OlderBrad Pitt is Hollywood’s Most Wanted Man
Brad Pitt was interviewed by USA Today at the Toronto Film Festival last week. His intense character study The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford opens in limited release Friday and netted him the best-actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
On relating to his character Jesse James: “I understand the essence of paranoia. I understand being hunted, to some degree. I understand a bounty on my head. But the movie is about so much more. The real tragedy is that there was a chance he could have gotten past this moment. He’s wrestling with himself and lost that battle.”
On the Jolie-Pitts being like the Jesse James clan, which quietly shuffled from home to home to evade authorities: It’s impossible for us. We’re run out of every major city. There’s just too many paparazzi. There’s always cameras in the kids’ faces, yelling their names. Angie gets out of the car, and they take the camera down to the curb and shoot up (her skirt). It’s unbelievable. [That's why] there’s a constant negotiation in how to survive and how to maintain a family life.”
On having honed his instincts: “You develop radar. Like I know when there’s someone in the bushes 300 yards away shooting,. I know to recognize that feeling. (On the Canadian set), there was a guy in total camouflage, who commandoed his way on knee and elbow. And I know that feeling. It’s inexplicable, one of those instincts.”

In 1983, author Ron Hansen crafted a novel that ought to be considered mandatory reading for anyone considering him or herself attracted to the western as a genre and as a conveyor of essential truth. A Shakespearean account of betrayal in the old west, Hansen’s broad sketches revealed deep and vibrant characters that transcended the nickel-book mythology into which they inevitably found themselves woven. Twenty-four years later, filmmaker Andrew Dominik has accomplished a visual telling of that story which is as close to cinematic perfection as you could hope to imagine. At the risk of sensationalism, I would call “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” the most accomplished work of moving imagery committed to film in nearly a decade. It is a staggering piece of true cinematic art.

Brad Pitt has never been better, giving a performance that internalizes more than it externalizes. James’s untold fire simmers behind Pitt’s baby blue eyes, but the actor manages to be as affecting in his affability as he is in his cerebral terrorization. The downward spiral of the movie is one of presentiment and suspicion, and Pitt’s conveyance of a dubious and physically sickened soul can be unsettling at times. It is the kind of portrayal that might be lost in the awards shuffle if it didn’t come from a marquee player, but if Warner Bros. wanted it bad enough, they could secure a defined slot for Pitt amongst the Best Actor hopefuls at season’s end. But that is the only awards talk I’ll afford. This film is beyond all of that, in my view.

Technically, “Jesse James” is a marvel. The art department detail from Patricia Norris (behind both set and costume design) is something to behold, and it marries itself considerably to Roger Deakins’s painterly cinematography. Some of the shots Deakins and Dominik have envisioned are immediately iconic. This is one of the most beautiful films of the year.
Aurally, the work exhibits an array of layers equally affecting. The sound of gunfire has a bombastic and genuine quality that recalls Kevin Costner’s realistic use of sound in “Open Range.” But a certain sense of terror, of actually being there, rests in the soundtrack of “Jesse James.” And the score, a beautiful violin construction from Bad Seeds member Warren Ellis, is divine in its simplicity. Bad Seeds front man Nick Cave pops up, by the way, belting the classic “The Ballad of Jesse James” in a saloon near the film’s end.
There is plenty to be said of what Andrew Dominik has accomplished, and for my part, I think I’ve said it. But while considering the opinions of others within a film review isn’t my usual course of action, I have to be clear that anyone considering this film “pretentious” just doesn’t have a clear understanding of what that word means. There isn’t a whiff of pretension on the effort. It is as straight-forward as they come, as simple and defined and considerate of the western genre’s applications as I’ve ever seen. Like Ang Lee’s equally maligned (in some quarters) “Lust, Caution,” Dominik’s film takes its time and marinates, but it never once dabbles or wanders in unnecessary territory.
This is assured and confident craftsmanship.

This is what SCARES me. After the debacle in Toronto of being surrounded in the car, the fanidiot grabing Brad’s neck in Venice(?)/Deuaville(sp) and now Brad’s revelation of the peeparazzi antics re: Angie, I am really concerned. I too believe that it is a huge joke that existing stalker laws cannot be enforced and laws enacted to protect celebrities. It is a feeding frenzy for heavens sake. I for one have NO DESIRE TO SEE A TRADEGY UNFOLD before something is done.
Remember the story out of Prague, about the Pisserazzi taking a shot through the window and capturing Angie giving the kids a bath??? Brad has a movie in the can, is working on one this minute and will start one in Nov, oh yeah and another being released on Friday. Angie has one movie in the can, will start one next month and has one opening in Nov and KFP in June 08. Oh yeah, the HAG has what, a bit part in some lousy rom-com… Karma sure is sweet :lol:

Love Brad and the interview. Fame does have a price and since they are already paying for it, I hope it at least translates into dollars at the box office. Then they’ll be able to help more people and be rewarded for their sacrifice.
Unlike some who wish they would disappear, many (like me) are not ready to give them up. I wish they would make at least 2, 3 or 4 movies a year between them so we could at least see them onscreen and the red carpet. They are good actors, not just pretty faces. I would enjoy a movie better if my favorite actors where starring in it. It makes it more interesting and memorable.
I love it that they are always getting offers to star in movies. They don’t have to accept every one but they should keep on making them so their fans aren’t deprived of their presence. Trolls would just have to accept that the JPs are here to stay.

Thanks for the new thread Just Jared. The interview was very informative. I wish BP, AJ and their adorable children all the best.
If JA fans put as much effort in supporting JA as they do in bashing BP and AJ, then maybe JA would be doing better in her career and her personal life. I am sure that she could use all the good vibes she can get. I guess in their own way they feel that they are supporting JA by constantly putting BP and particuarly AJ down.
I am amazed at the lengths people go through to smear and hate on BP and AJ. All because of a Hollywood divorce. It is truly a shame that JA’s fans cannot move on.
BP and AJ are doing some good things with their charitable work, their professional projects and raising their children. Their focus in helping others is truly admirable. AJ has been involved with her UN work and has shown great devotion to helping children throughout the world. All this bitter ranting and raving over a sitcom star who has contributed less than nothing to society is sad. I would rather be a fan of BP and AJ than to be stuck in a mindless pit of hate for a couple who are simply trying to live their lives.
A Mighty Heart is a powerful film and AJ gave an Oscar worthy performance. I am glad that I got a chance to see it. Jesse James is shaping up to be an American classic. Peace to all.
