OlderBrad Pitt Goes on ‘Parade’
Brad Pitt tells Parade that one thing that is certain are his kids, Maddox, 6, Pax, 3, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 16 months. Here are some snippets from his interview:
On his increasing doubt in religion as he got older: “I had crises of faith. I thought you had to experience things if you want to know right from wrong. I’d go to Christian revivals and be moved by the Holy Spirit, and I’d go to rock concerts and feel the same fervor. Then I’d be told, ‘That’s the Devil’s music! Don’t partake in that!’ I wanted to experience things religion said not to experience.”
On having scuttled his fundamentalist beliefs by the time he entered college: “When I got untethered from the comfort of religion, it wasn’t a loss of faith for me, it was a discovery of self,” he says. “I had faith that I’m capable enough to handle any situation. There’s peace in understanding that I have only one life, here and now, and I’m responsible.”
On his faith in his family: “What’s important to me is that I’ve defined my beliefs and lived according to them and not betrayed them. One of those is my belief in my family. I still have faith in that.”
On his early taste with fame: “When fame really hit me was when ‘Legends of the Fall’ was released. You get no warning about what celebrity is or how to deal with it. It’s sort of multitiered. The initial stage is feeling discombobulated and not up to the task. I didn’t understand the incessant attention when I went outside, the way people completely focused on me. It made me very uncomfortable. Then you start to see the fickleness of celebrity that it isn’t rooted in something of real value. There is this strange wanting by people to get next to you. It has nothing to do with you but with something they feel they are missing in themselves.”
On the crazy paparazzi: “I understand the tabloid machine. There’s money to be made off of Angie and me, but it has gotten so out-of-hand. There’s no decency, even when it comes to our kids. I mean, yesterday Angie was taking Maddie off to school. There were 30 paparazzi outside. One guy sticks a video camera in Mad’s face, yelling, ‘Maddox! Maddox!’ He doesn’t get a response. He doesn’t know my boy. Mad is already savvy to this, unfortunately. But my 2-year-old dreads being anyplace there are cameras. It scares her. They’re all in her face. My kids are faced with this every day! It’s disgusting. So we’ve been run out of L.A., all the major cities. We just can’t live there. You don’t understand–this is the hunt, the hunt, the hunt! I thought it might be over a year ago. It’s gotten worse.”

Happy Liberation Day, Brad!!!!
I was just on the mega post for Brad and Angelina and was watching the video of MAMS (page 754). I had never noticed, but when Brad races over to give Angie a hug or something , the producer stops him,lines him up for a picture and then when Brad turns his head to look at Angie, the producer takes his own hand that is behind Brad and turns Brad’s head back towards the picture. Brad had only one thing on his mind-Angie. Do you think they had seen each other between the premier and when he returned from Morocco ? Maybe someone can answer that question for me?
It’s amazing that they cope with this attention as well as they do. They’ve been very generous in sharing their family with us.

Thank you for seeing this the same way as I do. They are so rediculous with how they operate this manufactured family unit aka publicity machine. If he’s so worried about Zahara being scared of the cameras….how about they keep her away from situations that scare her…like THE CAMERAS? I probably had a crisis in my 30’s. I had a turbulent life (while married to his ex). Some of my movies flopped. My career suffered greatly.
Life is too short. I need life to be everything I want it to be. My ex and I decided to end the charade because we both want to lead meaningful lives. Together we cannot have purpose driven lives because we have divergent goals and different priorities in life. I respect the deep friendship we shared for seven years. Angelina is not the cause of the break-up of the farcical MERGER.
After meeting Angie, I became a NEW man, both intimately and artistically speaking. She is my great love, the mother of my kids and she means the world to me.
Angie and I are as much as in love as in the first day. I am totally committed to her. She is the only focus in my vision for the future.

All this fake concern cracks me up….all celebs take their kids out in the same matter as the JP’s but people like yourselfs don’t care to see those photos and that’s why we don’t see it all the time. This isn’t journalism and has nothing to do with fans, it’s harrasment and child abuse in the conduct of the media ! Pure and simple
There is clearly, at times a legal case that sustain that. Freedom of the press or certain dangerous behaviour has its limits ! You cannot come to someone and says that you are going to hurt him/her or sexualy abuse him/her or act accordingly so that the person feel threaten or discomfort because of your dangerou or agressive behaviour. The law protect that kind of behaviour. Hell, you cannot even says everything publicly or get closed to the president of the USA without the law protecting him. So how come such behaviour, even more agressive and indecent towards kids isn”t forbiden ? Some stranger coming close to a child, talking to him, over and over can be put on a restrain order to not approach the child if the parents take that to a court, especially if the child is emotionnally hurt and feel threaten and is scared to go out because of that. That’s pure harrasment and putting some little ones in danger.
The problem is not the fan, there, there are fans everywhere in the world but some countries have clearly defined what is considered as harrasment and have a stronger code of conduct when it comes to the children.
Once again, children rights and protection are not a priority in one of those advanced democracy. the press is protected even when it clearly hurt little ones and violate their private integrity.

I think he is a spiritual man. For him, as for many others, organized religion did not answer the questions in his heart. Why should one’s religion be better than others’, etc. Why can’t the wonderful people from other parts of the world with different beliefs and very good hearts wouldn’t be able to go to heaven just because they are not Christians, etc. I also think that he is still in search of something..that thing.. we are all searching for. For now, he seems to have found it in family. Good for him. Because no matter what heppens in his life his kids will always be his kids. All the changes an chances of this worlds won’t matter. He is there for them for life.
I think he is a good, decent man. He is fair and just. I don’t believe that he cheated on Jennifer as some suggested at the beginning. I think he does have a conscious. He is sensitive and genuinely trying to do good in this world. And, for the fanatic Jen fans aout there, give it up. Jennifer is totally OK with him. They are friends. No hard feelings. “I was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma,” he says. “My dad ran a trucking company. When I was a little kid we moved to Tulsa, then to St. Louis and, by the time I was in kindergarten, we lived in Springfield, Missouri. There I basically grew up. My father came from a very poor background, but I was very fortunate in the sense that we were never in need. My dad was determined to make sure that we didn’t want for things. He wanted to give us more opportunity than he had, a better shot at a better life. He did that for us.”
Brad Pitt has seen much of the world since leaving small-town Missouri for Los Angeles two decades ago, yet he seems to miss the boy he was and the place he left behind. Brad speaks with unusual warmth about his family and the region where he was raised.
“I had a very supportive family environment that gave me room to explore and discover things about myself,” he says. “When I was a boy I would ask about my family history, about my blood lines. We really didn’t know that much. We had a little Indian in us from the Oklahoma Trail of Tears. We were situated in southern Missouri, right along the Mason-Dixon Line, between the North and the South, where you have this confluence of different cultures-Texas and Oklahoma from the south, the hillbilly from the Appalachian range to the east, the Midwestern coming down from above. There was all these different influences and ideas and accents coming into this place.”
Brad begins to use various regional dialects to illustrate for me the variety of influences. “As I look around now I hear different accents, like Arkansas’, that are much more colorful,” he says in a soft, Clintonian drawl. “Then there’s Texas. You know Texas,” he twangs. “Then you get into Kentucky, and it sounds more like this…and then in St. Louis, where it’s a cleaner, more Midwestern accent. But where we were, southern Missouri, our accent is more flat-lined, it’s kind of like this… I find it very interesting now, but I didn’t realize how interesting the place I come from is until I left home and saw how other cultures handled things differently.”
On Leaving Home
I ask Brad about the pivotal influences on his 1986 decision to abruptly leave the University of Missouri before his graduation Surprisingly, he mentions a girlfriend but asks me not to use her name.
“You made me think about this girlfriend I had in senior year,” he recalls. “She was a Methodist preacher’s kid. She wasn’t that into me, truthfully, although we were together for a semester. ”
When I tell him I am the son of a preacher, too, he smiles and nods.
“Well,” he continues, “she was tough, man, although really cool. She had an older brother who was killed in a four-by-four accident, which was not uncommon out there.” He refers to a four-wheel drive crash. “She was a hardcore realist. She called me on so much bull-about any romantic ideas that I had grown up with about life. It was my first year in college.”
Brad studied journalism at the University of Missouri at Columbia, hoping for a career as an art director in advertising.
“She helped me more than anyone else as far as setting off in my own direction,” he explains. “It was my first year in college and I was pushing back against the religion thing. In my eyes it was a mechanism of guilt , this engrained system, used to keep the flock in servitude.” Brad was raised a conservative Southern Baptist. “Guilt is the thing I find most evil about it. It’s the thing I rail against the most. She helped me in defining what I believed.
“Religion works,” he goes on. “I know there’s comfort there, a crash pad. It’s something to explain the world and tell you there is something bigger than you, and it is going to be alright in the end. It works because it’s comforting. I grew up believing in it, and it worked for me in whatever my little personal high school crisis was, but it didn’t last for me. I didn’t understand this idea of a God who says, ‘You have to acknowledge me. You have to say that I’m the best, and then I’ll give you eternal happiness. If you won’t, then you don’t get it!’ It seemed to be about ego. I can’t see God operating from ego, so it made no sense to me.
“When I left Missouri I wasn’t ready to call it quits as far as getting out into the world,” he goes on. “It wasn’t leaving something behind, it was heading for something that was nascent and ill-defined. I did not know what it would be when I got to L.A., and to me not knowing that has always been the most exciting thing about making a trip.
On Seeing the World
“Seeing the world is the best education you can get,” Brad asserts. “You see sorrow, and you also see great spirit and will to survive. But you have to go off the beaten path of St. Bart’s Island, Rome, Paris, wander off the path and go beyond that. It is where you meet people and hear personal stories. It is a huge eye-opener. The extent of the numbers of people dying. You know, we forget this very simple truth: we’re basically all the same. There is so much focus on our differences. Again, this thing of ego-my high school is better than your high school! We forget that we all have the same feelings on any side of the world. Why can’t we find common ground instead of this obsession with our hatreds? I don’t want to be part of that hatred.”
On Movies
” Saturday Night Fever was a big influence on me,” he admits, grinning. “I snuck in to see it when I was underage. It wasn’t the dancing and the music I’m referring to, it was this culture of families who argued at the dinner table and popped each other in the face! It was this whole other way of people relating to each other that I found really interesting.”
Brad’s family was white-bread, straight-laced-undemonstrative, calm, private. He still has something of the nice, winsome, small town Southern boy to his character-he is polite, attentive, reluctant to brag on himself, with an easy, though not overly-familiar, charm. In person, he has the qualities of a popular high school heartthrob-handsome, friendly, correct, even sweet, yet out of reach.
“Films were a portal into different worlds for me,” he continues, “cultures I had never seen before and was absolutely taken with. I was also taken with the power of films to define things for me that I’d not been able to define for myself. So I became an actor.”

_____________________________________________________________________YYeah….you’re being a BIT extreme. There is such a thing as middle ground. It’s called not exposing the kids to the sidewalks of a MAJOR city where they will obviously get A LOT of extra attention. Try, I don’t know…leaving them with Grandma & Grandpa Pitt while your doing a media blitz that EVERYONE in the free world knows about. For whatever reason, there are a select group of celeb children that the paps/public that a more then “usual” interest in. These kids are part of that group. If Brad & Angie wanted to keep them happy and stress free (Like most parents want their kids to be) they would shield them from unnecessary situations that can cause them to feel these emotions. He can obviously see that this causes stress so he should probably do something about it…if he cares. And NO, I don’t really care overly much….just making good observations. They aren’t my kids and it’s not my job to care about them…it’s their parents job. So they should start doing it.

For those of you who figure they should find creative ways to dodge the paps–they are the most hunted subjects on earth right now. Yes, Angie went to the back door of the school with Mad–and wow, there were the paps–video tape too. Like the Princess of Wales, they can’t walk down a street or do normal family things without dozens of paps flashing them. Unlike Parasite Hilton and Britney the Unfitney they don’t notify the paps of their every move. A Chicago Trib reporter wrote an article on the paps that pursue them. She was in the car interviewing one of them when his walkie-talkie squawked with a potential Angie outing siting. She said it was terrifying–the pap was in radio/phone and walkie-talkie contact with others. He was going double the speed limit in downtown Chicago, running red lights and stop signs and changing lanes from far left to far right. The owner of the toy store that Angie took Z too even came out and yelled at them. Angie tried to leave the back way, but half the paps were there.
Both of them must be terrified at times for their kids.

Listen haters, all this family asks is to live their lives like anyone else. The paps should take their pics from a distance and not shout names. I’m sure you think it’s ok to cover children’s faces with masks like Michael Jackson, or lock them up in a dungeon, or you think that movie stars should never have kids? Or that they should leave them at home with nannies while they shoot movies in other countries? Then when they start doing drugs at 16 or get into trouble like the Hollywood starlets we have now, you start whining again. The JP kids have shown themselves to be very well behaved, and their parents clearly love them. LEAVE THEM ALONE, JEALOUS TROLLS, and go mind your own kids.

Angelina did not make him stop believing in God. He was already questioning certain things way before he met Angelina. From reading the article I don’t get the feeling that he stopped believing in anything. I think he has evolved and continues to do so. It is a spiritual journey for all of us. We continue to evolve, mature till we take our last breath in this life. One’s spiritual journey never ends..even in the next life one’s spirit continues to evolve till it gets nearer and nearer to God. All we take from this earth is the good deeds we have done. And he certainly is doing a lot of that here on God’s earth.
He is a good man. He is a sincere man. I would not worry about his soul if I were you.

It’s as simple as this….
If a person can’t control EVERYONE else (paps are a part of this grouping) then they should try to control THEMSELVES and the PEOPLE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR. That also includes controlling the situations they put themselves in and the places they go together. Did you get that? Do you understand? Stop repeating the party line and think for yourself.
Now why would the JPs live their lives to suit the trolls and the haters? They have a right to parade their kids whenever they want to and they have a right to say don’t take photographs too close to the face of my kids. They are tax paying American citizens who have every right to walk the streets, eat where they want, play where they want.

Anyone accusing them of alerting the paps to their presence or pimping out their kids is delusional. They’re two of the biggest stars in the world and are the most pursued by the paps - even more so than Tom and Katie or Posh and Becks. When these two got together, their star-power grew exponentially. I saw a show called “Chasing Angelina” and it was all about a paparazzi’s attempt to get a photo of her. They have networks of informants that work for the photo agencies that alert the photographers to the presence of a celeb.
They don’t need to generate publicity with photo-ops - if anything, they can’t get away from them.

So they shouldn’t take they kids to school? Or they shouldn’t take their kids out to play at a local playground where millions of others parents take their kids to do all across this country b/c it’s in a major city? How would you explain that to a six, four, two and a 16 month old? “oh you can’t go out in play today b/c we are in NYC or NOLA” could you imagine how upset those kids would be? I agree with your point regarding alerting the papz. They don’t have to. They should KNOW that the papz will be there because of the star power they have. They should also know when the paps will be out en force more than usual. That’s why they should leave their children in a place where they won’t have to encounter it. Of course they can’t (as some people have over-dramatically put it) lock them in dungeons. But there is no need for them to be EVERYWHERE their perents are if it’s going to potentially upset them. It’s not normal for a parent to knowingly put their child in a situation that will undoubtedly upset them especially when some of these more exaggerated encounters continue to occur i.e the ordeals they had with picking Maddox up at school.

Once again, you are taking things to the extreme. Do you enjoy drama or something? I know they are INCREDIBLY famous and they can’t help being followed. But they can do as much as possible to shield their children from it. By the way, the paps did seem more respectful during photo ops where Brad’s mother was involved. I don’t see that sending their children to visit their grandparents or having the grandparents come to babysit is “pawning them off” in any way. It would be much easier for them to find an alternate form of schooling/play if the situation, at that particular time, warranted it. It would be much easier to explain something like that to a child then explain why those “strange men were screaming in their ears” and shoving hard pointy black things with flashing lights into their faces. I don’t see this a “sheltering” them I see this as protecting them. There are all sorts of situations where they could interact safely with kids outside of their family unit. It just needs to be planned by someone who wants to take the time to do it.

It is hard to believe that she only just turned 32, she has achieved in those years what most people will never achieve if they lived to be 100years. There is no question that Angelina is a trailblazer, always a leader and never a follower. The media has created an image of an Angelina that bears no resemblance to who she is, the tabloids especially have turned her life into a soap opera and creating drama where none exists. The tabloids have been especially vicious in their relentless attack on this woman. I ask myself why? What is it about this woman that so threaten other women. As one columnist so succinctly put it, “Angelina does not make us feel good about ourself.” This is a woman who at the age of 26 adopted a child while most of her peers have been parroting to the media about wanting to be a mother, Jolie doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. Yes adoption has been going on long before she adopted, but she made it cool and acceptable. She has immersed herself in her humanitarian work, earning her kudos and respect from the experts in the field, she donates one third of her income to so many different charitable organizations around the world. Not only does she give money, she gives her time and her heart. She is a pilot, how many actresses can claim that?
Most insecure, self absorbed people cannot relate to her because she is not a train wreck. People can look at the train wrecks that are Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears and feel sorry for them and happily say to themselves,’Thank God my life is not that bad, thank God I am a better mother”, but that cannot be said about Jolie. She is a wonderful mother, a wonderful and loving partner, daughter and sister.
It is amusing how the media tries to force down our throat their version of Angelina- the man eater, this is interesting considering that her life has been so public and she has only been associated with so few men, two of whom she married. The media tries to portray an image of a cold and controlling woman, but yet again the facts do not bear that out. Everybody that has ever met her always say how sweet and down to earth she is, even Brad Pitt, poor man, did not know what hit him when he met her because the Angelina he met was the real Angelina and not the version created by the media. Her ex husbands still think the world of her and have the most positive things to say about her, unlike the eternal victim(Jennifer Anniston)who proclaimed that she and her ex husband were parting as friends until she realized that playing the victim and stabbing him on the back will be her best career move, and knowing that they are so many insecure women who do not have a discerning mind and cannot think for themselves.
Angelina is that rare actress that is taken serious both in Hollywood and Washington DC. The media try to create a caricature of her authentic self in an effort assure their readers that one person cannot have it all. At this point, she and Brad Pitt have baffled the tabloid and fiction writers who proclaimed that this union will not last more than six months, here they are going into their third year with four children and more being planned for. To read some of the blogs with the bitter women claiming they are over Brangelina, and yet everywhere they show up, the crowd swell, applauding them. Maybe the tabloids need to get with the program that more people want this couple to succeed. We are constantly told she was a wild child or all the crazy stuff she did seven to ten years ago with her ex husband, funny nobody says anything about BBT’s behavior from back then considering that he was old enough to be her father. Drew Barrymore was a wild child doing drugs and clubbing at the tender age of 10, and let us not forget about Johnny Depp trashing hotel rooms, but of course they are not Angelina Jolie and there is always one rule for her and a different one for everyone else.
Angelina is an enigmatic figure, very intelligent, very passionate and highly opinionated, I can’t say I blame Brad for falling in love with this gem of a woman. Her beauty shines from within. The tabloids have been throwing everything they can at her right now, hoping that they can break her, but my gut feeling is that seeing what she has seen in the refugee camps and the war torn countries she has visited, she has a better perspective in life, she is able to see the bigger picture and that is why her detractors will never get to her because she is on a much higher plane. I have a feeling that we will still be talking about this woman 50 years from now, long after the pity party has ended and the fake girl next door has been exposed for the fraud that she is. In the mean time, Angelina will continue to live her life with such poise, class and dignity. Staying cool and level headed in the midst of the madness, she is one cool, classy babe.

Angelina Jolie’s Hollywood exile
The most ferocious performer on film today is proof there are still big stars — it’s the pictures that got smaller.

One of my fondest memories of Pauline Kael was a weekend at her home in Great Barrington, Mass., just a few months before she died. Newsday critic Gene Seymour and I spent two nights catching her up on a fantastic new actress, Angelina Jolie, whom she had seen once in a Mike Newell comedy, “Pushing Tin” (1999), and been delighted with. Pauline didn’t care much for “Girl, Interrupted,” the film for which Jolie won the best supporting actress Oscar (neither did Seymour, who earned a hearty laugh by dubbing it “Snakepit 90210″), but she howled gleefully every time Jolie reduced one of the other actresses in the film to mere window dressing.
“Those poor actresses,” she said. “She’s absolutely fearless in front of a camera. This girl would scare the **** out of Jack Nicholson in ‘Cuckoo’s Nest.’” Kael’s favorite performance was Jolie as the doomed bisexual supermodel Gia in the HBO film. “My God,” she exclaimed, “this girl could play both the Brando and Maria Schneider roles in ‘Last Tango’! Where in the world did she come from?”
From where indeed? One of her earlier directors called her “an extraordinary-looking creature, like some weird, undiscovered orchid.” Never having attended college, Jolie is unencumbered by the jargon-riddled baggage that passes for modern education. The instinctual power of her work is refreshingly devoid of the anesthetizing layers that plague so much American acting. Her responses to everything are visceral and direct, a quality that has earned her a fandom that cuts across class, sex and even political lines. While other celebrities exhaust themselves trying to stay hip, Jolie, who offers no indication in her interviews that she has any knowledge or interest in popular culture, defines hip. Apparently oblivious to the mockery of a large portion of the mainstream press (such as the New York Times, which headlined a story “Can Angelina Jolie Save the World?”) and even the cheap collegiate cynicism of “Saturday Night Live,” Jolie, like the existential man whom French intellectuals used to worship, chooses her own loyalties and responsibilities without deference to conservative or liberal pieties.
She is often referred to in magazines as Hollywood royalty, but Angelina the actress isn’t really her father’s girl or anyone else’s. Like Athena, she seems to have sprung fully formed from the head of Zeus — except that her estranged father, Jon Voight, isn’t her Zeus; she inherited his talent but not his instincts. (Combine Voight with Jolie’s beautiful mother, the French Canadian Iroquois actress Marcheline Bertrand, and her uncle, Chip Taylor, the rock singer who wrote “Wild Thing,” and you might have something). Jolie is both her own Zeus and Athena, constantly re-creating herself. She may be the first great movie star ever to have no antecedents. Film critic Parker Tyler thought the pantheon of movie gods and goddesses in every era to be new versions of their predecessors; Marilyn Monroe was a reincarnation of Jean Harlow, Liz Taylor of Theda Bara, etc. But Jolie doesn’t evoke previous movie goddesses; there is a touch of her godmother, Jacqueline Bisset, who, like Angelina, was considered the most beautiful actress of her time but who was a dull screen presence compared to Jolie.
There is, perhaps, a hint of the spirit of another Hollywood brat, the young Jane Fonda, in her, though it’s difficult to picture Jolie ever settling into such a doctrinaire sociopolitical stance as Fonda’s in the late ’60s. Jolie is so independent she doesn’t even qualify as a feminist, unless the definition can be extended to a woman who loved so fiercely that she carried a vial of her husband’s blood around her neck. As for politics, Jolie’s activism hasn’t lent itself to easy answers and finger pointing but to front-line involvement (”My first job today,” she wrote in her journal about her U.N. missions, “Notes From My Travels,” “was measuring the medicine powder at the therapeutic feeding center. Under the age of five — extra nutrition. Pregnant — measured. I wanted to be careful not to measure a spoonful too short.”)

One of the best examples of the jujitsu Jolie can do on our attitudes toward movie sexuality was her performance in the elegant thriller “Original Sin,” released in 2001. Instantly dismissed by critics — the fate of almost any film done in an odd style by an unknown director — “Original Sin” deserves a second look, particularly for the performances of Jolie and the sweetly reticent Antonio Banderas. Directed by Michael Cristofer, the playwright (”Shadow Box”) who had previously directed Jolie in “Gia,” “Original Sin” is a wonderful piece of stylish trash (”I loved it,” Kael wrote on the envelope when she returned the copy I loaned her) made from the noir mystery “Waltz Into Darkness,” by the cult favorite Cornell Woolrich (best known as the author of the story that became Hitchcock’s “Rear Window”). “Waltz Into Darkness” had been filmed before, most notably by François Truffaut in 1969 under the title “Mississippi Mermaid,” starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve. Woolrich’s novel, set in late 19th century New Orleans, is about a widower who takes a chance on a mail-order bride who turns out to be an enigmatic adventuress — like all men in these kinds of stories, he is pulled into a web of deceit and murder.
Cristofer relocates the story to late 19th century Havana (actually shot in Mexico), probably to take advantage of the location and also to accommodate Banderas’ accent. Retooling the script around his female star, Cristofer retains its lurid pulp quality but turns the femme fatale theme on its head by letting Jolie’s character dominate the plot midway through the film. She stops being the victim or fantasy figure associated with the genre and becomes the protagonist. Jolie is terrific playing a character for which there is almost no movie precedent (the great Deneuve, in Truffaut’s version, played the role as the classic shallow man-trap). She is a woman who has suffered through every form of degradation, committed the grossest of crimes, and still believes in the possibilities of dignity and love. (In one remarkable scene, facing gang rape from vengeful gamblers whom she has cheated, she glares at her attackers as if to deny them, at least, the pleasure of seeing her suffer.)
“Original Sin” is often scary stuff, particularly in scenes that look as if they were intended to reflect the dark corners of Jolie’s psyche. For instance, a scene in which she bonds with a lover performing a ritual with knives, a practice Jolie had often discussed in interviews. And in a sly joke, concealed from all but those who happen to catch it in the credits, the character of Satan in a stage production who is also her lover is played by her brother, James Haven. It’s as if Jolie was giving the finger to a press that foamed at the mouth when she told the world how much she loved her brother after winning the Oscar.
If “Original Sin” had been a thriller in the traditional mode, it might have been a success, but critics and audiences alike were jolted by its weirder aspects and by the ways in which it subverted the noir themes — in other words, for probably the precise reasons that Jolie was drawn to the material in the first place.
It isn’t so much that most of her other movies have been bad as the way in which they are bad. The writing in American movies has never been more abysmal, the characters not really written but sketched into what is always an action or sex comedy framework. (Nearly all Hollywood films are action movies or sex comedies; “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” tries to up the ante by splicing the genres.) Real actors must essentially do the work that screenwriters used to do and create their own characters from whole cloth. (Mike Newell, who directed one of her best roles in “Pushing Tin,” conceded, “There really wasn’t much there on the page for her character. She filled in the blanks.”) Jolie has done this in a long series of films that are notable mostly for her performances, movies that you might not see at all if you didn’t stumble on them while perusing the vast left field of cable TV. The combination of the young Jolie and Joyce Carol Oates’ unsparing novel about a high school girl gang should have produced a film that made her the James Dean of the ’90s. If the rest of “Foxfire” (1996) has been as tough as her portrayal of “Legs” Sadovsky it would have, but the script’s touchy-feely mode was at odds with Oates’ and Jolie’s edges. Her best role and her best performance before “Gia” was in “George Wallace,” John Frankenheimer’s fine, too-little-seen television biography of the Alabama governor, in which Jolie played a status-hungry Southern girl forced into maturity when her husband is paralyzed by an assassin’s bullet.
It’s intriguing to think what directions Jolie’s career might have gone in had she hooked up with a strong director like Frankenheimer at an earlier age. Meanwhile, we’re left to wonder why Hollywood’s best directors don’t get off their asses and build projects around the movies’ most exciting actress. Can’t Martin Scorsese see that Jolie’s energy is precisely the cure for the slack in his recent work? (Jolie would have ignited the role of Jenny, the pickpocket, in “Gangs of New York,” but she would have looked as if she could have eaten Leonardo DiCaprio alive. Imagine if she had been paired off with Daniel Day-Lewis’ Bill the Butcher!) What’s wrong with Quentin Tarantino? Hum. Wonder why no declarations of adoration or appreciation for Jolie or mention of their relationship. It sounds like it’s more of a business partnership, really. You’d think after all this time, especially in Parade, which is respectable and circulated EVERYWHERE for free and in the Sunday paper, that he would kind of acknowledge that he loves her, etc. I mean, she’s barely mentioned and if she is, it’s all about kids, kids, kids.
That would certainly have shut up any rumors of them not getting along. I still don’t understand why they don’t just get married. Is it that bad of an institution? I don’t think so.

Well, he certainly missed a good opportunity to give a shout out to his girlfriend for the folks in the US to see - Parade would have been a great venue for that. Instead, the article is somewhat depressing and the fact that he calls the notion that Jolie had a hand in making him the better and more humanitarian/giving/thoughtful person he is today than he was 2 years ago “Idiotic” is kind of a let down. Hasn’t he said before that she made him a better man? Why is it suddenly an idiotic notion?

Thank you JJ for giving away the interview for Sunday’s Parade. He is so mature now and is truly an icon in the film industry.

I noticed that behavior from the producers too at the MMS premier. Anyway, I read somewhere that when Brad was filming Babel in Morocco, about May 2005 (fresh from the separation news) Angie visited him at his suite and spent the night there. It was written in a magazine that Brad stayed only until 10 pm at the Babel party, politely excused himself and went back to his suite to be with Angie. Angie left early the next morning via private jet to her home in Fulmer, England. Also in May 2005, Angie went to dinner with her ex Johnny LM at a restaurant in London. Then you know the rest, June the premier of MMS in the States, and Mexico. In between, Brad surprised Angie with a birthday party, went to England midJune until July to attend the Live 8 concert, then to Africa for Z and went back home with some type of meningitis. Angie flew back to NYC, took Z to hospital, flew July 15 to be with Brad in Malibu while he recuperates. She waited until Z is in stable condition.

Jen will not marry any time soon because she loves the way her life is right now. And it seems like she loves attention and the only way for her to get it is by public admiration of her situation - left for another woman.

You can blame it on Brad, but the hat is back.
Blame it on Brad Pitt sporting slouchy tuques in sweltering Africa, Britney Spears pairing a white fedora with cut-offs or Samuel L. Jackson’s backwards Kangols — hats are back and anything goes.
You can feel the buzz in Roberta Glennon’s store, Roberta’s Hats, on Government Street. Tourists loaded with shopping bags stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the local coffee-break crowd, trying on the latest caps and tuques on one of the first brisk days of fall.
“I might have to change the name to ‘Roberta’s Caps,’ ” says Glennon, who opened the store 15 years ago. “They are getting so popular.”
Hats of all types were a noticeable focus on the runways of Paris and New York this year, with Marc Jacob’s Gatsby-esque collection and Proenza Schouler accessorizing the entire fall collection with a similar heavy, black cloche (or bell hat).
Glennon says it’s a high time for headwear, and celebrities are setting the trends.
“Those slouchy Brad Pitts fly outta here a dozen a day,” she says, wearing a feathered top hat by Vancouver milliner Renata Crowe. When Naomi Watts appeared in the 2005 remake of King Kong wearing a 1920s cloche, women started requesting the vintage style en masse.
“Right now fedoras, Fidel-style hats and pork-pies are very in — especially in tweeds and plaids,” says Glennon. “The interesting thing is people are wearing them with anything, from street clothes to something more dressy.”
Sissy Spacek came into the store every day for a week while filming Pictures of Hollis Woods in town this summer.
“She bought a lot of fedoras,” says Glennon. “All fedoras, she loved them.”
Spacek isn’t the only celebrity who has come hunting . Roberta’s has had Nelly Furtado, Bif Naked, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar as customers.
Kurt Browning brought his whole family in to shop for hats. British actor Bill Nighy (famous for his role as Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean) bought a fedora, and when asked to pose for a picture, insisted it be beside a portrait of the Queen that hangs on the wall.
One time, Billy Joel brought his entourage in to treat them to hats. He ended up turning the stage at the back of the store into a dance floor.
“Colin James was playing on the stereo and Billy Joel says, ‘Who is this, I love this?’ ” says Glennon. “Then he just started dancing around.”
While Glennon and her staff agree the only heinous hat trend is the backwards ball cap, they are often surprised with what becomes a hit. Like the novelty animal tuques and knitwear by the Toronto company DeLux.
“Ones with kitty ears and devil horns did really well. Even the sock monkey and chicken hats were big sellers,” she says.
The bulk of people who come into Roberta’s browse and try on dozens of hats looking for something they like. Hat prices range from $20 to $400 for some of the fancier handmade pieces. The average price is in the $30 to $50 range.
Even though I collected vintage hats throughout my teens, I tell Glennon I’ve always had a hard time wearing hats — particularly because I’m short, and if they have a brim, I can’t see anyone taller than five-feet-six.
She says the hat weary should keep trying, particularly different styles and sizes. A simple beret is a good place to start.
“You have to try things on to know what suits you. People will try on 30 to 40 hats,” she says. “The funny thing is they often go back to the first few — I think we instinctively know what suits our face.”

This has been an amazing fortnight for followers of Brad and Ange. Two simple September weeks have given an extra polish to a screen-biz legend already buffed to a dazzle. Brad is the one who came up via commercials, minor TV shows and a bit part in Thelma and Louise to become the cinema’s most beautiful leading male. Angelina is the one who emerged from a stormy parental chrysalis (and still won’t pick up the phone to father Jon Voight), followed by humungous fanzine exposure, to become the screen’s most beautiful - or sexiest at any rate - female.
Now, in a synchronised coup, they have both been anointed as serious actors.
Last week Brad was named Best Male Performer at the Venice Film Festival, to gasps of respectful surprise. We who had seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford admired Pitt’s work as the first-named outlaw but thought the prize likelier to go to the second outlaw, showily played by Casey Affleck. (His brother Ben won Venice Best Actor last year.) Either that or the gong would be bestowed, as so often, on a non-Hollywood actor no one outside Europe had heard of.
Then yesterday, in the UK and other parts of the planet, Angelina opened in A Mighty Heart, playing the seriously serious role of Marianne Pearl. Pearl was the wife, then widow, of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel, famously slain in a jihadi execution. Jolie received praise at Cannes in Michael Winterbottom’s film for dowdying down and accenting up to impersonate an everyday-attractive French brunette with a high anguish quotient. The actress’s strong performance culminates in an ear-piercing primal scream on receiving confirmation of her husband’s murder. (I thought the scream the single false note, the one that said, “This is my Oscar bid”.)
For Mr and Mrs Pitt the moment is almost Miltonic. They are no longer babes in the Edenic backyard; they have joined the acting grown-ups. This is both good news and bad. There is something lapsarian - something a little cast-out-of-paradise - about beautiful people who risk martyring their beauty with talent. Not content with the elite status granted them by a deity who has placed them in the Garden of the Eternal Photo Opportunity, they risk all on raiding the Tree of the Knowledge of Passion, Emotion and Character Exploration.
(If you think invoking the Book of Genesis is overdoing it a bit, I would argue that Brad and Ange have already been acting out this scenario, wittingly or unwittingly. Both actors have spent an unseemly amount of recent screen time toying with snakes: Jolie in Alexander, as witchy-sexy Olympias, the hero’s mother;and Pitt, for no detectable plot reason but eye-catchingly and biblically, in Jesse James. He is even seen in one sequence wreathing his arms in a whole variety of serpents.)
The world feels ambivalent - both intrigued and apprehensive, or even a bit resentful - when beauty is joined on a single person’s mantelpiece by other trophies of accomplishment. “It isn’t fair” is part of our feeling. No one should be so blessed. In cinema the love-hate attitude to the beauty-talent linkup has been particularly keen. The paradigm is surely Marilyn Monroe. A tendency to reduce men to vaporous emanations of concupiscence, by a presence suggesting a pre-cognitive pulchritude, an unthinking animal perfection, cannot and must not, we feel, be sullied by conscious artistry. The need continues today, among many, to believe that Monroe had no intelligence, no discipline, no technique, no application. She just “was”.
In the same way, on screen, Gary Cooper, a male beauty, just “was”. So was Valentino. So, in her most iconic scenes, was Garbo (that impassive face blown by the sea breezes at the end of Queen Christina). And Marlene Dietrich so determinedly and near-totemically “was” - presenting to the glow of the production lights her impassive beauty with its sculpted cheekbones and elevated eyebrows - that she, for me, rather gave the game away. I always pictured Dietrich, at the end of a take, tearing off her air of elevated inanition and rowdying with the boys and girls behind the camera. (Pretty much true to reported fact.)
For the actuality is this. Beauty is not enough for stardom. It never has been. There has always been talent too, whether that extra gift is acting ability, charisma - and knowing how to use it - or an engaging richness of mannerism: all those things that are most simply summed up in the words, “the camera loves him/her”.
Pedants will have positioned themselves by now to point out that Pitt and Jolie have won acting acclaim before. Yes, I know. Each has been noticed by the Oscar voters. Brad won a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Twelve Monkeys, Jolie a Best Supporting Actress award for Girl, Interrupted. But I don’t count Oscars. Those handouts - especially for supporting roles - are given by the mad to the glad. Their yardsticks measure the yardage of shtick; their criterion is a showy quirkiness. Winning a performance prize at Venice and being good in the lead of a Michael Winterbottom movie are, in each case, a quite different thing.
So let’s salute Mr and Mrs Pitt. They have raised their game. At the same time let’s state once more: it is naive to be surprised. If an actor has reached the point of being a star, that actor has already made it clear that he or she is more, much more, than just a pretty face.

The point that I think you were “trying” to make is that we don’t know what it’s like to be them. I never claimed that I did. I spoke of them as being parents. Don’t parents USUALLY try to do everything they can to keep their kids happy, secure and sheltered from unnecessarily upsetting experiences? The answer is YES. This is one of best posts I have read with in a long time, I agree with you. While we don’t know “Jen” personally. If she truly changed as a human being we would see a glimpse of it. It seems Brad showed growth as a human being , while Aniston is still stuck in the same place. She obviously loved/loves the life she is leading. But I can now understand what Brad means , when he says he couldn’t sit on the couch anymore. Her fans are so busy hating , that they can’t or refuse to see that Jen has basically lied in a bunch of interviews regarding all these big changes she was going to make. She is still tanning , working, and hanging out with her family (oops my bad friends/coworkers. There is nothing wrong with that, but why should she and her fans be pissed because Brad did not want to live such a life anymore. If she truly knew what the word “compromise”was and support peharps she and brad would still be together If she at least made a effort to get off the couch and go places and discover new things with her husband, maybe they would still be together. The Vanity Fair article was a production worthy of a award. Brad check out of the marriage…Jennifer wanting kids more than Brad, when you look at Brad and Jens actions since that article, by Brad living his life he has made her and friends look like the liars they are. He is today is able to say she is a friend, that shows class, but ya know after reading the parade interview, it shows his christian values and roots, he may have strayed from them, but they are still there. forgiveness and turning the other cheek. That Parade article is wonderful because it shows that Brad is a decent and good person, and more and more of Anistons true colors are coming out. The tabloids will never researdh the Brad and Jen story in the right way, or show the other side to this “wronged woman story” because as the forbes article says jen moves magazines because she is seen as this. The tabloids are making money , so they will never come out and say Brad “was the wronged man” that does not sell. It is shame actually , but in the end whose career is suffering because of this “charade” the tabloids and Aniston herself created. It certainly not Brad, not only is making movies (something Aniston clearly wants) he seems to be fulfilled because that is not his world. So if that world (movies) end he still has his family. What does jen have when all this fame and pity, and career ends? That is what fans should be concern about .

Working with Angie, I was just talking to somebody about this upstairs, I also experienced working with Brad too, like just this unbelievable extra thing that they bring with them which I wouldn’t wish upon anybody which is camped outside the hotel right now, are 25 to 50 photographers just waiting because she’s in this building. And that would happen, we were shooting at the armory over in Brooklyn. I’d know when she was working because I’d come to work and there would be all these people there

You can blame it on Brad, but the hat is back.
Blame it on Brad Pitt sporting slouchy tuques in sweltering Africa, Britney Spears pairing a white fedora with cut-offs or Samuel L. Jackson’s backwards Kangols — hats are back and anything goes.
You can feel the buzz in Roberta Glennon’s store, Roberta’s Hats, on Government Street. Tourists loaded with shopping bags stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the local coffee-break crowd, trying on the latest caps and tuques on one of the first brisk days of fall.
“I might have to change the name to ‘Roberta’s Caps,’ ” says Glennon, who opened the store 15 years ago. “They are getting so popular.”
Hats of all types were a noticeable focus on the runways of Paris and New York this year, with Marc Jacob’s Gatsby-esque collection and Proenza Schouler accessorizing the entire fall collection with a similar heavy, black cloche (or bell hat).
Glennon says it’s a high time for headwear, and celebrities are setting the trends.
“Those slouchy Brad Pitts fly outta here a dozen a day,” she says, wearing a feathered top hat by Vancouver milliner Renata Crowe. When Naomi Watts appeared in the 2005 remake of King Kong wearing a 1920s cloche, women started requesting the vintage style en masse.
“Right now fedoras, Fidel-style hats and pork-pies are very in — especially in tweeds and plaids,” says Glennon. “The interesting thing is people are wearing them with anything, from street clothes to something more dressy.”
Sissy Spacek came into the store every day for a week while filming Pictures of Hollis Woods in town this summer.
“She bought a lot of fedoras,” says Glennon. “All fedoras, she loved them.”
Spacek isn’t the only celebrity who has come hunting . Roberta’s has had Nelly Furtado, Bif Naked, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar as customers.
Kurt Browning brought his whole family in to shop for hats. British actor Bill Nighy (famous for his role as Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean) bought a fedora, and when asked to pose for a picture, insisted it be beside a portrait of the Queen that hangs on the wall.
One time, Billy Joel brought his entourage in to treat them to hats. He ended up turning the stage at the back of the store into a dance floor.
“Colin James was playing on the stereo and Billy Joel says, ‘Who is this, I love this?’ ” says Glennon. “Then he just started dancing around.”
While Glennon and her staff agree the only heinous hat trend is the backwards ball cap, they are often surprised with what becomes a hit. Like the novelty animal tuques and knitwear by the Toronto company DeLux.
“Ones with kitty ears and devil horns did really well. Even the sock monkey and chicken hats were big sellers,” she says.
The bulk of people who come into Roberta’s browse and try on dozens of hats looking for something they like. Hat prices range from $20 to $400 for some of the fancier handmade pieces. The average price is in the $30 to $50 range.
Even though I collected vintage hats throughout my teens, I tell Glennon I’ve always had a hard time wearing hats — particularly because I’m short, and if they have a brim, I can’t see anyone taller than five-feet-six.
She says the hat weary should keep trying, particularly different styles and sizes. A simple beret is a good place to start.
“You have to try things on to know what suits you. People will try on 30 to 40 hats,” she says. “The funny thing is they often go back to the first few — I think we instinctively know what suits our face.”

#245: come to think of it, the X is a lot like Ritzy…they both love to sit around the house all day doing nothing except probably toke and gossip on the phone. One does it for real while one does it only in her imagination by the by (cause the latter has no friends to call actually) but they share that kind of lifestyle nevertheless.
Their world revolves around them and inside the walls of their abode cause that’s where they feel most secure and comfortable. The X is lazy…wanting things to be handed to her on a silver platter and she only moves when she has to like a slug.
Angie is a doer, never wanting the indolent lifestyle, is adventurous and always curious to see what is out there in the world. Walls don’t confine her and she has the boldness to even fly a plane to widen her perception of what is around her.
If they ever do Amelia Earhart (sp?), they should think of casting her. She reminds me so much of a younger Kathryn Hepburn for some reason also. That’s another lady who could play fierce in reel or real life.

Being parents who are there, who will be there for their upbringing and bodyguards always seem to be needed when we are going, announce for some kind of film. There is going to be a lot of hoopla around it. Most of the time we do not have to live with that and we want to ensure that our kids have normal upbringing as far as possible
