Older54 Dogs Get Vick-timized
NFL star Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with running a dogfighting ring out of his mansion in Virginia. His arraignment before a federal judge will be in Richmond on July 26.
AOL News reports, “54 pit bulls were recovered from the property during searches in April, along with a “rape stand,” used to hold dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified for dogs; and a bloodied piece of carpeting, the documents said.”
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said: “We agree with them that dogfighting is cruel, degrading and illegal. The alleged activities are very disturbing and we are extremely disappointed Michael Vick has put himself in this position.”

This story makes me feel sick. I wish people would treat animals with dignity and respect.. they are such innocent creatures and most of them are so friendly. I can’t imagine anyone looking into a dog’s eyes and causing it any pain, it’s so.. unnatural and disturbing. I hope everything he’s ever done to those pups haunts him for the rest of his life. Nancy Grace was talking about all of this the other night. She had a bunch of attorney’s on and they all pretty much agreed that he’s toast. They said even if by association no one will want to know him. He’ll lose all of his product contracts too.

I adopted mine from a shelter and they rescued her from a overbreeding/fighting situation.

And the dogfighting is one thing, but then gee if the dog isn’t fit to fight, instead of taking them to the humane society where worst case scenerio they’ll have a needle put in them and they’ll just fall asleep, these people have to wet the dog down and electrocute it, or throw it to the ground until it dies. Or even hang it. What kind of people do something like this?? So please stop the comparisons to hunters and animal eaters etc. That’s going to go on until the end of time. Dogfighting serves no purpose except to pad people’s pockets or apparently give them some sick thrill when they watch the dog being killed, or better yet get to do the killing themselves.

And just for the record it’s not just 54 dogs, it’s who knows how many over the course of 6 years. The 54 are the only ones that are remaining as evidence, and they too will most likely be put down as they will be deemed unadoptable since they have been trained for fighting. Again, stick to the subject, it’s about the cruelties of dog fighting, not hunting, or the Duke Lacross team, or for God’s sake slavery and it’s certainly not about the color of the man’s skin. It is my understanding that the evidence is circumstantial. I think that Michael Vick deserves “DUE PROCESS”. He is INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY. So true. People will turn the channel when a starving child in Darfur is dying. People do not get angry at this. They will not condemn this.
But an animal? Well, people can be detached from animals because animals can’t talk back. People have more control over animals so loving them over people gives people a sense of self-worth and an illusion of being good when tehy can’t be good to people.
I am a vegeterian - for health reasons rather than some huge political reason. However, when Anderson Cooper takes his cameras to Darfur and shows kids whose skin is dropping from malnourishment, I get very involved and attentive.
Rightfully so we should fight for animal rights but why are you not this angry at starving babies?

WHat I said is: LEGALLY, there is no case against Michael Vick nor can we prove his guilt YET. His PROPERTY was used. He was not present. We have NO proof that he was involved in this. So we have to wait and see. We cannot be quick to judge yet.
I did NOT say the act was ok, I said we are quick to judge him when he was not present during the fights for all we know he may not have been aware of what was going on on this Virginia property where this took place.

I am the owner of a pit bull, rescued when he was 2 yrs from a dog fighting gang in Indiana. He is almost 5 and doing much better, but if you could spend just one day with him you would see and understand how much trauma these dogs go through… Just the sound of a door latch startles him. He is very timid. When we walk him on the street some people look at him and are frightened because he is a pit bull, but what people do not understand is how scared HE is. He is an incredible dog, the sweetest dog and so wonderful with children (pit bulls are known to be extremely good with children). My family cannot imagine our lives without him, he is the best dog ever. I also HIGHLY recommend adopting a pit bull.
And remember, it IS possible to save these dogs and help them understand not all people want to hurt them.

This post is specifically about dogs hence the responses in relation to animal cruelty. It is stupid to say that those who have comented on this thread a unsympethetic to other atrosities which occur against women, men children etc. Atrosities occur within both the animal and human world. But as humans, we are the more developed and have the ability to think and make judgements between right and wrong rather than react impulsively on instinct like animals do.
Any living thing deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. What a soul-less ignorant fool you are to think otherwise.
Why are some people here bringing up all kinds of other issues around the world? What is this article about? Dogfighting is it not? What is wrong with being outraged by this?
Stick with the subject matter why don’t you? Why bring up Darfur and bullfighting, and slavery and every other prooblem in the world? How do you know the same people who are furious about this animal abuse isn’t concerned about other issues as well?
So to prove oneself as not being a hypocrite as someone here so blatantly assumes of everyone who feels strongly against animal cruelty, one must proclaim him/herself a vegatarian who owns no leather goods? To say that dogfighting is wrong, one must also express how distressing all the problems in the world are as well?
In order to say this is wrong, must we also bring up hatred for the rapists and pedophiles? Must we also talk about child abuse and terrorism? Must we also talk about necrophilia and domesic violence? I don’t see anything wrong whatsoever with expressing anguish at these inhumane acts to dogs as this is what this thread and article is about.

Are plants not living things as well? Do plants not have life? Are they not killed when you eat them? Come to think of it, bacteria and viruses are life too, so by taking antibiotics, you are in fact killing millions of lives. Eating meat does not make one a hypocrite. I don’t think many meat eaters out there would approve of animals being tortured to death so that they could eat them.
I am by no means crticizing the way you choose to live. Don’t eat meat, don’t wear shoes, belts or buy leather purses. Whatever helps you sleep at night. But hey, there’s no need to call others hypocrites just because they don’t live the way YOU think they should. If you want to be so technical about it and pick on dog lovers who eat meat, why don’t you also include environmentalists who read books or buy/use anything that contains plastic. Do you know for a fact that every household product you use, every cosmetic product you own (gel, shampoo, soap etc.), every medicine you have ever ingested have not been tested on lab animals, being the vegetarian you are?
Some people call themselves vegetarians but eat fish, eggs, drink milk. And where do eggs and milk come from? I don’t know what kind of vegetarian you are and frankly, I don’t care. I treat my pet (Moses) with decency and respect. He is well fed and cared for. He has his own area (500 ft) with couch, bed, fan, heater, television, and radio. He is walked daily with a .75 acre to run in. He has two houses. I still believe Michael Vick is INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY. I believe in DUE PROCESS. And then the house he built is almost like a fortress from the outside, so people can’t see what’s going on, I guess that’s circumstantial. They find numerous dog fighting materials as well as corpses on the grounds. And Mr. Vick tells us “he hardly ever goes to the property”. Hmmm, that must mean he has been there (and I won’t bring up that the people in the community have seen him numerous times as that is circumstantial). So, when he was there as infrequently as he says, was all the dog fighting equipment, the blood, everything just hidden everytime he came in to town? The police seemed to find it pretty easily. Are we supposed to believe the man is just an innocent breeder of dogs and that’s it? And if he is, where are all the buyers of these dogs that he’s raising, why haven’t we seen any of them come out and say I bought a pit from him and the dog is the sweetest thing? We haven’t heard about that, as there aren’t any - his dogs aren’t bred for pets. And again, even more horrible to me than the fighting is what was done to these dogs if they couldn’t fight. Electrocution? That’s real humane. People are so disturbed by this case, as most of us couldn’t fathom what has been done to these helpless creatures. Normal people do not abuse animals like this. Only your Jeffrey Dahmers, your Ted Bundy’s. And yes, unfortunately there are numerous dog fighting rings - his wasn’t the only one. But, even the head of the humane society said this was one of the most disturbing cases he’s seen in that these dogs were just tortured if they weren’t able to fight, or lost a fight. That’s just wrong.

I was one of the people who brought up global issues on animal torture and humanity issues for several reasons:
Number one, I was baffled by posters who used the “N” word to attack this man. SO they are against animal cruelty but are not against using te “N” word to degrade blacks? When you use the “N” word, you are not just insulting Michael Vick but are also insulting all the black people that have nothing to do with dogfighting! What does race have to do with this?
So I was pointing out the hypocrisy in it all - how an animal rights person can see the wrong in torturing animals but can’t see the wrong in denigrating black people with racial slurs? Sensitivity for one thing but not for others? Are pitbulls more important than people? Shouldn’t they be equals?
ALso, I am fascinated by people who scream animal torture and I’ll say it again as I have been saying for years : they are engaged in supporting animal torture everyday. WHEN YOU EAT A CHICKEN, YOU ARE EATING AN ANIMAL THAT HAS GONE THROUGH THE MOST ATROCIOUS TORTURE BEFORE HE IS SOLD TO YOUR SUPERMARKET.

You are a loser. I have no doubt you were unpopular in high school and as you sit typing on your computer, you probably have a face full of zits, and nothing to do on a Saturday night.
The difference between a homeless person and animals is that the person made their own choices!! Dogs and cats held captive are completely at our mercy!! These fighter dogs were raised with hate and no love. Other dogs and animals were abused and killed to increase their fighting potential, not to mention the abuse they have suffered year after year, only to die an awful death, such as through a fight, or drowned or electricuted (via new sources related to this story).

This guy is a complete ASSHAT. I used to work for an Animal Alliance association and they busted a dog fight ring. What a lot of people don’t realize is that these dogs are kept as evidence until the trial. Here it took over a year for the trial so the dog were kept in separate pens in the local shelter. Over 50 dogs were euthenized on the spot and 50 were kept as evidence. These dogs spent a year in the pen with out being able to go outside. The fighting dogs also took up pens that could of housed adoptable animals. I think this guy deserved a tazer gun to the nut sack!!!!

This makes me so angry still… I watch Animal Planet a lot and know a bit of what the ASPCA officers have to deal with on a daily basis saving all kinds of animals. They are such admirable people. Unfortunately most animals found in a dog-fighting operation are put down, the ones that aren’t are the exception and these are usually the female dogs because they were used only for breeding hence less involved in the direct violence of the ring fights.
I urge you guys to read a great book about the extent of the true problem of dog-fighting rings (including vets who actually treat and ‘help’ these dogs get better again so they can fight again, if it’s a prized dog that is, most are thrown into a river or beaten to death or they let another dog kill it and then just discard it like trash) and abandoned dogs. It’s called “The Man Who Talks to Dogs” by Melinda Roth.
I’m not a member of PETA, should some of you have negative connotations with the organization. I do regularly contribute to animals shelters, however, here in Melbourne Australia, where just like in the States tens of thousands of animals (mostly cats and dogs, some horses, and countless smaller animals no one gets to find out about) are put down due to a combination of BAD, BAD owners who shelf responsibilities once they decide they don’t want their animals anymore, like say, a few months after Christmas or someone’s birthday, etc.
I agree with a previous poster who said that pitbulls are victimized further by mainstream media’s portrayal of the breed. Watch Animal Planet’s ASPCA New York branch’s shows, and you’ll see that the pitbulls they save are such sooks… :)
A great dog breed book I found, and I personally LOVE the objective treatment the vet gives his book, and it’s warm too, it’s by Dr. Bruce Fogle, “The New Encyclopedia of Dogs” published by DK. You’ll even find out that for example, German Shepherds even come in white! (In most countries, including here in Oz, most of these white puppies are usually immediately put down. Apparently in this day and age where by 10th grade you learn about recessive genes, most uninformed breeders insist that white shephers are “not permitted in the rule books/not conforming to standards of the breed/blablabla”. (Funny huh, the connotation of white german shepherds being put down…) The white shepherds are simply a recessive gene, simple as that. There’s a breeder in the state of Queensland who received death threats because he did NOT want to put down these puppies, believe it or not; it’s the other breeders who threatened him.
ANY breed of dog CAN bite, it’s just that the mainstream media latches on to stories in which the breed is usually a reasonably big one. Think about it: lots of children are bitten by smaller breed dogs, but no one reads/hears about it because it doesn’t make “good” newsstory to say “Chihuahua/Maltese/Shih Tzu bites 5-year old boy!!!” It’s a simple matter of the size of the jaw and the size of wound inflicted. Also, we usually don’t get to find out why the bite occured in the first place.
A few years ago here there was a brouhaha story of how a boy was attacked by some dogs. The media made a big deal of how the boy suffered, etc, which I don’t deny, he had some injuries. What really pissed me off however, was the fact that the media said ‘he fell over the fence into the dogs’ yard and they attacked him’. On closer inspection of the news footage however, you realize that the actual side fence they were talking about was almost double the boy’s height. (He was about a meter tall, or just 3′4″ and the side fence was a regular 160cm, or btw 5′3″-5′4″.) Before seeing the footage I’d thought it was a piddly, short side fence but nooooooo, it was a proper tall fence!!! A boy does not FALL OVER a tall fence, he CLIMBS over it, duh…but of course the media made it all the owner’s fault and her dogs. Hey, what dog wouldn’t at least bark when a stranger enters its domain? Let alone climb over a fence? And what exactly was the boy’s parents doing? Didn’t they teach him NOT to climb over people’s fence and enter other people’s property?
Anywho, I hate people who abuse animals like running a dog-fighting ring. One of the ‘equipments’ used by them is treadmill where they make a dog (who’s been starved of food, attention, affection, care, etc.) run on it to build stamina and muscle, and when it slows down, they prod its genital areas with an electrically-charged stick so it’d keep running. I’d volunteer to do THAT to this Vick, but I’d probably have to wait in line though… See if he likes mild-to-high electricution to HIS pathetic nether regions… :lol:

I own a Pit Bull and I agree with most posts, esp. the one about why the breed is always condemned. Pits have a naturally aggresive streak inside of them, but you have to pull it out of them in order for them to attack or turn on you. If you train them and spend the time loving on them they are the most gentle, loyal and obedient dogs around.
As for Vicks involvement he by court definition is innocent until proven guilty. The facts/evidence however speak very loud. The only reason people like dog fights esp. with pit bulls is because it’s another form of an adrenline rush. So when people breed them to fight it’s a way to get their high and possibly even work out their own internal aggression in another form.
It’s degrading and low - and unfortunately happens all around America.
I hope Vick does get punished/ suspended. He’s disrespected his teammates and the NFL. He’s brought undue attention to himself and even brought one more negative spotlight onto the NFL.
What he doesn’t realize is that because of this more and more states may try to do what they do in Denver. In Denver they euthanize all pit bulls. Pit bull owners moved out of the city to protect their dogs. There are other places where they try to make it illegal and impossible for you to own this dog. And it’s all because people like Michael Vick think all pit bulls are good for is getting an adrenline rush in the off season.
This is the federal government going after vick, these are the same attorneys that go after scotter libby and other prosecute top mob bosses. The bottom line is, they would not of indicted him without rock hard evidence. This is not a dike lacrosse situation, that was some locat county prosecutor on a power trip. The federal government has a 90-95% conviction rate, that should speak louder then anyone who tries to relate this to anything other then the issue at hand. Why anyone would try to relate this to Darfur or child abuse is just using this as a medium to push their opinoins on others. Yes, Darfur and child abuse are horrible things, but just because those are horrible things, does that mean animal abuse is ok?

All the arguments are good, but this one is the absolute best. Some people are more for helping other people, and some people are more for helping animals. Let them be. Just because some people love their animals more, it doesn’t make them evil. They have a purpose in this world.
We need all kinds of people for different problems. If all people only cared about people, who would be the voice for the animals? The animals have as much a right to be here as you and I.
Frankly, anybody who is not enraged about this probably does not like animals that much, so you wouldn’t understand. That’s my personal opinion.
