Angelina Jolie UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Fact Sheet 􀂾

In early 2001, Angelina Jolie approached the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) asking how she could help refugees. She wanted to learn more about humanitarian field operations. Shortly after spending a day in briefings with UNHCR in Washington DC, she was on her way to Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Sierra Leone, where she spent several weeks meeting refugees and working with UNHCR field staff. 􀂾

During the summer of 2001 she travelled with UNHCR through Cambodia (July) and later spent a week with Afghan refugees in Pakistan (August). On August 27, Jolie was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, accepting the responsibility of meeting with and advocating for the protection of refugees on five continents.

For over five years, Jolie has travelled with UNHCR to remote and desolate regions, meeting refugees and field workers in some 20 countries and regions including Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Cambodia, Thailand, Ecuador, Kenya, Namibia, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, the Russian Federation, Jordan, Egypt, Chad, Sudan’s Darfur region, Lebanon, India and Costa Rica. She has kept journals during several of her missions. Journals of her first four missions were published two years ago in a book, “Notes from My Travels, Visits with Refugees in Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan and Ecuador” (October 2003, Simon and Schuster).

Her more recent field visit journals are published on UNHCR’s international website (www.unhcr.org/goodwill). REFUGEE RIGHTS – Children & Schools: In addition to her field work, Jolie is a dedicated advocate for refugee rights, meeting with senior government officials in many countries. She is also active with schools and promotion of UNHCR’s education materials. For the past four years, she has been the honorary patron of the annual World Refugee Day school poster contest in the United States and in 2004 was honorary patron of the Greek Schools Essay Contest on refugee issues, in partnership with the Ministry of Education.

In March 2005, she was the guest of honour with General Colin Powell at the USA for UNHCR/Kuwait – America Foundation Benefit Dinner raising $1 million for Iraqi refugee women and children. On that occasion, she announced the opening of the new National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, and continued her advocacy for the right of unaccompanied children seeking asylum in the US, with meetings on Capitol Hill.

In May 2006, Jolie supported a nationwide event in Sweden dubbed “Operation A Day’s Work”, held every year by the Swedish Student Organisation to fund an educational project in a developing country. This year’s beneficiaries were Congolese refugee children who attend UNHCR’s schools at the Gihembe refugee camp in Rwanda. She thanked participating high school students in an open letter, which was widely published by the Swedish press.

Nearly 80,000 Swedish teenagers from some 250 high schools participated in the campaign, raising more than $750,000, with other campaign projects set for late 2006. WORLD REFUGEE DAY (20 JUNE): Jolie is an active participant in World Refugee Day on 20 June each year, hosting public events and speaking to the media about her concern for refugees. On 16 June 2004, she launched a five-day series of World Refugee Day events in Washington DC, with UNHCR and Secretary of State Colin Powell as well as several other senior government officials. Jolie is lobbying for and sponsoring a project with UNHCR in the United States which will help ensure legal counsel and assistance to unaccompanied minors seeking asylum.

After this she travelled to Barcelona for World Refugee Day events with UNHCR and many prestigious guests in the context of the Barcelona Forum. On the evening of 20 June 2004, she was guest of honour at the Nansen Refugee Award ceremony. On 15 June 2005, Jolie launched multiple World Refugee Day activities in Washington D.C. together with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who provided protection to people fleeing the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. She also met with US Senators on Capitol Hill seeking support for urgent refugee relief and protection operations. For World Refugee Day in 2006, Jolie appeared in a 30-second TV spot and urged the world not to forget refugees. Her message was broadcast around the world in public service time.

She was also the featured guest in a two-hour interview with CNN, which was broadcast on World Refugee Day. She expressed her concern for refugees and talked about her field travels and experiences as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. BUSINESS LEADERS: In January 2005, Jolie participated in the 2005 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. She was participated in panel sessions leading discussions about corporate action for addressing the plight of refugees around the world.

She emphasized the important role the private sector can play in empowering refugees, enhancing their skills set and ensuring they are positive change agents for development. In January 2006, she participated in the 2006 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum. She talked about the linkage between human rights and refugee rights, and drew the attention of the participants to forgotten humanitarian emergencies.

AWARDS: In October 2003, Jolie was awarded the first UNCA Citizen of the World award by the United Nations Correspondents Association in New York. The award recognized the value of her work as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, bringing forgotten refugee crises to the attention of the world media. On October 11 2005, Jolie accepted the 2005 Global Humanitarian Action Award from the United Nations Association of the USA and the Business Council for the United Nations. The award honoured Jolie for fulfilling her work as a Goodwill Ambassador with vigour and valuable insight, and being a voice for millions of refugees and internally displaced people around the world.

I remembered Jessica Lange mission in Eastern Congo. She saw the suffering of very young girls some as young as Z who were raped and severely wounded when they didn’t died from it.

I remembered her saying that what she saw in those refuge camps were beyond the unbearable and the worst she ever saw in any other refuge camp she has visited in other countries. She talked about pictures of raped victims that was unthinkable, that the UN kept on registred on files and she was crying when describing the worst mankind can do.

A source close to Jolie told Huffington Post, “It’s been in the works for about six months. She spent a lot of time being briefed by experts. She met with a large number of experts on Syria, Iraq, the refuge crisis and other issues in preparation for the trip.” The source added, “She considered her time with American troops to be one of the most important parts of the trip.”

Thanks for the information. A UN trip to Iraq is not a photo op or a lark. It takes time and preparation not to mentioned extensive briefings. It takes a dedicated person to invest time, money and energy into this visit. Many may whine and nag on a blog and see this as a big achievement but there are bigger problems out there. The “Brangelina” brood hit Manhattan last week and was assaulted by the paparazzi, tourists, and the ignorant, who think nothing about invading the privacy of a celebrity family. Naturally, anonymous Web posters spewed their hateful envy on various entertainment forums and inevitably one nastily inquired why Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt didn’t adopt American orphans. But, according to a terrific book, “The Baby Thief: The Untold Story of Georgia Tann, the Baby Seller Who Corrupted Adoption,” by Barbara Bisantz Raymond, adopting in America hasn’t always been the safest option.

Recently, New York was rocked by the arrest of Judith Leekin, who allegedly collected nearly $3 million in an adoption scam that began in the 1970s with two foster boys in Queens. She subsequently adopted several disabled New York children and was under investigation for alleged cruelty when she fled to Florida. The teenage children in her care were found in what police in Port **. Lucie, Fla., reportedly called a house of horrors.

Before reading about the case, I had no idea that the city made supplemental payments after children are adopted, but there is a lot about this case that appears to confound even the authorities. After Ms. Leekin’s arrest, the city’s Administration for Children’s Services scrambled to explain how she had been allowed to take the children in while using different names. The ACS said the adoptions had taken place before the policy of taking fingerprints from adoptive parents to verify their identity was introduced in 1999. The authorities in Florida have asked a New York Family Court judge to unseal the adoption records in the hopes they may shed some light on the alleged scam. Four adoption agencies are believed to be involved, but until the documents that have been requested — birth certificates and caseworker reports — are obtained, they can’t identify the agency or agencies that did the placements.

The scandal is eerily familiar to what has been uncovered about “baby thief” Georgia Tann. I met the author of the new book that tells the thief’s story, Ms. Raymond, a Queens resident who is herself an adoptive mother, and was shocked to learn the implications of Tann’s crimes, even though they occurred decades ago. Ms. Raymond told me Tann was involved in more than 1,000 adoptions in New York.

Tann was a highly respected director of an orphanage in Memphis, Tenn., who used her position to oversee more than 30 years of baby-stealing, baby-selling, and abuse. While she is credited with popularizing the worthy undertaking of adoption, she corrupted the mission by arranging adoptions for profit to the rich, the famous, and the unfit to parent. Joan “No Wire Hangers!” Crawford was one of her clients, and we all have heard from her two adopted children just how unfit a mother she was.

Tann operated between the 1920s and 1950s under the auspices of a Memphis mayor, Edward Hull Crump, and employed a wide network that included judges, attorneys, and social workers whom she would bribe with “free babies.” These children came to her after being seen by “spotters” who either targeted babies ripe for abduction or located desperate single women seeking a better future for their child.

Many of the birth certificates she provided as part of the adoption process were altered, and she was the chief force behind the legislation that sealed these records. Tann and her cohorts convinced the powers that be that her stolen and kidnapped children, as well as all other legally or illegally adopted children, should be forevermore barred from accessing the simple facts of their birth that most people take for granted.

Ms. Raymond told me her daughter has met her biological mother and that, although it may be painful for adoptive parents, they should support their search. I asked her if opening the adoption records would discourage adoptions. “On the contrary,” she said, “Alaska and Kansas are the only two states that have always allowed adoptees access to their birth certificates and adoptions there have increased.”

Tennessee passed a law in 1996 that allows access to birth records. Since then, five other states have passed similar laws. According to Ms. Raymond, open records bills are pending in seven more states, including New York.

I recommend her book to our Legislature because while the Brangelina children know the answer to “Who am I?” every other adopted child here deserves to have that answer as well.

The photo was taken today at Camp Waleed in Iraq, near the Waleed refugee camp that Angelina visited this morning. Angelina left partner Brad Pitt and their four children, Maddox, 6, Pax, 3, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 15 months, back in New York City, the Goodwill Ambassador jetted to Damascus, Syria on Monday afternoon to visit a UNHCR registration center and talk to dozens of Iraqi refugees in their homes.

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said in a statement. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”

On Tuesday, the Oscar winner ventured over into Iraq to meet with American and international troops, in addition to the 1,200 refugees stationed at a makeshift outpost, as they are unable to leave the country.

Angelina departed for the airport shortly after Brad and the kids’ return from their lunch date at Maddox’s favorite stomping grounds, Mars 2112. The source adds that Holly, Ange’s longtime assistant, is watching the four while the actress is overseas and Brad is at production meetings for his upcoming flick Burn After Reading.

The children were not told where their mother was going, only that she would be gone for a few days.

GENEVA - Angelina Jolie visited Iraq on Tuesday to meet with refugees and U.S. troops in the country.

Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, made the visit during a two-day trip to the region, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday.

The statement said the 32-year-old actress met with displaced Iraqis in neighboring Syria on Monday before crossing into Iraq for a few hours Tuesday “to see firsthand the plight of hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the ongoing conflict.”

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” the Geneva-based agency quoted Jolie as saying.

Jolie traveled to the Al-Waleed refugee camp on the Iraqi side of the border and spoke to some of the 1,200 Iraqis living there before visiting a contingent of U.S. troops in the area, the agency said.

UNHCR spokeswoman Astrid Van Genderen Stort said the trip had been organized weeks in advance at Jolie’s request.

Jolie has worked with UNHCR since early 2001. In May, a foundation set up by Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, donated $1 million to help those affected by the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region and neighboring Chad.

The U.N. refugee agency estimates that more than 4.2 million Iraqis have left their homes — most of them since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein. Of these, about 2 million have fled to neighboring countries including Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon.

According to UNHCR, thousands of Iraqis continue to stream into Syria every day, placing a heavy strain on the country’s housing, health care and education sectors.

Last month the agency and UNICEF launched an appeal for nearly $130 million to help provide education to displaced Iraqi children across the Middle East. The U.S. said Tuesday it would contribute $30 million to the appeal.

I think civilians should not be allowed to go into Iraq. It is way too volatile and dangerous. What the hell in wrong with our government allowing this. THERE IS A WAR GOING ON OVER THERE! THERE IS A WAR GOING ON OVER THERE! There have been dozens of reporters who have lost their lives over there. Keep civilians out of there.

While the so-called governments of countries where there are refugees are often highly aware of the state of the refugee problem and dont or cant do anything about it, the people of those countries are often unaware of the scope of the problem. And, most importantly, the WORLD COMMUNITY OF HUMAN BEINGS (that would exclude you, of course) are completely ignorant about it or have completely forgotten about it. Her task is to remind you ADDs and others who are very busy with their own lives, that these people need help.

The UN and related agencies (red cross, etc) have the responsibility of feeding and clothing the refugees amd providing temporary housing solutions. To continue doing this, they need a CONSTANT FLOW OF MONEY from both private and public entities of every country of the world.

When, thru Angie’s visits and the accompanying publicity, ordinary people become apprised of the situation, the conscientious among us dig as deep into our pockets as we can afford, and give to the UN and related agencies.

The record shows, that EVERY TIME that Angie does on of her visits, MONEY FLOWS to the UN to help the refugees. She just rolls like dat. Everything she touches turns to gold because she is BLESSED!

I find it funny when one doubters/haters mentioned why won’t Angelina scream her thoughts on the war going on. Well she’s a Goodwill Ambassador & being as a diplomat you have to act one & try not to take sides. Also, since Angelina will still needs funding & aid from the current goverment so it would be inappropriate & not nice to bad-mouth them. Angelina can only do much under the guidance of the UN & she cannot do more than that. If they ask her to go to certain parts of the world to observe & visit she has to oblige & do just that…to observe, take notes & visit & then report back to the UN.

Angelina is one of the few women today who is truly worth admiring. She has been doing this for six years, even before she met Brad so i dont understand why certain people keep on harping that this is all for publicity.

US Agrees To Give Money For Refugees After Angelina Jolie Visits Syria And Iraq – Bush Administration Will Bring In More Iraqis

Angelina Jolie is traveling to Iraq and Syria as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations. The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, is using the “Tomb Raider” star to highlight the plight of hundreds of thousands of families who were displaced by the conflict in Iraq. It is estimated that 4. 2 million Iraqis have left their homes.

The UNHCR says that 2 million refugees left Iraq and another 2.2 million are displaced inside the country. Syria has seen the brunt of the exodus. On Monday she visited Damascus Syria on her way to Iraq. She spent several hours in a “makeshift camp” in Iraq at the border with Syria. These refugees were unable to leave Iraq.

Jolies fame may help those in need at camps inside and outside Syria. Families have been forced to move and resources have been in short supply, according to the UNHCR.

“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the humanitarian plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”

After visiting refugees stranded at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp on Tuesday, Jolie said: “it is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”

In Damascus she visited a registration area for the UNHCR. The UN agency reports that “nearly one-quarter of (the refugees) are victims of violence and torture. Tens of thousands are without jobs, and many young people are in danger of losing out on an education and a future.”

The UN says that Syria has been generous with “open borders” for some time now while other countries have criticized the US for not sharing in the responsibility. Although the United States has only taken in hundreds of refugees from Iraq so far, the Bush Administration has promised to start bringing in many more.

Her mission may be working. On Tuesday the United States announced that it will contribute US$30 million to the appeal.

Angelina is still confirmed to play the role of Dagny Taggart in the Ayn Rand film adaptation of “Atlas Shrugged”. The IMDB website reports that the project has been “indefinitely delayed”.

Prove it!! How do you know what she has done in NYC or anywhere? Liberian refugee women stitch together new future after Angelina Jolie skills course

LARGO CAMP, Sierra Leone, Feb. 23 (UNHCR) – There was an atmosphere of joy and jubilation in Largo refugee camp last week when 50 Liberian refugee women each received a sewing machine after successfully completing a sewing skills course, funded by UNHCR’s goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie.

“Today, our dreams have come true and for this we are very grateful. When we came to the camp, we did not know anything. But, with the skills that we have learned, we now know how to sew both for children and adults, we can return to Liberia and will be able to do something on our own,” said Sangay Kawala on behalf of the trainees.

At the graduation ceremony the refugees sang songs in praise of Angelina Jolie and UNHCR. The Goodwill Ambassador donated the funds for the sewing courses in four refugee camps in Sierra Leone, including buying some of the sewing machines distributed to participants. UNHCR also helped fund the sewing machine purchase in Largo camp.

“I would like to congratulate all of you on the completion of your training. You deserve the certificates and sewing machines,” UNHCR’s Kenema sub-office head Ibrahima Coly said to loud cheers and applause. Coly encouraged the refugees to use their sewing machines to help them stitch together a new future and help others.

The majority of the group and their families have signed up to repatriate back to Liberia shortly, joining some 50,000 Liberian refugees from around West Africa who have now returned home since the official repatriation started. Back in Liberia, their sewing skills will be crucial to help them restart their lives.

“The future is now in your hands. Please make the best use of it. I would also like to appeal to you to kindly assist to train other refugees or returnees who were not privileged to get the machines. I wish you all good luck in your future career,” Coly told the happy graduates.

The main aim of the sewing project was to build the capacity of refugee nursing mothers, improving their nutritional status by giving them skills to generate income, says training programme coordinator Magdalene Dakowa of Catholic Relief Services. Another aim was for the sewing groups in each of the camps to produce 500 baby clothes for refugee children.

The initial six-month training project started in January 2004. The course was so successful that the trainees went on to produce children’s clothes for both refugees and host communities as a way of continuing their career development. During this period the women in Largo camp were contracted to produce school uniforms by one of UNHCR’s partners. The graduation ceremony marked the conclusion of their career training.

Funds for the project were also used to help 500 other refugee women improve their backyard gardening, again to help improve the nutritional status of the refugees.

At the graduation ceremony, five trainers of the project – three men and two women – also each received one machine. One of the trainers, Isata Koroma, came from the host community.

“The sewing machine that I have received will help me and my family,” said Isata. “I am a single mother. My husband was killed in the war in my country, Sierra Leone, and it has been really difficult for me to take care of our seven children. I am very grateful for this assistance.”

There are eight refugee camps in Sierra Leone hosting some 46,000 refugees, with most coming from Liberia’s most devastated Lofa County. With the positive changes taking place in Liberia UNHCR is now actively promoting voluntary repatriation for an estimated 160,000 Liberian refugees still outside their homeland. Some 46,000 Liberian refugees remain in camps in Sierra Leone with Largo camp hosting 5,300 refugees.
