Angelina Jolie Highlights Humanitarian Crisis
UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie listens to one elderly refugee’s story at the makeshift Al Waleed camp inside Iraq on Tuesday. This woman is just one of some 1,300 trapped unable to leave the country for neighboring Syria.
Angie has worked with UNHCR since early 2001. In May, a foundation set up by Angie and Brad Pitt, donated $1 million to help those affected by the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region and neighboring Chad.
UPDATE 1: The Huffington Post reports Angie gain flew commercial with no staff, as she did with Darfur last year. She is stealth! (Head bodyguard Mickey Brett did tag along, though.)
UPDATE 2: OK! Magazine just updated their site with Angelina posting with Lance Corporal Samuel Petersen, 22, of the US Marine Corps.

Well why don’t say it aloud Angie? End the War it’s making too many refugees? Or let the refugees say it for themselves.
What a attention hore!
Hey guys, I had a great idea! You know all that Smartwater X couldn’t sell? Maybe she can donate it to Greece to help them put out some of those fires! All that unsold Smartwater just sitting around going to waste — they could probably put out a blazing inferno with that stuff! It’s about time she did something nice for somebody else, isn’t it?

Angelina Visits Refugees And Troops In Syria And Iraq After Months Of Preparation
Huffington Post Entertainment | Katherine Thomson | August 28, 2007 04:35 PM
Angelina Jolie wrapped up a two-day trip to Syria and Iraq Tuesday in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Jolie took this trip to witness the hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by the war in Iraq and to visit with US soldiers.
A source close to Jolie told Huffington Post, “It’s been in the works for about six months. She spent a lot of time being briefed by experts. She met with a large number of experts on Syria, Iraq, the refuge crisis and other issues in preparation for the trip.” The source added, “She considered her time with American troops to be one of the most important parts of the trip.”
Yesterday Jolie visited a UNHCR registration center in Damascus, spent time with those registering and spoke at length with Iraqi refugees in their homes. Thousands of Iraqi refugees are registering with UNHCR, nearly a quarter of whom are victims of violence and torture.
Today she crossed the border into Iraq, visited some of the 1,200 refugees trapped in a makeshift camp who can’t flee Iraq and witnessed Iraqis crossing into Syria at a border checkpoint.
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to this humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Jolie said. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
After talking with stranded refugees at Iraq’s Al Waleed camp today Jolie added, “It is absolutely essential that the ongoing debate about Iraq’s future includes plans for addressing the enormous humanitarian consequences these people face.”
Jolie then broke off from UNHCR and privately visited both U.S. troops and those from other nations.
The trip was a low-key one for Jolie. Asked how the actress/activist had traveled to the region, the source told Huffington Post, “She flew over commercially to Syria. No staff.”
OK! has just obtained the first shot of Angelina Jolie visiting American troops stationed in Iraq. The Oscar-winner is there to witness a firsthand account of the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country and has flown there solo.
In this exclusive shot, Angie poses with Denver native Lance Corporal Samuel Petersen, 22, of the US Marine Corps. The photo was taken today at Camp Waleed in Iraq, near the Waleed refugee camp that Angelina visited this morning. According to Petersen’s mother Sue tells OK! that the Marines at this camp are training the Iraqi police how to do border patrol.
Angelina left partner Brad Pitt and their four children, Maddox, 6, Pax, 3, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 15 months, back in New York City, the Goodwill Ambassador jetted to Damascus, Syria on Monday afternoon to visit a UNHCR registration center and talk to dozens of Iraqi refugees in their homes.
“I have come to Syria and Iraq to help draw attention to the humanitarian crisis and to urge governments to increase their support for UNHCR and its partners,” Angelina said in a statement. “My sole purpose in both countries is to highlight the plight of those uprooted by the war in Iraq.”
On Tuesday, the Oscar winner ventured over into Iraq to meet with American and international troops, in addition to the 1,200 refugees stationed at a makeshift outpost, as they are unable to leave the country.
For safety reasons, the 32-year-old made the trip by herself save for Mickey Brett, her head bodyguard, sources tell OK!
Angelina departed for the airport shortly after Brad and the kids’ return from their lunch date at Maddox’s favorite stomping grounds, Mars 2112. The source adds that Holly, Ange’s longtime assistant, is watching the four while the actress is overseas and Brad is at production meetings for his upcoming flick Burn After Reading.
The children were not told where their mother was going, only that she would be gone for a few days.

I was already over there, hon. Z is too cute for words, isn’t she? Such a little diva, and she’s definitely Daddy’s little princess. Angelina and the kids are the best thing that ever happened to him. But don’t tell the haters that, they’re going bananas already just seeing those pictures.
And of course, here come the trolls whining WHERE’S SHILOH as if they give a fat rat where Shiloh is. If Shiloh’s in the photos, she’s being used for a photo op. If Shiloh’s not in the photos, she’s being neglected. These clowns crack me up. They will never forgive Angelina for having the child they think X should have had instead. As if. X won’t even pick up and hold her own godchild, and the trolls fantasize about her taking Shiloh. Are they all on crack or just stupid?

Jill , I wholeheartedly support your idea!!!
You made me so proud more to be your fan, you put your life on the line to make a point to show the world the plight of these refugees. I know it’s hard to see what’s going on around the world but someone has to do it & Ange is one of them who put the life of others before her. That’s one courageous woman & passionate one.She will report to high commissioner what she sees in that refugee camps & it’s up to the people like us to help & the govt. officials to do more. Stay safe Ange, my prayers are with you always.I hope, you & Brad will go to Venice together, for you to relax & be with Brad without the kids & have a good time.
Boohoo, beautiful rich Angelina feels soooo bad for the poor old ugly Arab woman. Heartbreaking. Not! Man that really is an ugly old ************!
What an amazing person Angelina is!!!
May she always inspire more people to help others. Angelina is fierce (she leads her life on her own terms) and she is full of compassion (she gives her unconditional commitment in making a difference to the needy and impoverished).
I know I am late to this discussion, but I just want to share my two cents opinion on AG’s (African Girl) question on how we can educate those who negate the good work and true contribution of people like Angelina….The answer is complicated. It requires deep philosophical and psychosocial discourse to come up with a rational answer. However, in the interest of time, the shortest answer I say, is that, it is not easy to educate people about good and evil (morality), when they themselves are deprived of basic educational opportunities and rights to access to human respect and kindness.
We learn through imitation (as one of the many ways to acquire knowledge) - unfortunately, for others, they have limited access to explore the world where peace and love exist….
The Jolie-Pitt fans should not be deter from the naysayers. There is always someone out there, who will continue living in hate - and that is a given….
Hi to MF (Missouri Fan) - kindly share little Bradley’s birthday picture….
Hi Guli - hope the weather where you’re at, is getting better.
Hi Curly - good to see you posting.
Meli - I hope the fire near your village is finally contained. Be safe….
What’s so important about speaking out against the war? Many have already done so, including some in Congress, the UN, and the House. Has it stopped it? NO. So, either Angie is so powerful, that by her just speaking against the war, will stop it, or, she’s not powerful at all, and should just sit home and play with her kids. Which one is it?
It’s neither, you fool. She is who she is and I’m glad for it. Stop repeating your insipid mantra.

LOL, they might as well do something with that water since nobody’s drinking it…
For people who ridicules Ange & Brad for the humanitarian works that they are doing I only have this word to say “SHAME ON YOU”.
Oh woow 2 days of visiting a foreign country. Big Deal.
I would have gone for 2 weeks.
Whoa, I was not sure which one was the elderly refug good thing for the bulletproof vest, otherwise I could not tell the difference btwn the two. I am sorry her forhead is fricken HUGE!

what is the use to speak out against the war before? –the whole country was behind Bush!
Besides, Angelina has to lobby Washington to pass some bills awhile ago. How is that gonna help to bad mouth Bush?
271 Bummer : 08/28/2007 at 9:49 pm

I love that she raises awareness by going there and sharing the refugees stories. She is so brave to get involved with a subject like this. She believes everyone should be equal and this is why I admire her.
