Ben Affleck: Jennifer Lopez Killed My Career

Boston boy Ben Affleck is the November 2007 cover boy for Details Magazine. He pimps the crime thriller Gone Baby Gone adapted and directed by himself. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On dating Jennifer Lopez: “It was probably bad for my career. What happens is this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work. You go to a movie, you only go once. But the tabloids and Internet are everywhere. You can really subsume the public image of somebody. I ended up in an unfortunate crosshair position where I was in a relationship and [the media] mostly lied and inflated a bunch of salacious stuff for the sake of selling magazines. And I paid a certain price for that. Then, in concert with some movies that didn’t work…”

On Gone Baby Gone: “I feel like (Gone Baby Gone) is the linchpin for my life. My career. I have a lot riding on it. I want [the film] to work. Badly. I mean, a shitty movie comes out on 2,800 screens? I’ve been there and it’s embarrassing.”

On why he likes directing: “That’s why there’s something really great about directing-about having authorship over something. If you don’t like this movie, I’m the guy to see. I’m the guy to criticize. I take some measure of comfort in that. It’s fair, at least.”

On his directorial debut: “Listen, I’ve gone out and directed a movie and made it really f—king good. If the movie’s good, people will like it and go see it. All the rest of it is bullshit.”

On what’s at stake with his new film: “It’s pretty simple. If people don’t go see it – I’m f—ked.”

On his decision to direct: “I guess I just thought, I’ve seen it done enough. I’ve been on the sets enough. I’m a writer. An amateur photographer. An actor. I guess I just thought the sum of these parts would come together and I’d be able to do it.”

On living in L.A.: “I’d be surprised if I’m still living here in a couple of years. Professionally it would be difficult. But that’s not as important as that other thing.”

Gone Baby Gone is out in theaters nationwide on October 26. Read Ben’s full interview with Details Magazine here.

The truth hurts doesn’***?

Ben started the topic bymentioning the JenLo thing. He could have easily said no comment and moved on just like Jenlo does. She has clearly moved on but Benloser likes to take jabs at what was once his claim to fame. cause B4 that he was clearly an ambitious playboy looking to lay the popular actresses. If it were not for the fact that Jen part deux got preggers she would have also been anotch on his bed post. The facts are there.. his history is soplain to see and you would think that with age he would learn to be less petty and more mature.
next time Ben try using the “No comment” clause.. that way you get to keep what little fans you have left and get some one to see a movie of yours.

Too bad.. this is gonna affect your “gone Baby gone” movie.. I was going to see it till I read this.. now you can count me and my friends out..

I believe “just a thought” you failed to answer the previous poster’s question as to why a hater like you keeps returning to a topic of no interest for you. I find that most puzzling.

I find this article to be slanderous since Ben Affleck has not at all ever denounced Jennifer Lopez. He instead said that the relationship hurt his career. He never said she killed him. It’s not even implied because he has respect for her (referencing an article from the Variety).

I believe most recently Ben had answered this question for the Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-ca-affleck14oct14,1,7482910.story?track=rss)

“Even just last week he found himself being quoted in the tabloids — falsely he says — complaining that Lopez had “hurt his career.” Affleck, who is now married to actress Jennifer Garner, argues that “surely there are other things more important in the world, such as poverty in America, the fact that New Orleans hasn’t been rebuilt, my movie, the Red Sox getting back to the World Series.” As for the quote in question, it “not only makes me look like a petulant fool, but it surely qualifies as ungentlemanly. For the record, did she hurt my career? No.”

And “just a thought” I doubt you would have even paid to watch his movie in the first place. I’ve no clue why you’re trying to be diplomatic in your words since from your first post, you’ve been calling Ben a loser.

As for Jennifer Lopez when the press asked her about Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck expecting their first child, Jennifer Lopez answered swiftly, “the whole thing depresses me.”

There’s no real looking into that because it’s understood that the answer is clearly about the attention the relationship recieved. It’s people like you who happen to look too deep into things and then turn them around and send out hate and mixed messages out into this media/tabloid driven world of ours.

You don’t want to watch his movie, fine. No one cares much what you think but I do want to know…so much as to why you keep returning to a topic of no interest to you.

Maybe you could join the debate club in your town or something.

Looks like Affleck did some damage control.

He should have sidestepped the question altogether. His brother later came out talking the same such nonsense.

But the problem was never that he mentioned the relationship hurt is career, the problem is that, that statement is far from the truth. Ben Affleck’s bad acting hurt his career, he needs to get over himself.

Check out this article written pre-J.LO in Time magazine, http://www.time.com/time/sampler/article/0,8599,127977,00.html

He was always considered a bad actor, the relationship with J.LO wasn’t what hurt him, it certainly didn’t help (his fan base was angry their lily white boy took up with a Puerto Rican and he says that in Rolling Stone himself) but he is trying to put the blame elsewhere when it lies with himself.

To #1: Duh, probably because he was answering the question asked by the person doing the interview! Jennifer Garner is way more attractive than Lopez AND Ben and Jennifer Garner in all the photos seem to be very happy together and their faces always light up when their precious daughter is in the pictures with them. #11, I suppose you KNOW Jennifer is “boring” because you know her, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck PERSONALLY. I’d bet an entire months salary you DO NOT KNOW these people personally. You also said “leave J-Lo alone, Ben. This is the reason she left you and let you go.” Yet AGAIN, you must know why she left Ben because, again, you are such a good personal friend of all 3 people. You obviously do NOT know any of these people, so you CANNOT speak for them.

sorry ben, you don’t seem to understand that the only thing that killed your acting career was your own acting, you could have a bad movie and still have some good acting. So don’t blame her for your past and present issues. And if you are so happy now, then why are you still talking about jen lopez, her career is just fine, and she is not stuck on you.

I totaly agree with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez was so so very anzious to make sure AMERICA ( especially latino’s) that she has snagged a WHITE, good lookign and talented man. Jen actually called Ben during a Dian Sawyer interview to show the world how “close” they are and todl Ben she will announce their engagement to teh world, tonight!! LOL, omg, how sad that Jen with her shrill voice, scary fake laugh she ALWAYS does, had to tel lteh owrld.
Ben went running for the hills adn …Ben, Jennifer Garner is a beautiful, quiet, humble, modest wife and I am so so grateful you married her. Much luck to you, jennifer and Violet!
Ben, you saved your life by not marrying the control freak jennifer lopez, she is simply awful, cant sing, certanly not act and her dancing is good however, that I say.
GOod luck ben, you are doing so well!
