VENICE, Italy (AFP) — A jury made up entirely of film directors was set Saturday to crown the winners of the 64th Venice film festival, with 23 movies in the running for the coveted Golden Lion.

The festival, which marked its 75th anniversary this year, had a bumper crop of nine English-language films, including Hollywood vehicles for George Clooney (”Michael Clayton”) and Brad Pitt (”The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”).

But the French film “La Graine et le Mulet” (Grain of Life) by Tunisian-born director Abdellatif Kechiche was out in front in the estimation of Italian critics, while Tom Hayne’s kaleidoscopic biopic of Bob Dylan, “I’m Not There,” has also been well received.

Also in the running for best film is the hard-hitting US dramatisation “Redacted” by Brian De Palma of the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl by US soldiers.

Already on Friday, “Redacted” won the Future Film Festival Digital Award, attributed to the film that makes the best use of animation or visual effects.

“Grain of Life” is a detailed portrait of the life of a Tunisian immigrant family in France, centred on a grandfather’s dream of opening a couscous restaurant on a boat.

Australian actress Cate Blanchett, whose character most closely resembles Dylan at the height of his stardom, and Britain’s Kierston Wareing, who plays a gritty single mother-***-entrepreneur in Ken Loach’s “It’s a Free World,” are being mooted as candidates for best actress.

France’s Hafsia Herzi in “Grain of Life” and Tang Wei of China, who stars in Ang Lee’s erotic spy thriller “Lust, Caution,” are also in with a chance.

As for the men, both Michael Caine and Jude Law turned in prizeworthy performances in Kenneth Branagh’s “Sleuth.”

The Venice jury is headed by China’s Zhang Yimou and includes Jane Campion of New Zealand, Italy’s Roberto Perpignani and the American Frederick Wiseman.

Also Saturday, Italian cinema legend Bernardo Bertolucci will receive a special 75th anniversary Golden Lion.

“His movies are at once a declaration of love for the cinema and a manifesto of future utopias, the ones which will be reborn from those of the past,” festival director Marco Mueller said of Bertolucci, 67.

Meanwhile, the festival’s first ***** Golden Lion for a film with a gay or trans-gender theme was awarded Friday to the out-of-competition film “Speed of Life” by Ed Radtke, while “Sleuth” won a special mention in the category.

“Speed of Life” is about a down-and-out New York youth who steals videocameras with revealing home videos, and “Sleuth” briefly presents Caine and Law in a dare-driven homoerotic situation.

Friday also saw a documentary portrait by Jonathan Demme of former US president Jimmy Carter tracking his book tour for “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid,” which unleashed a storm of controversy in the United States.

On Friday, Italian schoolchildren awarded the Golden Lion Cub to quirky US director Wes Anderson’s comedy “The Darjeeling Limited,” a voyage of self-discovery for a trio of brothers in India.

They cited the film for “facing complex themes such as family relations with originality, lightness and irony.” The students at Venice’s Agiscuola have correctly picked the winner of the Golden Lion seven times.

On the subject of the US films shown here, Mueller told AFP: “The very original, innovative films that we have shown contradict the widespread image of a monolithic American cinema centred on lazy blockbusters. It’s a nice contribution to cultural diversity to see the dominating machine of American cinema contradicted by these new trends.”
