Angelina Jolie Visits Iraq

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie traveled to Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the humanitarian needs there — the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict in Iraq.

According to UNHCR, “Yesterday in Damascus (Syria), Jolie visited a UNHCR registration center and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.”

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”

After talking with stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Angie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”

While in Iraq, Jolie also took the time to privately visit US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

I am baffled by the ignorance and brainy laziness of some haters : Noone is totaly innocent, not even humanitarians ! They have to comply to the politics which are the ultimate driving force and the wallet that make it possible for the humatirainas to work withing certain constraints, political, finacial, humanitarians, ect.

As for the remark about the humanitarian despising AJ work, that’s pure bullshit ! I am from congolese, portuguese and angolan decent. I have still family in those countries and have seen myself little girls of 3 raped…some dying from their multiple wounds within their little undeveloped womb. I have made some work but given up …couldn’t stand the unbearable and the toll of baby death…Have you ever seen the eyes of a 3 year being raped…they are empty and dead !

The fact is real humatarians, those who work everyday hands in hands with the suffering and flirt with death like ‘La Croix Rouge’, ‘Doctors without Borders’…those doctors who for some hold a gun when in certain areas, those nurses who fear going on remote volatile areas scaring that they could get caught and trapped by rebels and raped and killed but go there nonetheless because noone other will dare to go, not even the regular army… and the western world lacking the political will to pour money to built a decent UN force to manage safe refuge camp guarded by a reliable paid army, those people know how politic drive the whole thing and that money is the mean to make things happen, including a humanitarian project.

That’s where high profile figures play the role and that’s why it is usually a princess or an actress, a singer who have the public platform have given the job.

Every humanitarian will always tell you that they lack finacial means to implement their project effectively because they don’t have the financial resources they ask for. They don’t have the relations or/and the high profile image to drive enough intrest, to have the necessary impact on politics or public opinion which can influence some decisions.

Remembered the land mines campaign ? It has always existed but it needed a high profile figure like Princess Diana to make it URGENT to deal with for the politics. She put weight on it more than the thousands of anonyme workers could do cause they don’t have the necessaru realy to politics than a celebrity or high profile could have.

Those humanitarians know that they need that incentive, like they need the politics to release the financials and give the necessary protective environment with a paid army so that the humanitarians can do their work.

That’s an organized way to make it more effective. Only a fraud would say that Jolie contribution or other high profile putting their weigth on humanitarian problems are counterproductive.

That’s how money and political means are put together the most effective way to ensure results aimed at implementing effectively a humanitarian project.

Angelina’s never hid her bi-sexuality. What makes you think that Jenny Shimizu is lying about anything?
Angelina may be trying to quell her natural tendencies at this point, but one can’t hide those urges forever. Then it’ll be, “HELLO, JENNY!!!!!!”

Jenny whoever is just the worst kind of ex there is like so many others who will be left unnamed. She don’t know how to move on or when to move on. She don’t know how to bow out in grace like the lady she never was she laps up her last morsels of fame by bashing Angie’s now choices and lifestyle. How many here have had an out of the ordinary, untraditional or even controversal relationship whether it was heterosexual or not.
Bi doesn’t mean lesbian or gay. It means experimental and for the moment. Only time will tell and if Jenny whatever was all that she says she was then Angie would have never left her to begin with as she said many times before it’s what you share outside of sex…

#271: well? Angie’s there. HOw come she can visit and that person with the relatives can’t? If you really cared about your family, you will find a way. It’s nice to talk when you’re not doing anything. Better not criticize those who do cause it will only reflect badly on you.

I’ve been just lurking, but can’t resist to expose my opinion now. I intend to share my thoughts only with the fans. I hope the haters will have towards me the same attitude I have towards them: ignore.
I’m an admirer of Jolie as an artist and as an activist. I respect her attitudes and I think she is genuine and very intelligent. I don’t see her visit to the coalition troops as an endorsement to Bush administration or even to the war. She is visiting a country torn by war, there are troops from her country, she went to see them. I think anyone would do the same if one has compatriots involved. Those soldiers are also victims, used by politician for economic and power purposes. I’m sure many of them wish this all could end and they could go home to their families and friends.
Being against the war doesn’t mean being agaisnt the USA, and the US are much more, I hope, than Bush administration. This maniqueism is so stupid. Jane fonda wasn’t anti-american: she was anti-Vietnam war. And if I had a father, a husband, boyfriend, son, friend, any beloved one, sent to die and kill for the lame reasons they sent those boys and men in Vietnam, saying they were fighting for liberty and democracy (when US government supported dictatorship and torture all oven Central and South America - Nicarágua, Honduras, Chile, Brasil, etc), or if I had been sent there I would be shoulder to shoulder with Fonda and the other protesting.
But I think Angelina Jolie doesn’t want her personal thoughts about this issue (whose I’m not aware of, neither are you) to put a cloud over what is the main problem for her wherever she goes: the refugees problem. This issue should be above the politics because these people will need to go back, or reconstruct their home somewhere else. They loose their right to live in their own country, often no matter which were their political convictions, and frequently even without having any. Good night!

Please Angelna is just doing her thang like she always had done. Nothing new. Some of you need to stop elevating Angelina to something more than she is. She’s just a real person doing charitable work like many people we know. There have been many celebrities who have gone to Iraq so all of you 12 year olds need to stop with this. She’s not the only celebrity who is a UN Goodwill Ambassador. Audrey Hepburn was the BEST and never to be eclipsed.

It’s a dam shame that some stupid “comedic” actress kept postponing having a baby because she was “busy’ with her stupid show. Meanwhile Angelina has managed to have a bio baby and adopted another son all the while filming and giving an amazing performance in AMH, going on a heavy press tour, traveling for the UNHCR twice including this trip, filming two new movies, attending red carpet events, laughing at tabloid reports and being Brad Pitt’s love. When you have a passion and desire in your life, you find away to multitask as best you can.

New thread fans!

Old tidbit:

Angelina Jolie’s Story

She plays many roles onscreen, but Angelina Jolie never loses sight of her important role as a concerned global citizen and active UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. The dedication to her craft that garnered Angelina an Academy Award for her performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999), is reflected in her efforts for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a UN agency that currently assists 20 million refugees in approximately 120 countries.

Angelina’s involvement with UNHCR began with a mission to Sierra Leone, a small African country that - like the Democratic Republic of the Congo - has been devastated by years of brutal civil war. Seeing firsthand the enormous challenges that refugees face was a life-altering experience for Angelina, who decided to use her fame to aid their cause. In 2001, she was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador.

Although only 28, Angelina’s acting career has already spanned two decades. Her first feature role was in Lookin’ to Get Out (1982), a film co-written and co-produced by her father, the acclaimed actor Jon Voight. Since then, she has received Golden Globe Awards for the television movies George Wallace (1997) and Gia (1998) and her film credits include Hackers (1995), The Bone Collector (1999), Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000), Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003).

As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Angelina uses her status as a superstar to generate media coverage about the plight of refugees and the conditions under which they live. She has traveled widely to remote refugee camps and receiving centers in countries including Tanzania, Namibia, Cambodia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Ecuador. To further raise awareness, she has released her personal journals for select field visits that can be accessed at USA for UNHCR. For her efforts, Angelina has been honored with the Church World Service Immigration and Refugee Program Humanitarian Award.

While hosting What’s Going On? Angelina was inspired by the stories of the Fataki brothers, Echa Nyange and Sofia Mocke, all children living at the Lugufu refugee camp in Tanzania.

Tragically, their stories are all too familiar to Angelina, who has met thousands of men, women, and children forced to flee from their homes and struggle to survive as refugees. “You go to these places and you realize what life’s really about and what people are really going through,” says Angelina. “These people are my heroes.”

tabloid nation @ 08/28/2007 at 5:17 pm

The War needs to stop for these people to go back home.

Jolie is a twofaced coward. She doesn’t even care about these people, just photo op.

I think she’s the one that jump off the frying pan. Seriously, she is 10.

If you want to say something…don’t hold back but at least show who you really are. Underhanded and so dishonest still even with the computer screen to shield you. Now is that a mark of a good character?

She has absolutely no buisness meddling in world politics. No one wants to listen to someone that fraternizes with terrorists. She needs to stick with what she does best, volunteer for the do nothing agency(U.N) being a ho and making crappy movies. I can’t seem to find any respect for this pitiful excuse of a woman. Celebrity self importance overload indeed!!!!!!

You are the pitiful excuse of a human being! Why do you call the refugees terrorist???? You are a Nincompoop and an Idiot. You are the one that doesn’t deserve respect with that moronic thinking of yours.

Thanks for the thread Just Jared. AJ is a woman that I admire. Her commitment to her UN duties shows a woman of character. She sets a path and follows it. Many shallow and trivial Hollywood actresses can learn from AJ. She will always be a controversial figure because many cannot get pass her looks, her so called past, her family or her relationship. However, AJ ignores the buzz around her and continue to do her work. I wish the people of Iraq particularly the Refugees aid for their plight and I wish the soldiers fighting in Iraq a safe return home. Best wishes to BAMPZS and peace to all.

Adopting a ‘Brangelina’ Standard
BY ALICIA COLON
August 28, 2007
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/61453

The “Brangelina” brood hit Manhattan last week and was assaulted by the paparazzi, tourists, and the ignorant, who think nothing about invading the privacy of a celebrity family. Naturally, anonymous Web posters spewed their hateful envy on various entertainment forums and inevitably one nastily inquired why Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt didn’t adopt American orphans. But, according to a terrific book, “The Baby Thief: The Untold Story of Georgia Tann, the Baby Seller Who Corrupted Adoption,” by Barbara Bisantz Raymond, adopting in America hasn’t always been the safest option.

Recently, New York was rocked by the arrest of Judith Leekin, who allegedly collected nearly $3 million in an adoption scam that began in the 1970s with two foster boys in Queens. She subsequently adopted several disabled New York children and was under investigation for alleged cruelty when she fled to Florida. The teenage children in her care were found in what police in Port St. Lucie, Fla., reportedly called a house of horrors.

Before reading about the case, I had no idea that the city made supplemental payments after children are adopted, but there is a lot about this case that appears to confound even the authorities. After Ms. Leekin’s arrest, the city’s Administration for Children’s Services scrambled to explain how she had been allowed to take the children in while using different names. The ACS said the adoptions had taken place before the policy of taking fingerprints from adoptive parents to verify their identity was introduced in 1999. The authorities in Florida have asked a New York Family Court judge to unseal the adoption records in the hopes they may shed some light on the alleged scam. Four adoption agencies are believed to be involved, but until the documents that have been requested — birth certificates and caseworker reports — are obtained, they can’t identify the agency or agencies that did the placements.

The scandal is eerily familiar to what has been uncovered about “baby thief” Georgia Tann. I met the author of the new book that tells the thief’s story, Ms. Raymond, a Queens resident who is herself an adoptive mother, and was shocked to learn the implications of Tann’s crimes, even though they occurred decades ago. Ms. Raymond told me Tann was involved in more than 1,000 adoptions in New York.

Tann was a highly respected director of an orphanage in Memphis, Tenn., who used her position to oversee more than 30 years of baby-stealing, baby-selling, and abuse. While she is credited with popularizing the worthy undertaking of adoption, she corrupted the mission by arranging adoptions for profit to the rich, the famous, and the unfit to parent. Joan “No Wire Hangers!” Crawford was one of her clients, and we all have heard from her two adopted children just how unfit a mother she was.

Tann operated between the 1920s and 1950s under the auspices of a Memphis mayor, Edward Hull Crump, and employed a wide network that included judges, attorneys, and social workers whom she would bribe with “free babies.” These children came to her after being seen by “spotters” who either targeted babies ripe for abduction or located desperate single women seeking a better future for their child.

Many of the birth certificates she provided as part of the adoption process were altered, and she was the chief force behind the legislation that sealed these records. Tann and her cohorts convinced the powers that be that her stolen and kidnapped children, as well as all other legally or illegally adopted children, should be forevermore barred from accessing the simple facts of their birth that most people take for granted.

Ms. Raymond told me her daughter has met her biological mother and that, although it may be painful for adoptive parents, they should support their search. I asked her if opening the adoption records would discourage adoptions. “On the contrary,” she said, “Alaska and Kansas are the only two states that have always allowed adoptees access to their birth certificates and adoptions there have increased.”

Tennessee passed a law in 1996 that allows access to birth records. Since then, five other states have passed similar laws. According to Ms. Raymond, open records bills are pending in seven more states, including New York.

I recommend her book to our Legislature because while the Brangelina children know the answer to “Who am I?” every other adopted child here deserves to have that answer as well.
