It was the 16th street baptist church bombing which happened september 15th 1963. I am not black and I am well aware of this tragedy. No a white curch as never been bombed but you point would be more valed if you actually were speaking from the heart and not out of anger and lack of knowledge of your history.I mean isn’t that what black history is all about. Seems to me you have not been participating just complaing in your peoples sufferage. Again read a book about the subject it would help your argument.

Miss Ellen, I really do not understand where you are getting your information. The 400 years of slavery refers to 1619 when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown. Slavery of Africans started with the Portuguese in the 15th century. So 110 years is just a little off. Africans did enslave members of other African tribes but that type of slavery was completely different. When one tribe defeated another slaves could be taken, but they were not enslaved forever and were not treated like slaves in America were. Furthermore, slaves in America were not treated as well as you suggested. Sure some were well cared for and even taught to read but they were by no means a majority. All of the situations you brought up were isolated cases. It is a fact that slaves were seen as property not human beings. I think you are forgetting the more than 3,000 blacks lynched in America, the 3/5’s compromise, and the fugitive slave laws. And when you said only 8-10% of white southerners owned slaves you were right but those few rich southerners owned all of the millions of slaves. Each owner did not just have a few slaves. The points you are giving are completely one sided and missleading. Many of your ideas may be true but definitely not on a large scale. I wouldn’t be surprised if next you start arguing that slavery was good for Africans

I am getting my information from archives and letter and many, many books. I am an expert on the Lowcountry and the task-oriented system that was used. And yes, the things I am saying were true on a large scale in that area of the South.

And I assure you, the slavery practiced by the Yoruba was more brutal than what you believe. They invented the coffles and bindings that were used. Those were perfected by them and used on their slaves. Yes, slaves were brought to the colony of Jamestown, but recall how difficult it was for ALL of those early colonists. I am talking about the the south. Slavery was not allowed in Georgia until 1750. Look it up. It’s true.

Now, about your statement that the small percentage of rich soutnern white people owning “millions” of slaves…what a hoot. There were about 3.5 million blacks brought to the American colonies. There were distributed out through all of the country. There were around 450,000 blacks in Georgia at the start of the Civil War, and a good percentage of those were free blacks. And Yes, some owners did in fact only have a few slaves. And like I said, there were black slaveowners as well. The life of Susie King Taylor illustrates this very well. Her memoirs are available online. She was educated and granted her freedom well before the Civil War. She was a medic with the group of soldiers depicted in the movie “Glory”.

Black history literature loves to inflate the numbers of how many were actually brought here. I have read one black author who said there were 24 million! What a liar. There are only 34 million blacks in America as of the year 2000.

And no, I won’t say that slavery was good for blacks. But I will say you can’t blame Europeans solely for it. And I will also say that Lincoln was all set to vote in favor of the Fugtive Slave Act, and when General Sherman came through Georgia, he left just as many black people to starve as he did whites. He was no savior, I assure you.
