Brad Pitt’s Global Green Home
Brad Pitt looks over Global Green’s sustainable, low-income home before a milestone celebration in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana on Tuesday. This neighborhood was completely leveled when Hurricane Katrina hit two years ago. (See Part II of this set of pictures here.)
Earlier today, it was announced that Brad will sit down for another exclusive interview with NBC’s Jolie-Pitt family correspondent Ann Curry, airing Wednesday and Thursday on The Today Show.

I read an article a few days ago about how the people of NO hate the design that won the contest. They feel that the panel and BP are out of touch with reality when it comes to designing and planning homes and neighborhoods for those affected by this disaster.

It was written by and architect who was at the meeting after the winner was announced and NO redidents stood up pleading not to use the design but to chose some other. Teh most they got was to look into redesigning the lay out of the area but not the houses –people where heated and very disappointed. They said that the design did not fit in with the old NO look - way too modern and looked like a housing project.
am proud to be a fan of the family,they are always trying to make the world a better place,i hope more people appreciate what they do because there are people that need help

This project is in partnership with the Home Depot Foundation.It has to be a worthy project otherwise the foundation (with a Home Depot name) doesnt just dish out money and partner with you.

56 no comments- I don’t know about how in NO works regarding building new neighborhood or building new homes or new park..or whatever. We have community meeting with local city officials, they would listen to everyone opinion about certain projects and will vote on it, if there are so many people object to a project, the builder usually has to re-design or some how represent a new plan to fit in that community. I guess everything is ok, because they are building those homes, therefore everyone must agreed on the design already.
Look, if I’m one of those family in NO, who lost my home to the flood, I would be very happy that my new home is a sound, solid, eco-friendly and safe. I don’t know what was the neighborhood looked like before, but I’m sure, it’s better than nothing at all right now.
This is a good project. It takes more money to build. But in the long run, it saves money.

Well, I am glad B&A didn’t give up on NO. It’s a beautiful city, with a unique culture. NO is to the US, what Venice is to Italy. If the Italians (and people around the world) have not given up on Venice, so shouldn’t we on NO. We have the means to do it, and we should do it to preserve that part of our heritage. Remember how Jackie Onassis fought very hard to save Station Union in NYC? and now we are so grateful she did? We need to save NO, because of it’s historical, cultural and architectural significance. The houses in the Garden District are so beautiful, just like the houses in Charleston and Savannah, but to me they are even more beautiful because they are set in larger lots, with luscious gardens that enhance their appearance. NO is known around the world for its beauty and culture. We don’t have too many historical sites in the US, we need to preserve as many as we can. It’s too easy to destroy things. Preservation of the past creates a heritage. Sorry for my rant, but I just get really pissed when I hear people saying we need to abandon NO, and build an entirely new city on a better located spot.

“After we each presented our work we had a Q&A with the audience. The members of the audience that were from New Orleans, passionately attacked the “award winning” Global Green design. They were outraged that this project had been selected. They were upset that it had no resemblance to the existing neighborhood, either with the architecture or the plan. One woman stood up and explained to the architect that the “Historic” buildings weren’t old and out dated. They were REALLY well designed, NOT because of the balustrades, brackets and architectural details, but because of the tall ceilings, cross ventilation and the materials. She was great because she elevated the conversation away from style to practical common sense.
The residents in the room were disgusted that modern designs were being imposed on them. The architect admitted that the residents that he had spoken to didn’t like the modern designs, but that didn’t stop him from proceeding with his work. It seemed more about his personal design exploration, rather than a project based in reality or any form of practicality. The amazing thing about the day was that no one in the room, NOLA residents or even the SLC students, were buying it - or cutting him any slack.
One resident pointed out that the architecture could either support or destroy a community. From the planning of where buildings go to the interior plans of where the kitchen is located. He went on to tell the architect of the GG Design that his building would destroy the community and probably cause people to kill themselves.”

People are always bitching about modern design. It’s not unusual to resist change, especially in your own neighborhood. But modern design can be successfully incorporated into already established neighborhoods, even into established and dated tastes.
What did these “protesters” want? French design with lace balconies, Italianate villas? That’s not going to happen. Though I can envision a very nice Italianate modern design. These need to be affordable, efficient and easy to build. I’m sure with appropriate landscaping and personal interior touches, residents will be very happy.

I wonder how much of the design was necessitated by the green features and the restrictions usually placed on low-income housing. If Global Green wanted NOLA residents input I guess they would have been on the panel. I have two super ugly complexes in my area and tacky giant, pink ,line-to-line McMansions cluttering up the headland near my home. As far as I can tell ugly architecture of all types is rampant and no one cares about community standards anymore anyway so why should Global Green?

Thanks for posting. Having grown up in N.O., I must admit I wasn’t happy with the design. There were others I liked better. But it’s not like people have a whole lot of options. New Orleans citizens are still living in those small FEMA trailers and it’s HORRENDOUS that a major, HISTORICAL city is left to flounder like N.O. has been. It breaks my heart.

Brad and Angie don’t need to put it all out there to be hot and sexy — their W Shoot 2005 was freaking hoty and they didn’t even have to try.
Angelina and kids are not here (NO) but I can tell you one thing for certain. If nothing else Brad has been here for the long haul. People can agree or disagree with him but he’s bringing attention to an area that needs it desperately.
He and Angelina own a home in the French Quarter which also proves their commitment. If they only show up one week a year the paparazzi come and take their pictures and eat in our restaurants and sleep in our motels and the rest of the world can see the life goes on. NEW ORLEANS Brad Pitt toured the site of an environmentally friendly home being built in New Orleans’ hard-hit Lower 9th Ward based on the winning design in a competition launched by the actor a year ago to help the area recover from Hurricane Katrina.
Wearing khaki pants, a T-shirt and hard hat, Pitt walked through the partially constructed home Tuesday, pointing out its many “green” features, including blue walls treated with a non-toxic repellant for mold and termites.
“There’s light coming in from all sides and a lot of ventilation,” said Pitt, standing in what will be the living room of the house. “A lot of thought has gone into this house.”
The three-bedroom, single-family home is the first of five slated for the Holy Cross section of the Lower 9th Ward based on the winning design in a competition launched in 2006 by Pitt and the environmental organization Global Green USA.
The winning design, submitted by Matthew Berman and Andrew Kotchen of Workshop APD in New York, includes energy saving appliances, a cistern, toilets designed for water conservation, soy-based insulation, paperless drywall, solar panels and a roof on the second-story deck designed to help insulate the house and channel water to the cistern.
The house is also designed to relieve some of the burden of bills for low-income families, the predominant residents of the Lower 9th Ward before Katrina. Pitt said electric bills will be cut by 75 percent; water use, by half.
Developers broke ground on the home in May and should be finished in the next month or two. It will serve as a model home and visitor center while construction of other houses is under way. Besides the single-family homes, plans call for an 18-unit apartment complex and community center.
Global Green plans to sell the homes, giving preference to former residents of the neighborhood.
Pitt and Angelina Jolie purchased an early-1830s masonry mansion in the French Quarter for $3.5 million in January.
“There’s so much of this culture here that is unlike any other city that we have,” he said. “It’s a feeling that I can’t quite explain, but I love being a part of it.”
He expressed disappointment at the slow pace of recovery in much of the city.
“We can’t ignore the fact that we’ve got to push to get these levees taken care of and correct the engineering mistakes of the past and get these wetlands taken care of for this city,” he said. “It is something I’m quite aware of and wish to remain vocal about.”
He said he, Jolie and their children would tour the Holy Cross site privately.

#48 LIAR — sorry - you lose - I already posted it a few days ago - go back on one of the other jolie pitt threads and you will find it there. It was written by and architect who was at the meeting after the winner was announced and NO redidents stood up pleading not to use the design but to chose some other. Teh most they got was to look into redesigning the lay out of the area but not the houses –people where heated and very disappointed. They said that the design did not fit in with the old NO look - way too modern and looked like a housing project.

People are always bitching about modern design. It’s not unusual to resist change, especially in your own neighborhood. But modern design can be successfully incorporated into already established neighborhoods, even into established and dated tastes.
What did these “protesters” want? French design with lace balconies, Italianate villas? That’s not going to happen. Though I can envision a very nice Italianate modern design. These need to be affordable, efficient and easy to build. I’m sure with appropriate landscaping and personal interior touches, residents will be very happy.

I’m a fan but will say since Brad and Angie have been together, they both have not looked their best. I thought when Angie went to Cannes to promote Shark tale, she looked her best. I like this new manly Brad, not the pretty boy look he used to have but he still looks very messy.
But once I see them together, smiling and happy, the lack of fashion sense and looking worn out doesn’t really matter. They’ve got four kids and have had a busy year. It’s understandable.

Brad is doing what others should be doing, bringing attention to an area that was devastated by the effects of a natural disaster that no one could control, and that the government has conveniently pushed into a dark corner and is ignoring. BRAD MADE A PROMISE TO TAKE SOME POSITVE ACTION AND HE IS KEEPING THAT PROMISE. Housing is one of the critical needs in NOLA and any increase in the availablity of housing is essential to the recovery efforts in the area.
Brad is a really good guy. He did not just start something and walk away, he is sticking to this project and seeing it to completion. Let’s see if any of his critics step forward and put their money and efforts where their mouths are. So far none have done so.

It is good that construction in the 9th ward in New Orleans has begun. BP and Global Green are doing a good thing. It is easy for critics to make snide remarks and not realize the full devastation of Katrina. Global Green is bringing much needed housing in an area that was mostly ignored because of the residents who are mainly minorities and lower-income. The fact that BP, Global Green and its partners are following through is very admirable. It is easy to sit in judgment, much harder to get out there and make a difference. As a person that was raised in the Gulf Coast area and attended college in New Orleans, I appreciate the effort of all involved.
New Orleans is a great city full of culture and history. The fact that BP and AJ have made an investment in New Orleans by buying a House in the French Quarters is also a good thing. New Orleans is a great city. It deserves a chance to strive again. Best wishes to BAMPZS.

Less than a month after the champ is resurrected, Jesse James will be assassinated.
Brad Pitt’s eagerly awaited The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford blasts its way into theatres Sept. 21, right after its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie, which stars Pitt as the notorious outlaw and Casey Affleck as his killer, filmed in and around Calgary in the fall and winter of 2005.
Why did it take so long to make the trek into theatres?
Those stubborn Hollywood gremlins known as “creative differences.”
Director reportedly Andrew Dominick delivered a three-hour, deliberately paced — i.e.: slow — film noir that wasn’t action-packed enough for the suits at Warner Bros.
A protracted post-production process saw Jesse James re-edited — once by Pitt himself — and test-screened repeatedly, usually a certain sign of pending disaster. However, in recent months that initial toxic buzz has taken a surprising turn towards the positive. Advance word online — from those anonymous folks who say they’ve seen it — is strong, particularly for Pitt and Affleck’s performances.
If fans think they’ve been waiting a long time, the delay has felt even longer for provincial officials who courted the project for two years before cameras finally rolled.
“We just kept the faith,” says Alberta film commissioner Dan Chugg.
“We’re looking forward to the movie. It’s getting some really good reviews now.”
The western began filming in Alberta in McKinnon Flats southwest of the city and subsequently shot in Heritage Park, the Fairmont Palliser Hotel and K-Country.
Calgarians Dustin Bollinger, 7, and Brooklynn Proulx, 6, play Jesse’s children.
Sam Shepard, Mary Louise Parker, Zooey Deschanel and Sam Rockwell also star.

Yeah it wasn’t long was it? It isn’t long before a lot of these critics/haters true colors show. They start out all passive aggressive and then bam here comes the hate. It is one thing to be a die-hard BP fan, another to smear a woman who has done a lot of good with her humanitarian work both in the US and internationally. Both BP and AJ are doing good works. AJ has been a UN Ambassador for many years. Her commitment and help is wide-ranging and has benefited refugees through the world. They are committed partners and they work well as a team in their personal/professional lives. People really should get a grip and move on.

Well, one now knows how warped your mind is. Angelina has never ever said that she hates her country, never ever, not once. You just pulled that lie about Angelina out of the air because you couldn’t stop yourself from going negative on Angelina. 4 Q I agree with you. Most government officals, and others are sitting on their asses waiting for the mother ship to come and bring them something. I do believe local citizens were on the board. I remember seeing pictures and reading articles. No someone is doing something and here they come out of the woodwork with their negative comments. The design losers are saying their designs were better. Sounds like sour grapes to me. I honestly believe once people see how much money they can save on electric, water and heating they will start to appreciate the houses. Also once the project is finished and trees are planted and sidwalks are in it will look better. Those old shotguns houses were not energy efficient. Everyone can ***** and complain. Few will step up to the plate and try to help. Now those who want to bash Angie and Brad have a new topic. But I bet they/he will receive more praise from enlighted and informed people. And also from those residents who will be lucky enough to receive a money, and energy saving house than those who want to find fault. Hell if people don’t like it, sell/give me one. During the winter when your heating bill is cut by 75% they will sing the praises of this modern design. If you don’t do anything you don’t hear complaints, but you don’t receive praise either. NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Calling Hurricane Katrina a “man-made disaster,” actor Brad Pitt said on Tuesday he remains committed to helping the city recover from the storm.
Nearly two years after the August 29, 2005 hurricane, the “Ocean’s Thirteen” star said he was at times dismayed by the pace of recovery in New Orleans, where he and partner Angelina Jolie own an elegant townhouse in the historic French Quarter.
Pitt was in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood to tour an ecologically sustainable single-family home being built by Global Green USA, an environmental group he backs.
The actor praised the house in the Holy Cross area of the ward as a “small victory” for efforts to rebuild the city, but said, “it’s hard to find an overall victory when you see how slowly everything is still moving. And Katrina was a man-made disaster. This house is a man-made solution.”
Pitt said the city’s flood-protection defenses must be restored before displaced residents feel confident enough to rebuild.
“We’ve got to push to get these levees taken care of in the correct fashion,” he told reporters at a news conference in the hurricane-ravaged working class neighborhood.
The house that Pitt toured, loosely modeled on the distinctive New Orleans “shotgun” style of long, narrow homes, will generate almost all its electricity from 28 roof-mounted solar panels, said Global Green USA president Matt Petersen
Global Green hopes to use the house, which should be completed this fall, as a prototype for the neighborhood. Built not far from the banks of the Mississippi River and raised by three feet on concrete pilings, it is above sea level.
Some in the area, which was not as badly flooded as others in the city, are rebuilding. But a lack of funds have kept most from starting fresh.
Levee repairs are ongoing and engineers differ over how the new levees will fare in a major storm.
The environmental group has pledged to create a residential community of “green” structures, including an 18-unit, low-income apartment building near the Mississippi.
Pitt, 43, said the redevelopment project could help encourage people whose homes were destroyed in the storm to return and rebuild in a more environmentally conscious fashion.
“We knew we couldn’t bring back the families and friends that were lost, bring back the heirlooms, the pictures,” Pitt said. “But maybe, in the process of rebuilding, we could build something smarter, and create a better way of life for those people who live here.”

Thanks for the great video. Loved hearing Brad saying “and as a father”. He revels in fatherhood, and Angelina understood just how important children were to him. It took the love of a good woman to make him all the man he was supposed to be.

I can exclusively tell you that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be hitting New York’s über-rich beach getaway for an intimate dinner to raise funds for Pitt’s work in helping rebuild Katrina-devastated New Orleans.
The soiree will be hosted by two Tribeca Film Festival cofounders, superproducer Jane Rosenthal and her businessman husband Craig Hatkoff.
Pitt is currently in the Big Easy promoting his efforts. Ann Curry recently interviewed him for the Today show, which will air the chat in two parts tomorrow and Thursday.
And this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing from Mr. Pitt in New Orleans. I’m told he has several more projects in the works, but they won’t be announced until a later date.

I totally agree with you #287 but Bono says he met Brad at a dinner party at Pitt/Aniston’s and BP offered “anything I can do.” So, it hasn’tt just been since AJ. I think the whole shine a light stuff comes from AJ and is all to the good. If they get positive PR so what? They are maximizing their contributions IMAO. Just think of how much donations increase when AJ does her World Refugee Day appearances. Most of their critics would be fine with Dolce & Gabbana selling out those sunglasses AJ wore last week (which they probably did!), but denigrate their good works. I am glad for NOLA. I like the design of the green buildings. If you check all the other entries for the GG design competition, they all had similar concepts — boxy, modular, modern. Green. There are people who dont appreciate modern architecture, but I hope they get to realize how great a project this is. I know the architects had to consider the systems needed to equip the structures with to make it sustainable and more eco-friendly that’s why it looks like that. Plus, they have to be cost-effective. I’m excited to see how this project develops.
