Venice Film Fest 2007 (Competition)–Inventive in narrative structure, contemplative in tone, evocative of the Old West, and significant as a retelling of a mythic saga with a fresh, contemporary perspective, Andrew Dominik’s “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” is nothing short of brilliant.

Alongside with Joel and Ethan Coen’s “No Country for Old Men,” which is a Western in disguise, or rather a modern Western, “Assassination of Jesse James” is the second masterpiece of the season, one that immediately positions itself as a major revisionist work about he legendary criminal Jess James, as well as a resonant deconstruction of the roots of one of the most persistent issues in American history and culture: The complex link between crime and fame, and the obsession with celebrity. For those who think that these are new problems that define and plague our culture, the movie serves as a useful reminder that they have been around for over a century.

On another level, it’s hard to think of a director in recent times who has made such a huge leap to the major league of filmmaking as Aussie Andrew Dominik, who previously made the rather small but well-executed “Chopper,” based on the life story of the notorious Australian criminal Chopper Read. Playing the global festival circuit, “Chopper” was a film that many critics (including myself) admired but few saw, due to its subject matter, national origins, and limited theatrical distribution.

“Assassination of Jesse James” world premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival, which kicks off August 29, before going to Toronto Film Fest and opening wide later next month.

At the risk of overselling the film, since my review is written right after watching it, my first impression is that Dominik has made a poignant modernist Western that ranks with Arthur Penn’s achievement in “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), Same Peckinpah’s grand, eloquent Westerns (specifically “The Wild Bunch,” and “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid”) and Robert Altman’s “McCable and Mrs. Miller”. “Assassination of Jess James” should place Dominik in the forefront of Hollywood’s new, bright and visionary filmmakers.

What’s amazing about Dominik’s film, which he also wrote, is that it’s not violent at all, not by standards of Westerns films of the 1970s, and certainly not by standards of today’s actioners. Instead, he made the very shrewd decisions to offer a new angle on the mythic saga of a criminal like Jesse James and to follow his central characters and their entourage well after James’ notorious death.

Basically, “Assassination of Jess James” is a study of jealousy, obsession and revenge, centering on legendary hero’s nemesis outlaw, Robert Ford (Casey Affleck, in a career defining performance), and his deadly, both destructive and self-destructive preoccupation with America’s most notorious figure at the time.

Early on, the film, which has had a long, troubled history, was billed as a Brad Pitt vehicle, due to the fact that he’s also the producer (See Essay). However, though Jesse James is the feature’s nominal hero, the central figure is decidedly Bob Ford, since most of the personal and historical events are seen and depicted from his subjective POV.

The other innovative device chosen by Dominik is to have an extensive voice-over narration (by Hugh Ross), which links events and also comments on the characters and their actions. As a framing device, the narration offers another layer of storytelling, one that turns the saga into a more evocative film, sort of a ballad, though it may create problems for viewers who favor direct, emotional involvement with a film’s characters.

Based on the novel of the same title by Ron Hansen, “Assassination of Jesse James” delves into the public and private lives of America’s most notorious outlaw and his unlikely assassin, the coward Robert Ford, by focusing in great character and historical detail to the last year of Jesse James before his infamous shooting.

Most of the saga is set in 1881, when Jesse James was 34 and his killer Bob Ford was 19. As he plans his next great robbery, Jesse continues to wage war on his enemies, a wild and diverse bunch, all trying to collect the huge reward money and, more importantly, the promised glory that will comes with his capture.

But the film is not about plot in the conventional sense of the term, even if many significant events take place in 1881-1882. As writer and helmer, Dominik knows that there have been countless books, plays, and tales about America’s “first bonafide celebrity.” As colorful and fascinating they might have been, most of those yarns, including previous Hollywood films (see Essay, emphasized Jesse’s larger-than-life public persona and daring exploits.

Like “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Assassination of Jess James” shows that Jesse James as the object of owe and admiration—even to those that he robbed and terrorized and the families of those he admittedly killed. The sensational newspaper and dime novels, that chronicled the Jesse James Gang at its height, during the 1870s, made sure that Jesse was never “just a criminal” who deserved to be captured and executed.

In other words, the thirst for sensationalistic tales and obsession with celebrities, both legit and illegit, which define our culture today, go back to at least a century ago, right after the Civil War. This is one modernist touch that elevates Dominik’s film way above the norm of a well-told, well-crafted Western.

In many ways, “Assassination of Jesse James” is not a Western at all, since in its epic scale (and epic running time of 161 minutes), poetic tone, and visual beauty, it’s an evocative film that speaks to our times in a more relevant way than most stories set at the present.

Who was Jesse James? Dominik doesn’t pretend or claim that he understands him. Instead, he keeps his central figure as a mystery, an enigma, to the very end. He suggests that to some Jesse was a Robin Hood type, targeting banks and railroad owners that exploited poor farmers. To others, Jesse was a man with a tragic cause, a wronged and wounded Confederate solider striking back against the Union that had ruined his life. And there were those who saw him as the last frontiersman, a symbol of freedom and the American spirit, a charismatic rebel who flouted the law and lived by his rules, by his own code of ethics.

Who was his killer? According to the film Robert Ford was first and foremost an admirer, a man full of contradictions. As youth, he was an idealistic and ambitious lad who had devoted his adolescent years to the hope of riding one day alongside his idol. He could never imagined, as become clear and sad in the film’s last reel, that history would ultimately mark him and stigmatized him as “the dirty little coward,” who didn’t have to balls to engage in a direct shootout and finally shot Jesse in the back.

Most of the tale, though, is a detailed chronicle of how Ford became a member of Jesse’s inner circle, which ultimately enabled him to bring down a formidable figure that numerous lawmen across a dozen states had tried and failed? The movie is about the evolution of friendship and camaraderie, ho Ford and his brother (Sam Rockwell) come to be friends of Jesse and what happened among this trio in the last days and hours leading up to the gunshot that would end one man’s life and become the definition and sum total of another’s.

Just in case you thought this is a story of three amigos, Dominik enriches the saga by introducing at least a down fully developed characters, Jesse’s wife (Mary Louise Parker) and children, his larger family, and entourage of mostly male buddies.

The brilliant Oscar-nominated lenser Roger Deakins shot the movie in Canada’s Calgary and Winnipeg, where Clint Eastwood also filmed some of his Westerns. Deakins is an expert of capturing the unique beauty of remote wintry sites, as was evident in the Coen brothers’ Oscar-winning “Fargo” and the upcoming “No Country for Old Men,” which is very much a Western, albeit set in modern times.

It’s a pleasure to report that, for a change, judging by the end result, the rumors of Domink’s troubled production are just rumors–or else, they corrected the picture’s problems whatever they were. And while “Assassination of Jesse James” is an art film in the positive sense of the term, it’s also, as of today, one of the best films of the year.

Why the calls for botox? Aging is a natural process, it happens to all, everyone must learn to deal with it in their own way. Botox does not stop aging, plastic surgery does not stop aging. Tanning and smoking, especially in women, speed up the aging process.

Brad squints a lot in sunlight and when many camera flashes are going off in his face. I think he had lasik eye surgery and that makes one’s eyes very sensitive to light.

Pitt’s latest film is a Western depicting the last year in the life of the famous outlaw. Ben Affleck’s younger brother, Casey, plays fellow gang member Robert Ford.

His relationship with Jolie was recently rumoured to be in trouble. But the Tomb Raider actress has accompanied him to the Venice Film Festival, with children in tow.

Pitt is promoting his new film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

The 43-year-old actor is the biggest draw of the festival, arriving to huge cheers from the crowds.

But he proved less popular with the assembled photographers when he refused to take his sunglasses off to have his picture taken. The snappers booed him and accused him of being vain before walking out in protest.

Pitt’s latest film is a Western depicting the last year in the life of the famous outlaw. Ben Affleck’s younger brother, Casey, plays fellow gang member Robert Ford.

well, we all know whe he REFUSED to take his glasses off. the lil train tracks under his eyes .

I don’t think that is it. He took of his sunglasses in NO. Also he knew he could not keep them on at the news conference and there the pictures would be even closer. So everyone has seen the lines. I thnk it has to do with his eye squiting because of his eye sensitivity. If you look at the pictures from him at the trailer for Burn he is squinting as he looks toward the sunlight.

So, I see the Jolie-Pitt clan is in Venice - one of my favorite city in Italy (except that I cannot stand the water taxi - it makes me dizzy all the time)….Anyway, they all look tired - but still beautiful and together. The weather is always nice at this time of the year - about 70 degrees, but cool due to the breeze in the lagoon - that’s probably why the Jolie-Pitt girls are wearing some sort of coat (all fashionable in white). Of course, you got to give it to the Jolie-Pitt girls to look classy and stylish - why not, after all, it is Venice!…..

Brad is looking very handsome on this photocall pictures….- he looks relax and refreshed from the long flight….

I hope tomorrow’s red carpet of Brad’s film is going to be another stunning event for Mom and Papa Pitt….looking forward to see that….

Does any1 have the transcript for the press conference?

I’m not perfect, so I am not going to judge their relationship. Truthfully, I don’t know if they are happy or unhappy. I don’t think anyone can really comment on this with any knowledge, only those two know what is really going on. I hope, they remain faithful to each other and the children are raised to be happy healthy adults.

With that said, I really wish they would dress the kids a little more lively (can’t think of another word) The girls are always wearing some sort of white top with grey,beige,brown pants. The boys are always wearing some of those same colors with black tops. I don’t exactly want them to wear screaming bright colors, but a little more variety in clothing colors would be nice.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Just for the record, I don’t dislike them as a couple. I’m just not enamored by them, I only wish them the best. They are interesting as a family.

Brad, Angelina to join Venice festival
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are expected at the Venice Film Festival.

Pitt is attending the world premiere of his new western, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.

He stars as the 19th century outlaw and Ben Affleck’s younger brother Casey plays the ambitious recruit to James’s posse.

The film is in competition for the Golden Lion prize for best picture.

Jolie has just returned from a mercy mission to Iraq, where she visited a refugee camp in the western al-Anbar province in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

Other stars scheduled to appear at the festival include Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell.

They appear together in Cassandra’s Dream, the latest movie from director Woody Allen, which is showing out of competition.

McGregor and Farrell play troubled brothers who are drawn into crime by a young woman (Hayley Attwell).

This is Allen’s third London-set film after Scoop and Match Point.

Director Ridley Scott lashed out today at technology which allows people to watch films on mobile phones and computer screens, arguing it was killing cinema.

Great films should be watched on a big screen in a movie theatre, he said.

Brad Pitt Talks Fatherhood

After flying off to Italy for the Venice Film Festival a few days ago, Brad Pitt finally took to the red carpet for a photocall for his latest work, The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.
With the world premiere of his Western flick taking place later today (September 2), Brad took a little time to talk about something other than movies… his experiences in fatherhood.

The Fight Club stud spoke of his daddy duties, professing, “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had, I’ve ever experienced. I love it and can’t recommend it any more highly – although sleep is non-existent.”

Pitt, who was accompanied by wife Angelina Jolie to Venice (although she didn’t attend the photocall), continued, “It makes me much more efficient because when I work I really have to focus, I know I’ve less time to get things done. Actually I’m quite pleased by it.”

And while the 43-year old actor was clearly the biggest draw of the festival thus far, arriving to deafening screams from the crowds, he did have a bad experience with the photographers on hand.

Reservation Road: One of several vigilante movies of the fall, this one concerns the death of a child in a hit-and-run accident. The all-star cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Connelly and Mira Sorvino. An Oscar campaign will ensue.

Best reasons to root for the Canadian film industry:

L’Age Des Tenebres: This social satire from Denys Arcand - the closing-night movie at the Cannes film festival - is about a Quebec civil servant whose fantasy life makes him a great lover and bold knight.

Eastern Promises: David Cronenberg’s new movie stars Viggo Mortensen as a Russian gangster in London and Naomi Watts as a nurse investigating the death of a teenage prostitute.

Emotional Arithmetic: The festival’s closing-night movie, directed by Paolo Barzman, is the story of three friends who survived an interment camp during the Second World War. It stars Susan Sarandon, Gabriel Byrne, Max Von Sydow and Christopher Plummer.

Fugitive Pieces: The festival’s opening-night movie, directed by Jeremy Podeswa, is based on the Anne Michaels bestseller about a man haunted by his childhood in wartime Poland.

Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams have split after three years together, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

“It was rocky for awhile,” says a source close to the couple. “They did what they could to make it work.”

The source says the split was amicable.

The pair, who welcomed daughter Matilda in October 2005, met while they were filming Brokeback Mountain in 2004.

Costars say the chemistry was obvious from the start. “I remember being in rehearsal, and the two of them had googly eyes with each other,” costar Jake Gyllenhaal said of the couple. “There were sparks immediately,” added costar Anne Hathaway. “It was adorable.”

The Brooklyn-based duo welcomed their daughter during promotion for the film, with Ledger calling the former Dawson’s Creek star the perfect mom.

Pitt and Jolie ready for fifth child 9 minutes ago

VENICE, Italy - Brad Pitt and his partner Angelina Jolie are ready for another child, the actor said Sunday as he was promoting his new film.

Pitt and Jolie, with children in tow, were in Venice to talk about his film on Western outlaw Jesse James. The movie is competing for the top Golden Lion award at the city’s film festival.

Pitt and Jolie already have four children including a 15-month-old girl, Shiloh, born to the couple. Jolie has also adopted three children close in age from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.

Asked by Italian state TV whether they were ready for a fifth, Pitt replied: “Yeah we’re ready.”

He did not indicate whether they planned another biological child or if they would adopt.

Earlier on Sunday, Pitt told a news conference fatherhood was fun and good for his work, though he’s not getting much sleep.

“It’s the most fun I’ve ever had and also the biggest pain … I’ve ever experienced,” he said when asked what it was like to become a family with four children in a short space of time. “I love it and can’t recommend it any more highly — although sleep is nonexistent.”

Having four small children “makes me much more efficient because when I work, I really have to focus. I know I’ve less time to get things done. Actually, I’m quite pleased by it,” said Pitt.

“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” stars Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Shepherd, and was directed by Andrew Dominik. Pitt described it as “more a gangster film than a Western.”

Pitt plays James in the last year of his life as he lapses into paranoia over potential betrayal by accomplices and intimates.
