This makes me so angry still… I watch Animal Planet a lot and know a bit of what the ASPCA officers have to deal with on a daily basis saving all kinds of animals. They are such admirable people. Unfortunately most animals found in a dog-fighting operation are put down, the ones that aren’t are the exception and these are usually the female dogs because they were used only for breeding hence less involved in the direct violence of the ring fights.
I urge you guys to read a great book about the extent of the true problem of dog-fighting rings (including vets who actually treat and ‘help’ these dogs get better again so they can fight again, if it’s a prized dog that is, most are thrown into a river or beaten to death or they let another dog kill it and then just discard it like trash) and abandoned dogs. It’s called “The Man Who Talks to Dogs” by Melinda Roth.
I’m not a member of PETA, should some of you have negative connotations with the organization. I do regularly contribute to animals shelters, however, here in Melbourne Australia, where just like in the States tens of thousands of animals (mostly cats and dogs, some horses, and countless smaller animals no one gets to find out about) are put down due to a combination of BAD, BAD owners who shelf responsibilities once they decide they don’t want their animals anymore, like say, a few months after Christmas or someone’s birthday, etc.
I agree with a previous poster who said that pitbulls are victimized further by mainstream media’s portrayal of the breed. Watch Animal Planet’s ASPCA New York branch’s shows, and you’ll see that the pitbulls they save are such sooks… :)
A great dog breed book I found, and I personally LOVE the objective treatment the vet gives his book, and it’s warm too, it’s by Dr. Bruce Fogle, “The New Encyclopedia of Dogs” published by DK. You’ll even find out that for example, German Shepherds even come in white! (In most countries, including here in Oz, most of these white puppies are usually immediately put down. Apparently in this day and age where by 10th grade you learn about recessive genes, most uninformed breeders insist that white shephers are “not permitted in the rule books/not conforming to standards of the breed/blablabla”. (Funny huh, the connotation of white german shepherds being put down…) The white shepherds are simply a recessive gene, simple as that. There’s a breeder in the state of Queensland who received death threats because he did NOT want to put down these puppies, believe it or not; it’s the other breeders who threatened him.
ANY breed of dog CAN bite, it’s just that the mainstream media latches on to stories in which the breed is usually a reasonably big one. Think about it: lots of children are bitten by smaller breed dogs, but no one reads/hears about it because it doesn’t make “good” newsstory to say “Chihuahua/Maltese/Shih Tzu bites 5-year old boy!!!” It’s a simple matter of the size of the jaw and the size of wound inflicted. Also, we usually don’t get to find out why the bite occured in the first place.
A few years ago here there was a brouhaha story of how a boy was attacked by some dogs. The media made a big deal of how the boy suffered, etc, which I don’t deny, he had some injuries. What really pissed me off however, was the fact that the media said ‘he fell over the fence into the dogs’ yard and they attacked him’. On closer inspection of the news footage however, you realize that the actual side fence they were talking about was almost double the boy’s height. (He was about a meter tall, or just 3′4″ and the side fence was a regular 160cm, or btw 5′3″-5′4″.) Before seeing the footage I’d thought it was a piddly, short side fence but nooooooo, it was a proper tall fence!!! A boy does not FALL OVER a tall fence, he CLIMBS over it, duh…but of course the media made it all the owner’s fault and her dogs. Hey, what dog wouldn’t at least bark when a stranger enters its domain? Let alone climb over a fence? And what exactly was the boy’s parents doing? Didn’t they teach him NOT to climb over people’s fence and enter other people’s property?
Anywho, I hate people who abuse animals like running a dog-fighting ring. One of the ‘equipments’ used by them is treadmill where they make a dog (who’s been starved of food, attention, affection, care, etc.) run on it to build stamina and muscle, and when it slows down, they prod its genital areas with an electrically-charged stick so it’d keep running. I’d volunteer to do THAT to this Vick, but I’d probably have to wait in line though… See if he likes mild-to-high electricution to HIS pathetic nether regions… :lol:

Boy, people really love dogs, I see.

More than they do humans. Interesting. Our American priorities are so screwed up.

Dogs can’t find the cure for cancer or AIDS, humans can. Let’s put this much energy on tracking down child molestors you retards. Caring for humans guarantees our survival. Let’s make that first and stop calling for the torture of humans in the name of animal safety. How bogus.
