Isn’t that the same accent she used in Alexander??? And I thought the Gerard Butler version of Beowulf was bad! LOL!…(Actually he really looked like a Beowulf should look. Maximum Eye Candy…). Beowulf with Butler had an outstanding soundtrack, and the very dramatic landscapes of locations in Iceland to compensate for bad directing, an insipid script, and really bad, cheap, terrible production values. Like, the costumes, the facial hair, and the fake blood. BTW, the Gerard Butler version, Beowulf, is available on DVD as we speak. But you should “get mellow” before you watch it…more fun!

Well, they’re clearly veering pretty far off from the source material, so I can’t say I’m interested. (I’m a huge Anglo-Saxon poetry nerd and own 4 different translations of Beowulf.)

You are very correct in your observations. The thing is, perspective is everything and very often, those of us who are not americans, have front row seats to the dumbing down of america. It is not a pretty sight.

However, not too far from now, even those americans who are currently unable to see the writings on the wall, will have to wake up to the fact that we do not anymore live in a uni-polar world. Its gonna be a very rude awakening.

But to answer your question directly……..the tabloids will continue to succeed for as long as individuals are willing to blindly give-in to the corruption of their own conscience. There’s a population of a-moral people whom the tabloids have identified as their target audience………..people who are willing to accept that right is wrong and that wrong is right; that black is in fact, red and that blue is in fact yellow; etc. As long as they exist, tabloids will continue to have a market. Quint has seen 20 minutes of BEOWULF in 3-D at Comic-Con! Holy Crap!!! How was it?!?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with my impressions of reel 2 of BEOWULF in 3-D

They screened it tonight at the Horton Plaza… Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary presented it to a full theater tonight along with a longer, gorier trailer and the one that hit the net tonight.

You’ve seen the trailer. Imagine it in 3-D and you’ve seen what I’ve seen.

So, I’ll focus on the 20 minutes.

The story starts at the end of Beowulf’s fight with Grendel. I’m sure you’re familiar with the story (if you had to take English in high school, you had to read this), but if you don’t know it, then stop reading it here.

We get Beowulf doing a very primal yell of victory as he holds Grendel’s arm. The monster is trying to get out, but Beowulf screams out at him that he has been defeated by him, calling out his own name as he slams the door on the creature’s arm pit. Grendel’s arm falls to the ground, he howls in pain and slinks off into the snowy night.

Beowulf is butt-ass naked (he decides that this demon can’t be killed by any weapon made by man, so he strips of his armor and armory and fights him completely naked) as the hall calls out his victory.

This section had his genitalia being hidden like an AUSTIN POWERS scene. At one point it’s one of Grendel’s fingers in the extreme foreground, then it’s a helmet, a cup, etc. There was a split afterwards at to how campy this came off, but I thought it was a little distracting, but harmless. I realize they’re going for a PG-13 here and they can’t have Beowulf’s ******* waving around.

The King is awoken (Anthony Hopkins) and told the monster is defeated. At the same time, Grendel stumbles to a body of water where he meets his mother, a water demon, so even the shallow pool Grendel finds takes him to his mother (Angelina Jolie).

Now, this was by far my favorite part of this footage. You don’t see the water demon, nothing more than her hands, as she consoles her dying son. Crispin Glover as Grendel will be the master stroke in this film, I have no doubt. As he dies, he speaks to her… and it’s in this moment we get a piece of Glover’s work. The speech is in this weird half-Danish half-English dialogue. You get what he’s saying. He’s hurt. He’s dying. He takes comfort from his mother, who asks him calmly who did it. He utters an incomprehensible sentence before capping it with “Beowulf,” and then finally slumping, eyes dead.

Let’s talk about Grendel. He’s lumpy, cancerous. He’s obviously mutated. Very fleshy, disproportionate. I visited the production offices a while back and described this design. I love it. His face is mutated so badly his jaw is exposed, teeth sticking out. Yet, in his final moments he didn’t look unkind in a weird way.

Back to the grand hall, Beowulf is congratulated and given treasures.

If you go back and read my set visit report, you’ll see they let me shoot a scene and it was during this moment. I can’t be positive… but I swear to God one of my pieces of framing made it into the film.

The process had a digital world I could walk around with, monitors showing my progress in this world roughly animated. The King (Hopkins) gives a speech and gestures to Grendel’s arm mounted in the Hall. I shot this low, with Hopkins on the extreme right side of the frame, arm outstretched and Grendel’s limb fitting perfectly above his arm, next to his shoulder.

Now, the rest of this scene was nothing like I shot it, but I’m going to pretend that was my shot. Hehe

This sequence gave us good looks at Ray Winstone as Beowulf (doesn’t look a goddamn thing like him), Brendan Gleeson, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich and Robin Wright-Penn.

Another good moment is a nightmare Beowulf has as he’s visited by the vengeful demon mother who wants a child to replace the one taken from her. She appears to Beowulf as the Queen (Wright-Penn) and when he doesn’t take to her advances, a part of her demon being shows through and attacks. He awakes, screaming, to find that it was a nightmare. But then he sees that the bodies of the rest of the men in the hall… maybe 20 or 30… are strung up in the rafters. Pretty fucked up and gory.

He gets the story from the King, finds out about the Demon mother. Beowulf flips. “How many do I have to kill? Who’s next? The demon father, the demon brother, the demon aunt,” etc. Hopkins pretty much says that he has nothing to worry about from the demon’s father (insinuating it was he himself who sired Grendel) and Beowulf and Wiglaf (Gleeson) go in search for the monster.

This was a pretty beautiful scene as Beowulf along investigates a deep, magical cave. He’s slowly stalked by the demon mother until she reveals herself. When she appears to him, she slowly walks out of the water a naked Angelina Jolie. Liquid gold moves over her body, revealing all by the nipples and cootch (again, thank you PG-13). She seduces Beowulf, literally stroking his sword until it dissolves into a gooey puddle (nice imagery, yeah?), promises him his own kingdom, riches, fame… all he has to do sire her a child.

The animation didn’t look completely finished to me. It was a little inconsistent. For instance, Robin Wright-Penn never quite looked right to me. She was the most “video game cut scene” looking of the characters. I don’t know if it was just because he has such a detailed, brilliant face, but Hopkins was by far the best looking of the group.

For those worried about the eyes being dead, like in POLAR EXPRESS, then you have nothing to worry about. What is left is a little stiffness to the movements and some troubled mouth movements. Now, none of them are huge deals, but when you watch this movie you’re going to be so amazed at what they achieved for most of it, that any little thing that can break that illusion will stand out to you.

On the whole, it was beautiful. It might not be life-changing… but who knows? I’ll need to see it in context, but my major worry wasn’t the animation, design or color palate, but if the acting was going to feel stagey, since that’s how they shot the performance capture.

I guess I needn’t have been worried with such great actors, but even good actors can lose focus. Here, though, everybody was amazing. Like I said, I can’t wait to see more Crispin Glover as Grendel. So amazing.

The 3-D was well done. Again, not in your face, but giving everything a greater depth.

and although he was scrawny and dark as a vampire, didn’t think he was all that goodlooking. Thought Frank Langella made a better vampire (but what do I know? at the time I didn’t foresee Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, along with Antonio Banderas would come along one day. Nor Gary Oldman for that matter).

Now that Johnny Depp would make a fantastic bloodsucker. He already has the gaunt and eerie look down pat.

We know about loss, but what about the loss among others?

A Mighty Heart has some mighty fine acting. The movie is, of course, the story of Mariane Pearl, the wife of Daniel Pearl, the journalist who was slain in Pakistan in 2003 by al-Qaida terrorists.

As I exited the theater after the movie, I had the expected reactions: appreciation for Angelina Jolie’s Oscar-worthy performance, horror over the way Pearl died, queasiness about the world we live in now.

There was another reaction too. After hearing Jolie’s character, Mariane, emit cries of grief after first learning of her husband’s violent death, I thought for a moment of all the Iraqi war widows and orphans whose similar cries of anguish will never be heard around the world.

The fact is, for every Mariane Pearl, there are countless, faceless women on the other side who have, more or less, suffered similar situations.

There has been a spate of movies in recent years based on some true events surrounding 9/11, and the war on terror — United 93, Flight 93, World Trade Center, and now A Mighty Heart. These movies have done their job of chronicling American stories of loss, courage and grief.

But these movies could do a disservice if we watched them and recognized and glorified the loss only on our side. Loss on this side would be more poignant if it acknowledged and empathized with the loss on the other side as well.

The fact is the protagonists of these movies are fortunate to be able to tell their stories to the world — they live in a milieu that encourages the telling of one’s story in book form, movie, or TV interview.

But there are stories on the other side that will never be fleshed out in movie form, set to background music, played by a glamorous actress, or affect audiences with their poignancy.

I’m thinking specifically of certain stories I’ve read since the Iraq war began. I’m thinking about the five children who witnessed the accidental shooting of their parents by U.S. troops in the Iraqi city of Tall Afar.

I’m thinking of the thousands of Iraqi housewives I read about recently who, after the death or disappearance of their main breadwinners have fled to Syria and Jordan and taken to prostitution in order to be able to live.

I’m thinking of the thousands of Iraqi orphans who, traumatized by the war, may turn into tomorrow’s jihadis who’ll “terrorize” our children.

Who will tell their stories?

Perhaps the best message to come out of the book and movie is from Mariane, who took a strong decision after her husband’s death. She was determined, she said, that her loss wouldn’t change her in a fundamental way, or alter her worldview. She wasn’t, as the result of the tragedy in her life, going to become fearful, distrustful, cynical.

In an America that has strayed a little from her founding ideals, and grown to be angry, closed and fearful, that is a mighty potent message to take away from A Mighty Heart.

I was so disappointed recently in Hilary Clinton when she claimed she wouldn’t talk to countries on Bush’s Evil Axis chart — most of the people in my family were taken aback by that….you don’t get anywhere by NOT talking, by NOT understanding or empathizing with others as this article points out. I’m really less inclined to vote for her on the basis of that alone.

Too true. That’s why when trolls come here harping about AMH and box office, then I know that they have truly miss (and probably have not seen) the message of this Movie. AMH was made on a budget of 16 million. It will make a profit. It is a movie that resonates with you and shows a broader world than the one we live in. People are so isolated and think that it funny to promote hate, Team BS,nasty rumors and make evil comments about a person’s beloved Mother who has passed away. It is because the internet gives people that power.
AMH is a movie that BP, AJ and Plan B can be proud of. AJ is a very good actress and I am looking forward to more of her films.

I can’t wait for this film to come out.

I admit that I drink bottled water. The water where I live is very hard. I’ve installed one of those water purification thing at my faucet but the water still does not taste good enough for me to drink 8 glasses a day. My husband and I do recycle almost all our paper, plastic, and aluminum products we use.

I am glad that there has been no sign of the Jolie -Pitts the last few days.

Just had a dinner party with guests from Paris and made a huge thing of Choucroute again with an entire bottle of Riesling… I remember Jolie-Pitt were shopping for Courcroute back in their Paris days :)

I never have been a fan of bottled water but it sure is conveninent when you are out and need water, especially to give to the kids (since when they want water, it’s NOW NOW NOW! :)

I do think environmentally it sucks (to manufacture and recycle those bottles, energy consumed etc etc) but it’s more pathetic to become the face of some DUMB water, then upon hearing the criticism, turn around and say she takes ‘3 minute shower and brush teeth in the shower, too’. Let’s see, dentists recommend at least 2 minutes of brushing. For one who has a very reputable long mane, which is her strongest asset, how long does it take to shampoo, rinse, condition, rinse, wash your body, then brush her teeth? THREE minutes? Pleeeze. Always a FRAUD, still a FRAUD.

Robert Zemeckis’ Beowulf made its public debut tonight at ComicCon in 3-D. The film, which promises violence, sex, heroism, and death, has had only one reel (of six, most likely) fully rendered and outputted by the computers, which is what would shown and which compromised all but a handful of shots that appear in the trailer for the film, which is also premiering here in San Diego.

The Los Angeles Times piece hinted at it the possibility of it being a PG-13, but tonight co-writer Roger Avery, who appeared to talk about the film to the crowd of about 300 in the UA Horton Plaza theater with co-writer Neil Gaiman, confirmed it. It’s a funny thing, with 300 making over $200 million domestic with the R, the restraint of PG-13 is an odd choice. But maximizing the return on an expensive film is always a priority and Zemeckis clearly knows how to work the edge, as was shown in a section of the film with a naked Beowulf whose genitals are covered by all sorts of items. Less covered is Angelina Jolie’s very familiar looking digitized character who has all the curves and none of the R-rated bits.

In any case… the footage is beautiful and compelling. It is a kind of shock to the system, watching something so real and so drawn-looking at the same time and being drawn into the performances like normal. And you are.

Reel Two starts at the end of the fight between Beowulf and Grendel, who is a far more hideous variation on Gollum/Smeagol. And watching him suffering, the mind is stimulated in a variety of ways. You are watching a character. You are watching an animated image that is harsh and ugly and beautiful in its way. And you are watching the artistry of Zemeckis and his team, working back and forth between the two universes.

The big acting is not really in Reel Two, though it is intense in a physical way. The highlight is probably Ms. Jolie emerging from the waters, as a kind of gold muck slips and slides over her naked body in a way that, although animated, is undeniably sexy in a very connected, human way. Jolie is a unique figure in all this, since she was not only in the experimental Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, but in Tomb Raider, she is very much a walking cartoon of a woman.

From November 2007 to May 2008, we will have two masters (one who launched the other) offering two very different aesthetics working some similar territory, Zemeckis here and Spielberg with Indy 4. And while I don’t think anyone has to choose between them, we will be in a movie universe in which both can live.

It is very easy to imagine, based on this small amount of footage, that Beowulf could be a huge smash that critics can actually get behind and that it could be a serious Academy player in the way Lord of the Rings was. Though this is not a trilogy, it seems ready to break even more ground in a real way. (The issue of acting nominations was something Avery & Gaiman considered out loud in the room tonight. With big names like Hopkins, Jolie, and Malkovich, one thinks they might actually turn that trick if all the pieces come together. The great Ray Winstone, who doesn’t look like himself, might have trouble on that basis alone.)

On the other hand, it could turn out to be a niche film that turns off the adults. And perhaps that’s why they are going PG-13… to have it all, not just some.

This sneak peek stinks of greatness. Let’s hope by November it’s stinking to high heaven. What could be more thrilling for film lovers?

Too beautiful to be understood

The first time I saw Angelina Jolie she was shimmering in the moonlight of the garden of Hollywood’s excluside Chateau Marmont hotel.

She was wearing jeans and a silky top, but radiated an unnerving sexiness. Her eyes locked into conversation with whoever intrigued her. It was as if they were the only person in the world, which was either charming or shy, depending on which way you looked at her.

Men stared in slack-jawed lust, a little afraid of her. Women stared at the ground or at each other in a mumbling, pouting sort of way.

This was long before there was Angelina and Brad. It was even before Billy Bob.

It seems that Angelina - striking, sexy, strong - is built in a way that women do not warm to. They see her as Alpha Vamp, too gothic to be a real mother.

Well, not any more - she’s having twins. There was never a love cauldron that raised more heat than the Brad/Jennifer/Angelina pot.

Female columnists around the world declared, “Angelina has a mouth designed for hoovering up husbands”.

Slogan T-shirts went on sale last year. Team Aniston outsold Team Jolie 25-1 because women identified with Jennifer’s pain. She was the victim.

She’d been dumped, like every one of them. Angelina is a different kind of woman. Just because she does not wear her pain on her sleeve and play the victim card, it does not mean she’s not vulnerable.

Actually, she does wear her pain on her arm. She has a tattoo, in Latin, that says “What Nourishes Me Also Destroys Me”. She’s a complex individual who has led a complicated life.

She says, “I think it’s more important to be understood than to be loved”.

Maybe that’s the same thing. What nobody seems to understand in this triangle is Brad left Jennifer. Angelina didn’t beg him or cajole him, manipulate or hoover him.

It’s shameful to perpetuate a myth of misogyny that says she was the one lacking in empathy or morals, especially when she states, “To be intimate with a married man when my own father cheated on my mother is not something that I could forgive. I couldn’t look at myself in the morning if I did that. It’s not nice to be breaking up a marriage.”

She was working on a mission in Niger when news reached the world that Jennifer and Brad had finally separated. Interesting the way that chauvinistic prejudice works. Brad was married. Angelina was single. It was Brad’s decision to end his marriage. This is all the evidence we have for sure, and surely it’s unfair for Angelina to carry all the blame.

Why, as women, do we identify with the victim? Angelina is not like other women. This makes her idiosyncratic, powerful, mesmerising. It should not make us hate her. She’s emotionally articulate. She’s lived, she’s learnt, she’s suffered, she’s smart.

She won an Oscar for her role in Girl Interrupted, set in a mental institution, and a Golden Globe for Gia, as the heroin-addicted bisexual model.

She kicked ass with last year’s blockbuster Mr and Mrs Smith, in which she literally tried to blow up her onscreen husband, Pitt.

She says, “If I have three million, I know one of them I can live without.”

She doesn’t just turn up and smile. She lobbies Congress to get aid, to get Bills passed, to change the world. In her role as Goodwill Ambassador she has visited more than 15 countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Haiti, Kosovo and Sierra Leone. In Pakistan, it was after the earthquake. Brad was with her. She has effected a transformation in him too.

“I put my head together, cover my tattoos, get into my suits, look clean, don’t dress sexy and try to present the woman that I’m not sure I am, but would like to aspire to be a little more. Everyone is always expecting me to be, or it’s been easier, to be the other girl.”

That other girl was from the dark side. The one who admitted to experimenting with drugs, knives and other women. She spoke about them all with searing honesty in a hope to explain herself, alienated her further from the world.

“I was always the punk in school. I didn’t feel clean or pretty. I felt interesting, odd or dark. I could understand the darker things, the moody things, the more emotional things.”

She grew up relating more to pain than happiness. She married actor Jonny Lee Miller when she was in her early 20s wearing black rubber trousers and a white shirt on which she had scrawled his name in blood. They split, but she is still close to him, saying that she was just too young.

“I wanted more from him than I could give him.”

This was the other girl who was hard on herself, who thought she had nothing to give - and now she’s giving so much.

She never thought she would be a mother. She was never the kind of child who was asked to babysit. In fact, when she needed to cry in movies, all she would do was extend her hand and imagine a child taking hold of it. Then the tears would come.

“I was always sure that I would never know that feeling.”

That feeling came when she first picked up baby Maddox at the orphanage in Cambodia. He was the last baby she visited that day. She held him and held him and when he opened his eyes there was a connection that made her whole life change.

With those eyes locked she fitted in a way that she never thought she could. No more slashing herself with knives “just to be able to feel something”.

Now holding Maddox was as profound.

“I held him for the longest time. When he finally woke up and stared at me we stared at each other and I was crying and he smiled.

“My discomfort with children was because I always assumed

I could never make them happy because I was accused of being dark. I wasn’t sure if I could be a great, loving, perfect mom, but

I wanted to be, so bad. He smiled and we hung for a few hours and I could make him happy and we felt like a family.”

Feeling like a happy family was something she had never had and, subsequently, jealously guarded.

She didn’t suddenly fall out of love with Billy Bob Thornton, to whom she was married at the time. Suddenly Maddox was her prime and primal concern. She didn’t think Billy Bob would be a great father to Maddox. “He wasn’t ready.”

This may seem, to the uninitiated, ruthless, but it was also strong and protective. She had changed dramatically. Maddox consumed her world. She didn’t want to be that person who carried a pendant of Billy Bob’s dried blood around her neck. She was more interested in flesh and blood.

She was out of the darkness because of Maddox and was determined he would never know its shadow. Her relationship with her own father had been at times close - and at times destructive. He disapproved of her adopting Maddox. She made the decision to keep him out of her life also, to protect Maddox.

“If you have people who put knots in your stomach, it makes you feel bad about yourself. You cry and then you get them out of your life. Be strong and focus your love elsewhere.

“I had some beautiful times with my father and I don’t think he’s a bad person. I just think we’re not a good family - there’s far too much pain.

“I never wanted to come home and yell at Mad because I was stressed after a bad lunch with my father.

“I am a good mother and a good friend. I am a good adoptive mother because I don’t see blood as family. I see it as time and love. You earn it.”

Although this may seem unorthodox, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a logic that is both profound and true. One must take into consideration that her childhood was painful.

Children from troubled upbringings usually only revisit that trouble in their own families, or decide that that will be too painful an experience and therefore never want children of their own.

Angelina had been adamant that she only wanted to adopt children, both because of this past and because “giving birth to one meant I could give one less child a home”.

Now she’s expecting twins, I see this more as a submission to Brad than an angle to ensnare him.

She is the Alpha female which other Alpha females are genetically programmed to destroy. Alpha females can only attract Alpha males. That is their problem and why they often end up lonely.

What she was looking for in a man was a real man.

Before she and Brad got together this was her plea: “I know if I saw a man who was great with my children that would be it for me.”

In fact, she staunchly protected her children from even meeting men that she might become involved with. She didn’t want any darkness or disappointment and would rather sleep alone with Maddox saying,

“It was Maddox who made me feel like a woman”.The way the media reacted it was as if she used her children as man bait, or at least Brad bait.

Since when did a single mother with two children under four become sexually compelling? Most men would run a mile. Is it only Angelina that makes the exception to the rule and is that why we hate her?

She doesn’t play with her children as a Hollywood fashion accessory. She lives in Buckinghamshire and loves Legoland more than the red carpet. She uses her fame to raise money, not sell herself.

“The press can say what they like about my films or whoever I’ve dated, but misinterpreting something to do with refugees could affect them in a bad way. Maybe the mistakes I’ve made and how I’ve recovered might help somebody. Nobody identifies with a perfect person.”

And here’s the problem. We misjudge her as being too controlled, too perfect, too lusted after. She doesn’t see herself like that at all.

She’s been linked with many of her co-stars, but just because she looks like she has a voracious sexual appetite, doesn’t mean she doesn’t starve herself.

“There was the time that I hadn’t had sex for a year.”

We see the perfect Lara Croft body. We see a luxuriant sexual appetite. She sees herself nervous at addressing Congress and shy as a public speaker, and worries about her capacity to juggle her work and her babies.

When she first got Maddox she had never changed a baby before.

In the middle of Africa with a 7-month-old infant she was daunted.

“I feel most beautiful . . . when I’m in the middle of a field or in the jungle with no make-up on.

Usher will marry Tameka Foster at record executive LA Reid’s home in New York’s Hamptons on Saturday afternoon, PEOPLE has learned.

Among the 70 to 100 guests expected at the private, outdoor celebration are Usher’s mother and former manager, Jonetta Patton.

This is the first marriage for the R&B singer and actor, 28 (real name: Usher Raymond), and the second for Foster, 37, a stylist who has worked with Lauryn Hill and Toni Braxton – as well as with her about-to-be-husband.

Usher and Foster, engaged since earlier this year, first became a serious item a year and a half ago, she’s said. In January, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together, due in the fall.

Foster was previously married to Noontime Music cofounder Ryan Glover, with whom she has three children.

“He just accepted me for who I am,” Foster, told Essence.com last month about her relationship with Usher. “I have flaws, I have an attitude problem. ? Overall, I have issues that a person could either love or hate, but he accepted me completely. And every day he still treats me like we just met.

Earlier this month, in an open letter to PEOPLE, Usher addressed rumors that he was somehow being coerced into getting married. “I am happy, excited, completely clear and independent on my direction, feelings, decisions,” he wrote, “and I am NOT BEING LED.”

Later this year the star plans to release his follow-up to his multi-platinum-selling album, Confessions.

IF anybody has forgotten how much wild living Angelina Jolie has packed into her 32 years, it’s conveniently tallied up like a kinky scorecard in a new book that sizes her up as having more talent as a publicity machine than an actress.

The pouty-lipped Oscar winner is “the modern Lana Turner because her filmography is not really the source of her fame . . . Despite winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2000 for ‘Girl, Interrupted,’ Jolie has an overall filmography that is less than stellar,” screen historian Jeanine Basinger writes in “The Star Machine.” Basinger singles out such Jolie turkeys as “Taking Lives,” “Beyond Borders,” “Life or Something Like It” and “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.”

“Fans don’t need to watch her films . . . Her roles are only pale imitations of her off-screen self,” continues Basinger, a professor at Wesleyan College. She then recites the sordid highlights of Jolie’s life:

“[She twice] married and divorced very young; publicly kissed her brother a little too hard; admitted to cutting herself; made vague references to drugs; dated a woman; expressed a yearning to be ‘taken down’ by a suitably dominant individual of either gender; declared a willingness to try bondage; wore a vial of second husband [Billy Bob] Thornton’s blood (and divorced him amid allegations of his insatiable sex addiction);” and “announced that she satisfies her post-divorce sexual needs by having flings with men in motels.”

She also, the book recounts, “adopted a boy from Cambodia, a boy from Vietnam, and a girl from Ethiopia; allegedly delivered the death blow to Brad Pitt’s staggering marriage to Jennifer Aniston; conceived Pitt’s child; [has] given birth; and in the middle of all this, found time to take a genuine and serious mission to the United Nations on behalf of the world’s children.”

Basinger says Jolie, back in the days of the Hollywood star system, “could have found steady work playing larger-than-life, even terrifying female characters. Today, she has become one herself . . . It is not a cultural accident that Jolie’s one serious, Oscar-winning role was that of a mental patient.”

Jolie’s manager, Guyer Kosinski, did not answer a detailed e-mail.

Hollywood plans strategy for promotion of war-based films

Washington, July 28 (ANI): The not so good reception of ‘A Mighty Heart’, a film about late Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, by the audiences has prompted Hollywood studios to form marketing strategies to sell prospective flicks on the Middle East situation.

Two of the marketing strategies on which most of the studios seem to have decided to rely on are non-concealment of the subject matter and tailoring the campaign to the film.

The producers of ‘A Mighty Heart’ at Par Vantage have admitted that it was a big mistake on their part to open the movie in wide release, concentrating on Angelina Jolie’s star power, instead of acknowledging the film’s delicate subject matter.

One of the reasons why film buffs may not want to see films based on the Iraq war is reported to be round-the-clock broadcasts on news channels like CNN, which take the real account to the general public.

A number of war-themed and political-themed movies were made during the Second World War. The success of films like ‘Babel’, ‘Syriana’, ‘The Constant Gardener’, and ‘Hotel Rwanda’ has refuelled that craze among the filmmakers.

The continuing support from Hollywood studios is also a factor behind producers’ inclination towards such themes.

Universal production prexy Donna Langley concedes that it’s “always a challenge getting people to come to movies and see things they are trying to escape,” but says as a studio, Universal tries to support filmmakers who want to make these type of films.

But the fusillade of war movies has become a cause of concern for studios, and they are now fine-tuning their marketing strategies.

“We wanted to get ours out sooner, rather than later. I don’t envision it a platform, and I don’t envision opening it on 3,000″ screens,” Variety magazine quoted New Line president of marketing Russell Schwartz as saying. (ANI)
