The level of ignorance displayed here is astounding.

Movies fail for various reasons. Writing, editing, directing so much of the behind the scenes stuff actually makes the movie what it is but so few people seem to realize that or perhaps want to admit it. If the director does not have a clear vision for the film either due to a poor script or poor planning or whatever, the performances will suffer as will the film. That’s generally why the director gets the Best Movie Oscar. It’s far too easy to blame the person in front of the camera when a film does poorly because they are most visible.

Another reason for poor domestic market performance may simply be the nature of the film. This is where I find people simply lump films that have been executed well but just didn’t hit a home run because of the subject matter. Don’t make Angie the scapegoat because let’s say in the case of the Good Shepherd where she was in a supporting role, people simply were not that interested in a fairly quiet, slow-moving, 3 hr movie about an even quieter man who helped to discover the CIA. Unless you’re a history buff who gets all excited about the beginnings of the CIA or an incredibly die-hard Angie fan, the film held no interest for you. If Robert Deniro intended for the general public to rush out to see it then he needed to seriously rethink his approach but clearly the man wasn’t trying to make boxoffice gold, he knew it was risky and the domestic market didn’t bite. Same thing happened with the Good German with Clooney - only a small audience would see that film. That’s the risk they take.
The more recent example is AMH. The film is a geo-political procedural that takes you through the immediate days of Daniel Pearl’s abduction. We know he dies. This is not a happy movie in the traditional Hollywood way. Most people aren’t ready for this kind of film - it makes you think about hate and how destructive it is, how weakminded people can be manipulated by a single, unfounded accusation, you think about torture and whether it’s ever justified, you want Danny to be saved but you know he won’t be and it frustates you - who in their right mind would want to see this type of film other than people who see that kind of debate as recreation and die-hard Angie fans? The movie doesn’t appeal to the masses but the fact is, it was never meant to.

And you know what, as much as I like a brainless comedy or action flick here and there, it is sad that so many, and I do mean so many films with great messages and plots are just being ignored while people run out to see movies like Transformers, which I saw too but I try to balance my moments of frivolity with something intellectually stimulating.

Also,
Angie doesn’t bare herself in every film and while yes, there are often sexual undertones to many of her characters, that is not always the case either. People always seem to latch onto the most provocative things and never recall the moments when Angie is more subdued. She wasn’t provocative in The Bone Collector and while Lisa in Girl, Interrupted was certainly provocative, I don’t recall her once taking her clothes off. What about Gone in 60 Seconds, did she flash us there? (btw, I am actually asking because I didn’t see the theatrical release only the cencored cable version). Anyway, I don’t think she did just from the context of the film but I may be wrong but nonetheless, Angie doesn’t need to strip down to capture attention.

Angie plays strong, often powerful females and in Hollywood, overt sexuality is part of that. Other actresses in the past with dominant personalities have also had to contend with that, it’s typecasting to a certain extent. They do it to everyone - some actresses will forever be “the good girl” and will never be seen as anything else even if they had the acting ability. Fortunately, Angie has managed to work in several genres but let’s face it, she’ll never be cast as the “best friend” in a rom-com. She’s too dominant, she has too much presence. I recall a quote from Oliver Stone about Angie and the force she brings to a performance, something about he believed she lived a past life as a Pagan queen who commanded armies across deserts. THAT was why he cast her as Alexander’s mother despite her age. A presence such as hers is going to be cast in roles associated with power, influence and as Hollywood would have it, strong sexuality.
