Adrianne Curry: “Boycott Black History Month!”

The original America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry is speaking out against Black History Month and cable network BET (Black Entertainment Television) on her MySpace. The 25-year-old reality TV star is married to Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch. Leave your thoughts on her rant in the comments section! Here’s Adrianne’s post:

“This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color. However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is SICK and RACIST.

Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the f*** on. Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them b**** and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian, american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are, is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.

I am over this s***. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.

Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named “Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist s*** anymore. Let us teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally realize that WE are ONE.

So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month. Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a difference in this country.

I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian, Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY. If you want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out, count me the f*** out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2 months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!

It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE! My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not move forward. That’s why I am done with this s***. You are all my brothers and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with each other..sisters…brothers!”

Note:: Opinions are like a**holes, everyone…we all have em! Please, respect each other here…listen…even if you dont agree. No name calling. I have a confession…The topic here (black history month/BET) is not what my message was about… I just knew it would get a lot more attention if I used it as an example. My message is to BECOME ONE. AMERICANS, celebrate things as such, not label them this or that…Black History month should NOT go away…but it should have it’s name changed to AMERICAN HISTORY..and be made into a few months…to teach us EVERYTHING about our history…not just focus on one race. Yep, I have a hippie view of the world, and I dont care!! I am not saying to stop celebrating and remebering our history, good or bad. I AGREE that we need to teach MORE on american history concerning what we teach during “black History month”. I am not writing this to take away anything from anyone…we need MORE OF IT, but WITHOUT the race title!!!!

For people who say what have blacks contributed? Blacks made it possible for people to mow their lawns *the lawn mower* use elevators, use a gas burner, use bottled water or bottled soda *the top*, ink pens, dryers, eat ice cream, eat at the kitchen table, use dust pans, use ironing boards, obey traffic signals, use a mop, use a furnace heater, airconditioner, refrigerator, ink pens, range ovens, lawn sprinklers, use a comb or brush, use cell phones, use a lamp and use the toilet. Blacks contributed all those things; as well as a few more things listed below.

“disposable syringes, video home survelance security systems, blood banks, gas masks, traffic signals, fire escape ladders, the elevator, type writing machines, lawn sprinklers, lawn mowers, air conditioners, heating furnaces, dust pans, the refrigerator, the mop, the comb, the brush, ironing boards, the pencil sharpener, Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful open heart surgery operation, peanut butter, IBM computers, the pacemaker, Patricia Bathe invented a method of eye surgery that has helped many blind people to see, the almanac, the first satellite to send images from space, caps for bottles and jars, ice cream *Augustus Jackson*, gas burners, clocks spark plugs, ink pens, portable x-rays, golf tees, ship propellors, kitchen tables, cellular phone,s lantern/lamps, horse shoes, helicopters, guitars, toilets, range ovens and the list goes on.

So please don’t make it seem like the only things black have contributed were negative or not used by people around the world every single day, in every country, city & state, or continent.

As a white person and an educator, I have to say that I totally disagree with Ms. Curry. I think she is only doing this for publicity. Black history month is necesarry for a community whose contributions would otherwise go ignored. It some instances, it’s the only opportunity for young Black American’s to have a sense of pride about the accomplishments of thier ancestors. This post of Ms. Curry’s really speaks to her ignorance. I hope people will use this opportunity to really do thier research on why other ethnic groups are celebrated in this country and realize that it’s not just a chance to “*****” about slavery. I know that it’s easy for us as whites to just say “get over it”, and I agree that there are instances where some people play the “race card” to capitilize on a situation, but we really need to think about inequalities that others are faced with in this nation and I think it’s important that contributions of other ethnic groups are clebrated and studied by everyone.

While I agree with the underlying message of equality the idiocy and ignorance of this womans delivery and heavy handed declarations of opinion based fact (try thinking that out) is ridiculous. I personally believe that as a Nation we have all given up a lot of our pride. And as Black people we have all but completely let go of any set of values or sense of self that would garner us respect in the surrounding global community. With that said, tthis is one of the most abhorent pieces of writing I’ve read in some time. For clarity and brevity I’ve outlined what exactly caught my eye.

— Yes,and jews were not made slaves in the U.S. Further, Jews do have a time set aside in Europe to acknowledge the history of the people as well as funds to restore family wealth to those victimized by the Nazi’s in WWII. Lastly, America now has month’s for Spanish and native Americans.

Do you think comments like that will help Obamas campaign? He has many non black supporters right now, but, if more black people want to step up and say stupid things like that, then, he will lose his non black supporters.

YOU might not want to hear it, but it is the truth! Alot of people don’t want to hear sh*t that isn’t the truth!
Example: White people think that it isn’t racism in the world, but Black people see it around them everyday! And I highly doubt that Obama would turn away my vote! Everybody that is voting for him.has different reasoning behind voting for him, everybody is different! And truly we don’t really know that his true intentions, he can say one thing, and mean another…I am just ready for a change!

Seriously, I remeber wanting to hang myself in my American History courses…it was the same EVERY YEAR. Let’s learn about American colonialism and slavery. I almost pissed in my pants when we actually learned new things about Chinese, Filipino, and World History. Thank god for the History channel. I really think we should have a history month dedicated to every race; and there are other months dedicated to other races such as Hispanic History month; yet she fails to mention that. She also fails to mention social problems that maintain a cycle of poverty in the United States. Yes, if we still had Affirmative Action, than maybe it could have been changed to benefit poor families. The historical “black” colleges, hmm I think I need to do some research there. But I can assue you that there are white, asian, and hispanic people who actually go there. BET, yeah I understand her logic. But seriosly don’t boycott it, try to change it be meeting with execs. Boycotting it will just draw the WRONG attention and cause unnecessary drama. I wouldn’t be surprised if neo nazi and KKK groups join with her on this one. She sounds like a 14 year old and she should really read do some research before she makes these pompous allegations…

I can also assure you that there are MANY LAZY Hispanics, Latinos, Europeans, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Caucasian, Filipinos, Indian, Native Americans, Africans, African Americans, Australians, etc…etc. When some of the people on this bored call the African American race “lazy”, I hate to say that it really reminds me of what the KKK, white front, neo nazi ideology. Think about why you percieve that African Americans are lazy? Think about why we say Asian Americans are “good at math”, Hispanics “are fruit pickers”, White are “racist privileged people”, Blacks are “lazy”, Middle Eastern Americans are “terrorist”. It’s a malicious sterotype used to divide people. When are you going to wake up and realize that you’re thinking it what’s wrong with America. Everyone is the loser regardless of race. There are no winners here. This is why we allow our goverment to spend literally 1 trillion on a war across the world and spend a meager amount on our education HERE in America. Stop hating eachother and stand up for your country for once. Adrianne was being an ignorant woman who obviously didn’t make it past high school because she wasn’t smart enough to go to college. Seriously, look at her writing abilities. It’s embarassing…she personifies what’s wrong with our education system here.

i agree with the fact that if there was a white history month people would be ‘O thats so racist’. i think its really annoying that its 2007 and theres still segregation. i have loads different race friends and i dont see the colour i just see the personalitly and it really bugs me when rasitness keeps being brought up, its not true that everyones racist its just hard to put it at the back of ur mind when everyone keeps drumming on an on that the fact that somones a different colour.

I love the comment written by not blond. It is fear of the greatness of the combined others that perpetuate hatered towards black. We are always targed first because our skin colour makes us more obvious. But remember for all of you argreeing with Adrienne’s devisive statements racism has a trickledown affect. Just as Ronald Raegan trickle down economy trickeld down from blacks to poor whites. That is why so many poor whites are loosing their jobs today. Poor and middle class whites must educated themselve about their government the GOP who continue to send their children off to fight for oil and die so they can be called American Heroes.

Do not target black people because have had to fight every step of the way along with our Aboriginal American brothers and sisters for rights denied to us for centuries. And still today we are still denied jobs because of our skin color. For those of us who have made it, is not without pain and suffering. The goal of the supremist is to devide and conquer just as they have always done throughout history. All of the other nationalities who are agreeing and I know there are many of you there is one way to describes you it is called self hatered. I just say BET does not advertise itself all over the world. It is picked up and found by the world. If you have a problem with it then simply dont watch it. Just like if you have a problem with the cooking network the shows only about cooking then dont watch it.. that simple… dont go trying to boycot it. thats silly. I like MTV when its not cheesey, but damn they advertise their station on vh1 abc nbc and bet. atleast bet is their on company and only advertise on their own network. Now the reason why BET network is sooooooooo popular is because there is obviously some interesting intertainment on it. i know you want to pull away but you continue to watch. thats your fault. BET is one of thhheeeee biggest networks in the world and BET isnt going ANYWHERE! trust me!!! We all should consider ourselves just Americans. Then, hurrican Katrina happened. When we found out that thousands of people were stuck in a stadium without food, toilet, or water, President Bush’s mother declared, “And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them.”

Then Jena Six happened where 6 black youths are charged with attempted second-degree murder for kicking a white kid who was bragging about assaulting black students. Shoes were classified as “deadly weapon” in charging those students.

We have all white GOP Presidential candidates who refuse to participate in a debate hosted by a black college.

Calling ourselves just Americans does not erase American’s past and still very much present racial discrimination and injustice.

Could you imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and it was 6 white kids were charged with beating a black kid because he bragged about assaulting white students?!?! The blacks would be crying RACISM, that the black kid was charged for murder because he is black.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these black kids from Jena actually get time in jail, that the blacks won’t have riot and burn down their own neigborhood!

She has a point. I’m “black” but grew up in a “white” society. Didn’t know there was a difference till somebody explained to me. Some “black” guy started calling me “nigga”, as in “wuz up my nigga?” so I asked why I was being called that.

As long as you (all people) keep trying to find reasons to separate yourselves you’re slaves to ignorance… Ignorance that all our fates are interconnected in some way.

This girl’s rant is redundant, some of it is stupid, and even sounds hypocritical, but if you can read between the lines and see the intention you may just have hope.

There should be a line in the sand though and it should be measured by who we are and how wise we use our hearts and minds. Want to be on the side of negativity, ignorance, and violence then get the F out of this country.

As a “black” doctor (heaven forbid I just get to be just a doctor) I get too many ignorant patients trying to use the color of my skin for special treatment.

So my wife is from Ethiopia, and it was refreshing to just be seen as another person rather than a color. American preoccupation with skin color is the cultural problem -not the color itself-!

Get your heads out of your asses people, black, white, or whatever -you all bleed the same color- and you’ll never be guaranteed a donor race for a blood transfusion.

Don’t like her but I agree with her. Why is it okay for blacks to have their own groups and organizations, when if a college had the “white society of future mathematicians” everyone would shout RACIST!
