Ja Rule to MTV: Stop Promoting the Gays
Kanye West isn’t the only one hating on MTV.
Rapper Ja Rule recently made a please to MTV to stop promoting homosexuality in a recent issue of Complex magazine:
“We need to go step to Paramount, and ****ing MGM, and all of these other mother****ers that’s making all of these movies.
“We need to go step to MTV and Viacom, and lets talk about all these ****ing shows that they have on MTV that is promoting homosexuality, that my kids can’t watch this ****.
“Dating shows that’s showing two guys or two girls in mid-afternoon. Let’s talk about **** like that! If that’s not ****ing up America, I don’t know what is.”

If his children are gay or Lesbian it would be good for them to see that other people are gay and Lesbian, to have some role models, so that they don’t feel isolated or like they are the only people in the world. While nearly all heterosexual parents would prefer their children to be straight, Gay men and lesbians are born mostly to straight parents. He seems to intend to make them feel as bad about themselves as possible. As if life isn’t tough enough already for most people. Dissaproval and stigmatising gay and lesbian people affects their physical and mental health, it is unacceptable.
Homosexuality is part of the normal range of sexual orientation and desire. People do not choose their sexuality and it is not going to go away. Treating gay men and Lesbians badly because of their sexual orientation and expression of it is just like treating people badly because they are black or have a congenital disability.

I asked, “why are you watching this episode?” .. only to find out some upsetting news. MTV is playing extremely inappropriate things, especially during the day time.

First of all — let’s hope he doesn’t just sit his kids in front of the TV . The dating shows in general are not suitable for little kids. Don’t know his kids ages, but actually most of what MTV has on isn’t for the little ones. But for teens it’s okay, not for little kids. But if he doesn’t want them to watch it — there’s stuff like parental locks, v chips or God forbid sitting down and watching TV with his kids and he can click the remote to another channel.
I for one am very proud of MTV for including gays in those dating shows. I think it shows we’ve come a long way. And I hope it does influence those teens that even if someone is gay — they are normal people.

Actually, I agree with Candy’s point about the moral content of daytime television. However, I beleive that JaRule used this position as a diversion to express his homophopia. Networks and programers certainly have a responsibility to viewers in regards to the positioning of their shows snd I believe that parents should be monitoring what their kids watch on television, but singaling out homosexuality only demonstrates what he’s really bothered about. I am not American but Australian so I do not know alot about your democratic system but I think it is fair to say that people will always vote for the policies that affect them directly. Sadly, a voter’s prefered political party may have a strong econimic policy but may be backward in their thinking towards social reform so therefore, their vote is skewed towards this party because of thier own personal circumstances which might concern family, job security etc etc. Unfortunately, some minority groups miss out because of this. In this case, I think you make a good point that those who really care about social reform can demonstrate this by lobbying their govenment and remaining proactive.

The reason I brought up the choice issue is to argue against those who say that they don’t want their children to be exposed to same-sex couples on TV (for fear that it will “turn them gay”). My point is that if your child is straight, seeing a gay couple will not turn them towards the same gender.

The difference is that in the US, the Republican party has used the issue of gay rights for political purposes. In the 2004 election, a number of states had ballot initiatives defining marriage as between a man and a woman. This was designed to get more voters to come out than usual and to vote for President Bush. In other words, the stakes were risen for social conservatives and more than usual turned out to ensure the amendments passed.

Thanks Mary. I did not know that. In Australia, it’s compulsory to vote once you turn 18 and you are a citizen of the country. It is actually illegal NOT to vote and you face fines by not doing so. Our current govenment is still quite conservative towards issues concerning homosexuality. Dispite being part of the Commonwealth, our Prime Minister seems to favour the policies of your President rather than take the lead from his former Commonwealth counterpart, Tonly Blair who legalised gay marriage recently.

My brother is a White Gay male (who has had his share of Black boyfriends) and he and I agree on the point I am about to make:
The constitution will NEVER allow for the legalization of discrimination against blacks ever again. Blacks have too much protest power for that to ever happen. It will never happen. Sorry to disappoint you.
However, homosexuality is the great society equalizer: MOST people have made it clear they will not accept it. It is too embedded in people’s religious beliefs. Every religion and society protests against it.
There are no religions who truly have a doctrine that preaches against Blacks - but priests, reverends, even the Pope has made it clear they are hands down against Gay culture, That is why the Catholic church will not allow them to march in parades.
That is why most religions speak against it. I am not agreeing with this but I am simply answering to your “no blacks on TV

How can some of you say that he actually has a point? How is showing that some people are homosexual, and that it’s okay to be homosexual, bad for children? If your child was born homosexual, and you made it seem like it was a bad thing, what if that child killed him or herself, as many many many many gay teens do?

@kfed: That makes just about as much sense as “I don’t want Straight shows influencing my kids to be straight.” You are the way God made you. If you are heterosexual, you are born that way, if you are homosexual, you are born that way. The television will raise children only when the parent(s) don’t. When will society understand the simple concept that we are all human beings.
We have had major issues with Religious Affiliation, Gender & Race. Now we have issues with Sexual Orientation. Not saying that we solved the first three, just that we finally realized (mainstream society that is, some people still hold on to hate) that it was stupid to base a persons worth on these demographics. My does history repeat itself (bigotry and hate run a muck, if you don‘t fit the qualities we like, then you don‘t belong).
