Brad & Angelina @ ‘Jesse James’ Premiere
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pose for pictures at the U.S. premiere of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in New York City on Tuesday night.
Brad looked sleek in a black suit while Angie stayed classic in a black slip dress (she wore Jimmy Choo’s Sami in chocolate suede with patent detail).
MSNBC: A simple overview of the plot of Assassination of Jesse James can’t do justice to the film’s three-dimensional interpretation of its lead characters. Pitt — giving what is arguably his greatest performance — portrays Jesse not as an evil psychopath but as a hunted man, weighed down by the burden of living his double life.

I believe Jesse wanted to die. He was weary of his life. Remember he asked Charly if he had ever considered suicide while standing on the ice shooting bullets into it. He wanted to die, but couldn’t commit suicide because of who he was in his own mind, and what he was in others. Therefore he goaded R&CF into making them think he was going to kill them, which he might have. But he knewn they being the cowards they were he would have to help them kill him. Thus the taking off of the belt and placing it far away from where he was going. How did he see dust on that picture? I think I will go see it again on Tuesday. There are some things I need to see again. And I want to focus on the music. Peace.

There is some symbolism connected to his daughter dropping her shoe in the yard and his not picking it up. No one seems to understand what it means. But if you think about it they showed that shoe lying there a couple of times. It meant something to him. There are so many shadings in this movie. He might not win an Oscar, but he sure as hell needs to get nominated. Peace.

I think the shoe goes along with the expression ‘The last shoe is about to drop.’
And sorry, but I just don’t see Jesse as wanting to die. When he was with Charlie, he also said that when you get a glimpse of the other side, nothing can frighten you. That’s probably why he didn’t try to duck or disarm Bob. Yes, he was depressed but I seriously doubted that he wanted to die in the house where his wife and kids were. He went through great pains to shield his identity from his kids; why would he subject them to the brutal aftermath?

Piper, I’m incline to agree with you about Jessie not wanting to die. Although, all the arguments being said here that Jessie wanted Bob to kill him are all good points as well. However, I am not too convinced that Jessie really want to die at that time, especially at that particular day (we know that he was suffering from acute depression with suicidal tendencies, but not enough to allow himself to be killed that day.) People who commit suicide don’t act on spur of the moment - it’s always planned ahead of time - yet, there were no indication (by verbal, action or narrated) that he plans to do it.
I still think, that he was testing Bob and his brother’s loyalty knowing that he was running out of time (being captured). It seems to be that Jessie was so desperate for protection for not being captured, so, he took the chance and did the unthinkable - testing the loyalty of Bob - not knowing how good Bob was with guns….But hey, I could be totally wrong…..
Also, one of the reasons why I am not so sure about Jessie’s allowing Bob to kill him was that the narrator did not imply that Jessie had allowed Bob to kill him (I can’t recall the narrator implying anything Jessie wants to be killed by Bob). The narrator of the movie was very instrumental in knowing and understanding Jessie’s psyche. Also, the narrator was very specific in trying to tell the audience things that were not said or implied. Yet failed to say exactly why Jessie wants Bob to kill him that day.
Piper, since you saw the movie twice, you probably have a better memory than I, about what the narrator said after Bob just shot Jessie…..
I agree with everyone about the shoe being symbolic, but I’m not really clear what the shoe really represents - was it being tired of running away to be captured? or was it a sign that he was acknowledging the existence of his children (through his daughter’s shoe)as innocent victims of his way of life? Or maybe Dina is right, it’s a symbol of being tired of being constantly running away….
PT - I agree about giving the director a big props for making a stunning movie in every level. Trust me, this movie will be (is probably already) considered in the pantheon of one of the great masterpiece movies of all time.

Honestly, I think a 3rd viewing is necessary to jog my memory about what happened after Bob shot Jesse. I have to agree that Jesse didn’t think Bob would shoot him; after all, Bob really didn’t have a reason. I think he was long over being scared of Jesse, despite what he told Charlie. I could totally understand if Charlie did it and would’ve probably felt better about it if he did, because I just couldn’t see Charlie lying to Zee’s face and making a play about what he did to Jesse. Charlie was a skunk, of sorts, but a way better man than Bob, who seemed to have done this just as a way to one-up Charlie, which is pretty bent.
I am going to try and see it again tomorrow. I think I am either coming down with a cold, or just overly exhausted. But if I feel well enough I will see it again tomorrow. I nedd to see somethings over. Peace
I am thoroughly disappointed and disgusted.
My local theater has reduced the showings from 4 to 2. While it is encouraging that the new times are in the afternoon and evening, I am still upset about this.
It seems that PT and others weren’t bull$hitting when they encouraged people to see it as soon as possible.
