Deadly Earthquake Shakes Peru, Prompts Red Cross Response

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies sends assistance to Peruvian earthquake survivors.

Thursday, August 16, 2007 — A 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the central coastal region of Peru early Wednesday evening, destroying buildings and leaving many people without power, water or communications. Immediately following the quake, the Peruvian Red Cross sent a relief team to the region to assess the damage and evaluate the needs of those affected.

The powerful quake struck around 6:40 p.m. local time and was centered 90 miles south of Lima, the country’s capital. Initial reports indicate that several hundred people were killed and more than 1,300 have been injured. The province of Ica was hardest-hit by the largest temblor to strike Peru in 30 years. Widespread damage was also reported in the area of Chincha.

Tsunami warnings were issued up and down the coast of Central and South America, but were later cancelled. Several aftershocks have continued to plague the region with more expected in the days ahead.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International Federation), American Red Cross and other Red Cross national societies maintain a warehouse of relief supplies at the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) in Panama. Two planes loaded with tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and jerrycans (for carrying water) are scheduled to land in the town of Pisco on Friday morning. The supplies will assist more than 2,000 families in the affected area.

On high alert following the quake, PADRU deployed three disaster management delegates to assist with emergency operations. Rescue workers have been struggling to reach the hardest-hit areas due to giant cracks and fallen power lines on the Pan American Highway, a major inter-coastal thoroughfare. Rockslides were reportedly blocking other roads in the area.

The International Federation has released $205,000 from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund to support the Peruvian Red Cross relief operation.

While the American Red Cross does not accept individually donated goods, the Red Cross is accepting financial donations for this disaster. To donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or for Spanish, 800-257-7575.

The American Red Cross, its partners in PADRU and the Peruvian Red Cross continue to monitor and assess the situation. Assistance by the American Red Cross may include mobilizing relief workers, supplies and financial resources.

While the American Red Cross does not accept individually donated goods, the Red Cross is accepting financial donations for this disaster. To donate, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or for Spanish, 800-257-7575.

Ok while I admire her need to play mother theresa, I’m sorry but she’s not doing anything that other folks out there arn’t. Draw attention to what, everyone knows what the hell is going on, American’s are killing Arabs over oil. We don’t need Angie to tell us something we all know since we watch the news and pay taxes, which helps kill more innocent people.

I’m just tired of these celebs acting like they’re going to save the world by adopting Afrikan babies and traveling in their private jets to 3rd world countries all in the name of bringing attention to causes when really all they’re really doing is bringing attention to themselves.

And don’t misunderstand I am not hating but maybe the problem with this country is that we get our info about serious world issues through celebrities instead of policy makers. I would much rather get my info from journalists and educators rather than Angelina or anyone else trying to “bring attention to serious issues.” Angie should go take care of her children and eat a sandwhich and worry about her own family instead of parading them around the world.

Angelina Jolie highlights humanitarian crisis during Syria and Iraq visits

DAMASCUS, Syria, August 28 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has visited Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the conflict in Iraq.

The UN refugee agency estimates more than 4. 2 million Iraqis have left their homes – 2 million to neighbouring states and another 2.2 million displaced inside Iraq.

Yesterday in Damascus, Jolie visited a UNHCR registration centre and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.

As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie said she would leave politics to others while focusing on the region’s huge humanitarian needs.

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the humanitarian plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”

After talking with some of the stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Jolie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”

While in Iraq, she separated from UNHCR to visit privately with US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

Jolie arrived in Syria on Monday. In Damascus, she met some of the thousands of Iraqi refugees registering with UNHCR, nearly one-quarter of whom are victims of violence and torture. Tens of thousands are without jobs, and many young people are in danger of losing out on an education and a future. She recognized Syria for its open borders and generosity to Iraqis.

In late July, UNHCR and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched a joint US$129 million education appeal aimed at getting 155,000 young Iraqi refugees throughout the Middle East back into school. The United States announced Tuesday that it will contribute US$30 million to the appeal.

I normally don’t say a whole lot about this family, but I really hope Angie is safe on her trip to visit refugees in Syria/Iraq. She has 4 precious children at home to put first and I hope she takes all measures to ensure her safety.

But I do highly applaud her because through this war, a lot of people have forgotten about the innocent people who have been uprooted and lost virtually everything they own. She always seems to be on top of bringing attention to the current refugee situations across the globe. I am really proud of her for not only speaking about her aid work, but actually doing something by placing herself in dangerous situations to bring awareness.
So, God Bless Angelina and I will pray for her mission and safe return to her family.

Everday I admire her more and more and I know I am not alone. Even people who were neutral or critical of her are seeing that she is genuine in her concern and is very much dedicated to her UNHCR work as well as her and Brad’s other humanitarian efforts.

When I read about the first Millenium village she started in Cambodia with the help of Jeffrey S. Of course now it is funded by the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, I was amazed how much they accomplished in such a short time.

Needless to say, Miss Jolie is not Miss South Carolina. And Miss Jolie can not only find th’Iraq on a map, she has actually made the trip to visit. Very cool. Because as much as it could be construed as publicity and image making, at the end of the day, she’s not flashing her cootie while getting out of a car, or waving from her beach house in Malibu. And if hanging out in a war torn country in the most unglamourous conditions ever guarantees a few headlines … so be it. I personally could never. I am a lesser person. I can’t even camp.

My friend Lara is somewhere in Africa right now on assignment with the kids from Degrassi. They are building a house there for those who cannot manage and shooting the process for an MTV documentary. She’s been living in a tent or some kind of hut for the last week, probably showering with only a litre of water a day, having the experience of a lifetime. If it were me, even if attended by a dozen assistants fanning me at night, hand feeding me grapes, still I couldn’t survive. And coming home to a life with Brad Pitt shuttling from private jet to million dollar residence is still not incentive enough.

Why the hell would I need some malnurished, private jet setting celebrity to be the the voice of dissent in this situation. But that is just it I don’t think some see a need to even help. This poster saying things like Angie should go home and take care of her own children. What is that? So, she shouldn’t want to help or get involved in the world around her? Just live in her own bubble and do nothing? I really wonder what kind of life some of these people live. I think that is the problem for some people. They want to be able to put her in a nice little box. Mother, partner, actress, activist, humanitarian etc, they don’t get she is many things and lives a very full life that doesn’t include being put in a box.

For those who think that this is not for real, why don’t you put your life in danger to help a cause that should concern all Americans. The plight of the refugees reflect on America and how well we take care of the people that have been affected by the war. Please stop you hating and think about the good that this will do. Do you really think that she would risk her life for publicity for herself. All she needs to do to get publicity is to walk out her front door. Love Angie and hope Brad is getting some sleep and not worrying too much.

She is there as an official representative of an organization that does NOT just take any celebrity who raises their hand - she had to earn her right through her complete understanding and/or ability to learn about world issues; her suitability to converse intelligently with world leaders while also bringing empathy to those in need; her willingness to travel all over the world as needed (often, to dangerous places); and most importantly, her ability to COMMUNICATE the real problems through her celebrity status and influence.

Some celebrities would make it all about themselves, rather than keeping the focus on the issue at hand. Angie does not, and never has.

The REALITY of the situation is that there NEVER can be ENOUGH attention brought to issues like these. And the fact is - a celebrity will often bring interest when Joe Q. Journalist can’t. you said you have relative in Iraq but I will say that I live in Iran and for your information I`m in the city near Iraq so I see millions of Iraqy people who came to my lands yes it is very bad situation in that country,but don`tyouthink If someone wants to do sth we shouldn`t puther works down.

yes she travel with jet and she is multi millionar and she has many things that other people just wish about it,but It is good things we saw that with all the things she has she care about other people too.she can sit in her home and enjoy her life without any concern but she prefer to go and see the fact.

you know I talked with many Iraqy refugees in my country.they want some people who listen to them and try to help them.and when i talked to them it seems it was nice for them that i care about them although i can`t do anything for them.

so yes maybe she can`t tell all the truth b/c they won`t let them but she can`ttell lie to herself to her family andto her friends so that her trip can change many people`s thought around her and it is good things it is something that makes her comment about Iraqy in other way and that can help Iraqy.

Very cool. Because as much as it could be construed as publicity and image making, at the end of the day, she’s not flashing her cootie while getting out of a car, or waving from her beach house in Malibu. And if hanging out in a war torn country in the most unglamourous conditions ever guarantees a few headlines … so be it. I personally could never. I am a lesser person. I can’t even camp.

My friend Lara is somewhere in Africa right now on assignment with the kids from Degrassi. They are building a house there for those who cannot manage and shooting the process for an MTV documentary. She’s been living in a tent or some kind of hut for the last week, probably showering with only a litre of water a day, having the experience of a lifetime. If it were me, even if attended by a dozen assistants fanning me at night, hand feeding me grapes, still I couldn’t survive. Santa Angelina flew from New York to Syria on Monday. In Damascus, she visited a UNHCR registration center and spend hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes.

On Tuesday, the mother of four crossed over to Iraq to meet with 1,200 refugees camped out in a makeshift outpost at the border, because they are unable to leave the country.

SPIEGEL: Ms Jolie, in your new film “A Mighty Heart” you play the wife of the American journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped by Islamic fundamentalists in Pakistan in 2002 and later beheaded. Your most intimate screen partner during the film is a mobile phone. How do you deal with that as an actor?

Angelina Jolie: There was actually something strange about the phone, because Marianne Pearl was never without her phone. It was a constant, every day on the set. My phone was so attached to me, I couldn’t let go of it. One day on the set, the phone rang accidentally. Someone had called a wrong number but because it was this movie everybody got all sweaty.

SPIEGEL: Is the mobile phone a suitable tool to convey emotions? In the film you send a tender text message to the missing Daniel Pearl every night.

Jolie: I think it’s a sign of our times, something that people can relate to.

SPIEGEL: And do you send many text messages yourself?

Jolie: No, I don’t really send messages. I rarely carry my phone. I occasionally check messages at the end of the night, but I don’t carry it around.

SPIEGEL: You once said in an interview: “I never cry.” In the film, Mariane Pearl cries only twice — when she hears that her husband was murdered, and when she’s giving birth to her child. Do you think crying should be reserved strictly for matters of life and death?

Jolie: I didn’t cry when I was giving birth. I was screaming! And I cry in other parts of the film. I’m very careful with my emotions, and I don’t let them run free. If I’m upset, it’s usually for a very good, very deep reason.

SPIEGEL: There’s a wonderful scene in the movie where you go outside in the yard and are totally frightened about what’s happened. And, then, as you see a child behind you, you stop crying and try to smile so that you don’t frighten the child. It was very authentic.

Jolie: To be honest, that wasn’t a planned moment. That just happened. The little girl lived in the house, and she would go wherever she wanted to go when we were filming. And sometimes she would come in and be in the kitchen. I didn’t know when she was outside. I just felt like leaving the room, when I got upset. So I walked outside and, then, when I turned around and realized she was there, I felt really bad that I’d scared her. So, that was just a natural reaction and probably something that I would do with my own kids.

SPIEGEL: You’ve travelled to countries like Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Pakistan as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. Were you often faced with situations in which you had to control and hide your emotions?

Jolie: Yes, mainly because you don’t want somebody to know that you feel sorry for them, because they will feel worse, or because you don’t want someone to know or see your fear. If someone like a sick kid or a burn victim sees your fear, they respond to how you respond. And if you show them it’s terrible, they will get upset. It’s something I’ve learned over the years.

SPIEGEL: When do you let out your pent-up emotions?

Jolie: I cry secretly. I don’t really cry in front of anybody. As Brad will tell you, I hate crying. I have this practical self. I feel like it’s not accomplishing anything. But when I lost my mother, I cried, and I cried big.

SPIEGEL: So, has being a mother made you more domesticated

Jolie: No. People seem to think that. But, you know, I’m playing an assassin in a movie now! I’m quite tough. It takes more courage to actually learn about an issue or maybe go to Washington and try to push for a change in a law, because it makes you nervous and it matters so much. It doesn’t take courage to drink too much and be wild or jump around. That doesn’t take any kind of boldness, just riding a motorcycle or whatever the idea of being tough is. Tough is having four kids. Tough is committing to life and being disciplined.

SPIEGEL: Should all actors follow your example and get involved in politics?

Jolie: I don’t necessarily think that’s a natural role for an actor. Sometimes acting and politics make a very bad combination. I think that sometimes people take me less seriously in my work for the UN because I am an actor.

SPIEGEL: In many Western countries people don’t trust politicians any more. Are stars now taking over the role of moral leaders?

Jolie: I really hope not! I think we should be looking for great leaders in people who have dedicated their lives to those issues. And the reality is that actors spend a great deal of their time making films. And that doesn’t mean that they’re not educated. But we haven’t gone to law school and we’re not experts on policy. We’re just people with a platform and an opinion. But that should never be enough, in my opinion, to be political.

SPIEGEL: Can you picture yourself going into politics?

Jolie: I’m able to be very effective now because I’m not a Democrat, I’m not a Republican. So, I’m not tied, and I’d never want to be tied to anything, to some constituency that I would have to answer to.

So easy to talk about Iraq qhile we’re siting in our houses or offices, so easy to talk, trash and fight about Iraq while we have, clean water, great food, a good computer and LOTS of free times.

All while real people are dying, getting raped, losing their homes, getting wounded, etc.

I lived in war zones, part of my family is dead because of war.

I’m not the biggest fan of Jolie but she’s there so I’won’t say a thing. I really don’t car about her intentions, either way no one had clean intentions, not goverments, not politicians, not the UN, not the companies..

That’s how our world works.

Yes, Iraq is a war zone and very dangerous but not to UNHCR visitors like Ms. Jolie.
These people have an escort, are protected by troops with guns. They hop in and out of places, say a few words and off they are again. So what’s so brave about Ms Jolies doing?
Besides we don’t need Ms Jolie telling us what’s going on there. We know it. We can read the press and watch the media. besides there are several organizations there to help. Nobody ever talks about these really brave people who spend weeks and months there, giving real support to these people.
Not just people like Ms Jolie who swaps her Lagerfeld handbag for baggy pants for a few seconds and convince herself that she is doing something good - and only convincing herself because people who really know what’s going on don’t give a damn what little a somewhat notorious actress has to say.

What a remarkable humanitarian . How can you not love such a courageous woman ? Just when I thought she’s having a good rest from the Hamptons dinner. Makes me dizzy just thinking about her activities and I’m a stay home Mom.

Angelina is such an amazing person, she cares about human suffering and tragedies and whats unfolding in Iraq is the biggest human tragedy caused by Bush and his cronies.

Since she is the Goodwill Abbassador for the UNHCR it only makes sense that the UN would send her into regions where there is a refugee crisis - the number of Iraqi refugees is staggering and putting pressure on neighboring countries like Syria. It’s no surprise that she made this trip considering this is her role.

As to her safety, well, the UN has that responsibility. They sent her in, so they should know what the security concerns in the region are like. It doesn’t sound as though she’s in or near Baghdad or any of the hotspots so hopefully things aren’t as volatile there. Anyway, I wish her well on her ongoing mission as Goodwill Ambassador and a safe return.

I am going to assume you are a humanitarian worker yourself and not critices you for that lame comment. You are also appreciated. Her message and trip is not for you but those who are in power to send you some more help, if you are a UN worker. In this life every little bit help.

Most Americans in their 20’s do not vote. She is in the norm. To penalize solely her for that is absurd. That remark was made a long time ago. I would not be surprised if she does vote now. you can do absentee ballots. you don’t have to go to a polling place. She has also been astute enough to know whoever she does support she will keep to herself. George Clooney learned that the hard way when he supported his father and there was a Hollywood backlash even though his father never lived in “Hollywood”.

I am sure she is already back. That is how you do it for any ones safety. She has always supported the troops and never said anything remotely anti-troops. No non-famous people can’t meet politicians but we can write. A writing campaign is very effective. Let the administration know that we ahve to do more for the refugessa nd particularly the Irags that helped americans.
