Angelina Jolie Visits Iraq
UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie traveled to Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the humanitarian needs there — the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict in Iraq.
According to UNHCR, “Yesterday in Damascus (Syria), Jolie visited a UNHCR registration center and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.”
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Angie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
While in Iraq, Jolie also took the time to privately visit US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.

Thanks Jared for the new thread.
Common sense should tell people Angie was long gone before the information was release.
I am so proud of Angie and to be a fan of hers. Rock on Angie!
Slayer, The: I don’t understand why people believe she hates the US either, but some of it definitely formed right after 9/11 when she said that we should also remember the Afghan refugees who were innocent (I’m not directly quoting, just summing up what I can remember). A lot of people thought it was ill-timed and inappropriate. So, from that, a lot of people immediately labeled her the next Jane Fonda. But she hasn’t done anything to deserve that type of criticism. I think she’s made comments about being proud to be born American before. I think in her book maybe.

Next Jane Fonda? What did Jane Fonda do that was similar?
What, only 24 comments? Where’s the throngs of Angie/Brad zombies? Still waiting.
Ok while I admire her need to play mother theresa, I’m sorry but she’s not doing anything that other folks out there arn’t. Draw attention to what, everyone knows what the hell is going on, American’s are killing Arabs over oil. We don’t need Angie to tell us something we all know since we watch the news and pay taxes, which helps kill more innocent people.
I’m just tired of these celebs acting like they’re going to save the world by adopting Afrikan babies and traveling in their private jets to 3rd world countries all in the name of bringing attention to causes when really all they’re really doing is bringing attention to themselves.
And don’t misunderstand I am not hating but maybe the problem with this country is that we get our info about serious world issues through celebrities instead of policy makers. That dumb beauty contestant last week and her ramblings showed how little we all know about ourselves and our world. I would much rather get my info from journalists and educators rather than Angelina or anyone else trying to “bring attention to serious issues.” Angie should go take care of her children and eat a sandwhich and worry about her own family instead of parading them around the world.

Nobody is calling her Mother Teresa but the haters, such as those in Dlisted and PerezHilton. They are using it to mock her, like Santa Angelina.
More power to Angelina for all her humanitarian. professional and personal endeavors!!!! GREAT ROLE MODEL!!!
one day at the park next day in a war torn country
Tammy # 24: No creo que ella sea la mujer más grande de todos los tiempos, PERO SÍ de los tiempos modernos!!!
You know UNHCR workers and non-famous people are in and out of Iraq all the time. Let’s not forget the media (reporters, cameramen, etc..). So if Angie went I am sure she took precautions. So stop freaking out and listening to the idiots. She is still a UNHCR ambassador doing her job. Rock on Angie. Your true fans love ya.
Slayer, The: Jane Fonda is still held as the #1 hated celeb from her comments and acts during the Vietnam War against our troops (vets still run around with the anti-Jane bumper stickers). I wasn’t saying she did anything like Jane Fonda, but that was the closest analogy I could think of where someone else got ridiculed for actions during a bad situation (like 9/11). Personally, I wasn’t offended by anything Angie did b/c she was right about the innocent refugees in Afghanistan…
Go back to watch FOX news
Angelina is truly exceptional and I’m proud to be one of her fans.

Don’t know if anyone has posted this, but it came from the UNHCR website (www.unhcr.org)
Angelina Jolie highlights humanitarian crisis during Syria and Iraq visits
DAMASCUS, Syria, August 28 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has visited Iraq and Syria to see first-hand the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the conflict in Iraq.
The UN refugee agency estimates more than 4. 2 million Iraqis have left their homes – 2 million to neighbouring states and another 2.2 million displaced inside Iraq.
Yesterday in Damascus, Jolie visited a UNHCR registration centre and spent hours talking to Iraqi refugees in their homes. Today, she crossed into Iraq to visit 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp at the border, unable to flee Iraq, and later watched scores of Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.
As a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie said she would leave politics to others while focusing on the region’s huge humanitarian needs.
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the humanitarian plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with some of the stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Jolie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
While in Iraq, she separated from UNHCR to visit privately with US troops and other Multi-National Forces based in the area.
Jolie arrived in Syria on Monday. In Damascus, she met some of the thousands of Iraqi refugees registering with UNHCR, nearly one-quarter of whom are victims of violence and torture. Tens of thousands are without jobs, and many young people are in danger of losing out on an education and a future. She recognized Syria for its open borders and generosity to Iraqis.
In late July, UNHCR and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched a joint US$129 million education appeal aimed at getting 155,000 young Iraqi refugees throughout the Middle East back into school. The United States announced Tuesday that it will contribute US$30 million to the appeal.

“Ok while I admire her need to play mother theresa”
Maybe when you help out you have a need to play “mother theresa.”
This is serious business for Angie. She has been doing it for 6 years. When are you people going to wake up and smell the coffee. She is the real deal. So stop with your hating and criticisms. Have you been to Iraq? Are you helping out?
Ok, go back and read my entire statements from the beginning of this blog entry. You came into the middle of a question someone asked me about something earlier. Read everything before you assume something. Thanks!
Slayer my point exactly, again you are talking about bloggers. Why don’t you go ask policy makers, real journalist and politicians what they think of Ms. Jolie. Maybe then you will understand my point instead of coming back at my talking about stupid perez.
GOD BLESS YOU ANGIE,because i have cousins fighting in the army also friends of my grandkids that graduated same time they did serving, may GOD watch over OUR TROOPS and all the poor people caught in the middle, thank -you angie for taking time out to go visit them and to put your life on the line, love you angie.
she will probably come back with another kid from there so is so damn stupid

I normally don’t say a whole lot about this family, but I really hope Angie is safe on her trip to visit refugees in Syria/Iraq. She has 4 precious children at home to put first and I hope she takes all measures to ensure her safety.
But I do highly applaud her because through this war, a lot of people have forgotten about the innocent people who have been uprooted and lost virtually everything they own. She always seems to be on top of bringing attention to the current refugee situations across the globe. I am really proud of her for not only speaking about her aid work, but actually doing something by placing herself in dangerous situations to bring awareness.
So, God Bless Angelina and I will pray for her mission and safe return to her family.
