Adrianne Curry: “Boycott Black History Month!”

Homegirl obviously has some hangups on blacks. ASIANS, LATINOS and all other races get scholarship breaks because of their ethnicity. And just like others noted before, alomost every ethnicity has a month. Is it blacks fault that other cultures don’t make this obvious? What I deeply think is going on with some of you asians and whites is there’s an underlying jealousy about the way blacks unite because of out history.

Our history shapes our music, our dance, the way we speak to each other and I believe that makes ya’ll feel left out. But BET is a cultural thing, just like red beans and rice and collard greens is our food.

In short, we embrace Black History Month because its our history that unites us and makes us remember the long road we have walked. We don’t call it racist when Chinese americans celebrate Chinese New Year. We don’t get heated when Mexican Americans celebrate Cinco De Mayo.

just understand that blacks have things that are uniquely us and that’s because our culture has strived for that. If ya mad cuz you’re culture doesn’t make a bigger deal about their month, call them up and whine.

671 - you should track down a pbs series on Race. It looks at how race is basically a social construct reinforced by colonial and economic interests. But specifically it looked at how after world war 2, poor whites and working class whites were able to take benefits foffered to returning soldiers and turn those benefits into better education, thus better jobs, thus better conditions to send their children to university, leading to even better opportunities for their children (the baby boomers). And they were able to buy houses, with which they could build equity and trade up. With that equity they could develop savings . You see a huge increase in the white middle-classes after the war (though with current neo-cons in the whitehouse, the middle-class is being phased out). Before ww2, those same poor whites could barely find enough to eat - let alone buy a house. In otherwords, it takes money to make money.

However, Black servicemen were denied or received lower levels of benefits and the housing opportunities were almost completely denied to blacks. I mean after ww2, after fighting for America, Black people still couldn’t sit at the same lunch counter as whites. Without the economic opportunity, systemic poverty set in. This was pure racism.

The same happened to native Indian soldiers - in Canada and the US. Natives served in high numbers per capita, but were systimatically denied benefits or receieved less benefits.

Curiously, many Black and Native people in the US enlisted thoughout the 50s-90s, and used that opportunity to receive an education. But there was never that massive financial influx that saw america and canada changed from huge numbers of poor whites to the creation of a substantial middle-class.

I lOVE how she is called ignorant because she’s called a race out on their whining ****. Everyone is well aware of slavery, and equal rights, blah, blah, blah. If anyone knows anything about slavery, they would know that slavery STARTED by BLACKS on the west coast of Africa, BLACKS SOLD BLACKS for rum, sugar, etc. It was there OWN people that kidnapped them and sold them to other countries. Blacks also OWNED blacks in the US. No mention of that ever, and I’m not sure why????? Blacks also had the oppurtunity to leave the US and go back to Africa (Liberia), but chose to stay. For those blacks to whine about there race and how THEY have been treated unfairly, they are making a MOCKERY of their ancectors who truly suffered for THEM!

Go Adrianne. I understand where you come from with this. American History Month would be so much better. We could LEARN EVERYTHING so much easier. We’d probally have a better understanding of it also. Another thing, I am not racist, believe me, I am gay, and dated a cute african american guy. At the same time, people will be racist towards something. Lots of people hate the fact that there is a Black History month, and will be racist about it. But with the people who actually care about issues that involve racism, they will teach to stop racism. Also…Black, I just don’t like calling someone black. I normally say African American. And I like to be called American or English. It’s more proper and well mannered. So…Adrianne more power to you for coming up with a great idea. I love you, and you stand up for all that you believen. :] Maybe next time me and you can get together and discuss what we think about Gay Marriage if you support it, and we will talk about how much the Government goes against the Decleration of Independence by out lowing gays. It’s just not right. Also, who said that the Government had to be a religion. To me, the Government follows Christianity. Leave religion out of government, and politics. Worry about the damn country you want to run. Not what you want to do to make people satisfied, or how to make people follow certain rules that you don’t believen. I don’t understand how people can say “I don’t believen gay marriage.” Hello…are you an idiot? Gay marriage is allowed in a few countries, and there’s states and other countries that have special ceremonies. OH GOD…that sure does seem like it’s not there. How would some of you straight people feel if you went to a country that outlawed Straight Marriage? Huh huh? You wouldn’t feel to happy. You obviously didnt take a critical reading and writing class when you were in college. I never said I was suprised there arent black males or females into drugs at my university. I was simply listing obstacles that arise in the real world, the leading causes of failure for everyone…..white or black. What I dont understand is why you claim BET as a cultural channel?? I dont claim The OC or ******* Laguna Beach as white cultural shows. If I did I would be ashamed to call myself a Caucasian-American. Now dont think that I am claiming that my views are parallel with my peers or my people, but it obviously seems that you are speaking on the behalf of yours….

Don’t get me wrong I am very sympathetic toward those who have suffered bias, racism, and prejudice toward themselves or their ancestors. My mother is jewish and only 3 of her mother’s 6 sibling escaped nazi Germany during WWII. It is because of this fact that I am not only sympethetic toward those who are from various races, religions and nationalities that have suffered indiference but it also makes me want to scream GET OVER IT ALREADY!! Example: this young man that has been locked up in Jena for months, wake up call its not racism its called justice-he was on probation PEOPLE!!, just because he’s black he’s supposed to be treated with kid golves??…HELL F’N NO!! If it was racism dont you think that the other kids would be locked up to. Every thing involving a black person does not entail a million man march. It’s so ironic how the Iranian president is allowed to speak his mind @ columbia University who adomently denies the holocaust and nobody says a word but if it was someone who denied slavery ever occured there would be a riot!! Do what the jews and many other races have done; consider your ancestors past a stepping stone for you and your childrens childrens to move on and create a posotive future rather than living in the past.

Can you say Attention *****?! Are you serious? Lest you forget MTV & VHI didnt really start playing hip hop until the mid 90’s (mtv with Run DMCs walk this way) at least 10 yrs after their launch. how about the fact that at least 70% of the nations music radio stations dont play R&B or Hip-hop AT ALL! (country and “pop” are readily available in EVERY market!!) how about the fact that besides BET and TVOne about 70% of the other tv stations are geared towards whites! Black history month sheds light on facts and information that;
1. isnt taught in every school
2. we all take for granted
3. is very important to the formation of this nation we live in.

Yes we all do come from Black Ancestors, so why not give us a little damn respect?

The Jews and Native Americans dont have their own TV channels, I’m sorry but guess what they do have; They still have ties to their culture. They have their own language (spoken and written) they have respected customs and values. Black Americans dont have that because guess what your forefathers plan worked. All of our ties to Africa have been burned or shredded in someones office a long time ago!

First of all, I think she is correct. Only on some aspects though. First of all, to the moron who said “by being white only she is privileged” , Ummm, how so? Like Curry said, there is no white college fund. I graduated from the home school program, and I am stuggling to pay for my own education, if I were black, there’d be a fund there to help me out. Hows that for “privileged”? Second, I have a 10 month old beautiful baby. When I was pregant, I had almost no prenatal care, because medicaid wouldn’t help me. However, everytime I went to their office to beg for help and turn in another application in hopes of seeing a doctor, the room was filled with black and hispanics, who were all being helped. Sounds like being “privileged” to me. And um, I live in the crappiest area of town, too. And I’m not crying about it. I have $1,300 in hospital bills on my credit that I can’t pay, but if I weren’t white, medicaid would help me. How do I know this you ask? I applied for help 7 times through the course of my pregancy, all the while checking white and non-hispanic on my applications. On my 7th and final application, I was approved, but only after lying and checking my race as “unknown”. So tell me about how white people are “privileged” again? My best girlfriend is Thai, and my best guyfriend is BLACK, and HE’S the one who told me to lie about my race. I don’t have White College Reunion, there is no White college Fund, and if there we’re, a large part of the black community would cry discrimination. I’ve had enough with IGNORANT black people calling white people “privileged”. I’ve never put this much thought into this matter until not, whereas I try to remain colorblind, but with people saying that we, as white Americans, have it any easier than you, is poposturous. If anything, the lack of Government support we are given would make it harder. I don’t hate any race, but it is very IGNORANT for anyone to call White’s “privileged”. And if we are, they must think I’m black, because I haven’t seen the fruits of this so called one-up that you seem to think we have. Like I said before, Keith, one of my closest friends is black. He and my white boyfriend are bestfriends. And generations of the Carters and Alexanders were best friends, despite race. Even though times of extreme segregation. We all struggle, and we all see hard times, nobody is more “privileged” than the other. We are all, however, privileged to be a part of this grat Nation, that allows us to speak our mind. We all need to embrace our Americanism, and if you don’t posses it, then leave this country. And stop calling whites “privileged”. This really chaps my ass, and if we are so “privileged” I’d like to hear the ways we have one-uped the blacks. I am a white female, I pay my own hospital bills, education fees, and for all the groceries I use. I am not on WIC, and I don’t expect anybody to hand me anything, because they never have. So show me the privlege I posses over you. Please point it out to me. Go ahead and respond to this, since you’re right and I’m so “privileged”. Because I can’t see it. I’m a struggling mother of a little girl, I work my ass off, as does my boyfriend, to support her and myself. I have a crappy minimum-wage job, and nobody is offering me anything, And that’s fine, because it’s the American Way. You work to live and obtain things, and if anybody is “privileged” it’d be the Black Community, with it’s college funds, and alliances and so forth, offering them financial aid, medical care, and support. As white, I have none of that, and personaly, you can keep it. What does not kill you makes you stronger, and I’m better than those of you who call me “privileged” or a “typical-white girl” I am white, and I myself don’t know what that is. Never have I said “there’s a typical black girl”. How IGNORANT can you be. Congratulations, anybody with the above theory of “privileged whites” is a total un-American *******. Relocate, please. Go somewhere else and see if gets any better for you. I gaurantee you will come FLOCKING back here.

Aim - you are so full of shiite. Black people aren’t your problem - it’s your stupid country that pits poor against poor, black against white. Black history month invites you to learn something about the world around you. But I don’t believe you that you can’t get medicare. If you can’t then again its your system not the balck people waiting to the see the doctor who are to blame. College funds? Excuse me that is from fundraising and donations, raised by the Bkack community to help itself. There are plenty of college funds, bursaries and other resources for anyone who is qualified and motivated to go to school. If you don’t quailfy then perhaps your GPA isn’t high enough. So girlfriend, perhaps you just have to work harder to get smarter. BTW, it would be an awful waste of many minds if we all ended up having to be like you and the others on this thread who keep calling for us all to be the same. I don’t think I could stomach having the same sad poor me life you seem to be living.
