Adrianne Curry: “Boycott Black History Month!”
The original America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry is speaking out against Black History Month and cable network BET (Black Entertainment Television) on her MySpace. The 25-year-old reality TV star is married to Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch. Leave your thoughts on her rant in the comments section! Here’s Adrianne’s post:
“This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color. However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is SICK and RACIST.

Adrianne Curry: “Boycott Black History Month!”
Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the f*** on. Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them b**** and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian, american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are, is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.
I am over this s***. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.
Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named “Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist s*** anymore. Let us teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally realize that WE are ONE.
So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month. Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a difference in this country.
I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian, Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY. If you want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out, count me the f*** out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2 months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!
It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE! My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not move forward. That’s why I am done with this s***. You are all my brothers and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with each other..sisters…brothers!”
Note:: Opinions are like a**holes, everyone…we all have em! Please, respect each other here…listen…even if you dont agree. No name calling. I have a confession…The topic here (black history month/BET) is not what my message was about… I just knew it would get a lot more attention if I used it as an example. My message is to BECOME ONE. AMERICANS, celebrate things as such, not label them this or that…Black History month should NOT go away…but it should have it’s name changed to AMERICAN HISTORY..and be made into a few months…to teach us EVERYTHING about our history…not just focus on one race. Yep, I have a hippie view of the world, and I dont care!! I am not saying to stop celebrating and remebering our history, good or bad. I AGREE that we need to teach MORE on american history concerning what we teach during “black History month”. I am not writing this to take away anything from anyone…we need MORE OF IT, but WITHOUT the race title!!!!

She doesn’t seem to understand that along with the horrors of slavery there are other reasons Black -Americans feel as they do. For one thing, our families during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s continued to be treated unjustly in their own country. This attitude was insidious and based solely upon one thing, race…the color of one’s skin. Prior to the 1960s, the Supreme Court had determined that segregation was an accepted policy and condition in which to live, instead of being viewed as immoral and unjust. Unless you have walked in my shoes, it’s impossible for you to understand what I feel. Adrianne has not walked in mine as a young Black-American woman, therefore, she can never comprehend what I experience on a daily basis. Although I may not know first hand the suffering of my African ancestors, I do know what my grandparents had to deal with as they attempted to educate their children and maintain gainful employment during this time in our history. Just like Jews, it’s important for Black -Americans not to forget the abuse and atrocities that happened in this country, so we can learn from them. This was passed down to me and my siblings and we will continue the family legacy with future generations.
As a teacher, I celebrate Black History Month, White History Month( the only history taught on a daily basis from the curriculum) Latino Awareness Month, Asia Awareness Month, and any other ethnic group I may have in my classroom. Although I may understand vaguely Adrianne’s premise of one America, I find it imperative that we celebrate and embrace our differences instead of pretending they don’t exist.
Since only one racial group was mentioned in her post, I thought a little exposure to some of the other educational opportunities being offered, could broaden her personal knowledge base. Scholarships and educational opportunities exist for dozens of ethnic groups not just Black-American students:
Albanian, Creole, and Manchurian Fund
Japanese American Citizens League
La Unidad Latina Foundation
The Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund
Scholarships through the McDonald’s Hispanic American Commitment to Education
Big corporations like Microsoft also award ethnic scholarships
Xerox awards the Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship
McDonald’s provides scholarships through the McDonald’s Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources.
Check with regional or national offices of churches. The United Methodist Church provides Ethnic Scholarships each year
Asian American Journalists Association Scholarship
Minority Geoscience Student Scholarship
National Society of Black Engineers
Financial Aid for Native American Students
Laguna Education Foundation (Native American)
It would help in the future if Adrianne researched her topic, so she doesn’t look so ill-informed and uneducated.
I’m not going to bother arguing with you idiots. I don’t care if you are Chinese or Lebanese.
The bottom line is WHAT THE F*** IS IT TO YOU?
Does Black History Month cost the government a BILLION OF DOLLARS?
It’s basically meaningless anyway, so what is the BIG F**KING DEAL?
JUST STFU and LIVE YOUR OWN PATHETIC LIVES.
VH1 40 Dumbest Quotes Ever? This idiot is one of the guest commentors on it. VH1, do you hear me?
There was a TV station for Asian-Americans (”AZN television”) and no one called it racist, and it wasn’t. BET isn’t racist, I just think most of the material is garbage, lots of exposed women etc.
If you think those types of channels are racist.. you should consider the reality that on most mainstream TV stations, there are VERY FEW Asian characters in sitcoms, and only a few black and Hispanic or Latino characters. So, the only way to guarantee that you’ll see some diversity, or members of your own race, is to tune into those designated stations.
Really though, can you think of ANY American TV show in the last 10 years that had a lead character who looked Indian? So, if there was to be a TV show with all Indian-American characters (.. well, and one token white guy), is that racist? Maybe it could be, but I still wish there was more diversity (not just White, not just Black) on television.
(… and by the way, the AZN Asian-American channel is no longer in existence. Sigh.)
I am black and I can see Adrian’s point that we should celebrate all races. Black History month and BET were stated when black really didn’t have any platform to celebrate out heritage. It’s crazy to celebrate BET and Black History month, like anyone cares or will miss her anyway.
Here’s the list of Heritage months:
February African American History Month
March National Women’s History Month
May Asian Pacific American Heritage and Older Americans Month
September National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15)
November National American Indian Heritage Month
Correction…I meant it’s craxy to “boycott” BET and Black History month.
Correction…I meant to say it’s crazy to boycott BET and Blacnk History Month.
Why do we even care what the hell this failed “model” has to say about anything? By her own admission she goes to counseling several times a week; it’s evident she has a LOT of issues. Just maybe she forgot her meds!!
Oh yeah for those of you who said blacks get to go to college for free just for being black–forward me that information because I am paying back $60k of my own damn money for my education and would like to on that bandwagon! Funny!
AND the bigget thing she has ever done in life was “bag her Brady” .
She’s not even black. BET and Black History month will not miss her.
why are we still talking about this D-list celebrity??
I am a hard working A.A female living in Texas and believe me it is hard living in the conservative south, but for u to down Black history month is so ignorant.
By the way there is a month set aside to dedicate to Native Americans, so get your facts straight before you post another blog.
Matter of fact ill leave you a list
Here’s the list of Heritage months:
February- African American History Month
March- National Women’s History Month
May- Asian Pacific American Heritage and Older Americans Month
September- National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15)
November- National American Indian Heritage Month
IM PROUD TO BE AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND WILL SUPPORT IT TIL THE DAY I DIE. GET UR HEAD OUT OF UR ANAL AND GET INFORMED ABOUT THE SITUATION AT HAND BEFORE ANOTHER DUMB ASS BLOG LIKE THIS IS POSTED.
THANKS A VERY LIBERAL AFRICAN AMERICAN!!
***STOP MAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT COLOR***
I came across this post of adrianne who ever the “F” she is, and found it to be absolutely stupid. How dare you try and touch on a race whom you have no relation to. You trying to unite the races is a good thing, but you can not erase history and the struggles that certain races went through. There are still people living today who experienced racism to the highest extent and you want to act like racism ended a thousand years ago? Hell no! Blacks are not the only race with their own stations, you have telemundo, and alot of stations to the like, the problem is that most people tune into BET because it is actually a good station. If you drop BET you should drop all of the spanish speaking networks and so on, because as you said, we should all be considered one race. But………what makes the white race the best race? Why can’t every day be mexican day or black day? America is built on diversity and if you don’t like that maybe you should move to some secluded country like china, that way you can really feel equal. I always knew that you were ignorant, just not to this extent. As being a college student I know that there are scholorships for all races including whites, asians and whoever else you felt like got excluded. There are scholorships for having blue eyes, and not too many races have blue eyes………..but I know one that does. This is america, built on the blood, sweat and tears of many races, some more than the others, so while you are talking sh*t about black people acknowledging their history maybe you need to sit down and, I don’t know……..read a book, and realize why we do the things we do. They teach american history all of the time, but they never really include any of the african americans or mexicans, or asians, or chinese or any other race that have made this country what it is today. You can sit there and claim that you are not racist as long as you want, but it you weren’t you wouldn’t single out the black race. why not talk about cesar chavez, or the chinese customs that are acknowledged here?
If you want to stop racism, stop the white supremist groups from calling us “NIggers” stop them from hating jews, stop them from belittling the role that mexicans play in our country. Do all of this and maybe one day I will see your point of view.
You and other whites along with Asian girl is so ignorant. There is a European Heritage month which is celebrated in October dummies, asian american month in may along with jewish american month dumb asian girl, hispanic heritage month is september, native american and alaskan month in november, irish american month in march along with st. patrick day. spanish speaking people have two television stations dumb white people, and stupid asian girl. blacks are the only people in this country who were stolen from their homeland and had their language, culture, religion and history stolen from them. it’s obvious by the dumb commints of white people like your that you have never acknowledge black history month or learn real american history. your people have vh1,mtv, abc, cbs, nbc, and countless other channels. asian people benefit off the tragedy of blacks just like whites do. the only two groups that have suffered in this country was the blacks and indians. if we teach real american history let’s teach how the whites stole this country from the indians, and killed the indians and africans with their dirty diseases like smallpox, rape, murder, and stole other people history. europe was in the dark ages when indians and africans had thriving civilizations. so why don’t white people go back to europe where your ancestors come from, american don’t belong to you. africans and their descendants built this country for free with no say in the matter and made your lazy, greedy ancestors rich. white females are the biggest benefactor of affirmative action. yes your receive affirmative action, just like stupid asian girl and her people but your ignorant people only believe blacks are the ones who benefit from the program, stupid, stupid, stupid people.the fact that you said you dated a black guy says your a racist. if race does not matter why claim he’s black. and you know you don’t have any black friends. knowing a black person do not mean that’s a friend. there is a difference between a friend and an acquaintance. why don’t you do everyone a favor and just join your kkk, and skinhead friends at a rally because that is what you really are. italian , and polish history month is celebrated in october, scottish month is april stupid white girl.
rock on sister
I’m of Irish Canadian heritage and just learned that March is Irish American heritage month, and has been since 1991. I don’t recall my kids learning ANYTHING about Ireland in school that month as they do when it’s black history month……
If the failed “Top Model” has issues about the perception that BET is targeting towards a Black market then she needs to really take a look at American TV/cable. BET is owned by Time-Warner. Hispanics have at least 22 stations, the Asians have several and the Russians have several. There is only 1 Black owned cable show it is called “One.”
She is a model, why take her seriously????
Maggie & Heather. You are two idiot losers! We have “White History” every day in this country. Who do you think fucked it so bad? WHITE PEOPLE!!!!
I can understand and see both sides of this issue…however I am more partial to Adrien’s comments. The reason for this is simply because (and it has been said before) by singling out a race you are only keeping racism alive. Let’s think about it this way….you are flipping threw your cable network channel and see “White entertainment television” ….I’m sure there would be a number of angry viewers….What was so wrong with MTV that there was a need to create another music channel and throw the color card in the name? CMT is country music television, MTV is just plain MUSIC television….do they not play ALL types of music? Was that not good enough? Why not call BET RRTV…for Rap and RandB? Why single out that type of music to a color of skin or a type of people?
There may be months where other racist are celebrated however…our school systems don’t recognize those months now do they? I hate to break it to people but reverse rasisim exists today much more than rasisim does. Reverse racism…..meaning that people of one race assume those of another are racist before finding out and are there for being resist themselves.
Our idea of history should change….to AMERICAN history in which EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is learned about …so maybe this means changing the history books.
The last thing i have to say about Black history month is this….I believe our children should learn about all the contribations made my African Americans as well as I do any other race in America…..however the school systems where I am from have taken black history month to an extreme. I know this because both of my children have come home VERY upset that “we” are bad people because “we” are white and we hurt black people ect. Now i don’t know about you….but anyone i know who was involved with slavery is passed and i had nothing to do with it…. Slavery was a part of life…a way of life back then. I am not saying it was right…however it was not done only in America…it was done all over the world to many many different races. Thankfully for the most part it does not exist today as it did then…and the stigmas that came with it would be long gone if only we would let it be.
@Carla:
You have one month? No…..we all have ALL 12 months every year! It is not the holidays that need to be changed it is the history books….the history books need to incorporate ALL of AMERICAN history into it’s books….therefore illuminating the need to single out any race for a month of learning and celebration.
@lula29: @LOVE ANGELINA:
There was never any comment made that suggested that African Americans were involved in the slaughter of more than THOUSANDS of Native Americans in America.
You don’t have anything? You have all of the same opportunities that I do and I am white. We’ve been going to school the same amount of time…with the same opportunities….and aside from that there are quite a few MORE opportunities that you have today than I do. Being there are foundations for only black people, scholarships, grants, and let’s not forget equal opportunity programs.
White people were oppressed too…every race has been at one time or another in history. Why the hell do you think we all boarded the Mayflower and headed to some unknown land in the first place? This should be about embracing each other and our history and our differences….not segregating ourselves to the point of these discussions.
P.S. Coming from a “white” person (really I’m Italian, Swedish, and Norwegian…oh and African American being that all of the people on Earth today can trace their roots back to AFRICA…..) black history month in one high school i went to where “white” kids were a minority….was a very challenging time for me. You didn’t know weather to sit or stand…if you were supposed to or not…if someone would get mad at you or not…I didn’t understand the whooping and hollering that went on and didn’t know if I was supposed to participate in this or not….So why gear a month that is supposed to be a celebration and a time to learn the HISTORY of black people…..into making it so uncomfortable for any other race to participate?
ALSO….Should we not forget that Africans were the one’s who choose and sold their ancestors to “white” people in the first place? It was an unfortunate way of life back then….for a lot of different races. A large number of the things we celebrate in history all over the world would not have been possible if it were for the use of slaves. Was it right? No…..but it was.
@LOVE ANGELINA:
Yes white people and predominantly white schools do celebrate black history month….and yes they celebrate in two completely different ways….I know because I have been to both. From Northern Cali where it was predominantly white to North Carolina where it is predominantly black….i have seen the difference in the way schools teach and celebrate black history month.
@Melis: They are only being “oppressed” because they refuse to conform into society. If you take a black child raise him/ her in a white city he/she will be successful.
There is nothing in-factual about what she is saying. At least what her general point is saying. To point out ones race as a form of separating is by definition racism. Calling Obama the first black president (when he is actually half black) is racism. By acknowledging he is black, you are separating him, even if to praise him for his accomplishments.
Black Entertainment Television perpetuates a separation of entertainment, marketing, and acknowledgment. To participate in that station is to further divide by race. While this form of racism seems harmless and not like racism at all, it is the worst because it is accepted and considered normal.
Black History month in turn does the same thing by lifting only the actions of a certain race. It would be one thing if it was African Heritage Month. Celebrating nationalities or geographical pride is much different then celebrating a race. Racism, I’m afraid, will always exist. Especially if Black History Month remains on our calenders.
really? saying white people are racist because there are still black people living in ghettos? that really dumb. there are white people living in ghettos. and hispanic people. and asian people. thats poverty, not rascism. and there are plenty of educated well respected blacks people who live better than white people, and they deserve to live better… wanna know why? because they worked at it. they went to school and got a good job and live a good life. it doesnt matter what color your skin is. everyone has the oppertunity to a good life. you have to take it. and im pretty sure that a blue eyed white skinned person cant get a scholarship just because of the color of their skin. i know black people can…….. so instead of blaming poverty on racisim, blame it on lazy people who would rather blame someone else for their misfortune than themselves. and thats not just black people. i know a whole lot of lazy ass white people who will never live the life of someone successfull because they wont work at it. and no one is ever gonna give them a handout just because they are white.
