many of the virtues of a first-rate political thriller, and yet who can think of it in those terms?

Based on the memoir of his widow, Mariane Pearl, it’s about the 2002 kidnapping of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl and the five-week hunt for the Islamist terrorists who would prove to be his killers.

Danny, played by actor and “Capote” screenwriter Dan Futterman, is first introduced to us in Karachi, Pakistan, where he is running down a story about would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid. Recently arrived from Afghanistan, where both he and the pregnant Mariane, played by Angelina Jolie, were covering the post-9/11 US bombings, Danny is quickly lured into a treacherous endgame with his captors.

The brief shot of him waving goodbye to Mariane as he gets into a cab is ominous in the extreme. From that point on, except for a few subsequent moments with Danny on his fated rounds, and a couple of flash backs to his wedding day and marital bliss, we never see him again. His absence is the movie’s strongest presence.

As with Mariane, and the expanding circle of advisers and friends who attempt to locate Danny, we are put in the harrowing position of ferreting out the facts of his disappearance piece by piece. We, unlike the protagonists, know the outcome, which adds an extra layer of despair.

Directed with tense docudrama exactness by Michael Winterbottom, from a screenplay by John Orloff, “A Mighty Heart” is, in one sense, an anatomy of how people under extreme duress keep the faith. When Danny’s parents, after reports that he has gone missing, hear the news that he has been kidnapped, they are jubilant. It means he’s alive. When Mariane sees the video of Danny as a captive, she reads defiance in his body language.

Interviewed on television, Mariane is asked what message she would like to send Danny and without hesitation, she says, “I love you.” The romance between them is among the most quietly believable depictions of ardor that I have ever seen in a movie. Before he is kidnapped, we see Danny fooling with his very pregnant wife, or talking shop with dinner friends, and we recognize immediately the emotional honesty that is the armature of their love. Honesty is also at the heart of their passion for reporting. (Although it presents obvious dangers in his line of work, Danny is always forthcoming about being Jewish.)

The Pearls’ shared devotion to the cause of journalistic truth is what sets this movie apart from so many other movies about reporters in war zones, even great ones, like “Under Fire.” Is it more dangerous now to be a reporter than at any other time in history? Probably not, and it would be another form of romanticism to think so, but it may seem like the stakes are higher now, and the methods of subterfuge ever more Byzantine.

The search for Danny in “A Mighty Heart” is accomplished mostly through high-tech skullduggery, and it leads to the inescapable conclusion that, as individuals, our survival or obliteration is dependant on how wired we are into the world.

With her belly protruding and her hair piled high, Jolie completely absorbs herself in the role. Raised in France and of Afro-Cuban and Dutch descent, Mariane is worldly in the best sense – she gains sustenance from the differentness of her life experiences.

“A Mighty Heart” puts great store in Mariane’s spiritual composure, and this is the only part of the movie that seems insufficient to me. Her yowls of rage and disbelief when she hears the news of Danny’s execution soon give way to a kind of transcendence. Her articulation of sorrow is glossed over and she becomes a paragon of how to rise above grief.

Winterbottom wants us to see Mariane as a champion of the soul and a shining example of how to survive these parlous times. But the emotional effect of “A Mighty Heart” is too tangled and inchoate for such easy uplift. The movie’s power diminishes its conclusion.

Grade: A

Jess, not “frilly dresses from the 90’s” or even dresses at all. Maybe jean shorts or skirt with a girls top? We’d be curious if Pax or Mad dressed in girl shirts so why you being so deffensive? I understand that maybe this shirt was a gift from a friend and they would like to keep it in the family for awhile but Pax being the next in line should be wearing it not Z. It’s way to big and she IS a girl.

I love Angie, she is a very practical woman. This woman is really living the real life of a good parent, wife/loving partner and a working mother.
When you are traveling, you can only bring limited clothes. With four children you have to juggle everything, from clothes to food, your time and endless things to get thru the day. She must have that clean shirt for the day for Z to wear or Pax or any of the children who needs a clean clothing. Only a real mother can understand this. So just IGNORE those ignorant comments. They do not know the true happiness of being a mother. It is what is in the heart that will define one’s happiness.

Little girls in American society are almost programmed from the git-go to be materialistic and image-conscious. Why are there racks and racks of little girls clothes and only a small section for boy’s items in any given store? Parents often buy way too many clothes for little girls, more than they wear. Kudos to Angie and Brad for keeping it simple. They are not encouraging consumerism in their kids. Plus, with traveling, you need to streamline.

And who is to say Z doesn’t have a choice in what she wears? My 3 year old niece is a beautiful little girl but she abhors anything frilly or fussy. You put it on her and she immediately wants it off, saying it is itchy. She wants her tees and jeans. Z may be the same. Angie already said Z doesn’t like bows in her hair. She pulls them out.

There are alot of pictures with Z in a dress…the Gala cover from last year comes to mind. Z lookslike a happy little girl, so people should stop projecting their own ideas about their own children onto her. Just be happy for her and her family. If you are judging her and her parents by what she is wearing, then you are the one with issues of stereotyping, not them.

And if Zahara is as bonded with Pax as Angelina alluded to in several interviews, I suspect that she’s playing in the dirt with him, possibly looking at bugs with him. Wearing dresses is not conducive to playing, especially with rough-housing boys, whether they’re your brothers or schoolmates. And quite frankly, wearing those little bottoms with dresses only looks cute for so long, IMO.

It’s been a busy week of self-help and sit-downs for Jennifer Aniston. On Tuesday night, she stepped out to support pal Laura Day, an author and so-called “intuitive healer” (hey, no eye-rolling) whose last book, “Welcome to Your Crisis: How to Use the Power of Crisis to Create the Life You Want,” likely resonated deeply with the ex-Mrs. Brad Pitt.

“I’m learning to use my intuition,” the actress told “Entertainment Tonight” at the shindig. “I think we all have it, it’s just tuning in to it.”

Chances are good that Jen’s budding powers of perception were cranked to 11 on Sunday afternoon, when her former mother-in-law dropped by her Malibu pad.

Paparazzi were on hand when Jane Pitt, in town from Missouri, turned up for a two-hour tête-à-tête with Aniston, whom she has reportedly remained in contact with since her split from Brad in January 2005 (Jen, you’ll remember, has had a rocky relationship with her own mom for several years).

Celebrity Babylon says Brad’s bodyguards accompanied Jane over to Jennifer’s place, with the actress’ own security staff then hustling her inside.

“Enough time has passed since the split with Brad for Jane to visit Jen,” a source tells OK! magazine. “They have always been close, and that doesn’t just disappear.”

The chummy sentiment is echoed by Brad’s brother Doug, who declares to People, “Jennifer is a friend of Brad’s. Why wouldn’t she be a friend of ours?”

There’s no word on whether Aniston and Mrs. Pitt acknowledged the Angelina Jolie-shaped elephant in the room during their visit (expect the tabloids to explore that angle next week), although the lately ubiquitous mom of Maddox, 5, Pax, 3, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 1, was supposedly less than thrilled when she learned of the Father’s Day rendezvous.

”She immediately grabbed her cell phone, called Brad and read him the riot act,” a mole maintains to the Chicago Sun-Times. “She was mad as hell, screaming, ‘What the hell was she thinking — did she do this just to embarrass me?’”

A snitch chimes in to the New York Post that Angelina “really does not like Jennifer, even though Jen has not ever done anything to her and couldn’t care less about her. She doesn’t like that Brad’s mom is still close with Jen and is threatened by that.”

Anyhoo, when not catching up with onetime relatives and supposedly pushing Angie’s buttons, Aniston continues to enjoy the rippled, easy-on-the-eyes company of model Paul Sculfor, who was photographed sans shirt at her Hollywood Hills digs on Friday.

Still, her apparent coziness with the comely Brit hasn’t quieted the rumor mill.

E! Online’s Marc Malkin notes that Jen engaged in an extended conversation with a newly separated Bradley Cooper at the Laura Day soiree (you’ll recall he co-starred with her ex-boyfriend Vince Vaughn in “Wedding Crashers”).

Later, the two joined fellow guests Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher for some chow at the Tower Bar at the Sunset Tower Hotel, reports People.

OK!, meanwhile, is convinced Jen is consulting with a high-end, high-cost matchmaking service to find her an appropriate partner.

Aniston, for her part, is remaining firmly focused on the positive. When “Extra” cornered her on Tuesday night and asked how she’s doing, she enthused, “I’m better every day, babe.”

The Jolie-Pitts are the coolest celebrity kids ever! Not to mention the most adorable. I like how they share clothes instead of some celebrity kids who would never be caught dead in the same outfit twice.

I believe she pratice witchcraft on not only Brad, but alot of people in the world.

JJ, it’s not hand me down clothes. It’s more like passing down. And to all there is NOTHING wrong with that. That is what’s called smart and practical and even good parenting. It should be obvious to everyone that babies grow very fast to be toddlers and even thru 9-10 years old. They outgrow their clothes before the clothes could be worn out. So there is nothing wrong to pass on these clothes to the next sibling. Who knows, y’all may see Pax wearing it to school next time.
Also Angie has said in one of her many, many interviews that Z has a mind of her own. For all we know it may be her who say that she want to wear this t-shirt. She may want to emulate big bro Mad. JP’s don’t see anything wrong with that. So, none of our beeswax. Let it be, and just enjoy these pictures of very happy kids. GEEEEEZZE.

Wait untill Z get into grade school and the other kids reject her because she is wearing boy clothers, that will hurt.
No matter what all of you think when she mix with older kids, she will be pick on for dressing like that.
If you are not Z’s nationality you really do not understand how the world will react to you, you are put under a telescope. When your hair is not straight and you wear your brothers old clothes. I had a friend that live 4 doors from me, everyone knew she was adopted.
The other kids picked on her so bad, this went on up to middle school untill they finally move. It was so sad the way thy pick on her and I think alot of it had to do with her race. Kids can be really mean if you don’t look like them or believe like them.
Look at the posting here if you are not worshiping Brad and Ang, then someothers attack you.

Interestingly enough, I believe there are parallels, though I DON’T think of Angelina as saintly. But here is Angelina, inspiring many people to do greater good for the people of the 3rd world. Volunteer work overseas have increased, interest in the 3rd world has increased, donations to UNHCR spikes when Angelina talks about refugees. But of course, for all these achievements by a woman, the times, it appears hasn’t changed. Angelina must be a witch. LOL.

But, perhaps in 40 years time (no I don’t think it will take 400 years in the internet age), Angelina might also be canonised as a Saint.

LOL. But I for one, won’t do think of Angelina as a saint. My respect for Angelina isn’t because of her saintlike qualities but because of her human like qualities. I could NEVER aspire to be a saint, nor would I seek to be one. I’m more than happy to be inspired by a woman who is in many ways, full of faults and failings, just trying to be useful, trying to be a better person.

Developmentally, Zee probably doesn’t care too much about the symbols of gender at the moment (Those of you who want to see her rocking the frills).

At 3-4 y.o. kids develop an interest in sex/gender. And many develop rigid (and sometimes unique) ideas of what it means to be male or female. My niece went through (an extremely annoying — to me) phase when she would only wear pink (and my kid inherited all that pretty pony!) and only eat pink food until she got sick of strawb yogurt (and red dye #2). My kid went through the sparkly-with-a-nod-to-pink phase, but she had always had a female doctor, and one day she had to go in and her doc wasn’t there and she got a male doctor. She was NOT having it. “DOCTORS ARE GIRLS!” she was crying her head off, thinking I had taken her to some quack. At 10 she has a severe allergy to anything with ruffles (”that is hideous, Mom”) Despite her having been dressed in black all the time as a baby and a lot of navy along the way, she identifies as a girl — with, of course, her own view of what that means — everything from sweaty athletic exertion to a love of shoes (only the second of which she’s inherited from me).

Point being, sure it matters how rigid the parents are about gender (or the opposite — one of my friends kept her older daughter in gender neutral overalls for years, but she came home from a preschool playdate with red fingernails claiming she wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader), but the kid is going to go on his or her own gender journey, taking in parental values and behavior as well as what they pick up in media, books, the world around them. Kids will have preferences that are their own, guaranteed.

So vintage rock tee or white sundress for a two year old is all about parental preference. In a year or two, you can count on Miss Zee to have a LOT to say about what being a girl means to her.

Between 3 - 4 sounds just right. It’s certainly been my experience with my daughter and her little friends. She is into the pink and sparkly phase and I swear, I’m not responsible. I didn’t try to dress her in pink or sparkly. That started at around 3.5 years of age (before then, she was happy to wear blue or any other colour that looked pretty to her). She has several girl friends with the same proclivities. Talk about peer group pressure. But seriously, my daughter hardly watches TV or videos - like may be 2 hours a week at most. When she does watch TV, during those 2 hours a week, its usually ‘animal planet. So, I really don’t know where the love of Pink and sparkly comes from but it isnt’ from me.

I know for a fact that AJ practices witchcraft. She still has demons to overcome. We all do. As for Brad, that’s his problem. Ha! Stepford …

She’s going to daycare, where she gets to run around, probably play in the dirt and just be a kid. What is wrong with wearing pants so that she can play freely without worrying about her clothes?

When they are out and about as a family, she is dressed appropriately. Get over it people.

And there’s nothing wrong with sharing an older sibling’s clothes. It’s part of being siblings…passing something down to the other.

What do you recommend they do? Throw the clothes away once they’ve been worn and buy new ones even though what they have is still in good condition?

This is a woman who is practicing what she preaches and is showing her children to share and value what they have.

I’ve noticed in past photos of Pax and Zee, seems like the backpacks that they carry are also hand-me-downs from Maddox. This is a really normal down to earth family. I love them!

As for the Jolie-Pitt children. Not only are they beautiful and well loved. They are seeing the world outside of what a priveleged life they are forunate to have. They realize from birth and circumstances how underpriveleged so many others are.

This will allow them to grow as responsible and caring individuals.

Unbelievable….over 150 posts on here and all some of you can talk about is “hand me down” clothes because the kids have worn the same shirt in different pictures. First of all, did anybody here even consider that ALL of the kids may have a shirt of their own? My 2 daughters have some of the same shirts (tees) but in different sizes. They also share clothes that they can. As for dressing like a girl: there is no such thing. My daughters prefer jeans and t shirts, I have to beg to get them in anything else. But they always look like girls whatever they wear. Looked at kids around in the modern day world? I’ve worked in public schools for almost 30 yrs. and the days of frilly dresses are OVER unless it’s a special occasion. And what the heck is wrong with that? Women do not have to wear dresses! We can actually wear what we want now in the year 2007. I only check around these websites periodically but I see that the same venomous, snippy, judgmental, self-righteous hags are still here.

So the children wear hand-me-downs while Mommy wears $800 shoes.
