I agree, your post made me laugh. Ha He’s bipolar. My take is that on a more personal level, Ted C has some deep unresolved issues. I think most of these bitter gossip bloggers have deep unresolved issues.

ABC: Us Weekly, OK! Relied on Verified Circ as Newsstands Waver

There are growing indications that the long-hot celebrity weekly category may be poised for a correction.

In July, American Media’s Star cut its rate base to 1.35 million, from 1.5 million. Now comes more evidence, via Us Weekly. In first-half 2007, the Wenner Media title’s paid and verified circ rose 4.8 percent to 1.9 million, beating its 1.85 million rate base by 1.6 percent. But verified copies were critical to delivering the guaranteed circ, and the weekly still missed rate base on nine of 26 issues, per its Audit Bureau of Circulations publisher’s statement.

Us averaged 98,669 verified, or free public-place copies, which accounted for 5.2 percent of total subscriptions, well within media buyers’ comfort level.

What is less comforting to some buyers is the plan to grow Us’ rate base 2.7 percent to 1.9 million next January. Robin Steinberg, senior vp, director of print investment at MediaVest, said celebrity titles are entering a new, challenging phase. “It’s definitely a sign that this category is peaking,” she said. “The big challenge is the online sites of TMZ and People that are grabbing readers’ attention.”

But Us publisher Vicci Lasdon Rose said a newsstand-dependent title is bound to miss rate base, pointing out that Us also overdelivered for 10 of its issues by an average of 10 percent. She said verified copies are key to growing audience, and that levels vary because they are distributed as part of multiple-week sampling programs. “Our advertisers pay for audience and they get audience, and they want increased levels of audience,” she said.

Also missing rate base: Northern & Shell’s OK! While total circ rose 54.3 percent to 809,411, it fell short of its 850,000 rate base in 21 of 25 issues. OK! averaged 71,815 verified copies, 8.9 percent of circ.

Publisher Tom Morrissy said the misses were expected after the title raised its cover price by $1 to $2.99 in January, but that circ has since improved with increased distribution. Indeed, the title exceeded rate base for the 10 issues since the end of the first half, passing the 1 million mark for two issues, per ABC’s Rapid Report. (OK! is the only celeb weekly participating in the Rapid Report.) Morrissy said he plans to reduce OK!’s reliance on verified, which accounted for 8.9 percent of subs in first half.

Other weeklies reported circ declines. Star’s circ fell 3.7 percent to 1.5 million, missing rate base by 41,896. Circ for Time Inc.’s People’s fell 2.2 percent to 3.7 million but made rate base on every issue.

Bauer Publishing’s In Touch and Life & Style produced hefty gains of 10.2 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively. It remains to be seen if they will give up some of those gains when $1 price hikes kick in this fall. CEO Hubert Boehle has said he doesn’t expect newsstand to be impacted because other titles have raised their cover prices, including People and OK!

TedC is not a journalist at all. TedC is a gossipy person who makes up crap about celebs and who has a tiny little space on e! online that keeps getting smaller as others get more space. He is a bitter bitter nonentity and he knows it.
