Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, gave the FUNNIEST response during last night’s Miss Teen USA pageant!!!!
Host Mario Lopez stood by as she was asked, “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
Miss South Carolina answered, “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

She is an insult to American educational system. and I can’t believed it, there are lots of affluent Asian families who would give up everything in their home country just to let their kids have a better education in America. I think they will have a second thought after seeing this.

LAUREN WAS THE ONLY GIRL ASKED A QUESTION ABOUT ANYTHING IMPORTANT.
MISS COLORADO WAS ASKED ABOUT PARIS HILTON, LINSAY LOHAN, & NICOLE RICHIE. THE OTHER GIRLS WERE ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THINGS TEENAGERS WOULD KNOW ABOUT I THINK ONE GIRL WAS ASK HOW DO KNOW YOU ARE AN ADULT? THE GIRL REPLIED WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG WITHOUT ASKING YOUR PARENTS. HOW BOGUS IS THAT ****??? SO WHAT ANY 5 YEAR OLD WHO KNOWS RIGHT FROM WRONG WITHOUT ASKING MOMMY IS AN ADULT………. I MEAN THE OTHER GIRLS WERE ASK SIMPLE QUESTIONS NOT A QUESTION ABOUT EDUCATION OR POLITICS SO I MEAN YOU REALLY CANT SAY LAUREN IS STUPID. I FEEL SHE GOT SCREWED AND I THINK THE OTHER JUDGES DID TO BECAUSE EVEN WITH THAT HORRIBLE ANSWER SHE STILL CAME IN 3RD AND THAT ISNT BAD OUT OF 51 CONTESTANTS. LAUREN IS GOING TO GO AND BE AN AWESOME SOCCER PLAYER SO WHO CARES ABOUT A STUPID PAGEANT ANYWAY!!
I THINK MISS COLORADO DESERVED THE TITLE BUT AS FAR AS BEAUTY GOES SOUTH CARLINA DESERVED 1ST RUNNER UP!
You know, part of such a pageant is testing how they perform under pressure and their ability to think on their feet. You cannot be prepped with a calculated response for absolutely everything. Instead of ploughing straight into a nonsensical response, she needed to take a deep breath, keep her wits about her, stay on topic and say something relevant. How South Africa, Asia and Iraq got in there I will never know.
Even if she didn’t have the perfect academic response, using her own experience might have helped. If she is one of those teens unable to find the US on a map, perhaps pointing out that geography wasn’t required and atlases were rarely used in instruction could help answer that question. Or society’s obsession with celebrity/gossip and less on education and world relations - whatever, but not that rambling mess!

Where can I donate money so that all Americans can have a map? The map shortage crisis is a serious issue. While people are constantly distracted by the Darfur crisis, the Iraq war, the recovery effort in New Orleans, the environment, worldwide extreme poverty or even Cancer research millions of Americans live without a single map. I’m glad Miss South Carolina had the courage to bring this very serious issue to the forefront. I hope some celebrity organizes a concert with top recording artists to bring even more attention to the map crisis.
I have been fortunate enough to have had a map since I was very young, but when I think of those who have never laid eyes on one–I feel sick. We may have been able to save those deprived of maps if only someone had spoken out sooner. Thank you Miss South Carolina. You have done a great service to your country.

#80 If all teenagers are supposed to know about is Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie then that could explain why some people can’t locate the U.S. on a map.

Simply put, she is the product of her SPECIALIZED upbringing - useless at everything but being a trophy. THIS is exactly the type of education you get when the school board has their head in the sand, abstinence for sex education, bashing all science, poo-pooing a second language, pro-flat earth and anti-evolution. If you think about it, how could any one with some level of education not recognize the U.S. on a map? After all, the North America continent is very BIG and easily recognizable. How many other countries are there in North America in addition to the U.S.? Heaven forbid they should ask her where South Africa and Iraq are on the map!
It seems to me like she is truly not a very bright person and not well-educated either. Her parents probably paid someone to coash her, but because she’s not bright to begin with, she got all the information all mixed up. You can’t really do last minute cramming for someone with a very dim lightbulb.
