Angelina Jolie Highlights Humanitarian Crisis

UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie listens to one elderly refugee’s story at the makeshift Al Waleed camp inside Iraq on Tuesday. This woman is just one of some 1,300 trapped unable to leave the country for neighboring Syria.

Angie has worked with UNHCR since early 2001. In May, a foundation set up by Angie and Brad Pitt, donated $1 million to help those affected by the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region and neighboring Chad.

UPDATE 1: The Huffington Post reports Angie gain flew commercial with no staff, as she did with Darfur last year. She is stealth! (Head bodyguard Mickey Brett did tag along, though.)

UPDATE 2: OK! Magazine just updated their site with Angelina posting with Lance Corporal Samuel Petersen, 22, of the US Marine Corps.

What does she think she’s accomplishing with these photo ops?
Really? Is this going to make the Shiites and Sunnis shake hands? Or the Jews and Christians be best of friends? It’s like sticking a daisy in the middle of a junk pile. Looks nice for about 10 seconds and then it dies. Nothing more and nothing less. Let’s drop the illusions, please.
——-
Are you really that ignorant? How many times has it been posted, how many times must you be told that her job as a goodwill ambassador of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) is to highlight the plight of the refugees? It has nothing to do with making the Shiites and Sunnis shake hands.

Yeah and we all know how that turned out. Be careful for wanting Angie so much, the bounty on her head could be tragic. Question is, will all of you that feel that you are entitled to her personal life will feel any responsibility.

People are so unforgiving to understand that Angelina has already grown as a mature and responsible individual. They simply cannot accept that she is no longer the “wild child” that they love to criticize - . Why are they unforgiving? Because, it is the only way that they can feel good about themselves. They are so fearful to see their own flaws, that they needed someone to project their own hate and anger. Too bad for them, Angelina will continue living her life according to her passion and true belief in helping others. While these people who criticize her, will continue being consumed by their own bitterness.

To HATERS! @ 08/29/2007 at 11:53 am

We know why you HATERS hates Angelina so much because ANGIE has a good heart and has done a lot of good than you LOSERS. Most KNOWN PEOPLE had a good comments about her except you HATERS of course because you HATERS are evil. GOOD and EVIL does not go together. sad to say.

She obviously brought a photographer along too.
——-
She will always have a photographer with her on her trips for the UNHCR.
Pictures are part of her press releases after a trip. It’s part of the job. I think the refugee agency arranges that. It’s possible the local office of the agency has a photographer waiting.

251 speak out against war : 08/28/2007 at 8:09 pm
Well why don’t say it aloud Angie? End the War it’s making too many refugees?…….
——-
She is not allowed to. She has to stay out of politics. It’s not part of her job for the UN refugee agency.
I do remember that she has in the past implied that she is against the war in Iraq.

#353 - I totally agree with you.

Somebody needs to send some humanitarian workers to miss Jolie’s house, or better yet, a weight gain specialist. I’ve seen some skinny pics of her, but I just caught these off Life and Style and thought to myself why isn’t someone rushing her to the hospital (I’m talking bout the picture on the left, if you click the zoom button you can see every vain in her arm

Sagging tits, sagging bum and sagging tramp stamps. Good thing she is starting to turn over a good leaf and be a better person bcuz her looks (what she used to ride around in HW) will not cut it anymore. She looks exactly like her mother in that pic

349 marianne : 08/29/2007 at 11:27 am

No, it is not her fault : media don’t pay atention to humanitarian workers, many of them are women, but why doesn’t she talk about these people working in the area when she traveled? No word about them, no photo with them. She is the main character… No her fault but she contributes to the sterotype
——————–

According your reasoning, the UN should completely abandon this Goodwill Ambassador thing. Tell that to the UN.

Her job is to draw attention to the plights of the people, NOT humanitarian workers. Her job is to help solving the problems not who gets attention. Attention is for the sake of solving problems, not vanity. It’s a mean, not an end. I believe most humanitarian workers are there trying to help, not for attention.

She has photos with the people who are suffering and with the soldiers. She has spent hours in interviewing those people.

Difference is before she got knocked up by BP, nobody cared to see that footage. She is loving the PR Pass, I think that is Brad’s new name : Angelina’s PR Pass.

not enough @ 08/29/2007 at 1:33 pm

I really don’t think that Jolie is doing enough. She has ten of millions of dollars and all we hear is oh she gives 1/3 of her income everytime. Does she really keep giving that same amount or is she Just posing for pictures? Why are not photos documenting the workers and volunteers in the refugee camp?

Also we never hear about the conditions of these camps and how long people stay, is the UN using Jolie to coverup their problems? So the attention is focused on her photo op and her glamor and not on the lack of aid given to these war victims?

What amazing hateful BS — WTF do you do of any consequence? 85% of her UNCHR trips have never been publicized. I think she has had photographers on about 4 max. If she chooses to throw her spotlight on real problems and real needs more power to her!

Obviously it makes you and others uncomfortable — wonder why?

Rock on Angelina!

Ever hear of photoshop? Lies & Stuff would go bankrupt if it weren’t for Angelina — and yet her profit-sahre check keeps getting lost.

Whatever AJ loves to travel. It’s another adventure for her.
2 days is not a huge committment!!

If she is such the humanitarian why doesn’t she go visit a homeless shelter in NYC?
Too boring for her!!
She’s a lying, attention seeker, selling photos of her adopted kids to the media.
What was that photo with her and Brad in Africa? Who sells photos to the paps? AJ

IGNORE THE HATERS !!!

Prove it!! How do you know what she has done in NYC or anywhere? She sells photos to get the paps off her ass — and they didn’t offer for Maddox or Zahara just the white kid and Pax — so it seems BP is the factor that generates $$$ not ANGELINA. they didn’t get anything from the photos in Africa if you are talking about Kenya in 2005 — some ass**** razzi got $500 k+ — at least Jolie&Pitt give the money away to charity unlike say Britany Spears! I bet Doctors Without Borders and UNHCR were super glad AJ/BP sold Shiloh’s photos - that $4 million did a lot of good IMO.

You sound like such a HATEFUL bigot!

Proud of you Angelina (and Brad!)

How very sad to read such hated, that’s the bad selfish and creepy crazy ppl (haters) who only hate Angie because she is with Brad Pitt..nothing more.
Brad Pitt wanted to be with Angie and together they have proven to be a very happy generous couple who are wonderful humanitarians fulfilling their lives with love for their children, having amazing hearts of gold for humanity and now leading productive lives as their fame grows and together they have become the most famous icons of the world.
KUDOS to them both!
The nasty ugly haters can’t handle the very fact that BP and AJ have proven to the world this is their life and they love each other very much whether you hater’s like it or not and they as a team don’t care what you think and never will.
How wonderful to read the heart rendering posters ,the knowledgable caring people(fans) here at JJ’s who in turn are relentlessly repling trying their damn.dest to explain to the ignorant hater’s that their lies and hatred towards the BAMPZS FAMILY won’t change a thing,or certainly won’t break up these two beautiful inside and out icons. It’s like you hater’s are trying to beat a dead horse, hmmm you all must lead such pethetic lives.
I like meny other fans am so proud of Angie and her trip to Iraq and all the good she is trying to accomplish .Angie is an amazingly brave young women and once again i am so extremely proud to say i have always been her fan and always will be.
God Bless Angie Brad and their adorable family.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors

You may wonder why we have selected singers, musicians, actors and a high-profile business personality to represent UNHCR around the world. Can their star power raise awareness about the suffering and needs of millions of uprooted people around the world?

While our Goodwill Ambassadors come from diverse backgrounds and have different skills, they share one thing in common – an unstinting willingness to use their time and influence to help those who have been forced to flee their homes due to persecution or conflict. This commitment is invaluable for UNHCR and that’s why we treasure them so highly.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors like Angelina Jolie, George Dalaras and Barbara Hendricks communicate the message of respect and compassion for refugees to the general public in a uniquely powerful way. They are serious, committed and engaged with our mission.

These celebrities use their privileged access to mass media and other resources to give a voice to refugees, who are often victims of forgotten humanitarian crises and who often suffer from uninformed negative stereotyping. Our Goodwill Ambassadors are uniquely positioned to make direct representations to those with the power to effect change.

Working from the heart, they use their talent and fame to fund-raise and lobby for refugees during meetings with world leaders as well as the general public. Their work supports UNHCR’s protect, build and advocate approach – protecting refugees, helping build new lives and advocating for the displaced.

UNHCR first worked with Goodwill Ambassadors in the early 1980s, when British film stars Richard Burton and James Mason helped bring the agency to a wider global audience. Today, eight Goodwill Ambassadors work with us to help the most vulnerable: Barbara Hendricks (named in 1987), Adel Imam (2000), Angelina Jolie (2001), Giorgio Armani (2002), Julien Clerc (2003), George Dalaras (2006), Osvaldo Laport (2006) and Muazzez Ersoy (2007).

These pages give some background about our high-profile celebrity envoys and their work. They are also testament to the positive use of star power for social good. UNHCR Goodwill Ambassadors make a difference.

Jolie-Pitt Foundation donates US$1 million to groups working in Darfur

WASHINGTON, D.C., United States, May 10 (UNHCR) – UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie and actor Brad Pitt have donated US$1 million towards the humanitarian effort assisting millions of people affected by the crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region.

“The donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation will go to three agencies playing key roles in Darfur and neighbouring Chad: the UN refugee agency; the International Rescue Committee and the international non-governmental organization, SOS Children’s Villages,” UNHCR said in a press release issued on Thursday.

All three agencies are active in providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to the more than two million people displaced within Darfur and the 240,000 refugees from Darfur living in camps in eastern Chad.

“This generous donation comes just months after Angelina Jolie made a personal visit to a refugee camp in Chad and it shows, once again, her and Brad Pitts’ commitment to helping refugees and the displaced,” said Michel Gabaudan, UNHCR’s regional representative for the United States and the Caribbean. “As Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie’s continued support of UNHCR and those we seek to help is a powerful force in ensuring they are not forgotten.”

In New York, George Rupp, president of the International Rescue Committee, said, “This donation will make a real difference in the lives of thousands of vulnerable people. We are grateful to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for remembering them.”

Jolie has visited the region three times. During her recent visit to the Oure-Cassoni camp she said she was struck by the sense of hope she encountered and by the widespread desire for peace-keepers to be deployed in eastern Chad.

It was in Oure-Cassoni where Jolie met staff working for SOS Children’s Villages, who are providing psychological assistance to traumatized children.

“The children benefit enormously from the therapy,” said Yolanda van den Broek, project leader of the Emergency Relief Programme of SOS Children’s Villages in Chad. “Children who at first did not speak, did not eat and who were isolated in their own worlds, are now playing happily and are able to interact with others.”

Liberian refugee women stitch together new future after Angelina Jolie skills course

LARGO CAMP, Sierra Leone, Feb. 23 (UNHCR) – There was an atmosphere of joy and jubilation in Largo refugee camp last week when 50 Liberian refugee women each received a sewing machine after successfully completing a sewing skills course, funded by UNHCR’s goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie.

“Today, our dreams have come true and for this we are very grateful. When we came to the camp, we did not know anything. But, with the skills that we have learned, we now know how to sew both for children and adults, we can return to Liberia and will be able to do something on our own,” said Sangay Kawala on behalf of the trainees.

At the graduation ceremony the refugees sang songs in praise of Angelina Jolie and UNHCR. The Goodwill Ambassador donated the funds for the sewing courses in four refugee camps in Sierra Leone, including buying some of the sewing machines distributed to participants. UNHCR also helped fund the sewing machine purchase in Largo camp.

“I would like to congratulate all of you on the completion of your training. You deserve the certificates and sewing machines,” UNHCR’s Kenema sub-office head Ibrahima Coly said to loud cheers and applause. Coly encouraged the refugees to use their sewing machines to help them stitch together a new future and help others.

The majority of the group and their families have signed up to repatriate back to Liberia shortly, joining some 50,000 Liberian refugees from around West Africa who have now returned home since the official repatriation started. Back in Liberia, their sewing skills will be crucial to help them restart their lives.

“The future is now in your hands. Please make the best use of it. I would also like to appeal to you to kindly assist to train other refugees or returnees who were not privileged to get the machines. I wish you all good luck in your future career,” Coly told the happy graduates.

The main aim of the sewing project was to build the capacity of refugee nursing mothers, improving their nutritional status by giving them skills to generate income, says training programme coordinator Magdalene Dakowa of Catholic Relief Services. Another aim was for the sewing groups in each of the camps to produce 500 baby clothes for refugee children.

The initial six-month training project started in January 2004. The course was so successful that the trainees went on to produce children’s clothes for both refugees and host communities as a way of continuing their career development. During this period the women in Largo camp were contracted to produce school uniforms by one of UNHCR’s partners. The graduation ceremony marked the conclusion of their career training.

Funds for the project were also used to help 500 other refugee women improve their backyard gardening, again to help improve the nutritional status of the refugees.

At the graduation ceremony, five trainers of the project – three men and two women – also each received one machine. One of the trainers, Isata Koroma, came from the host community.

“The sewing machine that I have received will help me and my family,” said Isata. “I am a single mother. My husband was killed in the war in my country, Sierra Leone, and it has been really difficult for me to take care of our seven children. I am very grateful for this assistance.”

There are eight refugee camps in Sierra Leone hosting some 46,000 refugees, with most coming from Liberia’s most devastated Lofa County. With the positive changes taking place in Liberia UNHCR is now actively promoting voluntary repatriation for an estimated 160,000 Liberian refugees still outside their homeland. Some 46,000 Liberian refugees remain in camps in Sierra Leone with Largo camp hosting 5,300 refugees.

“As for Angelina, she is absolutely a world-class celebrity AND she’s made 20 visits as United Nations special ambassador to refugee camps around the world. She is informed, sincere and passionate about the subject. If interviewing her gave us an opportunity to shine a bright spotlight on a critical issue facing the world, then I’d like the chance for Anderson to interview her again.”

She is totally dysfunctional with her eating disorder.
In those pics, she looks worse off than the refugees. Get help and
