Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, gave the FUNNIEST response during last night’s Miss Teen USA pageant!!!!
Host Mario Lopez stood by as she was asked, “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
Miss South Carolina answered, “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

It certainly seems that she was caught off guard with this question. However, anyone with an ounce of sense could effectively bluff their way through it if they didn’t have a thoughtful answer. What she said made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I can only imagine that after the event Miss South Carolina was cringing with embarrassment, although possibly not as much as me when I watched that video.

You know, part of such a pageant is testing how they perform under pressure and their ability to think on their feet. You cannot be prepped with a calculated response for absolutely everything. Instead of ploughing straight into a nonsensical response, she needed to take a deep breath, keep her wits about her, stay on topic and say something relevant. How South Africa, Asia and Iraq got in there I will never know.
Even if she didn’t have the perfect academic response, using her own experience might have helped. If she is one of those teens unable to find the US on a map, perhaps pointing out that geography wasn’t required and atlases were rarely used in instruction could help answer that question. Or society’s obsession with celebrity/gossip and less on education and world relations - whatever, but not that rambling mess!

Where can I donate money so that all Americans can have a map? The map shortage crisis is a serious issue. While people are constantly distracted by the Darfur crisis, the Iraq war, the recovery effort in New Orleans, the environment, worldwide extreme poverty or even Cancer research millions of Americans live without a single map. I’m glad Miss South Carolina had the courage to bring this very serious issue to the forefront. I hope some celebrity organizes a concert with top recording artists to bring even more attention to the map crisis.
I have been fortunate enough to have had a map since I was very young, but when I think of those who have never laid eyes on one–I feel sick. We may have been able to save those deprived of maps if only someone had spoken out sooner. Thank you Miss South Carolina. You have done a great service to your country.

Wow……. and it only seems to be getting worse… I highly recommend everyone watch the movie Idiocracy (written and directed by Mike Judge, same guy that did Office Space and King of the Hill). The movie pretty much sums up where “U.S Americans” are headed (and the rest of the world too if non-Americans keep importing American culture). I believe it’s necessary to first ascertain where the polls were done and what specific age groups were polled. Perhaps they polled three and five year olds, I don’t know. However, I believe if a large population of american adults were given the opportunity, they could find the US on a map.”

The reason so many people have trouble locating the US on a map is that map publishers fail to all mark the country US or USA so that that we can look and see. We should should pass legislation requing that all map publishers use a different color for the US so we can locate it.

What I find fascinating are the responses here. For the people who judge Americans based on GW and this unfortunate girl, what does it say about you? Two people do not make up a significant sampling to determine if a country the size of the U.S. is stupid or smart. (2) The educational system in this country is shot to hell and frankly 1 out of 5 kids probably didn’t get a geography lesson (never less a geography class) in all the 13 years of schooling the US provided. (3) 25% of Americans don’t care, ’cause they aren’t traveling out of the US anyway — have you seen the statistics for how many US citizens have passports?
