Miss South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton, gave the FUNNIEST response during last night’s Miss Teen USA pageant!!!!
Host Mario Lopez stood by as she was asked, “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?”
Miss South Carolina answered, “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.”

The reason so many people have trouble locating the US on a map is that map publishers fail to all mark the country US or USA so that that we can look and see. We should should pass legislation requing that all map publishers use a different color for the US so we can locate it.

What I find fascinating are the responses here. For the people who judge Americans based on GW and this unfortunate girl, what does it say about you? Two people do not make up a significant sampling to determine if a country the size of the U.S. is stupid or smart. Perhaps those of you that are insecure enough to find this sad display is of benefit to your weak egos are the actual imbeciles. I’ve lived throughout the world and find that there are intelligent and stupid people everywhere. BTW, I’m an American and proud of it!
Re: 130. Thank you, Carly, for such a well-written and truthful response! I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am ashamed that some of the other citizens of the world feel that overgeneralization about this topic somehow makes them appear intelligent in comparison.
We can laugh at this girl but let’s not make excuses. Anyone in this county has had it 10 fold better than most of the teenagers in the world. As I have traveled teenager in other countries is someone working full time and bearing children. No time for classes even if there were classes for the masses and not just the very wealthy. But most importantly SHAME on her and every other “Airhead” who puts make-up and crowns over silly things like world hunger and genocide.

Caitlin Upton has been blooked on wikipedia preventing anyone from creating a page under her name. I have never before seen such a thing. This is almost as disturbing as 20 % of the population be unaware of the location of the US.
Mario should’ve brought out a map & asked Miss. South Carolina if SHE could locate the U.S. on a map. I wonder if she knows where South Carolina is located….(sigh)

Firstly…WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH THIS DEMENTED WOMAN?! Secondly…that speech made absoluely no sense whatsoever. I mean, what does Iraq, South Africa and all the Asian countries have to do with the educational welfare of America? From what I’ve heard from relaives, Filipino (Asians) courses are more advanced than American ones.

Yes there are intelligent people as well as less than intelligent people everywhere. However, no offense but I think your being slightly biased and very ignorant in saying that it’s not a fair judgment to say that because of her, all American’s are dumb. Your using her age an excuse? She’s how old? 18? And your saying it’s not her fault she couldn’t answer the question because it was too high a level? You do know she’s allowed to vote right? I’m sorry, but frankly I don’t care what kinds of questions the other girls got, whether it was about hair or makeup or Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton or whatever. Thank god they actually gave someone a legitimate question to answer instead of the shallow questions you claim to be the proper level for an 18 year old. Most educated people throughout the world understand polls have biases built into them and that you can attain any result you are looking for by selecting your demographic, sampling size, etc… Didn’t you learn that in school? I know I did in the American university I attended. Good luck to you. I doubt you would enjoy being stereotyped to the degree you stereotype Americans.
