I agree with you PT. What the observer sees is not necessarily the intent of the photograph. Just because an artist draws a picture of a gun on canvas, does that mean he/she is pro gun? One sees what one wants to see in any image. The bottom line is this image spurred “tired of hypocrisy” to conjure up their own interpretation of what he/she personalized conveniently as criticism of BP which in turn is a probable self hypocrisy which you pointed out…glad you noted that.

For your claim to be remotely credible, you have to explain over what warring factions are in war in Africa. In majority the cases it is for control over natural resources, see Angola. Therefore claiming that environment and natural resources have nothing to do with conflict is “hypocrisy #1″.

Then you have to explain why a movement towards sustainable environment is not worthy of people of Africa, and why they should not mind bearing the brunt of global warming, such as floods, lack of adequate water. Suggesting that environment is not crucial, especially for long-term growth prospects of Africa, is “hypocrisy #2″.

Oh now, let’s cut Lamey some slack. She WAS the first person to say last year that the J-Ps had bought a house in NO. And she WAS the first person to say they were going to Latin America on their X-mas vacay and doing some charity work, too. And she WAS the first person who said Angie & Brad were going to Africa to have their baby. All of these things she said well in advance of the J-Ps making it public or the tabs printing it.

HOWEVER, for the most part, though, Lamey is full of sh#t. All she does is read other people’s blogs and comments on the stories. Hell, WE do that ourselves and can be far more caustic and CONSISTENT in our dislike of certain celebs. There is NO throwing of bones to X from any of us. Lately Lamey has been acting like X’s personal cheerleader, even is she does TRY to make her posts sound sarcastic. Almost every story written about Brad Pitt and his new movie, “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” has drawn parallels between the actor and the outlaw. Both idealized, hunted men, known the world over and not really known at all.

But there are shades of Pitt in the assassin as well as the outlaw. Pitt has said in the past that he sought fame, in part, because he expected it to salve some internal longing.

He speaks the same way now of “the coward,” Robert Ford, a man who views “celebrity as an attainment of some kind of self-worth.”

Of course, it doesn’t work out that way — for Pitt or Ford.

Pitt never could have wished for the kind of crazed celebrity he grapples with today, one that puts thousand-dollar bounties on pictures of his children and that gives him a sentry-like awareness of lurking paparazzi.

What is perhaps most surprising is how accepting Pitt seems of the insanity of his celebrity. “You know, when I first started, it was such a cacophony of grabbing and want. And I found it very discombobulating. And that was on a much smaller scale,” Pitt says on the phone from New York during a lunch break on the set of the new Coen brothers movie, “Burn After Reading.” “But now — and I’m sure it has something to do with having kids — none of it concerns me or fazes me.

“Now it’s like, ‘What’s the worst thing?’ The worst thing is that they get in the kids’ faces and they jump that line,” says Pitt, who, with partner Angelina Jolie, is a parent to four young children. “So, if it’s not that, then it’s just ‘Okay,’ and I can go on about my business.”

And he does understand the comparisons between himself and Jesse James, or what Pitt calls the “easy angle.” They grew up in roughly the same area of Missouri. They came from relatively unremarkable backgrounds and grew up to strike the strange nerve of public fascination.

“I was a bit dumbfounded to see that tabloid journalism was alive and well at that time,” Pitt says.

He also says he never really considered those similarities while making the movie. The 43-year-old was drawn by the chance to tell the oft-told story of the infamous robber in a different way. The movie is more Greek tragedy than classic western, Pitt says.

“I mean, I shoot my gun what — once? Twice?”

The tale picks up as James is winding down a life of crime. Much of the bandit’s gang has been snuffed out, and paranoia is increasingly taking hold when two brothers, including Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), worm into his small circle of loyalists.

Or seeming loyalists: As the title suggests, Robert Ford, simultaneously a sycophant and traitor, killed James with a gun his outlaw hero had just given him. Some historians suggest James had gotten careless; others say he knew what was coming and orchestrated his own death.

The actor has his own theory: James “was looking to see if there was anyone he could trust and if that would not be the case . . . then nothing was gonna change. And he couldn’t live that way,” he says.

Trust and deceit will also be central to “State of Play,” a remake of a BBC drama that will bring Pitt, who plays an investigative reporter, to Washington for five weeks early next year.

Turns out Pitt is a bit of a journalism junkie who has given quite a bit of thought to the state of the industry — no doubt because of his time spent under its microscope.

“I believe in it so much . . . as we see more and more the complexities of situations, that it’s not just ‘Star Wars’ — good against bad. I see the importance of it more than ever,” he says. His fear is that, especially on the Web, news organizations are placing more emphasis on stories of popular interest than on global importance.

“You’re going to have people and their whims dictating what the lead stories are going to be,” Pitt adds. “Or what the stories are going to be at all.”

As far as walking and talking, I think that the largest issue with the majority of the posts about these two, is all the judement passing and name calling on both ends and the inane banter about a situation that has long passed (ie…past relationships).

There are millions, billions of individuals out there helping others and making this world a better place, whether it is as simple as filling the pothole in the street, or helping our children cross the street, or saving lives in darfur… no one is on a pedestal, BP and AJ are beyond privileged to do what they do, to have the opportunities they have afforded to them, to have any door they want open to them simply because they are celebrity? We applaud them because the environment from which they were created is self indulged and self-absorbed and perhaps they are a little less so. I am not friend nor foe, just a realist… and at times there appears to be some of that lacking on these threads…
So as much as i wonder, what is the big deal with celebrity and why do i care, (and please, humans, refrain from attacks, i ramble aloud) I vote my utmost respect and admiration for those that fight the fight, walk the walk, talk the talk everyday of their lives, without privilege, without public awareness and recognition, every second of their existence… and still have the ability to keep rational thought, kind words and a smile in arms reach

This has been an amazing fortnight for followers of Brad and Ange. Two simple September weeks have given an extra polish to a screen-biz legend already buffed to a dazzle. Brad is the one who came up via commercials, minor TV shows and a bit part in Thelma and Louise to become the cinema’s most beautiful leading male. Angelina is the one who emerged from a stormy parental chrysalis (and still won’t pick up the phone to father Jon Voight), followed by humungous fanzine exposure, to become the screen’s most beautiful - or sexiest at any rate - female.

Now, in a synchronised coup, they have both been anointed as serious actors.

Last week Brad was named Best Male Performer at the Venice Film Festival, to gasps of respectful surprise. We who had seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford admired Pitt’s work as the first-named outlaw but thought the prize likelier to go to the second outlaw, showily played by Casey Affleck. (His brother Ben won Venice Best Actor last year.) Either that or the gong would be bestowed, as so often, on a non-Hollywood actor no one outside Europe had heard of.

Then yesterday, in the UK and other parts of the planet, Angelina opened in A Mighty Heart, playing the seriously serious role of Marianne Pearl. Pearl was the wife, then widow, of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel, famously slain in a jihadi execution. Jolie received praise at Cannes in Michael Winterbottom’s film for dowdying down and accenting up to impersonate an everyday-attractive French brunette with a high anguish quotient. The actress’s strong performance culminates in an ear-piercing primal scream on receiving confirmation of her husband’s murder. (I thought the scream the single false note, the one that said, “This is my Oscar bid”.)

For Mr and Mrs Pitt the moment is almost Miltonic. They are no longer babes in the Edenic backyard; they have joined the acting grown-ups. This is both good news and bad. There is something lapsarian - something a little cast-out-of-paradise - about beautiful people who risk martyring their beauty with talent. Not content with the elite status granted them by a deity who has placed them in the Garden of the Eternal Photo Opportunity, they risk all on raiding the Tree of the Knowledge of Passion, Emotion and Character Exploration.

(If you think invoking the Book of Genesis is overdoing it a bit, I would argue that Brad and Ange have already been acting out this scenario, wittingly or unwittingly. Both actors have spent an unseemly amount of recent screen time toying with snakes: Jolie in Alexander, as witchy-sexy Olympias, the hero’s mother;and Pitt, for no detectable plot reason but eye-catchingly and biblically, in Jesse James. He is even seen in one sequence wreathing his arms in a whole variety of serpents.)

The world feels ambivalent - both intrigued and apprehensive, or even a bit resentful - when beauty is joined on a single person’s mantelpiece by other trophies of accomplishment. “It isn’t fair” is part of our feeling. No one should be so blessed. In cinema the love-hate attitude to the beauty-talent linkup has been particularly keen. The paradigm is surely Marilyn Monroe. A tendency to reduce men to vaporous emanations of concupiscence, by a presence suggesting a pre-cognitive pulchritude, an unthinking animal perfection, cannot and must not, we feel, be sullied by conscious artistry. The need continues today, among many, to believe that Monroe had no intelligence, no discipline, no technique, no application. She just “was”.

In the same way, on screen, Gary Cooper, a male beauty, just “was”. So was Valentino. So, in her most iconic scenes, was Garbo (that impassive face blown by the sea breezes at the end of Queen Christina). And Marlene Dietrich so determinedly and near-totemically “was” - presenting to the glow of the production lights her impassive beauty with its sculpted cheekbones and elevated eyebrows - that she, for me, rather gave the game away. I always pictured Dietrich, at the end of a take, tearing off her air of elevated inanition and rowdying with the boys and girls behind the camera. (Pretty much true to reported fact.)

For the actuality is this. Beauty is not enough for stardom. It never has been. There has always been talent too, whether that extra gift is acting ability, charisma - and knowing how to use it - or an engaging richness of mannerism: all those things that are most simply summed up in the words, “the camera loves him/her”.

Pedants will have positioned themselves by now to point out that Pitt and Jolie have won acting acclaim before. Yes, I know. Each has been noticed by the Oscar voters. Brad won a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Twelve Monkeys, Jolie a Best Supporting Actress award for Girl, Interrupted. But I don’t count Oscars. Those handouts - especially for supporting roles - are given by the mad to the glad. Their yardsticks measure the yardage of shtick; their criterion is a showy quirkiness. Winning a performance prize at Venice and being good in the lead of a Michael Winterbottom movie are, in each case, a quite different thing.

you are absolutely correct and that was my point in my post #95 quoting myself “What the observer sees is not necessarily the intent of the photograph. I honestly don’t believe most of the regular posters on this thread place them on a pedestal, some do, but most do not. 2. and yes there are other celebrities who are committed but some celebrities are not of such high profile to influence the general public as much as this couple. AJ-BP have stated they are aware of their privileged situation and are committed to use their notoriety to educate and heighten awareness to issues they feel important…is that so wrong?

I don’t get the gist of your post; what does him pledging to be a good man have to do with anything? Nevermind.

It goes back to when journalists ‘predict’ backlash where these two are concerned, usually after they are denied access or they crash and burn when they had the opportunity to interview them (i.e. Peecrust). Zwecker has a rep from being nasty toward these two; one of the regulars here was even so concerned about this dude that she emailed him; his reply to her was questionable, if not vindictive. Zwecker didn’t have access to these two in August, so he wrote these snarky pieces about them and the ensuing pap presence. Fast forward to now; he gets access; he’s cordial, even respectful toward them.

It doesn’t matter what Brad or Angelina look like. They are not superficial people like all these haters. Looks are the last thing that brought them together but both being so stunning probably helped. They have chemistry, a sense of family, common career and life goals…….

Ahhhhhh, but you see in their shallow little minds they don’t see anything else but looks. This question should be asked to the people who lived through all this devastation. Like Meli who lives in Pyrgos. As always our government will give promises here and there and nothing will be done at the end. They will increase the prices of every product and all this money will go to their pockets.
