The original America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry is speaking out against Black History Month and cable network BET (Black Entertainment Television) on her MySpace. The 25-year-old reality TV star is married to Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch. Leave your thoughts on her rant in the comments section! Here’s Adrianne’s post:
“This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color. However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is SICK and RACIST.

Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the f*** on. Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them b**** and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian, american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are, is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.
I am over this s***. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.
Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named “Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist s*** anymore. Let us teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally realize that WE are ONE.
So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month. Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a difference in this country.
I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian, Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY. If you want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out, count me the f*** out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2 months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!
It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE! My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not move forward. That’s why I am done with this s***. You are all my brothers and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with each other..sisters…brothers!”
Note:: Opinions are like a**holes, everyone…we all have em! Please, respect each other here…listen…even if you dont agree. No name calling. I have a confession…The topic here (black history month/BET) is not what my message was about… I just knew it would get a lot more attention if I used it as an example. My message is to BECOME ONE. AMERICANS, celebrate things as such, not label them this or that…Black History month should NOT go away…but it should have it’s name changed to AMERICAN HISTORY..and be made into a few months…to teach us EVERYTHING about our history…not just focus on one race. Yep, I have a hippie view of the world, and I dont care!! I am not saying to stop celebrating and remebering our history, good or bad. I AGREE that we need to teach MORE on american history concerning what we teach during “black History month”. I am not writing this to take away anything from anyone…we need MORE OF IT, but WITHOUT the race title!!!!

In Alaska, the Natives had separate entrances from the white. They are beaten because of the color of their skin. They were enslaved by other countries. They were given diseases for which they had no immune system for. The American Indians were forced to live somewhere, which was not their own home. They too, were given diseases that they hadn’t had before. How would you feel if Germany came over. Forced their way of life on you. Beat you because you couldn’t speak their language. Forced to leave the only area you lived in, your whole life? Then the white people realized the wrongs they did among a proud, but different people. Then they thought they could buy them off. Let them have their own land back, but where the whites chose it to be. And decided to help them survive the filthy diseases they brought them. Only the Indians got smart and did something with what they were given. Now, the white man is mad for the Indians making lemonade from the lemons they were given. The black were taken from their home, Africa. They were enslaved, but given a home (shack), land (garden) amongst them, the white people. If they disobeyed, they were beaten. White men beat each other and their children. Hung each other for stealing each others horses. Then the Americans freed them. Said they were free to live in the white mans world. They were free to move back to their own home, Africa.

I couldn’t agree with her more. I am sick of people (especially americans), using this “race” word. In most of Europe people don’t care. We’re all the same. I guess theres alot of racists here too, but not like in America. The only thing I don’t like about her comment on this is the fact that she’s saying “We, the americans”, blablabla stuff. Why can’t we stay together, the WHOLE WORLD. Americans are so selfish and doesn’t have a clue about whats going on in the rest of the world. They have also proved it.. Do we hear norwegians say “God bless Norway”. No. The rest of the world aren’t that selfish. what saddens me most is the often violent gut reaction from some of the posters here which prove that not only didn’t they get the point and sacrifices of their ancestors who tried to elevate their status as equals in society, but at the same time dishonour it. where’s your humility? shouldn’t you be smarter than that? it’s this gut-reaction that oftens prevents your acceptance into civilized society… my ancestors were african slaves who fought and won the independance of their country… every day is black history day to me…

There are so many comments here, no one will probably notice mine, so here is my two cents. Hopefully I make sense, its late here in OZ and Im tired.
I like that we are all different and we look different and we have different colours and we speak different languages and we have different histories etc etc etc.
I think it is unrealistic to say that we “are all the same”. The fact is people are different. And the difference is not only racial, its financial and religious.
I think if black people want to celebrate black month, they should be allowed to if they feel strongly about it. Im sure if Asian people felt so strongly about it they can have their month to and so could other races.
How boring would the world be if we were all the same. I think people should just concentrate on being kind. When you think about it, if people were “kind” none of the horrible things that happened throughout history would have happened and instead people would have embraced each other and lived as equals. But unfortunately that didnt happen and its kind of sad because I guess the repercussions are what we see in the comments here. Basically people hating on each other.
So I say lets work on being a bit kinder to each other, even though its sometimes hard because I really want my children to live in a nicer world when they grow up.

Black History Month shows the bad and good. The bad is the slavery and segregation they suffered. The good being how they over commed it with power and without losing hope. The month dedcated to them is used to remind us of the American wrong doing and learn from it. We learn that the first Americans did wrong and we LEARN to NOT follow their examples. It’s used honor the African Americans. Why not let them have it?

Curry is not suggesting that Cultural Heritage months be eliminated. Rather celebrate the diversity that the United States has, which includes all the nationalities and immigration of Asian, Latino and African Nations. I think it is time for a change to bring all Americans together as a group but still recognizing our cultural attributes and how important we are to each other. It is necessary that as Americans that we stop separating ourselves by skin color and race, but celebrate our cultures. This is what the United States is all about. America is a place of change for immigrants for all of us to build a new life in a new country. A new cultural month could be a place for healing in America. A Cultural Heritage month is a time to remember the genocide of Native Americans and their ancestors that have survived termination. How Native Americans kept their culture alive when government policy set out to destroy them. Also, a time to remember slavery and the effects slavery has had on our country and the devastation it has had on African Americans. How racism destroys trust, increases crime, imbeds ignorance, and hurts others. This actually could begin healing and forgiveness to bring people together instead of separating by color and race.
I think we need to come together and celebrate our diversity. To educate people who are from a different culture than our own will help eliminate ignorance. I am not talking about conversion to another way of life or religion but a time to set aside for positive recognition of our cultural and racial differences that include everyone. A time to understand that there is no white, black, red, or yellow race. That each of us regardless of skin color has a culture that needs to be embraced and cherished. I think this could be very fun and interesting. I am Ojibwe Potawatomi an enrolled member on a Native reservation and Jewish Polish descendant.
