The original America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry is speaking out against Black History Month and cable network BET (Black Entertainment Television) on her MySpace. The 25-year-old reality TV star is married to Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady on The Brady Bunch. Leave your thoughts on her rant in the comments section! Here’s Adrianne’s post:
“This is gonna be hard guys. I LOVE the comedians on BET. I also LOVE the fact that they play my favorite show of all time, In Living Color. However, I do not believe in seperating ANY RACE in America. WE ARE AMERICANS! How dare we have Black History Month! In my eyes, the Native Americans deserve it MUCH more, seeing how we destroyed their ENTIRE SOCIETY. There are hardly any of them left! They also have been proven to have the WORST living conditions on their reservations. I want AN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH. One where we learn about EVERY race, ALL OF OUR LEADERS, EVERYONE! I think by having a month dedicated to one race, and not one for any other, is RACIST. Every fund set up to only help people of one race is SICK and RACIST.

Yes, I get it. Black people were slaves here once. You know what? That does suck some major balls, however, it is time to move the f*** on. Do we hear the Jews crying that they were made slaves for thousands of years? Do we hear them whine that they should OWN the pyramids in Egypt because THEY broke their backs making them? Do we hear them b**** and moan about Hitler, etc? (my hubby is a Jew)Nope, we dont. It’s time for us to UNITE AS ONE. I do not think that singling out one race, giving one race opportunities to go to college (I know a TON of poor white.asian, indian, american indian, etc etc that could use that too!), giving one race the EXCUSE to blame things on others for being whatever nationality they are, is a good way at making sure we NEVER kill racism.
I am over this s***. WE ALL CAME FROM ONE BLACK WOMAN FROM AFRICA, THAT is our EVE! It has been proven by science, and I stand by it. If any other race had a chanel dedicated to just them, we would think it was racist. If any other race demanded a month be set aside for ONLY them, they would be considered racist. I am NOT living by this double standard any longer.
Think I am racist? I am not. I know what racism is. I dated a guy named “Justin” in Junior high. Nothing serious, but I really liked him. He was the blackest of black…BEAUTIFUL skin, kinda like Alex Wek’s. He was handsome, and athletic, etc. I was called a nigger lover. But you know what? I was called that by a whole 2 people out of a school with HUNDREDS of students. THAT is why I am NOT buying this racist s*** anymore. Let us teach or children that there is NO DIFFERENCE! We are all human. I hope one day aliens land and try to kill us. Maybe THEN we would finally realize that WE are ONE.
So, I will no longer tune into BET. This is going to suck, but I do NOT like the idea of having a chanel for only 1 race. In the year 2007 in a country that is supposed to be the most advanced and equal. This is unexceptable! I will also no longer acknowledge Black History Month. Instead, I will see it the way that Morgan Freeman does (I have the quote at the bottom of my last blog on Obama/jesseJackson, and OJ). AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH! I will read/watch/and learn about ALL the people who made a difference in this country.
I am asking you ALL to join me. Black, White, Indian, Asian, Russian, Australian, etc etc…..lets be AMERICANS together! What happened to the African American community was AMERICAN HISTORY, not BLACK HISTORY. If you want to celebrate in a way that excludes others and singles one race out, count me the f*** out! I am soooo proud to be an American. I am SO proud that I have friends of every race, and none of us see each other as anything but what we are..people. Lets change Black History Month to 2 months of AMERICAN HISTORY. We will still learn about all the black leaders and people who made a difference….just not with the racist name of “Black History Month”. It has to start somewhere. I am going to do my part in making sure we are all treated EQUAL in a country that CLAIMS we are. NO MORE SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE WITH ANYTHING!
It will never happen. At least, that is what many of you will say…FINE! My number one priority here is being able to die and know that I stood up for what I believed in, and that I did not add to the SEPERATION OF AMERICANS!! I love my country, I love the people in it. I love our history, good and bad. We should LEARN from it,not dwell in it and not move forward. That’s why I am done with this s***. You are all my brothers and sisters…..even if I think you suck ; ) As Bono said, “One life, with each other..sisters…brothers!”
Note:: Opinions are like a**holes, everyone…we all have em! Please, respect each other here…listen…even if you dont agree. No name calling. I have a confession…The topic here (black history month/BET) is not what my message was about… I just knew it would get a lot more attention if I used it as an example. My message is to BECOME ONE. AMERICANS, celebrate things as such, not label them this or that…Black History month should NOT go away…but it should have it’s name changed to AMERICAN HISTORY..and be made into a few months…to teach us EVERYTHING about our history…not just focus on one race. Yep, I have a hippie view of the world, and I dont care!! I am not saying to stop celebrating and remebering our history, good or bad. I AGREE that we need to teach MORE on american history concerning what we teach during “black History month”. I am not writing this to take away anything from anyone…we need MORE OF IT, but WITHOUT the race title!!!!

Wrong. Didn’t happen. Europeans didn’t go into Africa until the 1500’s and then it was resources they were after. They were approached to buy slaves by the black tribesmen that were already dealing in people, but they declined at that time. It wasn’t until about 150 years later they decided they needed laborers for the Carribean that they bought any.
The Yoruba, on the other hand, were dealing in slaves for centuries before that.

It all comes down to presentation. Had she chosen differents and different ways of communicating her ideas she might have found an open and willing audience to her ideas. But because she presents it in an in your face manner everyone just gets defensive right back at her.
She has some valid points - now if she could just take some public speaking lessons on how to get an audience on your side……………..

You are partially right. It has really been around since the beginning of time. It is an inevitable state of the human condition, and every race all over the planet has been the victim and the perpetrator of it.
Blacks are not special because they have been slaves. Every race can claim it as a hertiage. At some point in history, we have all beeen owned by someone else.

Black people have more trouble with other peoples attitudes toward us. I have good looks and education, yet I have gone many places and white people automatically want to keep me out of things. Black people have f-e-a-r. A lot of us dont believe we can do anything we want because of society. White people can go anywhere they want. They can go to the blackest nations and get respect. Blacks are always on the lookout not to enter places or do our wildest dreams because whites and other races keep saying we are not allowed in or they don’t want us there. Whites are allowed to do everything! They can sing rap music and encroach on areas that are nonwhite and be accepted. Jews can hide who they are because of the color of their skin. Black people can’t do that. White people are so hate-filled that when they meet a black person who is different, they still try to make him feel small or like are better than him. I’ve experienced this so many times. They act like we’re not supposed to have nice things or what they have. White people must get over themselves first and stop feeling ENTITLED. They generally think everything belongs to their race.
That holds people back. You can say get over it, but it’s not that easy, especially when you have generations of that attitude before you. Do you know how it feels to not feeling welcome in places or to be called ugly monkeys and stupid? It’s YOUR attitudes and prejudgment of us that makes a lot of us insecure and feeling like why get educated when people are still racist. You have to constantly fight. You might go for years and be around nice people and then one day, you have the most ugly experience with a white racist. It’s happened to me all my life. You can ignore, but what if it’s a boss or a person on your job and you can’t quit?
This is not making excuses. Blacks have it h-a-r-d-e-r than any other race and whites will never fully understand what we feel like. We have to push harder in every aspect of our lives. We can’t just walk into country clubs, play golf, surf… or whites have an attitude of Why Are You Here. You Don’t Belong Here. This Is Ours. Leave! Why? Because of their superior attitude and thinking they are the best race around. That’s the hub of it. It doesn’t matter if you are a decent black person. They still hate your race and don’t want you around to participate in things that they get to do.

Ugh, I hate when white people complain about reverse racism. I go to a school in the south, where there are only two black people in my entire class. They use the word N****, they laughed about Don Imus calling those college students nappy headed hoes, they talk about the obese black people, they mock people from the ghetto, and I have walked in on several convos where they’re talking about oh “I like black people, but she has an attitude blah blah blah,” what does that have to do with race? They also talk about Mexicans and Asians… etc.
Maybe I am biased against white people, but it is with good reason.

Lihara, the Hispanic channels and Assian channels serve their communities because they’re in diffferent languages, so unless some people can get educated enough to learn a different language then they really wouldn’t be able to understand what they’re talking about. Also, Univision and Telemundo are the only two main Nationwide Hispanic channels out there but do they call themselves The MEXICAN Entertainment Television? Or the VENEZUELAN Entertainment Television? No and that’s because they want to appeal to people that speak spanish regardless of what nationality they are.
So far no one has answer my question not even Freedom, which I find really cowardly for some of you to ignore it. Since we have a BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION Network, would it be ok if someone else came out with a WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION Network where their targetted group would mostly be white people?????
And Freedom for you to say that hispanics are the 2nd next to white’s to being racists I think that’s a bunch of BS. So what study shows that? For my experiences in life, and this is what matters to me, I’ve been discriminated more from Black people than I have from White people. Like I previous mention before, Every race has people that discriminate against other races and Mexicans are surely not the exceptions and I see and understand that. You obviously have your head so deep in your butt that you can’t see that. YOu think that everyone discriminates agains blacks but blacks don’t discriminate against anyone else. History also tells us that in 1820, a group of former slaves from the American South went back to Africa and with the help of white abolitionists, and set up a country called Liberia. And what did those former slaves proceed to do once they got there? Yeah, you guessed it. They enslaved the native Africans living there and oppressed them. Liberia is still a mess to this day because of it.

I agree with her underlying point, and think it’s definitely valid. First and foremost we ARE Americans. And it is true, there are so many African-Americans that are so quick to pull the race card (hello, Kanye West) … I think that we, as a country, need to stop pulling ourselves into groups and just be. The longer we do so, the more it feeds racism and segregation.
And um, since when do people sit down at their Thanksgiving table and remember about Native Americans? give me a break. it’s all about the turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy.

Oh Freedom. You’re seriously dissapointing me. I thought I could have a serious intelligent conversation with you about this issue but obviously you don’t know how to read well and you’re showing signs that you might not be too bright. The reason I said what I said about black people showing off their cars and houses was because someone else said that White people where so greedy and it shows on TV so I just happend to mention that not only White people are greedy but people from other races aswell as blacks.

Miss Ellen, I really do not understand where you are getting your information. The 400 years of slavery refers to 1619 when the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown. Slavery of Africans started with the Portuguese in the 15th century. So 110 years is just a little off. Africans did enslave members of other African tribes but that type of slavery was completely different. When one tribe defeated another slaves could be taken, but they were not enslaved forever and were not treated like slaves in America were. Furthermore, slaves in America were not treated as well as you suggested. Sure some were well cared for and even taught to read but they were by no means a majority. All of the situations you brought up were isolated cases. It is a fact that slaves were seen as property not human beings. I think you are forgetting the more than 3,000 blacks lynched in America, the 3/5’s compromise, and the fugitive slave laws. And when you said only 8-10% of white southerners owned slaves you were right but those few rich southerners owned all of the millions of slaves. Each owner did not just have a few slaves. The points you are giving are completely one sided and missleading. Many of your ideas may be true but definitely not on a large scale. I wouldn’t be surprised if next you start arguing that slavery was good for Africans.
