OlderBrad Pitt Softbank Commercials
Here are two of Brad Pitt’s commercials for Japanese cell phone company Softbank, as directed by Wong Kar Wai (My Blueberry Nights). These scenes were shot back in late June while the Jolie-Pitts were in Prague, Czech Republic.
Pictures from the first commercial (gray suit) can be seen here and from the second commercial (black suit) here. A cover of The Kinks‘ “You Really Got Me” is played in the second one, FYI.
The third commercial (white suit) has yet to surface but pictures can be seen here. Bummer because that one looked the most exciting! Let’s hope that one is released soon –

French school drop off alert! My husband saw the JP SUV come out of the driveway as he passed to go sit in his car for alternate sides. Tinted windows, so he couldn’t see anything, and the car was on the way out!
Since there weren’t any drop off photos from Friday, it may be that the JP’s have found a better way to bring their son to school! Using the driveway with pap access denied. :)

Brad is good as always but both commercials tell no story and make no sense. The purpose of any commercial should be to persuade you that this is a very good product surpassing those of the competition. What do you learn about that? Nothing, except that just because Brad carries it around, it is supposed to be the best. Sorry, that’s a flop to me.

A few months ago US Lies Weakly had a little story on celeb endorsements and they had some ad exec talking about how much the deals were worth. So natch they decided to compare X’s DumbWater deal to Brad’s Softbank contract. The guy said X’s DumbWater deal made sense because she probably drinks lots of water…but that Brad was ONLY doing the Softbank commercials for dough because Softbank wasn’t available in the US, but it was highly popular in Europe where Brad has a really large fan base and was seeking to cash in on his popularity.
Needless to say I was ROTFLMAO. With as much time as the J-Ps spend abroad, Brad pitching Softbank makes more sense than X pitching for a company that produces one of the Earth’s biggest causes of pollution - BOTTLED WATER. Beeyotch can drink tap water just like the rest of us.
Anyhoo - the US Lies Weakly story said Brad got $4MIL per year on his 3 year Softbank deal.

Yep! And although I’ve seen those published reports of 18k I’m pretty sure it’s more. Well, maybe kindergarten starts there, but I bet tuition goes up pretty fast in the other grades, cause most of the independent schools are, by high school, over $35k a year!
I don’t know how the french school financial/aid scholarship works, but other schools are using a combination of things to determine eligibility. (I’ve got one son who’s graduated out of the private school system and another a senior in high school, so I’ve been through the application thing bigtime!!) I can’t imagine how any homeowner in Manhattan, with children especially, have an apartment under 200k. It’s not even possible to get a studio for that. I’m sure your husband will check out the specifics while he’s there. You may end up being pleasantly surprised that the details of eligibility are more favorable~!

Yes I am looking forward to see what my hubby finds out about the scholarship. Indeed French gov. $200k cut-off is ridiculous in Manhattan. Hubby says the new President (Sarkozy) is very interested in ’spreading’ the French influence overseas, so he might change the law to some extent regarding education for citizens abroad. One serious consideration is that my hubby is dead-set for the kids speaking French. He sometimes threatens to move the family to Paris (and I fight for New York :) But never know….

Just taking a course in marketing is NOT enough to make any good business decision. You need to take into many things into consideration. Factors like age, interest, income , looks and most important KNOW THE CULTURE if you’re selling anything overseas.
The target audience is Japanese. Please understand the Asian culture before you opened your mouth. The Asian likes name brand, that’s why Gucci, LV, Chanel, Cartier, Tiffany, and all those brand names sell well. Victoria Secret doesnt sell well because people dont want to pay a lot of money for underwear (things which Asian people cant SHOW OFF in the public).
Softbank is smart. They hired Brad Pitt to film this commercial. He is a recognizable name in Japan. He’s good looking. So, anything he uses or does sells !!! If he carries that brand, all Japanese (or most of them) will flock to that brand, period !!!

#119: If it’s a whole series of ads, then there might be a story line to it that we are not aware of from the beginning. Only the Japanese, their intended market wil be able to follow.
It’s like turning on the TV where you don’t know the title or the story line. They use Brad as the subject of the story line and the phone as the accessory on hand. Probably a must have for every busy Japanese and Brad was someone who has to get somewhere fast and is talking t somebody to say he’ll be late. IDK, just my take on the whole scene.
We should ask konnitiwa or somebody else who lives in Japan and is familiar with the commercial. At least, Angie’s was easier to decipher…buy Shiseido to look good like her!

Hi AddictedtoBAMPZs….I’m not sure if you read my additional post last night from the other thread….here it is, as promised….
Finally got home from a late dinner….So to continue my precis of the movie TAOJJ….
Now, about the TAOJJ movie - as a whole. the movie was beautifully done. Each character (small or big) was very memorable, even Sam Sheppard’s character whose scenes was miniscule. The panoramic shots were stunning - similar style from chineses epic movies like Hero or House of Flying Daggers ((by Yimou Zhang - a chinese director). Every scenes were very poignant and unpredictable because it reflects the personality of Jesse James himself - precarious and erratic. It was a pure aesthetic experience for me to watch this movie, that I didn’t even notice the running time. I was just totally mesmerized from the stunning visual presentation and the story telling style.
As for the actors:
Brad Pitt’s acting was very poetic - you can almost feel and hear what goes through the mind of Jesse James through his eyes, even without saying a word. The characater Jesse James is quite fascinating that I can literally write a hundred page analysis of his psyche. Severe symptoms of acute depression was so palpable in Jesse James character which Brad gave tremendous justice portraying it - totally sublime !!!….
Casey Affleck - brilliant acting. Again, his acting was so profound, that you can feel the fear and the anxiety he goes through in the character (you can almost touch the ambivalence of emotions that he portrayed).
Sam Rockwell - another great actor that I admire so greatly. His character in the movie was so heartbreaking - Another brilliant acting….
The rest of the casts were all very good which contributed to the whole success of this movie…..
The rest is for everyone to really see the movie when they do a wide opening after next week - it is certainly a must…..
who cares what the “storyline” is..it’s BRAD PITT..just sit back and enjoy!!!

WORTH POSTING AGAIN
This isn’t really a review; consider it a breathless, extemporaneous appreciation. I saw The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford a few hours ago and it doesn’t feel like something to sit down and matter-of-factly dissect. God, it’s a majestic accomplishment. Hard to remember the last time a film had me so deeply in its reality. Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy did it; so did Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia and, to a lesser extent, Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream and Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men. (All great films, all very different from Assassination; I’m only comparing the effect.) I saw each of those three or four times in the theater and the same will probably end up being true of Andrew Dominik’s film.
I experienced Assassination in my skin and my blood and my bones. It’s such a powerful piece of art… spooky, absolutely beautiful, and so richly put together. From the trailer and early reviews I expected a tone poem, something lovely to look at but not necessarily affecting in any profound sense–like Terrence Malick’s The New World, with its mumbling and utterly inscrutable characters framed by gorgeous forest–so what initially startled me was the genuine humor and deftness of Dominik’s script (and of Ron Hansen’s dialogue–Hansen wrote the novel). Every character is achingly human and distinguished with care, given dignity and pettiness and strange quirks and spotlit moments.
There are so many perfect things in this film, large and small: The train robbery at the beginning… the sight of Jesse James toying with serpents in his back yard… the glimpse of fish beneath the ice… **** Liddell seducing his friend’s stepmother… the horrific forced laughter after Jesse pretends he’s going to slit Bob Ford’s throat… the moment of Jesse’s murder, which is just as much a suicide…
And everyone involved has done an astonishing job. No slack. Every actor (including Sam Shepherd as Frank James, Paul Schneider as **** Liddell, Sam Rockwell as Charley Ford, and Ted Levine–Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, amusingly enough–as a lawman) has got it exactly. Even James Carville. Dominik must be a directing genius to have gotten performances this uniformly excellent out of his cast. And Roger Deakins’ cinematography is otherworldly; I’ve never seen another movie that looked like this. And Warren Ellis and Nick Cave’s score got into me like heroin. And–
Enough, I’ll stop already. Suffice to say I loved this movie more than any I’ve seen in a very long time. Will you? Maybe. Maybe not. It doesn’t seem to have been universally appreciated. But there have certainly been others–this guy, for example–who felt as strongly as I did. Devin Faraci, maybe the best movie critic on the internet, apparently also loved it so much he’s having trouble writing a “review”. So did one or two others. Like Magnolia and Oldboy and 2001 and Days of Heaven–it’s an idiosyncratic taste. It meanders (perfectly, mesmerizingly) and digresses and draws moments out, and some people will just be bored (fair enough) and others will call it pretentious (many of these people will be ignorant) and that’s that. So it’s definitely not a movie I’ll be recommending to every person I know. Only to select ones.
On the other hand, it appears I won’t be able to stop myself from telling everyone about it.

The 2 most important things that Softbank wants to convey is

Hi Coal - yes, the panoramic scenery was fantastic - The director kinda used it as a metaphor of the emotional ambivalence of every character on a particular scene - very clever….
I was very surprised of the running time - which didn’t bother me at all. Although, I have seen films that were slower and longer than this, like Werner Herzogs films (the pace are usually slow - and the characters barely talk), so I’m used to watching this kind of films….
As I mentioned from the last thread - I’m was really hesitant to see the film because of my allegies - but, I have to give props to the wonders of medication (thanks to the miracle of the pharmaceutical companies - poisonous as maybe, but it does help when the right time comes….)

Gotta love pharmaceuticals - most in my family suffer from allergies, so I feel your pain!!
I think they have even mentioned in some of the press interviews that the scenery is like a character all on its own… and some of the reviews too. The weather in that area is really crazy because of the mountains so it’s great that they worked with it, and used it to highlight different moments, rather than around it.
I was driving out there a few years ago to visit family - August long weekend and there was a snowfall warning, if you can imagine. I was freezing for 4 days, and then by the end of the week it was 30 above.
I can also remember waking up scared when I was little from the huge thunderstorm/lightning storms we would have, and loving the ’sun showers’ in the summer that would create the biggest rainbows. It’s a lovely part of the world and I am so glad they enjoyed their time there :D
I love long, complex films (even better with subtitles) but I know they are not for everyone. While some want to peg their current films as being unsuccessful (no names mentioned ;-)) the reality is that because Brad and Angie are so successful as actors they now have the luxury of being able to make a few films that are a true labour of love and cater to a more sophisticated audience, rather than the masses.

#152: angel, I think most critics act on their own personal feelings about the movie they are reviewing and expect movie goers to feel the same. They are surprised and insulted when their pick doesn’t do well or is ignored by judges like with TAOJJ. Their pick at Cannes were all about the war or related to it and Brad’s film was just not in their agenda at that time. I think (just my opinion anyway) also like to mostly pick obscure stars (like Casey Affleck) to give awards to rather than the well known either to give them a real boost or just to show the big stars that they’re not all that in Cannes.
I will look up the total gross just because it is curious why AMH was just pounded while this movie got a pass.

Indeed - TAOJJ is such a labor of love for the Jolie-Pitt, especially that when they filmed this movie, it was during the time Angelina was on her early pregnancy, and the public is totally clueless about it - only then, I think, their experience in that little cottage was pure bliss…
I understand that the Clinton Foundation is hosting an event for their Global initiatives, and I believe Angelina and Brad are going to be there. Just on the side, the CEO of the Clinton’s Foundation on the Global Initiative - is actually the Chairman of the Board of our organization. He is a young married man (56 yrs. old) - who made money as one of the powerhouse broker (Mergers and Acquisition) in Wall Street. I’m hoping to get a job at the Clinton Foundation….
By the way, how is your autumn weather so far? It rained here in NY last Saturday - but then yesterday was really nice. Both Brad and Angelina are presenters at the Clinton Initiaitve this Wednesday representing their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, Brad is early afternoon and Angelina is later in the day.
Well, now I know why My Blueberry Nights was never pounded. Although it received a rate of 60% from Rotten Tomatoes, the box office take was zero so I guess it was never shown in any theater here in the US. Budget was only $10 million although it had stars like Jude Law, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman, David Strathain, Norah Jones, etc.
Did it go straight to video?
How bad can it be when it was shelved just like that after a big premiere at Cannes?

Yes I agree…. artists make movies, then they have to sell it to sustain themselves, thus enter the businessmen-studios. So, a 4.5hr version which would make the most artistic sense to the film makers and actors cannot be commercially viable—it really is too bad, but that’s life. Indeed if they release DVD of that version it would be great. People still need to go do things, go eat etc. but DVD you can start/stop, see the rest the next day if you must etc….

Yes. I’m glad they managed to find a way to avoid all this. Sometimes they just have to go through it. At least 100 people and 20 paps where waiting for them out of the school gate every day.
But as you said I’m sure that the paps will soon find a way to get a pic but they are not allowed to take picture from the other entrance because it’s at the driveway side. At least if they’ll get pictures they will keep some distance.

I went to see Brad’s movie on friday night, the weather was perfect for our movie night, it was pouring rain with thunder and lightning from the distant. All of the showing was sold out, it was pack. The people in line were mostly mature audience, a few young teenager.
Ok, I really really love this movie, the cinemaphotography is stunning, the music is chilling and the acting are brilliant. I swear Brad’s eyes,( thanks to Rica, that was my concentration for most of the movie..LOL) the window to his tormented soul, so haunting. It’s slow from time to time, but the movie will suck you in. You will feel like you part of Jesse James agony paranoid state. You feel like you are there in the room with them, the tension, the mistrust…..you know that he has to died and yet you want him to survive in the end.
Casey is awesome, his slimmy whinny voice and his lazy eyes, something you can’t trust about him. His struggling with his obsession with Jesse James and his craving for fame.
Any how, just a few words to say hello and giving you a little bit of my experience after watching this movie.
Gosh darn, I missed the commercial,I know it had to be hot though, Congrads to you fans who got to see it.

Hi to All JP fans. I knew they were going to have to work out something different for taking Maddox to school. As the word got out there was going to come a day when 1,000 people were hanging around the school waiting for their glimpse of the JP’s. Then 2,000. Then 3,000 and on and on. I really feel sorry for them when it comes to the paps. As if they court that kind of insanity. But then I’m just dying for some new snaps of the kids. That makes me a part of the problem!
Someone was saying they should go to San Francisco as there are no paps there. Ha! There would be if the JP’s went there.
All these reviews from fans about TAOJJ is awesome. I can just picture it. Love it when a movie is not just a good story and wonderful stars but haunting background too. It just sort of makes your viewing complete (with the sounds, i’s a bonus!). Looking forward to watching it at my neighborhood theater on Oct. 5th. Completely missed AMH cause I dawdled too long. When it was time for us to go, it was gone. Will just buy the DVD when it comes out. Hope that helps with the numbers (maybe they’ll make a nice Christmas stocking stuffer too for the grownups).

No. PT is far too lazy to create fan sites for free. I’d be like that chick who has Pitt Impressions - I’d update it for a while and then I’d get bored and stop. I don’t know why she stopped updating…but burnout, boredom and laziness would do me in. That’s why the Tabloid Report is MIA! LOL!
Like I said I was bored at lunch and no one seems to talk to me, so I went over to X’s thread. They were saying that she gained weight because she quit using “happy”. The crew had to add some layers to her dress, especially around the tummy area due to recent weight gain. They didn’t say she is preggers though. Thank God for that. They were still saying what a cute couple she and Ben make. I didn’t stay very long though.

The driveway is just east of both the 75th and 76th street entrances — it passes through the school, partially covered and gated. It’s like a small, mid-block street with an entrance to the school in the middle.
You can look in as you walk by on either street — I have to pass it to get to my own house on this dead end block. Sometimes the children use this area for recess or play time. Only vary rarely, in the past, would you see any actual traffic in there - usually deliveries off hours or something like that, trucks, etc.
From what I can tell they are putting the barriers up to prevent people from getting on the sidewalk when the car comes through, so there’s no place to look through the driveway. I suppose you could go across the street, but the car’s been coming in escorted and the door opens right by the school door. Just a step or so away.
I haven’t actually been out there to see how they’re blocking the paps at the exact second the JP’s arrive, but whatever they are doing, it must be working.
btw, lots of that crowd in front of the school was parents and students and nannies of the younger students themselves!
It’s totally wild because the kids of every celebrity and superstar in Manhattan go to one school or another, and I’ve never head of a single school where paparazzi and fans camp out at the door. It’s like the JP’s are the Beatles or something. LOL

The thing that probably motivates the door watchers is that if you don’t see Angie, you see Brad and lucky you if they are both taking Mad to school. You’ve hit the jackpot if you see all the kids with both parents in one go.

#152: angel, I think most critics act on their own personal feelings about the movie they are reviewing and expect movie goers to feel the same. They are surprised and insulted when their pick doesn’t do well or is ignored by judges like with TAOJJ. Their pick at Cannes were all about the war or related to it and Brad’s film was just not in their agenda at that time. I think (just my opinion anyway) also like to mostly pick obscure stars (like Casey Affleck) to give awards to rather than the well known either to give them a real boost or just to show the big stars that they’re not all that in Cannes

Besane, I’m with hubby. Send in your application, request scholarship assistance, and keep your fingers crossed. The Lycée is one of the best schools in the country and their academics are top notch. Even if you have to scrimp and save, it’s worth it. Your child will get into an excellent college after finishing the Lycée. I sent my son to a private school because the public schools in NYC are godawful. It was a sacrifice, but it’s probably the reason why he graduated from an excellent liberal arts college, has a masters degree from Cornell and is working on his Ph.D while he teaches college in California. Some sacrifices are worth the money.

Some long time fans are leaving JJ for JJB which is understandable because over the past few weeks, this site has become unbearable to read. There are more posts from non fans than fans. It is so easier to blame JJ for the destruction of this site or the non fans, when in actuality; the FANS should take responsibility for what is happening to this once great site. Some of the fans enjoy responding to the trolls, they take pride knowing they insult someone or the X and love the fact that they are being patted on the back by other fans, it feeds their egos.
Ignoring the trolls is not that difficult, I have yet to see MF answering any of the trolls. Point in case if someone posts something as absurd as “Brad will go back to Jen when Shiloh is two” why validates that poster? Clearly, the poster is trying to engage the fans, true to form; there will be pages of FANS answering to this poster.
The only solution is for each fan to take responsibility to make this site what it once was. Don’t blame JJ, he has been really good to the JP fans. Some of the fans are the ones creating havoc on this thread by feeling the need to rebut the each and every hater’s posts.

hello ladies, just a quick hello, as i am getting ready to leave work. has anyone heard anything of the BO for JJ as yet/ sorry i haven’t read the reat of the thread as yet, so if it has already been mentioned, please forgive me. i have been making a concerted effort to see as many of brad’s and angie’s filmns as possible. thank god for netflix, lol. i saw babel last week and still cannot understand how that film did not win. this week i saw original sin, and all i can say is “wow”. that is one of the sexiest films i have seen, other than M&MS OF COURSE. i also made note of angies size in that movie, and she was just as small if not smaller. i think because she was not as much on the public radar, or probably they just didn’t care, that is why no one commented then. but now, to try to bring her down because of all these jealous females insecurities, you get the incessant talks about her weight. anywho, gotta run. until tomorrow, have a nice night.

THAM HIN REFUGEE CAMP, Thailand (UNHCR) – In Thailand refugee toddlers get a pre-school headstart on education and teenagers learn vital computer skills. In Azerbaijan refugee children have new playgrounds and learn to swim. In Uganda, thousands of refugee children are getting text books for the first time.
The unifying reason in these countries, together with help provided in Kenya, Liberia and Chad, is the funds raised through the ninemillion programme to help children driven from their homes by conflict and violence. The progamme is about to grow – with a goal of enhancing education for nine million children by 2010.
UN High Commissioner for Refugee António Guterres and UNHCR’s Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie will join former US president Bill Clinton at the September 26-28 meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, issuing a call to raise $220 million for refugee education. The CGI aims to inspire commitments of help from its members.
The UNHCR programme is aimed at providing Education (Plus) – education beyond the existing schooling now offered by UNHCR – to nine million refugee children by 2010. Education (Plus) will provide resources to develop a child’s full potential, with an emphasis on girls’ participation and additional activities like life-skills training, sport programs, disease prevention and access to technology.
Started in 2006, ninemillion has so far raised over US$ 2 million. These funds are already allocated to education and sport programmes in Thailand, Azerbaijan and Uganda. New projects are on the way.
The efforts of ninemillion are shifting towards improving education in three conflict zones around the world – Colombia, Iraq’s neighbours and Sudan’s Darfur region with its spillover into Chad. The potential benefits can be seen in places where extra UNHCR education assistance has already been provided.
Growing up in a refugee camp in Thailand, Aye Hla’s first three children didn’t have a chance to study beyond Grade Six. But she has higher hopes for her youngest son, Lweh Say, whom she cuddles in her lap on the floor of a new nursery school.
“I hope he can be an educated person, and this is a good start,” she says, gesturing around the large airy thatched building built and equipped with funds from the UNHCR-led ninemillion initiative. Thanks to the money raised for education and sports, refugee toddlers in Thailand are getting a pre-school head start, and refugee teenagers are learning vital computer skills.
In Azerbaijan, children of refugees and internally displaced people have learned to swim and to make healthy choices in life. New playgrounds have given 30,000 children a safe and fun place to play. In Uganda, thousands of refugee children are getting their own textbooks and school supplies for the first time, and teachers are getting real blackboards for desperately ill-equipped classrooms.
The conflict that Lweh Say’s ethnic Karen parents fled in Myanmar has been simmering for nearly six decades. But in Tham Hin refugee camp along the Thai-Myanmar border, his family is getting a chance for a brighter future: They are among thousands being considered for resettlement to the United States.
“The headstart he’s getting here will help him when we get to America,” says Aye Hla, referring to the nursery school’s “play and learning space”, which supports creative learning through special toys.
At a new computer centre that complements the normal curriculum for older children, ninemillion supplied the electricity to run the computers, and lessons are limited to 20 minutes each because there are so few computers.
Even so, enthusiastic students whizz through the basic English needed to follow the lessons and have learned to type. Some are even mastering Microsoft’s Powerpoint presentations. “I know my future will be good if I get a computer education,” says a confident 15-year-old girl named Naw Say Paw. “I know the computer is used all over the world.”
These serious issues of education will be discussed when Guterres and Jolie attend the deliberations of the CGI in New York, hoping to draw commitments of assistance from the influential participants.

Angelina Jolie delivers the first leading performance which should be guaranteed a nomination next February. It’s a stunning, sensitive portrayal from a much-maligned actress which deserves to be admired as much for its restraint as it is for its anguish.
But this is very much Angelina Jolie’s movie. The story is told from her point of view and she is absorbed by the role. There’s no big, Hollywood movie star on display here. Her French/English accent is beautifully pitched. It sounds exotic but without being so outrageous that it seems ridiculous.
Is she really that brave? She is really that driven? Is she really that forgiving? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out but it is a startling performance from Angelina Jolie and it will take a lot for someone to whip away a second Oscar from under the actress’s nose.

Brad Pitt’s new film ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ doesn’t deviate much from Ron Hansen’s book.

CUPERTINO, CALIF. — HE’S just off a plane from the New York premiere of “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” adapted from his novel of the same name, and the reviews have been decidedly mixed, but Ron Hansen seems unperturbed.
With his shock of white hair, short-sleeved blue sports shirt and casual slacks, Hansen looks more like a mid-level Silicon Valley executive than a stereotypically macho literary poseur as he greets a visitor to the well-appointed but unassuming suburban two-story California ranch house he shares with his wife, writer Bo Caldwell, as their English Labrador, Maggie, moseys around the kitchen.
Although there was a protracted struggle between director Andrew Dominik and the studio over edits of the movie, which clocks in at a challenging 2 hours and 40 minutes, “I think he [Dominik] is pretty comfortable in his skin” about the ultimate product, Hansen said.
So is the author. “I like the movie a lot. He had such reverence — or fidelity, at least — to my words that I couldn’t help but love it.”
Almost all the film is taken verbatim from Hansen’s treatment of the complex relationship between James, played by Brad Pitt, who also produced the film, and his assassin, portrayed by Casey Affleck.
“When Bob Ford first goes to see Frank James (Sam Shepard), they cut away to the other three outlaws doing an improv, but that’s the only part not as it was written,” said Hansen, who previously adapted one of his other novels, “Mariette in Ecstasy” for the screen (it was released only in DVD because of financial problems at the studio). “Even the action sequences were taken right out of the book.”
A Nebraska native, Hansen wrote his first novel, “Desperadoes,” about the Dalton Gang, who “set out to imitate everything the James-Younger gang had done, including getting wiped out trying to rob two banks at the same time,” he said. “While researching that, I learned a lot about Jesse James and Robert Ford and realized that no one had really told their story. In almost every movie, Ford shows up, he’s kind of a weasel and shoots Jesse for the reward money. But it wasn’t just betrayal. Jesse really did force Ford’s hand in some ways. Ford really admired Jesse James for a long time, and was an expert who’d read everything about him.
“About the time I was writing this, there were also a number of assassination attempts . . . Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley. Then John Lennon. I was thinking about the extent to which assassins really admire, even emulate, the people they shoot.”
Was Hansen seduced by the Jesse James legend, even while painting a broader portrait?
“Inevitably, when you write about somebody, you grow somewhat sympathetic, at least you understand them as a physician might understand a disease,” he said. “Jesse was probably as much beyond hope as Hitler, who I’ve also written about (in the novel, “Hitler’s Niece”), although nowhere near as violent or monstrous. The formative experiences of his life were as a guerrilla in the Civil War. He was not a Confederate soldier, he was just a guy who raided and killed people in the Northern Confederacy. A lot of people are formed by war, but there’s something about the discipline of being in a military uniform that makes it easier to return to civilian life later on. If you’re always an outlaw, you still need that adrenaline rush.”
One murky area is why James turned his back on Bob Ford, whom he suspected of being a traitor. Was James committing suicide?
“I thought it was more that he was a guy who liked to live on the edge,” Hansen said. “He was taking off his guns but at the same time, it was like, ‘OK, take me now, but if you don’t, then I am perfectly free to kill you.’ ”
“Dialogue is what characters do to each other,” Hansen said, addressing the almost Pinteresque level of violence and suspicions in the scenes between James and Ford leading up to the killing. “People are never really responding to what’s just been said but the subtext. That was clearly true in Jesse’s conversations. He acted like a hail fellow well met, but actually he was manipulating people.”
Although commercial expectations for the film, which opened in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto on Friday and will eventually go into wider release, are modest, given its length and dark approach, Hansen is encouraged by the recent success of films like “3:10 to Yuma” and the attention to the new movie.
“When this book first came out, Jamie Foley and I went around to a lot of studios pitching it,” he said. “One guy put it very clearly: ‘We’re not interested in horses and dust.’ But the western is a very resilient form — every time they try to kill it, something like ‘Unforgiven’ comes along.”
Hansen, 59, has been the Gerard Manley Hopkins professor of arts and humanities at Santa Clara University since 1996 (his new novel, “Exiles,” about Hopkins and the writing of “The Wreck of the Deutschland” will be published in May).
But the seemingly unlikely transition between the worlds of the glitterati and writing or teaching responsibilities is not as tough as it seems. “It’s like changing channels on television,” he said. “You’re watching MTV one minute, the Golf Channel the next.”

Thanks for all your opinion and support. It seems to be the case—my hubby and I are both foreigners and are quite surprised this seems to be the case here in the US. In order to get into an excellent college, you have to give them a private primary education no matter what is the cost. We met a very nice young boy once, a UC Berkeley student obviously from an affluent family–he said, “I feel like I went to private schools all my life, so that I could get into a public university!”.

Yeah, so my hubby asked the Embassy. The rule is that if you own an apartment valued more than $200k, no matter how completely mortgaged (like us!), you aren’t eligible for this support. If you are renting, not owning, you maybe eligible. In Manhattan, it’s not realistic that we would get any support…. But I had a long talk with hubby tonight and looks like we will apply anyway. The point is that they would allow kindergarten kids NOT speaking French fluently, but later on it would be prerequisit. My son sometimes breaks into French, but far from being fluent–BTW he turns 4 this Sunday :)

Angelina Jolie delivers the first leading performance which should be guaranteed a nomination next February. It’s a stunning, sensitive portrayal from a much-maligned actress which deserves to be admired as much for its restraint as it is for its anguish.
But this is very much Angelina Jolie’s movie. The story is told from her point of view and she is absorbed by the role. There’s no big, Hollywood movie star on display here. Her French/English accent is beautifully pitched. It sounds exotic but without being so outrageous that it seems ridiculous.
Is she really that brave? She is really that driven? Is she really that forgiving? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out but it is a startling performance from Angelina Jolie and it will take a lot for someone to whip away a second Oscar from under the actress’s nose.

The media talk about break up every single week i don’t see how this is any different. They would claim they are breaking up even if they had pics of them with their tongues down each others throat. I am so happy for Mad that they now have an alternate way into and out of the school. I am sure that the bodyguard calls the school to open the gate then they drive in and Mad gets out and walks a few steps to the door in peace. The paps now can’t follow the family and they are able to move about NYC with some degree of privacy.
Thanks to those who gave the info re the privacy that Mad now enjoys going to and being picked up from school.
