One man who has some explaining to do: Criss Angel. Did the magic man infuse any magic into Britney’s comeback performance at the VMAs? (If you missed it, watch Britney’s VMAs performance here).
Even the Associated Press rips into Brit’s performance:

An out-of-shape, out-of-touch Britney Spears delivered what was destined to be the most talked about performance of the MTV Video Music Awards — but for all the wrong reasons. Kicking off the show Sunday night with her new single, “Gimme More,” Spears looked bleary and unprepared — much like her recent tabloid exploits on the streets of Los Angeles.
She lazily walked through her dance moves with little enthusiasm. It appeared she had forgotten the entire art of lip-synching; and, perhaps most unforgivable given her once taut frame, she looked embarrassingly out of shape.
Even the celebrity-studded audience seemed bewildered. 50 Cent looked at Spears with a confused expression; Diddy, her new best friend, was expressionless.

what happened to chris angel. i waited for nothing.. i was so disappointed in britney’s performance because i expected something huge and she did not deliver that at all. the dance moves were very mundane and boring and she seemed as if she didnt even want to lipsinc her own song? what happened????

If that’s not a cry for help from someone in trouble, I don’t know what is. Wish her all the best. I think she’s lost and doesn’t know how to stop the craziness that’s become her life and doesn’t know who to turn to or what to turn to.
I literally cringed.
But as much as I enjoy a good celeb trainwreck, I feel bad for Brit. It’s a shame this “comeback” went so horribly bad but, well, at least she made an attempt… I guess?

Britney’s not exactly blameless for her tabloid woes. What was she doing all this weekend? Partying! If she needs space well then she should stay out of the spotlight for a while and not show up at every party in Vegas this weekend.

People- I think we have to remember that she used to perform in front of THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS when she was a brand new artist. I am assuming she was quite nervous then but would kill it nonetheless. This performance had NO excuse.

for someone who hasn’t performed in years, she did the best that she can. you looked so uncomfortable, but she did good. she’s better than all of us. look at what she’s been through and she still put aside her insecurities and gave us a performance.
I want to sympathize with Britney, but any true professional would not let nerves get in the way of a performance. She has had far too many chances to earn back the public’s respect and has messed up every single time.
I think we all saw the real winner tonight: Chris Brown. Not everyone could pull off a high-concept medley piece with a surprise guest star, but Chris blew us all away. Welcome, kid.

She was scared shitless and with all that crap in her life…she still went out there and performed. Have some compassion people! She is a human being who has lost a lot and could use some encouragement.
i’m convinced more than ever now that a worthy comeback will never come.
Poor Brit. She was obviously not ready for the “come back”… she really looked scared.
It was sad all the choices, specially the hair extensions… gosh.

Wow-where to start. Ok, here is the main problem as I see it; when you’re entire carreer is based essentially on using your body to distract people from the fact that you can’t sing, and when you show up looking the way BS did, and you are still somehow trying to convince people that you can sing, or at least perform, you have a real situation.
To be fair, I thought BS’ makeup looked beautiful-I can see that for once, she had professionals, and not her “friends” do her makeup. Unfortunately, that is the only nice thing I can say about the whole performance and the fact that we have to ananlyze her her makeup underscores the sad reality that singing is just not this singer’s forte-never a good sign when you’re basing your carreer as one.
As for the rest, I imagine everyone witnessed what I did (out of principal, I refuse to watch the VMAs) on the Net. I thought BS looked very uncomfortable-scared even. And, she kept grabbing her hair, as of terrified that her weave would come flying off. It was all very distracting, as you could practically see the wheels of her little brain straining and straining to multitask without leaving anything out-”remember words, remember dance steps, don’t trip, and hold on to weave!!”
Unfortunately for Miss B., save for managing to successfully guard her weave from landing in the audience, she managed to accomplish none of the tasks on aforementioned mental “to do” list. The dancing, if you could call it that, consisted of her usual prancing around while waving her arms (as if lots of arm-waving constitutes dance skill), with the protective camouflage, of course, from the requisite slew of writhing dancers. More diastraction, I suppose.
The saddest part, I suppose, is that BS couldn’t even lip-synch correctly! This is the kiss of death for a singer who cannot sing.
That bikini- well, ok-isn’t Britney a little ummm…wide…to be parading around like that? I thought she looked like a stuffed sausage in that thing. It’s not that she’s a complete lardass-she’s fine for a middle class housewife in suburbia that has popped out two kids-but for a gal trying to convince us that her fab bod somehow equates with vocal talent? Uhhh, sorry, but in a word? NO.
Sorry to sound so negative, but I think it is time for Britney to quit her day job and stay home with her kids.

It was not really that bad. For someone who has not performed in years, it was actually pretty decent. Britney Spears is not ready yet to comeback. Until all her life issues are resolved. Anyone in her shoes right now will be MORE of a train wreck than how we see her handle herself. Good job, Britney. We sure miss the OLD BRITNEY the PERFORMER but we still have high hopes that OLD B will comeback. Fierce and stronger.

rumor has it that criss totally dissed her Sun morning. The MTV exec’s still wanted her to perform. They had to change the set compltely to do away with criss’s mirror tricks or something. First of all, her performance wasn’t bad at all. Britney hasn’t perform in a long time in front of a huge live audience, so one can understand why she might be nervous. I thought she did a good job with the choreography but she did not show a lot of enthusiasm for the performance. A lot of people here say she might be scare or nervous, and I totally agree. Britney has been blast for everything so to see her come out and do a show like the VMAs take a lot of courage. I’m proud of her!

I feel for her. Everyone that tries to help her she pushes away. For whatever her reasons right now she doesn’t want to hear the truth and doesn’t surround herself with people that really care about her - and if they do care they are not permitted to say anything to help because they know they will be out the door in a flash. But give the girl credit - she is really trying. The late night partying needs to take a back burner though. It was difficult to watch the performance. No enthousiam, and no pride left at all. I wonder why she set herself up for failure. I do not understand her at all. She use to have better creative judgement, and energy. If she had nailed the lip singing and had been more explosive and energetic with the dance choreography, it could have been amazing.
I found Chris Brown’s performance energetic, but he lip sang too. So I felt I was watching a very good “so you think you can dance” number. I can’t wait to watch another performance.
As for Brit…Justin perhaps was trying to ligthen the pressure by saying that he too felt he was getting old…
I will refrain from saying mean things because I feel sorry for her eventhough I am not a fan.
That said, I agree with those who can see that this is a girl whose camp let her become superfamous on lack of talent, no skinging skills and actually no dancing skills.
Now that she is older and not into the little doll image, there is nothing left. Britney was never a good singer - nor was she ever a good dancer - she just learned dance moves.
She is hurting right now and her performance is a result of it. I hope someone takes care of her and holds her and loves her. She needs that. At least for her kids, I hope she will be ok.

The reason Criss Angel didn’t perform with her is because “insurance reasons” illuminated.com said that MTV turned them away @ the last minute. She also found out about the comments made about her kids from comedian Sarah Silverman right before she took the stage… they said she was PISSED.

I feel sorry for Kayne West and some of the other performers who really deserved to do the opening number. What was she thinking?????? What was her management or the entourage around her thinking?? She looked like a stoned robot — danced and lip synced like she didn’t even know where she was. What a disaster for her–why didn’t she take Justin Timberlake’s offer and make a come back single with him???
Brit sucked big time. No excuses needed. She is a performer and this was her moment to shine. Greater artists than Britney have put aside personal problems and gave the performance of a lifetime. Britney is her own enemy, not the paps or the tabs. She had the spotlight and blew it. Criss Angel, if he was helping her with her act, should have spent more time on the act and not Britney herself. He should have made the entire performance disappear. I am still rooting for Brit, she is one of my favorite trainwrecks.
Sarah Silverman totally make an appropriate joke regarding Britney’s children, calling them a “mistake.” That was totally uncalled for. Britney’s performance wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the best. Give her time and practice, and she’ll be 100% better.
Yily, Britney’s performance was VERY BAD, everyone needs to place the blame on one person and that’s Britney. She’s 25 years old, a mother of 2 and a show business veteran. She parties all night but can’t do a 2 minute performance with no singing and very little dancing, come on. People have got to stop giving her chance after chance and make her get some help away from LA.
I raise my son to be accountable for his actions; it’s obvious that her mother did not. Just 2 weeks ago she was given $100,000 to show up at an opening in Vegas and she showed up 2 hours late and stayed 15 minutes. She was forced to walk the red carpet for a few minutes and then she took off. She is an insult to all the talented people in this country.
SAD to see she needs to get help but I don’t think the high heel boots helped.
I’m sorry, but there are no excuses for her performance. She is supposed to be a professional, and a professional will do what they do, and do it well, no matter what the circumstances. The girl makes $700K a month, so “it was her first time on stage in a long time” or “Sarah Silverman was going to make fun of her kids” (which she didn’t, she made fun of the headline talking about Brit’s kids), isn’t going to cut it.
I also don’t buy that the hotel scrapped the performance at the last minute. They would have known about it far in advance and there is no way MTV would have replaced something that was supposed to be awesome with that shitastic (but clearly rehearsed) performance.
I think MTV got what they paid for in having Britney open the show - ratings. They didn’t care about her, if its true that they wouldn’t let the original show planned with Chris Angell go on and if MTV really cared about Britney they would have made some modifications instead of sending her out to the wolves. Instead, they were contributing to her downfall all for the sake of their ratings, they knew people would tune in to watch, unfortunately I’m sure most people tuned out after the awkward start between Britney and Sarah.
I think what someone said is true - if Britney would have killed it with her performance it would have been mighty hard for Sarah to come out afterwards and say what she said. Britneys performance made it that much more easier for Sarah to trash her. I agree saying her kids were mistakes was wrong and I didn’t find anything she said funny - no one was laughing, so why bring her back again. And regardless of what Sarah was going to say or not say - the show must still go on and Britney should have just risen above it, but she is not in a mental state to do that.
I think we all knew that Britney wouldn’t be any good. It was obvious that Justin was steering clear of the floor and staying in his suite because he didn’t want any camera shots panning over to him for reaction when she was up there tanking.
She obviously needs serious help, but she’s so sick and has so much money that she doesn’t have to be dependent upon anyone and there are too many people out there willing and ready to enable her to be on her mealticket. It’s really sad what has become of her. After she split with Justin her life just went completely downhill and out of control. I think Justin kept her real, and after that she was so lonely that she just got sucked into all the hype. That was how she got the attention and affection she needed. She basically bought K-Fed’s affections and even he kept her somewhat sane and grounded. Now she’s free falling on her own, her poor babies. They are too young now to know what is going on, but one day they are going to be able to look her in the eye and tell her what they think and feel. Hopefully it won’t be too late before that time comes. Her manager should get her into hiding and rehab and just make her go away for a good long time.
For those who care, take a stoll down memory lane to see how far Britney has fallen in just a few short years time. Poor girl.

I agree with what one of the stars said. They said she was holding back and really nervous because of the hype and all the negativity surronding her. If nobody believes in you how can you perform at your best?
I think Britney tried and for that I applaud her greatly. I think with a little more practice she is going to be great! The media is just toooo judgemental and build people up just so we can watch them fail. To say she was horrible and shouldn’t have performed went over the line. I also thought that Sarah Silverman’s monologue was not funny at all.
