Grease Reviews are Suck

This is not the one that I want!

Reviews for the Broadway revival of Grease are sucking! NBC’s reality TV series You’re the One That I Want chose Max Crumm and Laura Osnes to play the lead roles.

The Hollywood Reporter: “Tackily produced and utterly lacking the sort of fun comic spark that the original production and certainly the movie possessed (though not the most recent Broadway revival in 1994), this is a Grease that only will be appreciated by young TV viewers who don’t know any better.”

Variety: “The most dismal thing about this Grease is that aside from the two discoveries plucked from a mediocre TV talent pool and thrust into this sorry walk-through, no-one appears to be trying very hard. Like the drag-queeny wig slapped on Sandy when she finally conforms to the cool-kid ethos by unleashing the bad-girl within to win Danny, it all seems somewhat counterfeit.”

The TV show may have bombed but the strong ticket sales ($14 million box-office advance) may mean Grease could be around longer than expected. Apparently Broadway and reality TV go together like rama lama lama ka dinga de dinga dong!

1st…was just reading an article about this…doesn’t really surprise me much…it would be very hard to match the original Grease production…I heard that most critics didn’t feel that the casting was right and that mediocre talented people played the parts…someone was right when they said this was the results of reality tv…

I agree, susie. It’s always hard to top a classic like Grease. And then, to cast the cast the roles using reality TV. Not gonna happen.

By the way, am I the only one that thinks Max and Laura gain 10 years whenever they perform. They look like 35 year olds trying to look young again.

I watched a bit of the show at the beginning and then missed most of it but tuned in again toward the end. I was shocked and disappointed at the choices - but the professionals and the people voted - what can you do. Apparently the same show did well in England with an English cast. Hope this does well I would like to see some more tv shows casting for musicals - fun to watch the process.

I saw the show last saturday and will say that this show is the best I have seen in a long time. Better than Jersey Boys for sure. I would forget what the critics say. The show was great. Fun, good music, great sets and costumes. great singing. best show out there.

I’m from the UK and exactly the same thing happened here. Danny Bayne and Susan McFadden won (and so they should’ve!) but then on the press night the jouralists layed into the whole production. I saw it two nights after the press night and they must have seen a different show to me! Great singing, dancing and acting!

Our pair only had about 6/7 weeks rehearsal too, the US pair won ages ago didn’t they? Anyhoo the fans and ticket sales will show how great Grease is and always will be!

I thought the UK version was bad! Yikes!

L. O.’s father has a business (2 stores with around 20 phones each). Management had employees use all those business phones to do ‘voting’ . 200 times every Sunday. Reality TV is a joke. People who cheat like that stink.

My wife and I paid nearly $600 to see Grease on July 31 and what we saw was a perfect brother-sister act from Danny and Sandy. There was absolutely no romantic chemistry between the two and I’m not surprised because it is my understanding that Max and Laura actually do not care for each other and it showed in the performance. The other cast members did a fine job, but we talked to several people after the show that had seen multiple Broadway productions and they all told us that Grease was at the bottom. The quality of the theater here in Tucson is far better and I was expecting something out of this world. I guess anyone can be a star on Broadway these days.

Theaterlover, I don’t know where you got your information, but is not true that Laura & Max do not care for each other. They became friends at the initial auditions in LA and remained friends throughout the competition.

15 min, are you saying that none of the other contestants used their connections to get votes? Of course, they did!

When you ask your employees to come in to your business week after week to do ‘phone voting’, and don’t pay them for their time- that’s not right. Creating an atmosphere where every employee has to wear a yellow ‘Laura’ T-shirt every day for 4 months is overkill. Employees feeling that if they don’t wear their ‘laura’ shirt to “show support”, it might threaten their job. And watching the turnover actually happen… (In a medical office, where posters of her are PLASTERED all over the walls, it doesn’t feel like a very professional medical setting.) When you own a business, and you let your personal life interfere that much with patient care to the point that it all seems creepy, the patients feel uncomfortable with it. The elderly look around at all the ‘grease’ signs in the office, and not being savvy to reality TV- it just seems confusing. Owning a business means “it should be about the patient”, not the owner’s personal life.

I’m 53 years old and saw the show the other night. IT WAS FANTASTIC!!! I don’t know how people are giving such bad reviews for it. It was a great show, good acting and singing. I would recommend it to anyone.
