OlderAngelina Jolie Highlights Humanitarian Crisis
UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie listens to one elderly refugee’s story at the makeshift Al Waleed camp inside Iraq on Tuesday. This woman is just one of some 1,300 trapped unable to leave the country for neighboring Syria.
Angie has worked with UNHCR since early 2001. In May, a foundation set up by Angie and Brad Pitt, donated $1 million to help those affected by the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region and neighboring Chad.
UPDATE 1: The Huffington Post reports Angie gain flew commercial with no staff, as she did with Darfur last year. She is stealth! (Head bodyguard Mickey Brett did tag along, though.)
UPDATE 2: OK! Magazine just updated their site with Angelina posting with Lance Corporal Samuel Petersen, 22, of the US Marine Corps.

If caring people with fame don’t speak out on issues, the masses would have no exposure to what is happening in our world. It’s easier to ignore it. You can’t rely on politicians. I think Jolie is a great woman who is doing her best to help. She deserves our support.
You knw the haters are getting tired. Same old things. Eating disorder, husband stealer, brad and she are breaking up, she doesn’t love her baby etc etc. They repeat the same things over and over on theses threads. They don’t even read the content of the positive responses because they have closed minds. Anige Love Her or Hate Her you cannot dispute that she has done more than most Hollywood stars to help others in this country and abroad. She is a good mothers and apparently a wonderful partner to Brad Pitt. So yes it may be hard to believe but believe it you must. Angelina and Brad are a unique couple and good for this country.
Jolie consistently gives 1/3 of her income to charity via the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. She knows her contrubuting is not enough, that is why she turns her spotlight onto the disadvantaged, so we can all help her to improve the situation. We have to help her out.
Yes, she could help the homeless in NYC, but why don’t you make that your lifes work. She has done her share.
She choose to support UNHCR in 2001 and she is not forgetting the promises she made to the refugees she met then. She continues her works.

She will always have a photographer with her on her trips for the UNHCR.
Pictures are part of her press releases after a trip. It’s part of the job. I think the refugee agency arranges that.It’s possible the local office of the agency has a photographer waiting.

Angelina has also contributed to Brad’s life. Most important thing she did for him was to bear his child! She has shown him the world away from Hollywood. She has had a good influence on him.
He used to be a pretty boy (Ken), leading a self-absorbed, shallow Hollywood life. In the interview he gave in France, he himself said he changed (for the better) since meeting her.

One person can only do so much and she is doing a lot already. Besides that (and this is the most important part) she is a UNHCR goodwill ambassador. The role of the UNHCR is to represent refugees overseas, NOT homeless people in NYC.

I was also thinking why her visit is so short? But two days are more than enough to make a point. She is really there to make a point. She could have spoken about refugees while in America, I am sure she has enough info from all the reporters from the field. But her presence in the area attracts much more attention. I have respect for her to even consider going into a war zone. And I have even more respect for the people that are working in the area on permanent basis.

Hollywood megastar Angelina Jolie indirectly criticized the Iraq war and the priorities of the US government, in an interview with CNN on World Refugee Day.
“When you’re in Washington to get money for AIDS orphans, the answer is often, we’re at war right now,” said the goodwill ambassador for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) who has visited refugee camps around the world.
“Our priorities are quite strange,” she said referring to the money Washington spends on war and not “dealing with situations that could end up in conflict if left unassisted, and then cost more.”
“We’re missing a lot of opportunities (to do) a lot of good that America used to do and has a history of doing … You have to start to notice that there’s something wrong with that,” she added.
Jolie, 31, spoke during her two-hour interview of her travels around the world and how on seeing young victims of atrocities a few years ago at a refugee camp in Sierra Leone it had changed her life.
“It was an amputee camp … the worst camp I’ve ever seen … It changed me for the better … Suddenly you see these people who’re really fighting something, who are really surviving, who have so much in pain and loss … and you just feel like your own life just has been so sheltered and so spoiled… it just changed everything.”
She defended the United Nations from criticism: “We certainly hear a lot about the negative things about the UN, you don’t hear about the number of people who are kept alive on a daily basis by the UN.
“It’s the closest thing we’ve got to a real international institution that represents us and can make certain kind of decisions. There’s just a lot that people don’t know about the UN and what it does.”
Jolie, who avoided speaking of her personal life in the interview, said she got a “ridiculous” salary for her acting job, but revealed she donated a third of what she makes to humanitarian causes.
