Angelina Jolie Visits Iraq
UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie traveled to Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the humanitarian needs there — the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict in Iraq.
According to UNHCR, “Yesterday in Damascus (Syria), Jolie visited a UNHCR registration center and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.”
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Angie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
While in Iraq, Jolie also took the time to privately visit US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

Angelina Jolie highlights humanitarian crisis during Syria and Iraq visits
DAMASCUS, Syria, August 28 (UNHCR) - UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has visited Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the conflict in Iraq.
The UN refugee agency estimates more than 4. 2 million Iraqis have left their homes - 2 million to neighbouring states and another 2.2 million displaced inside Iraq.
Yesterday in Damascus, Jolie visited a UNHCR registration centre and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.
As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie said she would leave politics to others while focusing on the region’s huge humanitarian needs.
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the humanitarian plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with some of the stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Jolie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
While in Iraq, she separated from UNHCR to visit privately with US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.
Jolie arrived in Syria on Monday. In Damascus, she met some of the thousands of Iraqi refugees registering with UNHCR, nearly one-quarter of whom are victims of violence and torture. Tens of thousands are without jobs, and many young people are in danger of losing out on an education and a future. She recognized Syria for its open borders and generosity to Iraqis.
In late July, UNHCR and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched a joint US$129 million education appeal aimed at getting 155,000 young Iraqi refugees throughout the Middle East back into school. The United States announced Tuesday that it will contribute US$30 million to the appeal

Yes like the american troops who are dying on daily basis to protect a country they don’t know.
Bottom line is that she did a good thing, she did her job and she should be applauded for that not dragged through the mud. I look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing more about her trip. Brad surely must be very proud of her.
JJ please put the update that she took time to meet with the AMERICAN TROOPS.

Deadly Earthquake Shakes Peru, Prompts Red Cross Response
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies sends assistance to Peruvian earthquake survivors.
By Katie Lawson , Staff Writer, Redcross.org
Thursday, August 16, 2007 — A 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the central coastal region of Peru early Wednesday evening, destroying buildings and leaving many people without power, water or communications. Immediately following the quake, the Peruvian Red Cross sent a relief team to the region to assess the damage and evaluate the needs of those affected.
The powerful quake struck around 6:40 p.m. local time and was centered 90 miles south of Lima, the country’s capital. Initial reports indicate that several hundred people were killed and more than 1,300 have been injured. The province of Ica was hardest-hit by the largest temblor to strike Peru in 30 years. Widespread damage was also reported in the area of Chincha.
Tsunami warnings were issued up and down the coast of Central and South America, but were later cancelled. Several aftershocks have continued to plague the region with more expected in the days ahead.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International Federation), American Red Cross and other Red Cross national societies maintain a warehouse of relief supplies at the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) in Panama. Two planes loaded with tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and jerrycans (for carrying water) are scheduled to land in the town of Pisco on Friday morning. The supplies will assist more than 2,000 families in the affected area.
On high alert following the quake, PADRU deployed three disaster management delegates to assist with emergency operations. Rescue workers have been struggling to reach the hardest-hit areas due to giant cracks and fallen power lines on the Pan American Highway, a major inter-coastal thoroughfare. Rockslides were reportedly blocking other roads in the area.
The International Federation has released $205,000 from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to support the Peruvian Red Cross relief operation.
While the American Red Cross does not accept individually donated goods, the Red Cross is accepting financial donations for this disaster. To donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or for Spanish, 800-257-7575.
The American Red Cross, its partners in PADRU and the Peruvian Red Cross continue to monitor and assess the situation. Assistance by the American Red Cross may include mobilizing relief workers, supplies and financial resources.
While in Iraq, she separated from UNHCR to visit privately with US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

No
Only readings for a couple of days. Filming according to someone at IMDB it is suppose to start 8/29 but that does not mean it includes Brad. Frankly I think Brad and George will start filming after they come back from the Venice.

Common sense should tell people Angie was long gone before the information was release.
I am so proud of Angie and to be a fan of hers. Rock on Angie!
Slayer, The: I don’t understand why people believe she hates the US either, but some of it definitely formed right after 9/11 when she said that we should also remember the Afghan refugees who were innocent (I’m not directly quoting, just summing up what I can remember). A lot of people thought it was ill-timed and inappropriate. So, from that, a lot of people immediately labeled her the next Jane Fonda. But she hasn’t done anything to deserve that type of criticism. I think she’s made comments about being proud to be born American before. I think in her book maybe.

Ok while I admire her need to play mother theresa, I’m sorry but she’s not doing anything that other folks out there arn’t. Draw attention to what, everyone knows what the hell is going on, American’s are killing Arabs over oil. We don’t need Angie to tell us something we all know since we watch the news and pay taxes, which helps kill more innocent people.
I’m just tired of these celebs acting like they’re going to save the world by adopting Afrikan babies and traveling in their private jets to 3rd world countries all in the name of bringing attention to causes when really all they’re really doing is bringing attention to themselves.
And don’t misunderstand I am not hating but maybe the problem with this country is that we get our info about serious world issues through celebrities instead of policy makers. That dumb beauty contestant last week and her ramblings showed how little we all know about ourselves and our world. I would much rather get my info from journalists and educators rather than Angelina or anyone else trying to “bring attention to serious issues.” Angie should go take care of her children and eat a sandwhich and worry about her own family instead of parading them around the world.

You know UNHCR workers and non-famous people are in and out of Iraq all the time. Let’s not forget the media (reporters, cameramen, etc..). So if Angie went I am sure she took precautions. So stop freaking out and listening to the idiots. She is still a UNHCR ambassador doing her job. Rock on Angie. Your true fans love ya.
Slayer, The: Jane Fonda is still held as the #1 hated celeb from her comments and acts during the Vietnam War against our troops (vets still run around with the anti-Jane bumper stickers). I wasn’t saying she did anything like Jane Fonda, but that was the closest analogy I could think of where someone else got ridiculed for actions during a bad situation (like 9/11). Personally, I wasn’t offended by anything Angie did b/c she was right about the innocent refugees in Afghanistan…
Go back to watch FOX news
Angelina is truly exceptional and I’m proud to be one of her fans.

“Ok while I admire her need to play mother theresa”
Maybe when you help out you have a need to play “mother theresa.”
This is serious business for Angie. She has been doing it for 6 years. When are you people going to wake up and smell the coffee. She is the real deal. So stop with your hating and criticisms. Have you been to Iraq? Are you helping out?
Ok, go back and read my entire statements from the beginning of this blog entry. You came into the middle of a question someone asked me about something earlier. Read everything before you assume something. Thanks!
Slayer my point exactly, again you are talking about bloggers. Why don’t you go ask policy makers, real journalist and politicians what they think of Ms. Jolie. Maybe then you will understand my point instead of coming back at my talking about stupid perez.
GOD BLESS YOU ANGIE,because i have cousins fighting in the army also friends of my grandkids that graduated same time they did serving, may GOD watch over OUR TROOPS and all the poor people caught in the middle, thank -you angie for taking time out to go visit them and to put your life on the line, love you angie.
she will probably come back with another kid from there so is so damn stupid

I normally don’t say a whole lot about this family, but I really hope Angie is safe on her trip to visit refugees in Syria/Iraq. She has 4 precious children at home to put first and I hope she takes all measures to ensure her safety.
But I do highly applaud her because through this war, a lot of people have forgotten about the innocent people who have been uprooted and lost virtually everything they own. She always seems to be on top of bringing attention to the current refugee situations across the globe. I am really proud of her for not only speaking about her aid work, but actually doing something by placing herself in dangerous situations to bring awareness.
So, God Bless Angelina and I will pray for her mission and safe return to her family.
They want her to stay at home all day and look how hot is he, ohh and get pregnant every 18 months.

I think Angelina will accomplish her goal of drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in Iraq…..her trip is being covered by a lot of legitimate news outlet and the tabloids too. Go Angelina, I’m so proud to be her fan.

Thanks for posting my earlier comment…people on here love to create drama over nothing!

ANGELINA FOR PRESIDENT.
Her job is to go to the places the UN thinks needs highlighted about refugees.
I luv that no one knows exactly what is going on in the Jolie Pitt family. The paps, tabs nor gossips did not even know she was out of NY let alone out of the United States.
Next time someone writes as an “Insider” remember this.
WOW she is very full of herself saying that HER presence will bring attn to (another sign she is using this brad thing to her advantage) the war that has been going on for years. She just now cares? The chic doesnt’t vote for our country. What she really meant to say is that “I have already sold the rights to my kids privacy, so I need all the PR help I can get with that silly Beawoulf movie coming up”
I bet the troops thought “That walking zombie is Angelina Jolie, was is goin on back in the states? When we left for war she one of hottest women around, now not so much”
SCARLET JOHANSON WILL GO TO IRAQ TOO.
Didn’t take long for the haters to make it over here…why can’t people just applaud her for her visit instead of ridiculing every little detail? Her visit will bring awareness just like other UN ambassadors…so ridiculous to debate this…
I see the haters have OFFICIALLY arrived.
What a truly amazing woman. I am in awe of her. I wouldnt go to Iraq today and I served in the armed forces. Does this make her better than me? No, but it does make her much braver. She is a woman on a mission and I admire that. The UNHCR is extremely blessed to have someone of her caliber that is willing to go at a moments notice.
YOU CAN NOT HOLD HER BACK!!She is going to do what she wants to do regardless of what others say, good or bad. I have been following her since 2005 and that is how it is. You can sit back and complain all you want. She knows her purpose in life and is determined to fullfil it
Thanks Jared for the new thread!
Everday I admire her more and more and I know I am not alone. Even people who were neutral or critical of her are seeing that she is genuine in her concern and is very much dedicated to her UNHCR work as well as her and Brad’s other humanitarian efforts.
When I read about the first Millenium village she started in Cambodia with the help of Jeffrey S. Of course now it is funded by the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, I was amazed how much they accomplished in such a short time.
Bless you Angelina, the world needs more people like you!!!!

ANGELINA FOR PRESIDENT.
This must be second place winner for a beauty contest, certainly not playing with a full deck of cards are ya?
Now that the haters are not calling Angie stupid for making the trip, they now attack by calling her kindness and compassion as acting “mother teresa” or “santa Angie” in degrating terms and all for PR purposes. Same lame repeat over and over. I was at JJB site and someone there posted this short but beautiful poem which is very fitting for Brad and Angie before each come into the other person life:
The world once was black
And now it is bright
I used to walk head bent
And now I stand up tall
I used to have dreams
But now I have hope

Needless to say, Miss Jolie is not Miss South Carolina. And Miss Jolie can not only find th’Iraq on a map, she has actually made the trip to visit. Very cool. Because as much as it could be construed as publicity and image making, at the end of the day, she’s not flashing her cootie while getting out of a car, or waving from her beach house in Malibu. And if hanging out in a war torn country in the most unglamourous conditions ever guarantees a few headlines … so be it. I personally could never. I am a lesser person. I can’t even camp.
My friend Lara is somewhere in Africa right now on assignment with the kids from Degrassi. They are building a house there for those who cannot manage and shooting the process for an MTV documentary. She’s been living in a tent or some kind of hut for the last week, probably showering with only a litre of water a day, having the experience of a lifetime. If it were me, even if attended by a dozen assistants fanning me at night, hand feeding me grapes, still I couldn’t survive. And coming home to a life with Brad Pitt shuttling from private jet to million dollar residence is still not incentive enough.

RD:You like to do risky things and riding motorcycles. Do you think more about safety now that you have four kids?
Jolie:I don’t d drugs. I don’t intentionally ride a motorcycle without a helmet. I will always be careful. But I live a bold life, and I’m a happy mother because of that. I think the bigger question is, Am I living the life that I want my kids to see? If something happened to me doing something I believed in, then I suppose that’s the legacy i would leave as a mother.
simply the best!! i lover her for this.. excelent actress, mother and good good person..i read her book NOTES FROM MY TRAVELS and i tell you: it´s so touching..realy!!

Angelina in Th’Iraq
Were you one of the 3 million + who watched the video of that learning impaired pageant queen bungle up her answer during the Miss Teen USA pageant the other day? If you haven’t the pleasure, click here.
For some reason, she repeatedly refers to Iraq as “th’Iraq”… kills me every time. As does the strategic use of the phrase “such as”. Snort.
Needless to say, Miss Jolie is not Miss South Carolina. And Miss Jolie can not only find th’Iraq on a map, she has actually made the trip to visit. As part of her work with the UNHCR, Angelina flew first to Syria yesterday talking with Iraqi refugees. Then she “crossed into Iraq to meet with 1,200 refugees camped out in a makeshift outpost at the border, because they are unable to leave the country. She also witnessed dozens of Iraqis crossing into Syria.”
Said Angelina:
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners. My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq. It is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate abut Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
I am Jennifer Aniston.

LMAO! Lainey can be really funny when she wants
To Curious #73…. Um I’m sorry what do I know about refugee’s or the troops, are you kidding me asking that. Have you heard of alternative newspapers umm have you heard of NPR. Why the hell would I need some malnurished, private jet setting celebrity to be the the voice of dissent in this situation. Sorry ma, you don’t know what YOU’RE talking about, by the way since Angie is a spokeperson for the UN do you actually think that they are dumb enough to allow this woman to just say anything she feels on WORLD issues. So if she’s not an authority on politics why the hell are ya’ll praising her need to talk about foreign political issues.
And yes I do know a lot more than you think because unlike most of you I have relatives who live in Iraq and guess what a lot of them have fled to Iran and some have even died, so please get with it, this issue is bigger than Angie’s need to feed into her narcissism.

What a sorry excuse for a human being you really are.

Anonymous is not only a sorry excuse, ‘it’ is a no excuse, Anonymous is not a human being, go and get lost.

Are you helping
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
But that is just it I don’t think some see a need to even help. This poster saying things like Angie should go home and take care of her own children. What is that? So, she shouldn’t want to help or get involved in the world around her? Just live in her own bubble and do nothing? I really wonder what kind of life some of these people live. It isn’t enough to just clean your yard, in order to have a safe community you have to help your neighbor clean his yard too, it is jsut that simple.

Right on the spot!
Angelina is nothing like Jane Fonda. I can understand why many veterans including my father and father-in-law can`t stand Jane Fonda. They have no issues with Angelina Jolie. Neither do I as a veteran, a Republican, and fox news watcher. I respect and admire her for her humanitarian work. I also love how she conducts herself. She tries very hard to not politicize things which I admire. . Personally, I don’t thing genocide, world hunger, and other global issues such as these should be politicized. Unfortunately it has been on so many sides.
Thanx for the info!
I admire Angie’s work for the refugees a lot.
The United Nations Refugee Agency announced today that Angelina Jolie is currently in Iraq to perform a Marilyn-Monroe-like routine for the troops. Noo…I wish. Angie, a Goodwill ambassador, is there to speak to Iraqi refugees in their homes and see the devastation for herself.
She said, “I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners. My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
“It is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate abut Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
Yeah, what she said. I can’t even make fun. At least she’s doing something other than going to Hyde, driving drunk, kicking dogs or showing her coochie cat. She should’ve brought Brit, Paris, Nicole and Lindsay with her and left their asses there.
Haters,you need to copy her

I think that is the problem for some people. They want to be able to put her in a nice little box. Mother, partner, actress, activist, humanitarian etc, they don’t get she is many things and lives a very full life that doesn’t include being put in a box.

hahahahahahhahahahhaa
For those who think that this is not for real, why don’t you put your life in danger to help a cause that should concern all Americans. The plight of the refugees reflect on America and how well we take care of the people that have been affected by the war. Please stop you hating and think about the good that this will do. Do you really think that she would risk her life for publicity for herself. All she needs to do to get publicity is to walk out her front door. Love Angie and hope Brad is getting some sleep and not worrying too much.
