OlderAngelina Jolie Visits Iraq
UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie traveled to Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the humanitarian needs there — the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict in Iraq.
According to UNHCR, “Yesterday in Damascus (Syria), Jolie visited a UNHCR registration center and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.”
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Angie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
While in Iraq, Jolie also took the time to privately visit US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

Since she is the Goodwill Abbassador for the UNHCR it only makes sense that the UN would send her into regions where there is a refugee crisis - the number of Iraqi refugees is staggering and putting pressure on neighboring countries like Syria. It’s no surprise that she made this trip considering this is her role.
As to her safety, well, the UN has that responsibility. They sent her in, so they should know what the security concerns in the region are like. It doesn’t sound as though she’s in or near Baghdad or any of the hotspots so hopefully things aren’t as volatile there. Anyway, I wish her well on her ongoing mission as Goodwill Ambassador and a safe return.

The only down side is that the two friends don’t get nearly as much time to hang out as they used to. “I haven’t seen him in a little while, but we stay in touch. I know he’s doing well.”

At least we humanitarian workers do not regard these doings as “help”, it’s just selfish people trying to abuse the humanitarian cause for their own purpose.

If any one in the US bothered to listen on 60 minutes a former soldier in Iraq and a former state Department official spoke about this humanitarian crisis because a lot of those people are running because they were targeted due to HELPING AMERICANS. We owe these people. Bush administration is not doing enough for people that helped us. They have sent financialaid to Syria to help feed them but that is not going to protect those people w/ the insurgents after them for helping Americans. That is why they are targeted. Angelina is in no way anti-American by bringing these people’s plight to light. That is why the UN has celebrities as ambassadors. Audrey Hepburn was laued for her efforts. When I was a kid I had no idea who audrey Hepburn the actress was but I knew about the Halloween drive to give to refugess every year and her work w/ the UN.

Who Angelina or Brad votes for is none of our business. Angelina is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. She is doing the work that she has been for almost 6 years. A Goodwill Ambassadors job is to bring awareness in their area of concern, in Angelina’s case it’s refugees displaced by war.
I think she already visited Iraq before, this may not be her first trip. Also she went to see the US and coalition troops on her own apart from the UNHCR which was a very good thing. She did not HAVE to to this.
