Adrianne Curry: Ban Black History Month (Part Deux)

Adrianne Curry: Ban Black History Month (Part Deux)

Former America’s Next Top Model Adrianne Curry is back for more after her very controversial “Ban Black History Month and BET” rant. Here is her “rebuttal” via her MySpace:

“Rebuttal to my Black History blog

Yep, I gotta try to clarify a few things here.

Firstly, I just want to apologize for how random my thoughts were in my last blog. I wrote what I did just minutes after a long heated discussion on the topic. I can hardly read the thing, it’s so damn random!

I think it is HORRIBLE that people misunderstood my message. Just because I wanted to stop separating races, doesn’t mean I want to STOP TEACHING HISTORY! Or schools need to teach MORE of ALL of it anyway! I was asking that we not name things to separate ourselves. I never claimed we shouldn’t learn our own history, or that of all the other countries on earth (which we as Americans are pretty bad at). I am very aware of all the amazing things hat black people have done for our country, and we should always be aware of it. However, separating our races sounds like racism to me. It just does. So go ahead, claim I am the one who is ignorant for wanting us all to be EQUAL! Can you believe that? How does that make a f***ing lick of sense? Honor your heritage, I know I do. Just make sure that by doing so, you do not seperate yourself from the rest of us! Black History to me would be everything that happened in AFRICA. I lived there for almost 5 months. Visted Robin Island, and saw the cell they held Nelson Mandela in. I witnesses first hand people calling these taxi vans “Black Taxis” and these nice taxi’s “white taxis”. Just vile.THAT is African(black if you will) history. African AMERICAN history is OUR history!

Adrianne Curry: “Boycott Black History Month!”

Yes, there was a time when racism ran rapid. It still does in some places. However, it is time for us to rise above it and BECOME ONE, instead of SOME. I wrote my last blog in such hurry and a fury because I felt what I was typing so deeply. I am appalled that anyone would claim I am just some stupid white b**** that doesn’t know s*** about anything. I did NOT grow up rich. I did NOT hang out with rich people. Watch the show “Roseanne” and you tell ME if that family seemed well off. That is just about where I came from. My family is blue collar all the way! Just because I worked hard to get where I am it means I don’t know how hard it is to LIVE LIFE? I was addicted to drugs, raped, abused, beaten, etc. I DO NOT DWELL ON IT! I choose to rise above it! I have been beaten up for being “the white girl” a few times, so don’t tell me I don’t know how it feels to be discriminated against.

My message about trying to rise above segregation, separation, and racism has been twisted. Some people are saying I am RACIST for wanting all races to embrace each other! You’re a f***ing dumbass if that is what you think! Again, let me make this clear, I DO NOT SUPPORT THE SEPERATION OF RACE IN THIS COUNTRY, ANY RACE. I DO NOT SUPPORT CHANELS OR FUNDS THAT SEPARATE RACE, HENCE ADDING TO RACISM! I never claimed to STOP teaching history that involves black people, I asked to STOP BEING RACIST BY SEPERATING GROUPS BY RACE! Truly educate yourselves on the true definition of segregation.

I enjoy sharing my thoughts here. Some people like it, and some people don’t. I come from an incredibly political family. (I am a Democrat). I enjoy a heated debate. I didn’t mean to “single out” only the black months/funds/channels. It was more of an example of how NO RACE should attempt to separate itself in such a way that ADDS to the problem with racism. Stop singling people out, and maybe…just maybe, the future will be full of people that were NEVER raised thinking people are so different because of their skin.

I wrote about what I did because I care. It makes me physically ill knowing that there are people that are still so closed minded out there that they hate someone because of their skin. My hope is that one day we will all wonder how anyone could have done that. I think that we need to teach MORE history in our schools. Of course, even more world history. I also think we should be more aware of what is happing in other countries. Of everywhere I have been on Earth, America shows the least news on what’s happing outside our “world”.

This felt good. I feel like I have got my point across better this time. I need to learn to relax on my impulse and calm down before I share. ; ) My Boo always tells me that. Thanks for listening.”

She should just stop adding fire to the flame, there is a reason behind BET and that was because at around the time Bet was set up, Tv rarely portrayed Blacks in Positive roles hence the need for Bet. Also so many channels are so “white” in the sense of the audience they cater to and the lack of portaying other Races on their shows but fail to carry the mark “White entertainment televison”, but i guess they try to be subtle about it while Bet are blatant about it.

She sounds like a complete IDIOT, she had to rebuttle the bull she said earlier and this explanation is just as STUPID AND LUDICRIOUS! And then to further insult us by saying we should celebrate African History and not African American History? African Americans came from Africa you f’ng moron! You talk about visiting Africa for 5 months, I have lived there all my life! You are focusing on TAXI’S!!!! She is SO STUPID! Why didn’t she focus on some of the starving children in Africa instead of Taxi. Superficial BIMBO!

magnus is a dumb ass stupid idiot, **** reponding to this dog ****. and whites ae becoming a minority not because blacks are having more babies, idiot, your white women are breeding for the black race last time i checked. maybe if your women would stop having so many abortions your race wouldnt be coming extinct. and isnt it funny white women dont have a lot of kids by white men but as soon as they date a black man they keep popping out the babies, why why why! heidi klum for one. plus i saw one mixed couple yesterday and they had 4 mixed kids , look like step ladders. so talk what your ignoranbt asses know.

Said like a true model who has knows absolutely nothing about the complexity of the African American issue. Honestly I believe you are just trying to get some press.

The truth is absolutely, there needs to be a healing in the black race from racism and yes still slavery. On any given day Oprah can be told she is not welcomed in Hermes department store or Russel Simmons still can’t not get a cab in N.Y. And a boy in Louisiana can be imprisoned facing a life sentence because his lethal weapon was a sneaker in fight all because he wanted to sit under a tree and some one put nooses on it.Racism is still alive and kicking.

Just because the founding fathers raped, murdered, every race they came in contact including Americans Inians does not mean we should we should not continue to uplift and recover from 400 years of slavery as an African American people.

You saw what happened when the(white folks) military came in contact with the Iraq POW’s dehumanizing sexualized homosexual and animalistic acts. They take this sick behavior back to their women and pass this sick behavior down generation after generation. But I suppose they should just get over it to.

And for the record Certainly not to minimize the holocaust in any way whatsoever world war II went on from 1940 to 1945 a horrible disgusting act but the suffering from the African Americans went on for oh 395 more years. The longer a person or a tribe or a race suffers the more damage it does.

And for the record no Jewish person would ever let you ever forget the Holocaust including your husband.

I think that her writing a part 2 makes no sense because it doesn’t make what she originally said any less ignorant. If her people have never been oppressed (which they have not), she has no say in a conversation like this. She needs to look up her facts before she starts to rant and rave about something she knows nothing about. If she has a problem with black history in month then maybe she should also have a problem with native american history month in november and latin american history month from september15 to october 15. She doesn’t realize that we only get a month ( the shortest month ) to learn about the great contributions of african americans, where we learn about european history and american history from elementary school until we graduate college. Just because she dated some african american kid for 2 months in elementary school doesn’t give her license to say what she wants but insist that she’s not rasist. If she’s boycotting B.E.T., is she also boycotting telemundo, univision, and mtv tres because they only deal with the hispanic culture? I doubt it. If she is really convicted of what she said, then she should have stuck to her guns and not let the people that have been dogging her out on myspace and the internet make her try to change her story and put out disclaimers. Obviously, she wasn’t taught what most people are taught, “Think before you speak”. The bell has already been rung and there’s no unringing it.

All this arguments make me really sad. Because what I see here is what causes all the troubles in the world: Intolerance.

Racism starts, as I said before, when we categorize people and mark them as different, and it all comes from the fear we as humans have of all that´s different. When we tell our kids to be careful of “the whites”, or to beware of being discriminated by white people, we are telling them we are different. When we go to work and a possition is offered to a white person, even if that person is in fact more qualified and we say we didn´t get the job because of racism we are putting ouselves down and marking ourselves as different.

I´m not denying that racism exists in America, in my previous post I mentioned that is the country where it is most palpable, but you know what, it isn´t just because of the cops pulling over more african americans or latinos, and it isn´t just because of statistics, is because within our communities, we are educated not to see aourselves as equals to other races, but as descendants of slaves, as victims, as underdogs. If that doesn´t change, racism will never change, because we start it, within our own families.

This comment by this girl, maybe it isn’t expressed in an educated fashion, maybe she used a wrong example, the wrong words… but the message for me is clear, she wants a country where there is no differenciation of race. And I wonder, if just because she is white, or because she now lives a comfortable life, her maybe idealistic comment has to be trashed like this. After all, don’t we want that for our children? What I’ve read here, is the same thing you all complain about, you are stereotyping this girl, and judging her intentions by her skin color. Isn´t that ironic, to complain about racism by being racists?

Maybe it is a matter of resentment for the past, of prejudices… but seriosly, how much time does it has to pass before we can stop judging people by generalizations of race. I know, I someday want my kids to live in the US, but I rather have a country full of naive people with uneducated ideals, than a country full of intolerant people who cant see past their own resentment…

But that´s just me…
=(

The above Post could not have been more well expressed.
Major Props DOVE! We need more people in this world like
you.

When the playing field has been unequally stacked because of years of oppression and current mind sets to consciously and unconsciously discriminate, we try to give the people with whom it have been stacked against a fighting chance to not only survive but thrive. That is what the Civil Rights Laws, quotas, Americans with Disabilities Act, ect.. tried to accomplish.

To the dismay of more intelligent society these law and acts are seen as a threat to less secure souls. People who do not want to accept that we are all different races, religion, cultures and beliefs are not looking at reality. Yes, we are all Americans. We don’t ever need to tolerate each other, but we need to celebrate each other and our differences. Variety is the spice of life.

Unfortunately, Adrienne Curry is just showing her ignorance. It is good she is speaking her mind and has created at least an open dialog on the subject. She is open about her beliefs, and I respect her honesty. She legitimately sounds like she is confused and just does not know. I don’t think it is coming from a place of hate but it sounds like she has not had a lot of experience with having very close Black friends for an extended amount of time. Trying to be a quote “Credential Carrier” by dating one of the Blackest guys in high school does not count. There are a lot of people just like her who truly do not get it.

Is Adrienne Curry contributing to BET in anyway for BET to care about her boycott? Does she buy the products on the commercials? She does not have enough respect to learn about the racial history and current history of the African Americans BET is representing.

Many of the networks are separated but the names just say CBS, NBC, ABC…ect, just because the network does not have white or Anglo American in the title does not mean they cater to every nationality.

When is the last time Adrienne has seen a Pakistan sitcom, or more than one Hispanic sitcom? I cannot even count on one hand how many African American shows are on any of the above mentioned networks. If I am wrong, please advise. I will not be offended, but hopeful.

I would also like to know what exactly did Adrienne Curry do for Blacks during Black History month, anyway for her boycott to be effective. Did she visit the Martin Luther Jr King center, or donate any funds to the King center or any African American Charities? Did she volunteer in a predominately African American Homeless Shelter? Did she foster or adopt an African American Child? Did she give money to help Save Darfur or educate her non-Black friends about African-American History? How could she when she doesn’t know herself.

RE: Ignorance is not Bliss, Poor Adrienne

(contitued from 1st post)
Black History Month, BET, JET Magazine and Ebony magazine are not racists. It is not exclusion but a celebration. There is mainstream American and then there are those who are typically left out or not really recognized on a daily basis. Those particular groups’ homosexuals, Hispanics, Asians, and African-Americans create their own culture and celebration to uplift themselves and bring up their self-worth and celebrate their culture and differences. They have to create their own magazines, televisions stations, radio stations, Heritage months, Parades ect…because if they did not they would be ignored. Everyone is looking out for their own agenda.

It is just like moving to China and being only 3% of the population. Sure you want to assimilate and learn the culture and join with the natives but how many TV shows, radio stations, magazines are going to be 1st of all in English, secondly, and how many are going to be based on American culture and tradition. Most will be in the Chinese and the tradition of the Chinese culture.

Some closed minded or narrowly thinking persons will say what about white history month but White America is the mainstream. I know African American who know more about European, White American or even Native American History than their own African American History. Why don’t we have a Male Heterosexual Parade? or quotas to make sure White males are hired? We do not have those events because they are the mainstream and there is not a need because they are the ones benefiiting from the mainstream culture. That is why we have the Alma awards, the Country Music Awards ect…..they are not recognized because they are not mainstream but they still matter and should be counted…..I am not Hispanic but I am not offended when they want to have a celebration of their culture and accomplishments outside of what American award show offer.

Everyone needs to stop being so offended when someone wants to celebrate their cultural difference, or set aside a particular time (a month) to educate everyone about the history and contribution of certain races. Racist is described in the Webster dictionary as based on racial intolerance, discriminatory, especially on the basis of race. I do not hear Adrienne complaining about the Gay Parades or other separate cultural or sexual events and celebrations. I do believe Adrienne is racist but her racism I believe comes from a point of ignorance not hatred.

Christopher Knight needs to take Adrienne from the deep end of the pool because she is drowning in her own stupidity. First she needs to tread water in the shallow end, when her mind and water can reach it’s own level. Chris please help her

Too bad she let her emotions get the best of her by writing a very demeaning, accusatory letter to Tyra Banks, otherwise Tyra could try to help educated her even more. It is ironic that Adrienne would not be where she is today or even know the husband she has if it were not for a Black woman, but she does not even remotely understand the plight or struggles of the African Americans. Again I will say take an African American History course…as a matter of fact take at least 3….

Girl……get informed and open your mind and time to spend with other cultures, especially African Americans. Slavery has everything to do with it. Not that Black people cannot let the past go but being enslaved for over 400 years and having other races come to America on their own free will, has a lot to do with it.

Do you tell a child who has been molested to move on, or a woman who has been abused by her husband for years to move, or someone whose family has been murdered or someone who encounters racism on a daily basis to move? Do you tell the Jena 6, Mychal Bell, who has been tried as an adult when he is a child, who has been in jail for almost a year to move on? Do you question Cinco de Mayo? Hispanic Heritage Month? Green Day? Asian Pacific Month? Chinese New Year? The Gay Parade?

The first step to healing is to stop the abuse. When Black people are continually being treated unfairly, blamed for the N word misunderstood, held under a microscope and be subjected to people who have ignorant paradigms such as Adrienne Curry it is difficult to just get over it. Give Black people a break. They, we have been through enough……but again the fight to peacefully educate continues….

dumb racist white piece of trash.

One soul is not equal to another. One person is born to be president. Another is born to be playboy actress. How is that equal? The least in the kingdom of heaven will be greater than John the baptist. In other words, John the baptist although greater than most people was not great enough to make it to the kingdom of heaven. Stop worrying about equality. Praise the Lord! Halleluya!

I am always amazed how people find the time to read and comment on things they claim not to care about.. Why did any of you who feel Adri’s views are meaningless even bother to come here and then post a mean comment???.. It shows something not about HER but about YOU!.. Think about it and PLEASE.. just…

I think everyone on here who is so damn ignorant that they can’t honestly see that she is right on the mark is an idiot who is probably black and expect a handout and live on the past.

She doesn’t seem to understand that along with the horrors of slavery there are other reasons Black -Americans feel as they do. For one thing, our families during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s continued to be treated unjustly in their own country. This attitude was insidious and based solely upon one thing, race…the color of one’s skin. Prior to the 1960s, the Supreme Court had determined that segregation was an accepted policy and condition in which to live, instead of being viewed as immoral and unjust. Unless you have walked in my shoes, it’s impossible for you to understand what I feel. Adrianne has not walked in mine as a young Black-American woman, therefore, she can never comprehend what I experience on a daily basis. Although I may not know first hand the suffering of my African ancestors, I do know what my grandparents had to deal with as they attempted to educate their children and maintain gainful employment during this time in our history. Just like Jews, it’s important for Black -Americans not to forget the abuse and atrocities that happened in this country, so we can learn from them. This was passed down to me and my siblings and we will continue the family legacy with future generations.

As a teacher, I celebrate Black History Month, White History Month( the only history taught on a daily basis from the curriculum) Latino Awareness Month, Asia Awareness Month, and any other ethnic group I may have in my classroom. Although I may understand vaguely Adrianne’s premise of one America, I find it imperative that we celebrate and embrace our differences instead of pretending they don’t exist.

Since only one racial group was mentioned in her post, I thought a little exposure to some of the other educational opportunities being offered, could broaden her personal knowledge base. Scholarships and educational opportunities exist for dozens of ethnic groups not just Black-American students:

Albanian, Creole, and Manchurian Fund
Japanese American Citizens League
La Unidad Latina Foundation
The Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund
Scholarships through the McDonald’s Hispanic American Commitment to Education
Big corporations like Microsoft also award ethnic scholarships
Xerox awards the Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship
McDonald’s provides scholarships through the McDonald’s Hispanic American Commitment to Education Resources.
Check with regional or national offices of churches. The United Methodist Church provides Ethnic Scholarships each year
Asian American Journalists Association Scholarship
Minority Geoscience Student Scholarship
National Society of Black Engineers
Financial Aid for Native American Students
Laguna Education Foundation (Native American)

It would help in the future if Adrianne researched her topic, so she doesn’t look so ill-informed and uneducated.

sweet southern home @ 02/28/2009 at 11:16 pm

Finally someone speaks out about it from the other races point of view. What about a white history month, Indian history month, hell why now chinese history month. We DO need to get rid of black history month.
